My husband and I spent 6 nights at the resort. Here is our summary: The staff are wonderful. Friendly, responsive, professional. The food was good. I wouldn't say it was 5-star. We had some steak that was tough. But breakfast - I loved that! The buffet in the lobby restaurant was very very good. But, you know, as expected, making mixed drinks isn't their forte. Their version of a martini is a glass of vermouth with a splash of gin. Ok. I drank champagne instead, which I prefer anyway. Their pina colada mix is delicious, too! We really weren't down there to drink. The property, however, is another story. It's a nice resort. The grounds are beautiful and well kept. But the infrastructure is showing its age. We stayed in what is called the Presidential Suite. The price point was at the "preferred" level, a notch above basic. It's large: 2 bedrooms and three bathrooms (one's a half-bath; one of the full bathrooms as a sunken spa tub, which we didn't use; not my thing); a central area with a large dining table (which we never used); a large living room with a TV. It also has a wrap-around balcony with lots of seating. Here were the issues: It's at the edge of the resort near beach (adjacent to the family resort), so it's a short walk, which is great. But it's incredibly noisy as it's next to a restaurant, so there was barely a time when we could relax in our suite in the quiet. There was yelling and the sound of walkies and phones and clattering. All day. In the evening, there was also outdoor entertainment, which is understandable and appropriate, but ugh...At least there seemed to be a cutoff time for the noise. 11 pm seemed to be the cutoff. We like to retire early, which I realize isn't the norm for most people at a resort, but this place was billed as adults-only and quiet. I guess I should have lowered my expectations. The room itself needed some attention: Most of the wall switches did nothing. No one showed us how to operate anything so we were trying all of them constantly. In the living room, many things seemed out of order, including the celing fan. So it was WARM and we didn't use the space. The drapes in the master BR didn't shut completely. Luckily, I always have an eye mask to block out the light, and my husband isn't affected by that stuff. The sliding doors didn't work completely right - I think they need to check those and have them adjusted. It was just us in the suite, but be aware in case you are traveling with someone else and want privacy. In the second bedroom, which we didn't use, there was an HVAC intake vent, and it sounded like a jet engine. It never shuts off. Enjoy your sleep! There was a bizarre odor I can't describe, that was mildly in the air the whole time. It wasn't severe, and I wondered if it was because of the room location. Right in front of our entrance there was a pool of water, because the roof was leaking. They did eventually get it resolved, but we had to be careful not to slip. And the big one: NO HOT WATER. 1 or 2 days it was lukewarm. And then on the day we left - it was fixed. We laughed about that. At least we got a hot shower before leaving for airport! All told, it was a good break. I know it doesn't sound like it from this list - but it was. Nice staff, and we met some fun people. We made the decision to just be chill. Because at the end of the day, we were at a resort, after all! We were lucky to be able to be there. However, I would stay somewhere else next time!

When we arrived there was a glitch when we checked in. When we spoke with one of the managers, Angel, he listened with true concern and made our experience truly incredible, due to the personal care he gave us. We have been to other resorts in Punta Cana, but will be coming back to this resort. I cannot recommend this resort highly enough. Excellent food, gorgeous location and thank you to Angel, a truly great holiday.

Myself and my wife just spend a week at this resort and overall this place is average at best. Let's start off with what's good about the resort 1. The grounds on this and the family side are beautiful and well maintained. The week we were there they were also doing upgrades to the walkways and pools in the villas which is great to see. 2. These pools were also great as they had 2 pools and each offered totally different experiences. The main pool by the lobby was more active with activities and events had a DJ there every afternoon. The 2nd pool an infinity style located near the beach had more of a relaxing vibe. So this pool is great if all you came to do was relax. 3. The service and drinks was also great. Didn't matter wherever my wife and I went the service was excellent and always got a smile from the workers. Here I have to give a big shout-out to Angel from guest services as in our room the bed was rock hard and was killing my back so I checked with the front desk to see if we could upgrade to one of the preferred rooms as we were told these rooms had softer beds but there wasn't any available. That's when Angel stepped up and told us he would get one of the new softer mattress delivered to our room. And low and behold when we got back to our room a few hours later we had a new mattress. SO YES THE SERVICE WAS AWESOME 4. The rooms and overall resort was very clean 5. The shows at night were above average. Now let's talk about what's not great at this resort 1. The rooms are very dated and had stuff broken in the room. Luckily our air conditioning worked good and we didn't have any leaks in our room. But talking to a lot of people on the resort it seemed like hardly anyone's air conditioning worked and if you were in a first floor room you had a leak in the ceiling. 2. The beach is Rocky in places and the rocks are cover in slimy algae which makes it very slippery. There's tons of fish in this part of the beach which didn't bother myself but trying to make people aware. Also with a small village next to the resort people from that village were actually out fishing on the area designated for swimming. 3. Last but not least the FOOD at the resort is a what really brings down the rating. To start the buffet being big you would think they would be lots of selection but it's not and lunch or dinner everything was the same. The small buffet at the beach on the family side gave me food poisoning and I spent one very rough day in my room let's just say (first time in 15 years traveling to punta Cana I ever gotten sick) and I know 100% what made me sick as it was the only thing I had different from my wife that day and she was fine. As for the LA carte restaurants which is better then the buffets is still only average at best. I'm the end this was our 2nd trip to this resort. The first being our honeymoon 12 years ago (then I would have recommend people to to this resort) and after our most recent trip I would not recommend this resort to anyone and will never go back myself

