Reviews of Hotel Riu Palace Macao
Here right now and we are loving it! One of the cleanest resorts we’ve been to. Cleaning staff are amazing, as are wait staff and bartenders. The beach is beautiful. All the food we had was very good. Only complaint is that people are allowed to smoke in the pool.

Bad points- bedrooms smelt and felt damp. Put a dehumidifier bag in wardrobe and was half full of water by the time we left. Paperwork felt damp. Americans took over swim
Up pool. They were loud and drunk most of the day which continued into the evening. We witnessed two groups of them being kicked out of one bar for being drunk and disorderly and the same in the Asian restaurant. No respect for other people whatsoever. Music was loud. Everywhere. The only quiet place was the beach. No shade provided on beach only relying on palm
Trees.
Good points. Food was delicious. Staff were lovely albeit some of them
Struggled with language barrier. They were all polite

Adult only all-inclusive. We stayed for five nights and enjoyed our stay. The hotel is compact enough to be able to reach everything in a few minutes walk. Beach is busy but fantastic. We didn't have any problem finding chairs but did go in the afternoon. Bars are conveniently located everywhere and the bar staff were great and very accommodating. The regular buffet was decent with good variety but very heavy on the fish. We ate at the restaurants every night. Three nights we went early and did not have to wait for a table. One night we went around 7:45 and had to wait about 30 minutes for the Italian restaurant. One night on way back from the spa we picked up a buzzer from the Asian restaurant and went back to the room to shower. The Italian restaurant was the worst for entrees, but the appetizer buffet was very good. You can check out all the menus for restaurants and bars on the RIU app. We did not upgrade to Elite and had a room to the rear of the main building looking out over to the RIU Palace Bavaro. The room was spacious and the bed comfortable. There was some mustiness from the humidity, but the air conditioning helped with that although we had to turn it off since it basically had two settings, off and ice-box. We ordered extra blankets, mini-bar non-alcoholic beer (you have to ask specifically for that), and housekeeping through the app. We didn't have any problem with noise in our room. It is about a two minute walk to the casino, spa, and disco (drinks included at disco but not at spa and casino, unless playing). About 5-10 minute walk to water park and RIU party complex. Neither the disco or the party complex have the higher end liquors. There was entertainment every night. Staying at Macao allows you to go to all the other RIUs in area (except Republica) so we would look at the entertainment calendar and go to the most interesting sounding entertainments - the best one was the Vegas show. Because Macao was sold out and we were staying longer, we moved over to the Palace Bavaro next door. If you are trying to decide between the two, besides cost and children, some of the differences would be that the room we had in Bavaro was a lot nicer but VERY noisy, there were many more food options at Bavaro and the steakhouse was much better (better cuts of meat) but you definitely had to be at the restaurants right at 6 pm, the sports bar was much nicer at Macao, however, across everything, the service at Macao was significantly better. I think people tip more at Macao and it is smaller so the staff recognize you and get to know your preferences. I never felt forgotten about at Macao. Bavaro is also a lot more spread out - I checked my pedometer and I was walking 7K-9K steps a day at Macao and between 10K-12K at Bavaro. If you book direct, it comes with free airport transfer which was very easy and convenient. In terms of who else was there it was mostly couples on honeymoons, groups on birthday/special event trips, and retired or close to retired friend groups. There were a number of families with adult children. There were a couple of solo travelers but not many. Most people were over the age of 30 and it skewed towards the older crowd.

You just can’t beat a Riu hotel, I love the alcoholic optics in the room with a fridge full of soft drinks and water - you could not fault the all inclusive package the speciality restaurants included as many times as you want, plenty of bars, the buffet was enormous with a vast amount of choice.
Everyday the staff had a smile and service was impeccable.
The hotel was at 96% capacity, but we never had any problems getting sunbeds by the pool or beach even though some were reserved at stupid o’clock 😂
Visited the shop which was quite large and sold everything you need, Casino was busy as it’s open for outsiders.

