My husband and I were dreaming of an exotic holiday over New Year's eve period and we decided to go to Mexico, Riviera Maya where we had heard many great things. We chose the Rosewood Mayakoba as it seemed to be the most beautiful and high quality resort in the area, plus we know the Rosewood group well and they usually never disappoint. However this time, we left regretting having chosen this place. To begin with, the rates are as high as a holiday In Maldives, where we have been many times, where the beaches are spectacular and the service impecable. I am not writing this review to compare the two, as they are very different destinations, but just to say that paying what we paid we expected a paradise. Not only did we not feel in paradise, we actually felt completely "scammed" the entire time we were there. Weeks before arriving we received many emails asking us if they could assist us with some activity booking (ok, that's nice), but also giving us all the schedule of the week regarding the restaurants at the hotel saying we needed to decide before arriving where we would want to have dinner every night. Already then, I could feel they were slightly intense but we thought ok they are simply organised and trying to help, can't blame them for that. That said, for us, the beauty of a holiday is not having to plan anything once there, to be able to arrive and discover naturally the place and relax and decide on the minute what we feel like doing, otherwise we would have stayed in London where everything in our life is a schedule. We booked a Beach House with plunge pool. When we arrived it was quite rundown and not cleaned properly. Forget any proper room service at all, we tried ordering twice a bottle of wine to drink while relaxing in the pool, impossible! After one hour of calling them, they were still unable to locate the bottle (it wasn't a special bottle for those wondering, quite the opposite). Basically, anything that isn't beer or mezcal, they have no idea, they overcharge for it and most importantly they never find it! Even for New Years eve, we wanted to have some champagne during dinner: it took 4 members of staff, our private butler and the "sommelier" (if you can call that a sommelier) to find a decent bottle after pressuring them for an hour. Speaking of the butler, they were all very nice, very friendly and trying constantly to accommodate our needs, however not their fault that the hotel is completely dysfunctional. The beach is horrendous, not even close to what it looks like on the pictures, full of algae, also tiny, to the point where they were unable to give us proper seats every single day. After complaining of course they would make an effort and find us something but every day was a struggle. (Not to mention this beach was suppose to be the adult only one so supposedly less busy and more relaxing). Nothing relaxing about having to stand in the sun during 15min each day waiting for them to sort out a chair! And don't get me started on the service at the beach, 40min to order a Diet Coke. I could go on for pages about things that happened that we were upset about. The resort does of course have positive things as well. For instance, as mentioned earlier, the staff is very friendly and always trying to help. The spa is beautiful, the breakfast dishes amazing (even if generally the food wasn't great at all). If you come with kids, they do seem to have everything you need to entertain them and help you generally. The place just has an overall feeling of being ripped off all the time for the price you're paying. Every opportunity they have to overcharge you, they take it. You simply cannot charge these rates for a beach like this, terrible service and food and a mediocre quality on every aspect. We have traveled all over the world and I am not the kind of customer to complain ever or leave bad reviews (in fact you can see on my profile, this trip is the first time I have ever left a review). It's just someone needs to say it, Rosewood Mayakoba is completely overrated!

This is our third visit to the beautiful Mayakobo, a secure oasis amongst all the mayhem of Cancun. We stayed at Rosewood on our two previous visits. At the moment we are staying at Banyon Tree next door which is an equally beautiful property and very similar in many ways, although Rosewood distinguishes itself. During Rosewood stays, we go over to Banyan Tree for the occasional dinner and we are currently doing it in reverse. If you have never before been to Mayakoba I can highly recommend it. We go for the ocean front suites rather than lagoon views. The way it works is the hotels will book restaurants for you in any of the properties and transport you there and back. The top two properties are definitely Rosewood and Banyan Tree. We dined at Casa Del Lago at Rosewood. This has got to be one of the best restaurants in Mayakobo. Every course was excellent, wines by the glass were very good and they have terrific champagnes by the glass using the corovin system. Our waiter was Sergio and his knowledge and passion on F and B was infectious. We discussed wines, champagnes and various Rosewood properties as well as restaurants in other countries. Sergio is a sommelier as well as having worked as a chef. He made our night…as did the chef.