This was our first time staying at an all inclusive resort anywhere so I have nothing to compare so here is our opinion and experience along with pros and cons. The resort is a nice size and easy to find your way around. It was nice to go to the "family side" on occasion. Fortunately, we left at the start of Spring break because things on that side were definitely winding up! The grounds are well maintained and clean. The rooms do show some age and the electrical outlets are lacking and none are near the bed.. They are also very lose and the connection was difficult to maintain. We stayed at a junior suite and it was comfortable for the two of us. it did have tub at one end of the room but no jets and we didn't use it at all. The patio was small but adequate and the staff provided a hammock when requested. The mini fridge was stocked daily with soft drinks and a couple of beers and we were told to request other options we may prefer. The bathroom was large but as other reviewers mentioned, hot water was an issue, especially in late afternoon when everyone was probably returning to their room and getting ready for the evening. Cleaning was ok but not consistent. Sometimes we had someone come in during the evening and do a "turn down service". Towels were replenished inconsistently. The resort did have daily exercise type classes such as stretching and yoga on the beach and a fun cycling class that took place in the pool. Obviously, a lot of people were there for the alcohol and it definitely was available as desired. I don't drink but enjoyed many of the non alcoholic options and my husband enjoyed some more "spirited" options. The wait staff was friendly and attentive. The meals were ok. We arrived on a Tuesday and were advised by the concierge to make reservations for the week. Unfortunately, reservations start on Monday for the week and many of the options were already full. We ended up eating at the same restaurant for 4 evenings but they had different themes. We did enjoy dinner at the hibachi place on the family side and at B Loved and Tao cat. We found the staff to be friendly and helpful. The concierge service left a little to be desired especially when trying to get information on arranging airport transportation. It took us 3 attempts to find someone with accurate information to verify cab service. All in all, I would recommend this resort for a relaxing vacation and time in the sun. Evening entertainment took place at the bar patio and was nothing special and it ended around 10 or 11.

I just got back from spending 10 wonderful days at this resort. I was so nervous about going because of the negative reviews. The staff was friendly, food was yummy, room was good, pools were wet (I'd bring a floaty for the pool). I also brought cat treats for the cats and next time I will bring flea collars for the dogs. It was not overrun by the animals at all. It's a small resort and not noisey, which was great. Minerva and Andy at the front check in desk were amazing. I will definitely go back.

Mostly a good resort with good food, ambiance and nice clean room. Beach and pools also good. On average the staff do not seem very warm and welcoming, not unpleasant but not overly happy like in Mexico or Cuba. Only a very few waiters seemed to want to be friendly. Before leaving I notified Sunwing I had a documented (Accessible Card) disability and asked them to ensure I got a ground floor room as stairs are difficult for me, ( 3 ruptured permanently unrepairable discs in my low back ). On arrival I was disappointed and shocked to be told I was going to be on on the THIRD FLOOR!!!!! They said Sunwing did not notify them of my situation. They said they can try to get me second floor but it never happened. It was a painful unpleasant week for me and I think this was a disgusting lack of care and sympathy. So I am very reserved about recommending this resort for that reason.

Our stay was the last week of February. We have been to Punta Cana many times and this is more of 3.5 star resort at best. This property is NOT on the Bavaro Beach beach but Pearl beach. I guess there is a reason walking in either direction there is nothing being built. Older resort we were on the Adults Only side and they are making attempts to improve but a long way to go. The grounds are keep up and clean. I thought the food for the most part was good and some restaurants were better than others. Tao Cat, Rodeo, Sorrento , and Thallassa were all good. The Beloved , steak house was awful, and the resort pet dog Toby(?) would not even eat the left over steak. The Rodeo steak house on the family side was awesome not sure why the difference. The food trucks on the beach were a disaster so poorly run. I thought the employees were very nice bar tenders Ashely, Carlos and Loniel were fantastic. Vanessa at the spa, Domingo and Lennin at the breakfast buffet were great . If you want a nice deep beach this isn't the place. I thought photo shopping is incredible because when you get there you be disappointed. Unless there is some kind of deal we wont be back.

