Overdue review from a few months ago that I felt I needed to leave. We were looking for a warm retreat in the middle of freezing April and chose Holbox for its tropical and natural appeal. Well, we fell in love with the island and its people, but not so much with our hotel. The breakfast was barely anything, we were actually left hungry and ended up paying everyday, the restaurant overall was disappointing, and Im unsure why because we ate so well in the rest of the island, even in small little huts and food stands, the food was fantastic and rich in flavor. This is an eco hotel, but I think thats just an excuse for running things slowly and poorly.

I really loved Holbox Island. The location of Villas Defines is the best on the Island. It is located a little bit outside of town so it is quiet. The beach is out front of the hotel, with just a small road to cross, as there are really no cars on the island it is little more than a sandy road that bikes and golf carts use.
The staff at the hotel were all wonderful. Abraham at the front desk was very helpful with arranging a golf car rental, transfers and general information.
Our hotel room was a free standing bungalow. The bungalows are definitely on the rustic side. The hot water is heated by solar panels, we never had a problem with hot water. The toilets are composting, but more like a pit toilet. They are unconventional, but I appreciated they weren't using water or flushing waste into the ocean. Ours did not smell. Our room had two double beds. I really wanted a king size bed - or even a queen, but it seems the superior and oceanfront only have the two doubles. The beds were very uncomfortable - like sleeping on a box spring. I could even feel the springs!
I loved the deck with chairs, a table and two hammocks.
The biggest problems I had with the room was the swinging doors into the bathroom. They don't provide any privacy and I almost smashed my fingers in them. In the shower they had this conch shell shower head that did not work as they probably hoped. The water came out unevenly and splashed very close to the overhanging light. Get a real shower head!
The room also had air conditioning. We didn't use it because we kept the windows open and used the fans.
My last complaint is about the restaurant. It is a small enclosed space with mediocre food at best. Some outdoor seating would have been welcome.
Overall I really like most of the things about this hotel. This is definitely not a luxury resort. But the location and the staff made up for any shortcomings.

Abraham was wonderful and heart warming. The iguanas were everywhere pretty cool. Beautiful place to be. We felt safe and secure. The breakfast that came with it was wonderful. Very nice and huge rooms. Would love to go back. Easy drive from the airport. Ferries run every half hour. Golf carts are only 15 dollars a day. Just ask the front desk they will help you in whatever you do.

Across from the most beautiful beach and a 10 minute walk to town. We loved our hammocks on our ocean front deck. The view was exceptional and we loved all the iguanas on the property. If you are looking for rustic/cabin-like accommodation, beautiful views, and R&R this is the place for you.
The staff are all friendly and very helpful. One day our fan needed fixing and it was fixed immediately.
The cabin was very clean. The air con worked. They provide drinking water for you daily.
Overall Villas Delfines was exactly what we were looking for and we had a fabulous time (even though it is a bit over priced )
There were a few things that could be improved upon:
The crying and barking dog that was tied up all day and night at the outdoor restaurant beside our cabin. We felt so sad for the dog who would start crying at day break (and wake us up) until his human came to untie him for a brief period when he looked so happy running on the beach. We have no idea why this dog is tied up all day and night. He is a pretty ineffectual guard dog if he is tied up. Also all the other dogs on the island are beautiful and look very happy because they are free to roam. We did not wish to complain incase it would put the dog in a worse situation than he is in now :(
Also there were not enough dishes, spoons or forks at breakfast. You always had to ask for something and the poor staff were always washing the dishes trying to keep up. The tables were not cleaned after people left, there were always crumbs left behind. I'd say the restaurant could be much better managed in general.
I didn't like how we were quoted the room rate in US dollars because we are Canadian and as it turns out the hotel makes up the exchange rate to Mexican Pesos and so it was more expensive for the room than we had antipated. It would be better and more honest to quote the prices in Mexican Pesos.
Lastly the mattresses need replacing. They are on their last legs.

We arrived via ferry late, approx 10.30pm. There was a night guard on shift who took us to our villa. We booked a garden view and we didn’t see how pretty it was until we woke up the next morning! Huge villa, big double bed. It’s an eco site, so a compost loo, but didn’t smell at all and was so easy and more hygienic without having to touch flush, handles etc. There is a small pool but really refreshing if you’ve been in the sun all day. Really clean. The receptionists were always really helpful! I have a dairy allergy and they wrote down how to say it in Spanish which was so helpful. They also had excellent local knowledge. The reason I’ve only given 4 stars and not 5 are that A) it was expensive. I’m aware we booked over Christmas and that’s the busiest time to have booked, but when we explored the island, we came across boutique hotels which were more luxury for the same price, that we didn’t originally see online. And B) I was under the impression breakfast was included but you only got toast and tea/ juice for breakfast. If you wanted fruit or eggs or anything from the full menu, you had to pay and it wasn’t cheap, again, compared to the other local restaurants which are a 5-10 minute walk away.

I wished one of us had read the reviews before booking this hotel. Don't expect a luxury stay here. The whole place needs to be cleaned better. The misleading AC is in only a few rooms and when we asked for AC we were told that we have a fan! Boiling hot but nights are much worse because the humidity in off the chart and relying on a fan is crazy. Holbox is very limited and way behind Cozumel and just a couple of decent restaurants. I think we'll wait a few years before they catch up before we go back.

I know the work men and woman are good here but the hotel is very very very basic and uncomfortable. We did not pay large amounts of money but the basic needs are never given here. The big big problem is the room. Basic and poor room. The bed tempered me when I was in Army. The smell in the room and the heat without air conditioning was very bad. Next time maybe we stay in a tent and save the money for some thing else. Internet? NO Internet. One email one hour to send.

I can absolutely say that I will be returning to Holbox island, its unique and beautiful, the water is crystal clear, and i mean completely transparent and beautiful. The people everywhere that we went to were friendly, on the streets, in the restaurants, we got along very well. On the other hand, I was a bit cautious of the hotel when my partner booked it, the comments from guests seemed good enough, but the photos I wasnt so keen on. As I suspected, the hotel is very very simple, the basic necessities are covered style. Our room was basic, the breakfast included was even more basic, they have environmental conserving policies with solar panels and water heaters that we praise, but that dont deliver as we thought they would.

The breakfast was nothing as expected and it was more like a limited version of a B&B.