Just as Magical as the first time around! This was our second time at RW Mayakoba and we were afraid that it would lose its Magic the second time, but nope.. it was just as amazing, if not better. The Halloween and Dia de Los muertos celebrations were spectacular. The service was above and beyond. Our butler Saiid was great!! We brought our dog, Sadie and they treated her like a baby. They gave her a separate fridge for her food, room service menu, a bed, and even got her a sitter for when we wanted to go to the spa. They even remembered our preferences from the first time and replaced the bottle of mezcal in our room with tequila. We are already planning our next trip back.

This resort is, not unexpectedly, a complete paradise. But what is exquisitely special is the warmth and inclusion of the staff. If you are lucky enough to arrive on a beautiful day, like we did, you'll take a short boat ride along the small river to meet your butler who will accompany you to your suite. Our primary butler was Gaby. She attended to our every need -- from making our reservations to small surprises. She worked seamlessly with the other members of the team to arrange transportation, too. Our suite was impeccable. The most gorgeous, toes-in-sand view of the ocean, a plunge pool, and daily beach set up, always ready for us. Our beach attendants were perfectly attentive. We enjoyed complimentary snacks each day from cucumber with tamarind to churros and caramel. Beach menu and service were similarly impeccable. The spa has a remarkable river view with welcoming staff and an assortment of offerings. A 90 minute massage is the perfect start to a stay! There is no end to the dining options as you can pick from Rosewood's offerings or the adjacent properties. The primary breakfast spot is a highlight of the property. Like many of the other options, it offers a gorgeous pool and river view. We had amazing service here from the hostess to the servers each charming in their own right. The Continental breakfast is excellent, but don't miss the menu offerings either. My spouse and I argue over which dish is the best, but do your best to try them all! The Heuvos Divorciados is delicious but the traditional pancakes are also just right on a rainy day. For dinner on property, one highlight was Agave Azul. It offers sushi but so much more plus a fantastic river view. You can also dine at Zapote Bar and enjoy live music and inspired, fresh cuisine. Truly a not-to-be missed adventure is La Ceiba Garden and Kitchen, a community dinner offered Wednesday and Saturday in the stunning greenhouse. The scenery is beautiful, but what is most remarkable is the way in which the staff (we were hosted by Sylvia whose enthusiasm and warmth are absolutely contagious) folds you into the moment and welcomes your visit to the culture of the evening. It is truly a sensory experience -- fresh herbs scenting the air, a fire pit in the distance, the chef (Jonathan Alvarado! I hope to enjoy his meals again soon), sous chefs, hostess and other attendants circulating and sharing their enthusiasm for the cuisine and culture they are sharing, the musicians strumming and meeting the moment of the celebration. If all of that wasn't enough, we were lucky enough to have our dinner on the night that wine importer Mary Taylor was visiting, offering her wines, and sharing her own story. It is appropriately adults only but goodness it was a shining star experience. The beach does have sand whales in the distance but the water in October was warm and clear, very little seaweed, and a perfect ripple to the ocean. We are beach, not pool, people but both pools we saw were also beautiful. You are offered complimentary bikes to go around the property but there are endless golf carts and drivers about who will happily take you where you need to go whether at Rosewood or an adjacent property. There is beautiful wildlife here. You will catch glimpses of geckos and stunning birds, but the pesky bird life that steals your snack or breakfast bread at some resorts is virtually absent here due to the implementation of their bird control program.. . . There are many falcon handlers walking the perimeter of the pools, beaches, and outdoor seating restaurants. It's fun to watch the falcons glide about. Finally, but never lastly, housekeeping here is simply standout. From morning freshening to turn down service. I really wish I could name each of the people who helped to keep us comfortable during our stay. I'm sure I'm missing other remarkable aspects of this property, but we will sample those the next time. Rosewood Mayakoba , thank you for this much needed vacation and for your consummate hospitality. Until we meet again!