The most AWESOME staff of any resort we have been to. Ashley, Carlos, and Lionel are the Greatest bartenders in the Dominican Republic. If you would like a peaceful adult only vacation with plenty of activities to do, don’t hesitate to visit the Catalonia Royal Bavaro.

When we arrived there was no power or water, the generator failed and the backup generature did not work, the power and water went off a few times during our 2 week stay. They sold the 18 hole golf course to a developer who is building condos and a 18 hole course for the condo owners. There is no contract in place to provide an 18 hole golf option. When we asked they kept saying the 9 hole is still open, with the number of golfers 9 holes would not work even if they limited it to you could only play 9 holes per day. One day we returned from golf and the safe would not open, no problem security came and opened it with their master code, I found it strange that the combination didn't work, and started putting an umbrella agains the door inside the closet so it would fall over if the door was opened. A few days later we came back the umbrella was leaning agianst the wall instead of the door and the other door (with the safe) was off the track. Maintenance had to replace the pin because it was broken. I startered using one of those large cloth pins to hold down towels in the wind on the track rail and sure enough it moved, so the closest door was being opened.

First, the good since it’s a shorter list: The swim up bar – drinks and service were fantastic. The pool was clean and comfortable for mid February! The beach had a beautiful breeze and beach service was very quick! Beach was a little crowded for our taste but no issue finding chairs. Drinks were always strong and flowing! The bad: Privilege: the only thing from the list of privilege “perks” we experienced was the sectioned off beach area, which was fine but we opted for the “regular” area 2 of our 3 beach days. It was a complete waste of money. We received no turn down service, no expedited check-in, no beach towels in our room upon arrival which would have saved me an extra tip to the front desk because we also didn’t receive towel cards at check-in. We didn’t receive 10% off our gift purchases due to language barrier and honestly just not having the energy/interest to pursue it further. The room: dirty, unkept, shower didn’t drain, bad paint jobs. Extremely thin blanket on the bed – requested extra blankets at the front desk and didn’t receive them so had to call. We were also promised a “welcome gift” of cava upon arrival for our anniversary and never received it. Mini bar was only soda and beer, our fridge didn’t work the entirety of our stay, no cream for the coffee, the patio door required finagling to lock. Our bracelets didn’t work to open the door so back to the front desk we went. If we were room people that would probably be a longer list but we spent most of our time away from the room, luckily. The food: bad, bad, bad. We don’t expect much from an all-inclusive but jeesh it was bad. I also have a gluten allergy and the menus were inconsistent. I ordered an appetizer marked without the wheat symbol, told them about my allergy, they brought the appetizer, I started eating it, then they brought another plate of the same appetizer without some of the seasoning and said it was the gluten free one (so I apparently ate a not-gluten free item). We ordered filet mignon at one restaurant and it was literally strip steak folder in half lol. We’re not major foodies but we can identify a filet mignon from a regular steak. We ate at all three buffets on the property (two on the family side) and each one was as disappointing as the other. The BEST food we had was from the food truck on the beach. The other meals, at best, were just “fine” and at worst were inedible. You have to make reservations in advance, we tried to change a couple after hearing bad reviews for some restaurants and weren’t able to. Wayfinding signage was lacking and we had a hard time getting around our first day until we found a map of both the adult and family side online. The chairs at the swim up pool all had towels on them before 8am – so silly. We did the beach in the mornings then could always find somewhere to put our stuff at the pool after lunch so that seemed unnecessary. The other pool close to the beach and beach chairs had plenty of chairs available. The resort lost power for a few hours on our first full day. We were finishing up breakfast when it went out and no one panicked like it was a regular occurrence. No big deal because we just went to the beach but water was also out when we first arrived. I don’t know if we were just lucky enough to lose both during our stay or if that happens more often. In all, we should have requested a different room the moment we arrived but were trying to not be “those guests” and just make the most of our stay but lessons learned because it didn’t improve the entire time. If you have food allergies, I would highly recommend a different brand – we’ve stayed at many other resorts who have been consistently considerate of my allergy so I was surprised this was such an issue. The family side looked much bigger and nicer but as parents of a toddler, we were on vacation for slow, peaceful, quiet time.

