Another lovely stay at our favorite resort. We're have been going since 2008 and have returned fourteen times. Needles to say we have enjoyed all four locations but now in our older years our favorite is the Akumal lounging by the infinity pool. We really enjoyed that they have moved the loud music to the main pool so it's is a more peaceful fibe. Last visit we were in one of their newly renovated rooms which are lovely. We do alot of snorkeling and can't advise people enough that you need water shoes they are not an option if you want to be safe. All the restaurants provided lovely service and the buffets serve great healthy options which I love. Be sure to enjoy a mudslide at the swing bar. 😎

Huge complex but you figure it out pretty quickly and the shuttle service makes it easy to get around when you are tired of walking. Buffets were tasty and plentiful. Also tried a couple of good a la cartes. Beach is gorgeous but bring water shoes if you want to explore the whole stretch. Good sandy areas but others are quite rocky. Akumal was great because you get access to all the other resorts. We took advantage of that with a few meals. Service was fantastic and the staff were all so helpful and friendly. Room was dated but clean and well equipped. Would go back for sure.

Just came back from a week-long vacation with friends (2 couples). I'll start with what I didn't like at all: 1) Their beach sucks! The "swimming area" within the bouys is very shallow (barely any spots waist-deep) and very rocky. So, if you even attempt to swim, you run the risk of scratching your knees or hurting your feet against the rocks (I did). 2) Once the winds and waves subsided on the last day of our vacation, I wanted to swim in the deeper areas beyond the bouys, but the lifeguard kept whistling like a madman, annoying everybody on the beach. Management needs to recognize the problem of the extremely shallow beach and move the bouys at least 30 ft into the deeper area. 3) The resort calls itself luxury, but the only decaf coffee they offer is instant. Other resorts we've visited had an amazing decaf coffee in both buffet and specialty coffee shops. 4) The rooms are outdated and do not have electric outlets by the bed (only on 1 side). The handrais on staircases were falling apart. On the positive side: 1) Food and drinks in buffet and a-la-carte restaurants were amazing! We managed to book 4 dinners at a-la-carte restaurants in 7 days. 2) The staff was super-friendly throughout the resort, beginning from the check-in, to restaurant waiters, to entertainment workers. (This obviously doesn't include whistling lifeguards!) 3) Resort grounds are green and beautiful. Every area is super clean, including the beach: on the day when the winds were the strongest and seaweed overwhelming, the workers cleaned the beach very efficiently. 4) The AC worked very well in our room, which is a major deal for us. Last summer, we went to a more upscale contemporary resort (Paradisus La Perla), and their ACs couldn't cope with the heat. In the end, we come to resorts for their beaches and swimming opportunities. This resort lags behind all others we have visited in Mexico and Caribbean in terms of quality of their beach.

Our third visit to the resort and always a great time. Was initially not given the room we requested as it wasn’t available at time of booking but the front lobby staff was extremely helpful and relocated us within a day of check in. My wife was very happy . Celebrating our recent retirements . Found that the resort could use some general sprucing up but overall , no complaints whatsoever. The staff on the resort are the nicest , most accommodating people we could have hoped for. Always there with a smile and willing to help in any way possible. We booked the al la carte dinners ahead of our stay so that helped big time . Dinner times are very scarce if you wait until you are actually on site. We were able to switch around times and locations while we there but it sure helps to have the times booked prior. The Brazilian dinner is fantastic and fills up very fast so don’t hesitate. The staff there was awesome and kudos to all. The Katok is also another must visit. We ate most of our breakfasts at Katok and had two al la carte dinners there as well. Shout outs to Ricardo, Marco , Ivonne , Tanya , Sebastian and Javier from the Katok. Great members of the staff and extremely helpful and fun. Also Luis from the Mikasa , Efrain and Gumersindo from Frutos del mar and well as Francetta , Manuel and Jose from the main buffet. All staff members deserve kudos including shuttle bus drivers , cleaning crew and poolside wait staff. Just awesome members who help to promote the resort. We found the infinity pool too much like a cruise ship where you have to scramble for lounges very early in the morning. Too crowded , so we walked three minutes to the middle Pool near the Dolce Vita and found this our go to area. Lots of shade areas to be found by the pool or on the beach. The main pool is too busy for our liking so we only spent limited time there. Wait staff around the pools are extremely fun and always available. Lunch nearby at the tikilka? ( I think that was the name ) was close by and ready. Not great but good enough. Would like to be able to order just an order of fries or a grilled sausage or hotdog there, but we made do . Nighttime entertainment was what can be expected on a resort. Not great but it’s fun. We paid for the Mexicana extravaganza at the hacienda and had a real nice time . Lots of shopping there if that’s what you want but a lot of the same stuff from shop to shop. I could continue on but my wife says to cut it out. Overall a fantastic time and we will be returning again . Fun to see all the local wildlife so happy and content. Swimming by the dock on the beach is fun and allows you to see many fish and birds. Most other beaches are not recommended for swimming but the main area is great with plenty of shade huts and lounges. See you again soon hopefully.

Excellent hotel. We've been to this complex several times before but the first time that we had stopped at Akumal. Its a first class hotel. Staff can't do enough for you, and in particular Jose (in the Tulum lobby bar), Sepereno (in the Dolce Vita), Leonardo (In the Hindu,) Alexandro (in the Kuuk) Adriana (in the Coffee Bar) and Dennis (at the Beach night) were particularly helpful. The food is excellent. Staying at Akumal enables you to visit all the other hotels on the site so you can dine wherever you like. Speciality restaurants are very popular so book as soon as you can. Probably our only complaint was that the new "loyalty system" that is based on an app on your phone, does not recognise older bookings. We have been about 6 or 7 time since 2005, but the app only seems to recognise more recent books so it doesn't reflect our loyalty.