After visiting Rosewood Mayakoba for the first time, it’s obvious why this property is one of the Crown Jewels of Rosewood’s portfolio. We have never experienced such impeccable service with mind-blowingly personal touches around every corner. Every member of the staff was so welcoming and accommodating, from our butlers Gerry and Valeria, to the spa staff (especially Gustavo who even coached us through the cold plunge!). Each employee we encountered was kind, caring, and delightful. It honestly felt like we were in a magical world—transported away from the everyday challenges of real life. The food and beverage program is the best I’ve encountered in my travels. From excellent tequila tastings (and education!) at Agave Azul, to the incredible tostadas at La Fondita, and the pitch perfect beach bites at Aqui Me Quedo—it’s clear why Rosewood Mayakoba winds up on so many “best of” lists. Zapote Bar was a special treat with finely crafted cocktails and live music that kept the party going. Visiting La Isla Secreta was a highlight and such a unique experience. We even made new friends that we have stayed in touch with—it just felt so special. Other highlights include Champagne O’clock on the beach, riding bikes to the FABULOUS spa, and the Thursday night Mexican Grill (where we ate way too many of Chef Jessica’s churros—the best we’ve ever tasted). Leaving the property was bittersweet—there is some sort of magic at every turn while you’re there. You just can’t put your finger on it. The thoughtfulness behind every decision is so very apparent as a guest, and yet the entire staff made every detail seem effortless. I have no doubt that an immense amount of planning and communication goes into every guests’ stay, so I would just like to say THANK YOU and BRAVO!! We will be back again and again.

Wow we had the most amazing trip. Breakdown below: Room: 5/5 We stayed in the wellness suite, which was gorgeous and steps away from the spa. Amenities were numerous, and the room itself was beautiful, clean, and peaceful. It felt like a private oasis nestled in the jungle, you are completely isolated from neighbors and the only people we saw was the occasional boat going by. Not too much else to say here - it was perfect. Food: 4/5 After reading mixed reviews about the food I was anticipating this to be a low point but was pleasantly surprised. All of our meals were good, we had La Ceiba dinner, Saffron (Banyon Tree restaurant, was actually my least favorite meal. Service and food were fine I guess, nothing extraordinary), Aqui Mi Quedo for lunch at the beach (tacos were amazing), Mexican Grill, and Zapote Bar. Sure, it was expensive, but this trip was not about pinching pennies. Resort food is always expensive, and this is no exception. Portions were good and flavors were good. Sure, I have had better food at other restaurants around the world, but I have never had better food at a resort. I gave it a 4/5 because while it was good, only a few dishes blew me away with their deliciousness. Those would be: any fish taco on the beach, the eggplant dip at Zapote, the fish dish at La Ceiba, pastor tacos at Mexican Grill. Spa: 5/5 Can't speak to the treatments because I didn't get a massage, but the sauna/steam/cold plunge/hot tub situation blew me away. The service there is amazing (ice cold towels carefully brought to you in steam and sauna, cucumber water refills while I'm in hot tub), and the physical space is not only gorgeous but enormous. Amazing beauty products in the shower area. The pool is beautiful, and we enjoyed time spent there and a couple of yoga classes in the morning. Gym looked clean and well appointed but I didn't work out while I was there. Service: 4/5 The service was overall very good. I docked one point because there were a bunch of mixups with the complimentary fruit and juice meant to be provided in our suite every day. We eventually got it (one day it got delivered to the beach instead since it was late) but it was a thing we had to ask about every day. The butlers and manager were all pretty good about getting it fixed up though. The rest of our service was great. There were amazing little touches everywhere in our turndown service and welcome gift from housekeeping and butlers. I already spoke about the spa staff who go above and beyond. Beach service was overall wonderful but maybe a tad slow one or two days. Things I worried about before we came that ended up being not a problem - the heat (beach breeze kept things reasonable, but I'm used to the heat and like it), mosquitos (didn't see any? I had no bites), seaweed (blew in a little in the late afternoon, but it didn't affect our experience. water is nice and clear in the mornings), mediocre food (ended up being quite good). Overall, the resort is amazing. The setup of the rooms, pools, and beach looked far far better than any of the other resorts in Mayakoba. I liked that it felt small and quiet. The beach at Aqui Mi Quedo was incredibly peaceful and relaxing. I absolutely loved biking everywhere. I don't do resort vacations basically ever, but I wanted luxurious relaxation this vacation and I absolutely got it. Yes, this place is expensive. Yes, it is worth it.