We were welcomed with a punch while checking in. We were in room 4008. It was clean but a bit damp and a few times smelled like sewer. I brought Damp rid bags (Lavender scent) and hung one in the closet and one in the bathroom. They seemed to help, and by the end of our weeks stay, we were about half full. Our chamber maid was creative and left us flowers in different places and folded towels for us. She was in our room about twice a day, once to clean and once or twice for turndown/touchup service. Through the app, I requested an iron, and it arrived pretty quickly. The grounds are well kept. I did not experience any issue with mosquitos or any other bugs, but our friends said they did have some issue with bugs in their shower one morning. We were there from Feb 21st and departed March 1st. Our favorite dinner restaurant was a tie between Kabuchi's and the Pancho's steakhouse. The food was okay at all places but the service was the best at those 2 places in our experience. There is a walking path to a shopping area about a 5 minute walk (go out to the beach walk and go left). There are a variety of good for sale and a pharmacy. There are vendors that do approach you while on the beach with their products, and we had great service for drinks the day we had a beach day. There are plenty of lounge chairs and umbrellas. We did a free scuba lesson in the pool to see if we would like it enough to do a tour, and we had some that did not care for it, so we did not book it. My husband tried to windsurf, but the staff ended up taking the equipment away from him with no words or guidance. (This was the only time we received questionable service). Getting off and on property was easy. We booked all except 2 excursions through trip advisor and had pretty awesome drivers who spoke decent enough English to communicate. The bar staff in all the bars were wonderful, but no one stood out as exceptional. The entertainment staff was great at getting people involved in activities. Darts, bowling, plinko, and corn hole were just a few. Our checkout was quick and easy, and we, of course, did not want to leave paradise.

This was our first trip to Punta Cana and we decided to stay at the Riu Palace Macao and were not disappointed. The property is smaller and we appreciated that. We never had trouble finding a lounger on the beach. The beach is beautiful, one of the best we’ve seen compared to Mexico and Jamaica in our opinion (not rocky just pure white sand). Great service with waiters on the beach asking if you needed a drink. The restaurants don’t require reservations and we never had to wait except for one night which was no big deal. Good cleaning in our room, friendly staff and entertainment crew, good food selection. We would definitely return to this property. Did not see the need to upgrade to elite as we had a great room with a good view. We have always appreciated the quality of Riu properties and this one did not disappoint. Would love to return. Thank you for the hospitality.

Mixed thoughts
Expected to get an Elite room as requested , through being a Gold member , confirmed by email , on arrival were denied.
Ok move on to the hotel.
Reception checking in , apart from room denied , it was quick and easy as we did online check in, staff were great and very polite.
The room , clean and kept clean , very happy with our housekeeper , credit to her .
Fridge filled daily.
Easy access , my wife has some mobility issues, room in a good easy access area.
Pool area , well laid out , but small area and a little cramped , plenty of beds.
Beach area , has lots of beds within the trees which I think was very nice , beach clean and not cramped.
Food , for us personally, not the best , tried the main restraint a few times both breakfast and evening , we feel the food was never really hot , sometimes not cooked through , Pepes pool bar was the same , but we do not condemn the food , it was just not the best.
Overall , we did enjoy the holiday.
The hotel is a nice hotel , RIU group are very good , we have 2 more holidays booked June and September this year.
Would I reccomend this hotel YES . It is not a horrible hotel , for us it was not quiet as good as expected in some areas.
Go back NO

Not a single complaint about this hotel, check was very swift and efficient, our room was sparkling clean and the housekeeping staff, particularly Josefina, were absolutely first class.
The pool bar staff were great, big shout out for Jose, Angel, Pablo, Wilton, Johan, Robinson and the best waiter on resort, Juanna, that girl just never stops.!!
The food was great, especially Krystal.
Many thanks to Thalia the server, very attentive, also Adrian in the steakhouse. Buffet had a very wide choice of food every sitting, there is always something for everyone at El Patio.
Kubuka, the Asian restaurant was terrific. The Italian restaurant was particularly good, with excellent pizzas and I would highly recommend the Chicken Fettucini Alfredo.
First time visiting the Dominican Republic having been to many other Caribbean islands and all I can say is I wish we’d visited years ago. Bavaro beach is gorgeous, it’s apparently the longest unbroken sand beach in the Caribbean, you can walk until you drop and you’ll still be nowhere near the end of it, lovely wide expanse of sand and beautiful turquoise water, however, if you’re a fan of calm ocean this isn’t for you, the waves could be rough at times and I like that.
This was our second Riu hotel having previously visited Riu Reggae in Montego Bay and this place is a massive hike up from there, I was hugely impressed with the quality of everything on offer here, the place is spotlessly clean, the staff never stop working. Also the gym and spa facilities are first class, however I would add more heavier dumbbells to the gym and they only go up to 25kg so you have to be creative with your training.
All things considered this was a brilliant late winter holiday and I would definitely come back to this hotel without hesitation.
We’d read all the negative reviews about this place before we came but I can honestly say I can’t relate to them, they must’ve been seriously looking for issues to complain about and if you look hard enough you will always find something, however I would t waste the energy, just come here and enjoy yourself, the resort is absolutely brilliant.!!!

