Those looking for a secluded unique honeymoon destination that offers a seamless blend of relaxation and adventure need look no further than Jamaica’s South Coast. Stretching from Treasure Beach in the west to the tip of Long Bay in the east, the area is comprised of St. Elizabeth, Manchester, and Clarendon. The South Coast – named “Jamaica’s Best Kept Secret” by Visit Jamaica – called perhaps the country’s quietest resort area thanks to its rural setting and natural beauty, brings together all of the elements that make Jamaica distinct – tropical beaches, exciting activities, and lush greenery – but with a laid-back approach that makes it a hidden gem.

Despite seeming undisturbed, the South Coast has plenty of things to do to keep you occupied during your stay. At Lover’s Leap, you’ll gaze out at the turquoise waters of Cutlass Bay from a stunning vantage point atop a 1,700-foot cliff on the edge of Santa Cruz Mountains. After hearing the fascinating, romantic tale of Jamaica’s own Romeo and Juliet, you’ll want to take the short drive west to Treasure Beach, which is a wonderfully authentic Jamaican beach that will introduce you to the heart of local culture. Not too far north of Treasure Beach is where you’ll find YS Falls; a natural wonder where gorgeous waterfalls are nestled between charming gardens. Or explore the country’s famous Black River on J. Charles Swaby’s Black River Safari, which will take you on a 45-minute trip up the river as you learn about the diverse wildlife that call the river home.

The attractions and natural beauty of the South Coast are enough to warrant a visit on their own, but the delectable cuisine takes things to an entirely new level. From the elaborate breakfasts at Smurfs Cafe in Treasure Beach to the freshest fish you’ll ever eat at Little Ochie Seafood in Alligator Pond, Jamaica’s unbelievable dishes will send your taste buds on a journey you’ll never forget.

Whether you choose to stay at the all-inclusive Sandals South Coast or one of the region’s innumerable villas and guesthouses, one visit to Jamaica’s South Coast is enough to hold a special place in your heart for years to come.

Travel Tips

  • GETTING THERE: Jamaica has three international airports – Norman Manley International Airport, Sangster International Airport, and Ian Fleming International Airport – and honeymooners looking to vacation on the South Coast typically fly into Sangster International Airport in the north. As the drive from the airport to the South Coast can take anywhere from about an hour-and-a-half to get to the upper reaches of the South Coast, to about two-and-a-half hours to arrive at Treasure Beach on the water, renting a car at the airport is recommended.
  • GETTING AROUND: The South Coast is the most rural of Jamaica’s honeymoon destinations, so visitors will want to consider renting a car as opposed to relying on taxis and public transportation. A car rental can be easily arranged at the airport when you fly into the country.
  • WHEN TO GO: The winter months are peak travel season in Jamaica due to the mild nature of the weather, though temperatures throughout the country remain remarkably steady throughout the year. Some of the best travel deals can be found during the summer months, but be sure to keep hurricane season (June through November with a peak in August and September) in mind when making plans. Regardless of the season you choose to travel, you’ll be able to enjoy the region’s picturesque beaches, magnificent waterfalls, and boundless outdoor activities.
  • WEATHER: As Jamaica is located within the tropics, the seasonal weather changes are rather mild. Daily temperatures average in the 80s throughout the year, with nighttime rarely bringing temperatures below the mid-60s. The country’s dry season begins in December and continues through May, and the summer and autumn months correlate with larger rainfalls and the Atlantic Ocean’s hurricane season.