Stayed a few times at Banyan Tree Mayakoba and heard good reviews about Rosewood so decided to give it a try. Booked for five nights in a WellnessSuite. Booking: 3/5 Found a good deal for Black Friday sale in November and booked five nights for end of May. Rate dictated a prepayment of 2 nights at time of booking. Rosewood's booking site does not have a space for the credit card CVV when you book so be prepared to be inconvenienced by a rejected card charge and then either emails /phone calls to tell them your CVV code so they can charge your card Transfer/ check in / check out 1/5 Booked arrival and departure transfers from airport with booking at a discounted rate. Single transfer is 240 USD but round trip is 420 USD. Arrival transfer includes 4 corona beers and 2 bottle waters with free wifi. Our vehicle was a bit of a mess with a baby seat and toys in the front seat and back truck area. He also sped the whole way and tended to tailgate. Departure transfer gives you 2 bottle of water and was much more safer. Upon arrival check in is done standing at a small table outside. We were then whisked away on boat to the dock of our room. Lucky for us the boat did not leave as the door to the room was still locked from the other side. We had to wait outside for 15 minutes while they got someone to open the door to let us in from the terrace. Rooms 4/5 The Wellness suite was the only really great thing about the resort. They are huge and only 5 years old. You get complimentary nuts that they are supposed to replenished on a daily basis, fruit tray with a few mangoes that they did replenish daily and water bottles replenished daily. We did not get the Mezcal amenity as they took it away but they gave us a bottle of champagne to celebrate our Anniversary. The room is very quiet as no kids are allowed in this section of the resort. Unfortunately the washroom amenities are lacking. Other visitors have reported getting indoor and outdoor slippers. We only had outdoor ones and got indoor ones on the second last night. Unlike Banyan Tree, you get no washroom amenities at all and have to ask for limited items. Housekeeping was good with exceptional jobs done by Lilli and Elena. They also have aromatherapy capsules you can attach to the shower. They could not supply a list of scents so some one had to bring in a bag full for us to look at. You also get daily complimentary power juice shots but you have to order the night before. In-room dining 1/5 The menu for in-room dining is not that extensive. Banyan Tree has a larger one and the food we did have was not anything special. The best was probably the breakfast as it had large amounts of fruit of your choice, bread and toast of your choice and any main of your choice. Desserts were boring and bland. The Pomodoro pasta was dry. The Guac and chips is small so ask for extra chips. Food costs also high - 2 burgers cost about 80 USD. Dining 2/5 We had a special destination dinner at the beach and they set up an nice table and bonfire on the beach. Our server Bonie and food was good but they messed up sending over a Mexican Trio that was to play for 45 minutes during dinner. I asked Bonie near the end of the meal and he checked and said they would take off the cost and comp us a bottle of champagne that I ordered with dinner. No one came by to offer a reason or an apology. I emailed Fernanda the next day to complain and she said they tried to contact us but that is not true as I was in the unit the rest of the night and the whole next day. . She offered to send them to our unit later that day to play on our terrace. Getting them the next day on our small terrace is really not special. They finally decided to comp us our dinner that night as we were eating in. One would expect Rosewood to have celebrations down pat and not miss out on a detail like this and know how to apologize for messing up. Overall paid about 550 USD for set up fee and 750 USD for dinner. Breakfast at Aqui Me Quedo (adults only ) was over 80 USD for small single french toast and avocado toast and 2 coffees. Lunch at Punta Bonita is better as they give you salsa and chips complimentary and vegetable apps. But be prepared for a lot of kids as it is overlooking the kiddie pool area. Dinner at Casa Del Lago is a pop up Italian and steak for the next six months. We also had dinner at Aquinos Me Quedo and this was perhaps then best dinner with service and good food. But again you will have lost of kids. We saw 3 younger kids playing with the tray holding cutlery that is given to guests to use after each course. La Fondita is in La Pueblito and cost about 60 USD for two tostados, 1 bottle of water and a fanta. Spa and gym area 3/5 Wife did a massage and was nothing special though cost over 500 USD for 90 minute massage(tip and tax included) You can use the spa facilities as much as you want from 8 - 8 if you stay in a wellness suite. Also included is unlimited courses in the am . Daily classes are either 8 or 9 and normally cost 35 USD and they have yoga, water yoga, fitness, core and working out classes. They also had a free aromatherapy class once that was definitely a must. Gym is well stocked but can be a bit hot. Staff They have 5 peloton bikes and you can borrow headsets and peloton shoes and use their account to ride the bikes. After our stay we felt that Banyan Tree was a better resort overall vs Rosewood. Though the room is newer, nicer and huge the overall service, food and value for what you pay was hands down better at Banyan Tree. Pros: Wellness suite - large with no kids and in a separate area right near spa with + extra privileges for staying in Wellness suite. Newer room. Quiet. Lots of nature around room area. Cons: poor in room dining menu. Expensive food for what you get. Poor in room amenities in washroom compared to Banyan Tree. LOTS of kids in non adult only areas.