Have been fortunate to stay at several Rui properties over the last few years in all different levels. This one was a bit of a disappointment. Room was very musty, air conditioning did not work properly but the biggest complaint is overall poor level of cleanliness. When checked in noticed towels in poor condition, stained and appeared dirty, glasses in room all looked dirty, walls looked dirty (but think mold is actually what I saw). Ate at the buffet the first few days. Noticed that the dishes, glassware and cutlery never felt or looked clean. Unfortunately my husband ended up with food poisoning and I ended up sick a day after him. Just couldn’t get back to feeling comfortable with the food after. The grounds of the hotel and amenities are fabulous but the hotel really needs to up its game with the cleanliness.

I am shocked at some of these reviews as this is genuinely a lovely hotel and some of the complaints I have read are ridiculous.
I am still here and due to go home in 3 days. Firstly, when my partner and I arrived we were in a room on the 1sr floor, right by the evening entertainment, it was so loud and we requested to be moved and they did the next day (Neither room had a damp smell) ..... the food was hit and miss and the restaurants were lovely. Pool area is good and the beach is stunning, yes there is abit of seaweed but it's a beach lol. The shopping village is nice but all the shops are really expensive but you can haggle to get the price down. The staff are so amazing, especially LUIS who was on the beach serving drinks, honestly such a lovely guy!! Only reason I have not given this 5 stars is because there is only coffee in the rooms and I like green tea which cannot be found on the resort. I wouldn't stay here again just because we like a more quieter resort amd feel like this is more a party resort but it is lovely!

The staff was very unprofessional. During the buffet, the chairs were dirty, and I asked the staff to switch or clean them, but they just used their towel to sweep the food off the chairs. The front staff didn't care to help call the vehicle company to translate. Dirty ASS water with particacles in the ices. The Staff didn't seem to like working there or helping out customers. Cleaning staff use the same dirty/wet ass pillowcase and you can smell it. They didn't even switch the bed sheet, because it still had black stains on it. Never again will we return or recommend it.

I'll start with the positives the entertainment was very good not like most resorts that we've been to. Live music,dj and shows all great and goes on till 11:15pm. Room the bed was very comfortable decorated nicely amenities good housekeeping decent. No musty smell a/c wouldn't adjust temperature on 21C all of the time.Grounds were beautiful and well kept. Pools were very clean and refreshing.Drinks were very good not watered down and some higher end brands.Staff was very good helpful and friendly. Now for the not so positive.Beach was loaded with sargassum seaweed and the only clean up was an occasional tractor going by with an open back trailer and guys with rakes and pitchforks not very effecient.Food was wellllllll we didn't starve always found something to eat plenty of selections but mislabeied or non labeled items some barely warm. Ala Cartes were okay I guess.Don't stay in rooms 4032-4047 or 4059-4074 unless you're a fan of pigeons. They make noise pooped on our drying rack, deck, deck chair and railing.Told the front desk they acted concerned but they only asked housekeeping to clean it. The next day same thing had to track them down to clean it DISGUSTING.We typically don't leave reviews but the sargassum and pigeon thing we thought was worth mentioning. And by reading the other reviews which we did we felt really good about our decision to stay here.I wouldn't say don't go just decide what you can deal with or overlook. But do yourself a big favor and refuse those above rooms.