We were only at this hotel for one night because our flight got delayed 24 hours. All I can say is I’m glad that’s all I had to spend here. The resort looks lovely from the outside but don’t be fooled. All the ponds everywhere attract bugs and ducks. There were cute little sun bed areas within the tree but there was bird poo and duck poo all over the cushions. The amount of cats we seen were crazy. We also seen a rat. The golf cart boy told us the cats take care of the bugs and the rats 😬 it is big grounds and no elevators as it’s old buildings. There was a jacuzzi tub in our room but we couldn’t get any hot water no matter how long we ran it. I filled the bath and when I turned the jets on 2 jets came flying out, like the whole jet part. Thankfully I was not in the tub as what I see behind these jets was super disturbing. Yuck. So dirty. The smoke alarm would not stop chirping . We called the front desk multiple times to send someone as I could not sleep with this repetitive noise. Finally after the 4th call and a couple hours someone showed up. They said if we needed a golf cart to the lobby to use the phone in the room. The phone in our room did not work. The smell of the room was also not amazing. That musty wet smell. The beach was full of seaweed although there was a guy out there cleaning it. The Buffett was the only thing going for this hotel.

This resort is labeled "5 star", unfortunately, from my perspective, it didn't live up to that expectation. Upsides: The staff have been excellent. All of our interactions have been very enjoyable. They go out of their way to accommodate us, and I think that they do appreciate our attempts at conversation, given our limited command of Spanish. Although attached to the "family" resort of Catalonia Bavaro it manages to retain its own quiet and peaceful atmosphere, ( a must for those of us, of advancing years, who prefer peace and quiet. A caveat to this is that there appears to be a major construction job going on during the day, which does impact that peace and quiet. We have enjoyed all the food offerings at the various restaurants, as well as at the buffet on the family side, which at times was like a zoo! Downsides: We booked a "privileged" room, but in all honesty, I am not sure what the benefits were of doing that. The room was quite "beat up", and, to me, looked as though it needed a restoration and makeover. Maybe some of the issues are down to the humidity, as most of the metal hinges showed a lot of corrosion, however, I am sure that that could be mitigated by selecting good quality components. The paving around the lower pool was very disappointing as, at times, you took your life in your hands walking on it. In my opinion, that whole area needs the paving to be reset. When we first arrived, we had no wifi in the room for 2 days. Not ideal, as we had to go outside the room to get Internet access. In addition, during our stay, there were a number of power outages, and even a 2-hour break in the water supply. Conclusion: The resort is billed as "5 star". All the staff went out of their way to provide that kind of service. Unfortunately, other aspects of the resort, for me, let that rating down. It certainly didn't live up to my expectations of 5 stars. I will say that this was my first all-inclusive in DR, so I don't have anything to compare it to, only my own expectation. Would I stay here again? No. I will want to visit another similar resort, (not Catalonia), to give me a reasonable comparison. We had an extremely pleasant stay, but there was no "Wow" factor.

We enjoyed our stay in Punta Cana, especially the beach where there were plenty of chairs and enough shade. The staff was kind and welcoming. We also appreciated the wild, non-commercial side of the Dominican Republic, which sets it apart and is very much appreciated. We had beautiful weather, and it's much less industrial than Mexico. However, we experienced food poisoning on the first day at Thalassa, and three of us who had the same dish got sick. The service for lunch was really slow, and in the lobby/piano bar, there was no one to serve drinks. We paid for a hotel with a jacuzzi, but we had to pay extra to use it, even though no one was in the jacuzzi. The room had a 1980s design, while a renovated room was available right next door. This was our last trip to Punta Cana. We were there 20 years ago and thought we would give the Dominican Republic another try, but nothing has changed. We will definitely choose Mexico for our next vacation.

We recently spent five nights at the Royal Catalonia Bavaro - Adults Only, and while we overall had a good experience, there were a few areas that didn’t quite meet the 5-star standard the resort claims. Let’s start with the positives—the resort itself is stunning, with well-manicured gardens, a variety of good restaurants, and an pretty good selection of food. We appreciated the diverse dining options, which kept meals interesting and enjoyable throughout our stay. Another highlight was the deep-tissue massage we had at the spa—it was absolutely fantastic and the perfect way to recover from our long flight from France! The beach is beautiful, but unfortunately, the water was not swimmable due to rocks and shallow depth, which was very disappointing. Additionally, being next to the larger family-friendly Catalonia Bavaro, we often found the noise from the entertainment and discotheque spilling over, which took away from the otherwise peaceful adults-only atmosphere. Now, onto the rooms—this was our biggest letdown. While spacious, they are tired and in need of refurbishment. We had issues with water temperature not being very hot, a leaking handbasin, and the bathroom not being as clean as it should be. These maintenance and cleanliness concerns definitely didn’t align with what we would expect from a 5-star property. Overall, we enjoyed our stay, thanks to the beautiful setting, good food, and great spa treatments, but we do feel the rooms need urgent updates to truly match the resort’s reputation. If the management invests in improving accommodations and soundproofing, this could easily be a top-tier adults-only resort.