Resort and rooms are amazing and beautiful! Limited food choices on menu and very expensive meals and drinks. The butler set it is also fantastic! The wait staff at adult pool and restaurants is extremely slow. We often waited for 30 minutes for drinks at the beach / pool. (and it's not crowded at all). Restaurant service is very slow and not or poor air conditioning. After a day in the sun, some AC would be great for dinner. There are two bicycles at your door for your use or you can get a golf cart to pick you up. Beautiful resort, just sharing some concerns our friend group experienced.

My husband and I recently returned from a 3 night stay via NYC to celebrate my 40th without our children. We had an absolutely amazing time. I highly recommend this resort for a special occasion and like many other couples, in my opinion, the best way to enjoy is to leave the kids at home. It is very expensive, if you don't like spending money, don't go here. We felt the high premiums were worth it for the product. Feedback: We booked through amex and received an upgrade to a Deluxe Lagoon Suite. This room exceeded my expectations- was extremely spacious- TWO separate bathrooms(!!). You are provided with beach cruisers (bikes) to get around the large property and we loved this, but if you're not comfortable riding on a bike, you would need to rely on golf cart transportation. I understand the lure of beachfront (much more expensive), but we were perfectly happy on the lagoon. Since it was only 3 nights, we decided to do everything on property. I recommend booking airport transfer through the hotel, the airport is hectic. We loved the the events hosted on particular nights (ie the garden dinner on a Saturday and the beachside party on Sundays). I found these to be a better value bc priced per head vs. a la carte at other restaurants (such as agave azul). The events came with more personal touch and an opportunity to meet other guests- consider booking before you arrive, things reach capacity. We used the gym and spa- the gym is very nice, up to date equipment, we used treadmill, peloton bike and I took a yoga class. (The yoga class was an additional fee which was a surprise, most hotels in this category I find the classes are complimentary). The service- we LOVED the people at Rosewood Mayakoba. Please make sure to bring lots of cash for tipping because these people go above and beyond. Some highlights on our service: Chef Jonathan- we did the cooking class with Chef Jonathan (Which was more of a cooking demonstration which I didn't mind, but I would consider rebranding). He was so personable and we crossed paths with him several more times throughout stay and he was awesome. Sylvia- the host at La Ceiba. Her energy and warmth were amazing. Ascher- our server at the beach party, we loved him! Our housekeeping staff- I did not meet them but they always went above and beyond, even putting a mayakoba bookmark in my dog eared book and providing aloe vera for a sun burn. Butler Will- he was very communicative and helpful. On our last morning, we went to the beach at 7am (service begins at 8am) to soak in some extra time before our 10am car to airport, there was a gentleman working on the beach that saw us and went out of his way to set up a cabana and get us fresh towels and water. Wish I knew his name, but it was very kind/thoughtful. Our only "con" was our plunge pool was so hot it was unbearable to sit in. I finally thought to ask our Butler to lower the temperature which he was able to do, wish I had asked earlier but also wish the starting temperature wasn't so high. Its def more of a hot tub than plunge pool. The price of the airport transfer was high, but worth it (arrived with special treats, took the stress out of leaving airport) but we asked for a regular taxi on our way home (also a suburban), and it was about 1/3 the price. Three nights, for us, was the perfect amount of time. We were well fed, rested, met some great people, and had a blast. The other guests were lovely and friendly. We have stayed at Aman before where guests tend to keep to themselves/not talk but we appreciated the friendly atmosphere of Rosewood.