🥲A disappointing experience at Catalonia Hotel & Resort - Only Adults I like to provide fair and objective feedback, without the intention of denigrating, but I think it is important for future tourists to know what to expect. 👎My experience at Catalonia Hotel & Resort - Only Adults was extremely disappointing, and the reality I found myself in was completely different from the expectations created by this hotel. 🤝Although we paid from the start for a Privileged room, upon arrival we were lied to that what we were offered was what we paid for. In order to really receive what we were promised, we had to pay an additional few hundred dollars. The surprise? The room was the same – old, with an unbearable smell of mold, damaged furniture and not at all renewed in over 20 years, as the employees themselves confirmed to us. 🙌We had to spend 8 days in an unsanitary room, with an unbearable smell, without any real solution from the staff. 🤏🏼Only after I insisted and explained to them that this smell was worsening my health problems (sinusitis), on the last day the room I had originally paid for “miraculously” appeared. 👎Clear proof that they lied to us and that, in fact, Privileged rooms existed, only they were not offered to customers according to the reservation. 🤘🏻In addition to this outrageous situation, the attitude of the staff – from the reception to the management – was extremely unprofessional and disrespectful. Instead of finding solutions, they behaved in a defiant and totally inappropriate way for a hotel of this level. ✌️I am not writing these things to denigrate, but simply to share the real experience I went through. I would have liked to have known these details before choosing this hotel, which is why I think it is right to share them with those who are planning their vacations. 👌🏼If you are planning a vacation in the Dominican Republic, I recommend that you be very careful when choosing a hotel. Catalonia Hotel & Resort - Only Adults did not provide the promised services and demonstrated a lack of professionalism that I would not have wanted to encounter on a relaxing vacation. 👉This is just my personal experience, but I believe that tourists have the right to be correctly informed.

Our room was a Deluxe Junior Suite. It had a King bed. Large tub in room. Separate seating area. Balcony area with comfortable seating. Large shower had plenty of hot water. There are no ocean view rooms. Two very nice pools with lounge chairs and cushioned beds. The resort is walkable and the sister hotel next door is a wonderful place to walk in evenings. Meals were presented well. They were 7/10 in my opinion. We particularly enjoyed the Asian Tao Cat. Every employee was helpful. Management speaks English. Staff do not. But they are so accommodating we always had a good laugh with them. Service in restaraunts was exceptional. No request was too much. The actual beach was lovely but there was not enough shade in the Priviledge area. It was the worst resort for towel reserving I have ever been to. People would reserve with towels and not take their chairs until 1 or 2 pm. Having saved them by 8:30. As a result there was one day there were no available chairs anywhere on the beach. There did not seem to be any other workers on beach other than servers. The other issue was the continuous beach sellers. And I do mean continuous. They do not quietly move along the shore. They yell out Beep Beep or ring a metal bell. Even when I was obviously resting or reading they would interrupt until you answered. They had parrots squawking etc. they walked up among guest chairs. Even in the privileged area. The water is very shallow. Hip height. There is 90% vegetation. Not likely much resort can do about this. If you like a nice pool. Fantastic service and immaculate grounds and rooms this is your place. If you like to swim in ocean the beach area is not the place for you. The staff are all the best I have ever seen.

This resort can be characterized as an average adult-only destination rather than a five-star establishment. Upon arrival, several amenities, including the fridge, ceiling fan, floor lamp, and some wall lights, were non-functional, and the balcony clothesline was detached from the wall. Unfortunately, the fan and lights were never repaired during the stay. The mini bar offered only two small cans of beer and three bottles of soda. The nightly entertainment at the adjacent family resort was subpar and difficult to enjoy due to excessively bright background lighting. Additionally, the buffets lacked variety, and the Steak House experience was particularly disappointing. On a positive note, the beach and pool areas were well-maintained, with ample seating available, and the staff were notably friendly and helpful. Overall, while the visit was satisfactory for an adult-only resort, it does not warrant a return.