People smoking at the beaches all over the place, cigarette butts thrown on the ground staff walking around ignoring it. It’s not a good place anymore. They need to pick up their game.

Prior to travelling I had read a lot of reviews about the Bahía Akumal and was very apprehensive about staying there. Unless you have suffered a terrible and unfortunate experience at this hotel we found this hotel more than what we could have hoped for. The room was exceptionally clean on arrival and everyday, room 5512. Yes, a little out dated but perfectly fit for purpose. Large bed, TV, bathroom with sauna bath, lovely shower, fridge with welcome drinks and topped up daily. Spacious seating area and outside balcony. A lovely surprise was a birthday banner and bubbly on arrival in the room. We are in the Yum buffet area, breakfast was exceptional with every food you could wish for. I totally agree that the labelling of food is poor and quite dangerous as I had some rice which had prawn in and I don’t like fish which spoilt the dinner, but could have been worse for people with allergies etc. All the staff are amazing, polite, happy and welcoming! The animals that you see around this resort is nice to see, we haven’t seen these creatures up close and it was nice to be able to watch them in a safe environment. We could go on endlessly - you won’t be disappointed. Shout out to Antonio in the sports bar! Asset to Akumal. Tips: don’t use the coach, arrange a private transfer via the agent as we waited for 3hrs after our luggage waiting for Manchester and Birmingham arrivals. Take the Stanley cool cups or simulate as the cups are small. The staff do t mind filling them up. Plug socket - remember American connection. Only 2 sockets so take 1 plug and an extension cable. Dollars rather than pesos.

Beautiful resort...but they haven't kept up with restaurants. Booking an a la carte dinner didn't work on the website or the app...and the guest experience agents were not able to find availability either... So it was very frustrating spending so much time trying to make a dinner reservation each day...

Just checked out after 14 nights at this wonderful hotel. The room we had 4925 was close to the main lobby, main pool and sports bar. Initially I was disappointed as it had no view, but then glad as our balcony was very private. I’m glad we were at the Akumal this gave us access to all the other hotels in this complex and all the a la cartel restaurants. We ate a la carte most nights and they were very fine dining. I’ll be honest that I didn’t enjoy all the food, but it was an exceptional standard and so much nicer for our holiday than eating in the buffets. We booked the restaurants in advance via the Bahía app. This is a must as some people found booking when they arrived an issue. We tried all the hotels here for breakfast, but the smaller restaurant by the adult infinity pool was our favourite. The choices there are more limited but it’s quiet and calmer than the huge main buffets. The infinity pool is great and adults only, but there is also a quiet pool at the far end of the Tulum hotel which is also really nice. You need beach shoes to go in the sea by the infinity pool, but the beach by the main pool is sandy and shoes not needed. The staff and service is exceptional. Rooms are spotless and bar service round the pools really good. We went to the fiesta night and the show was good, but I did not like any of the food there. My tip would be eat first. They are going to upgrade the rooms we stayed in and this will be an improvement. Things like lack of plug sockets and slightly old fashioned furniture will be addressed I’m sure. All in all this hotel is fantastic xx

I would have preferred to give a 5, to reflect our overall excellent and enjoyable holiday we had at the Akumal. The uncrowded beach. with a beach bar (Barr 66) right by us, with the sound of waves lapping the shore, was idyllic. Our sea view room, yards from the beach was ideal. The room had a damp smell, which we reported to staff, when we had a call to check if everything was OK; however, I appreciate that the cause might have been the humid temperatures. Probably, the worst bit was the smelly pillows. For us, the only downside was the food, which in the main restaurant wasn't particularly to our liking. We are however vegetarians, and the other guests we met were generally very positive about the food. We would definitely stay again, and have put in the negative points in the hope that they will be picked up by management and that they will be addressed. Overall, our experience was very good. The staff were all very professional, friendly, attentive and helpful.

A very nice Hotel, a few minor repairs around the hotel are needed, however I believe work was ongoing, staff are very friendly, and go the extra mile to please (we tipped well for good Service), very clean and grounds kept immaculate, house was excellent and mini bar was always topped up on a daily basis. Shuttle buses were available every 10-15 mins to the lobby or other pools within the Bahia Principe complex, but overall enjoyed the holiday and experience.

Location - Situated on the coast approx half way between Playa de Carmen and Tulum. 90 mins by coach from Cancun Airport. Appearance - The hotel is mid way through a refurb programme but even though we were not in a refurbished room, we were delighted with our room. It is true to say that parts of the premises could do with some TLC, but nothing to stop us having a great holiday. Pools/Grounds - The 3 pools are superb and kept very clean. The main pool is used for all the daily activities and was a little loud for us, but we loved the quiet pool and the adults only infinity pool. We had no problems getting sun beds but umbrellas were harder to bag. The grounds were kept in immaculate condition by the gardeners, and had the benefits of numerous wild animals running free. They were never an issue to guests and most ran away if you approached them. We saw pigs, numerous iguanas, all sorts of birds, coaties and our favourites the racoons. Staff Service - The service from the staff was exceptional, whoever you spoke to was friendly, helpful, and had a can do attitude. Nearly all the staff had a good command of English, and I had to laugh when one of the waitresses asked me to translate for a customer who had a strong Scottish accent. It is probably wrong to single out some individuals, as everyone was faultless, but the following were just excellent. Jessica who kept our room spotlessly clean, and our mini fridge topped up. Else and Edgar who were great at breakfast and lunch in the Akumal buffet. If you are lucky you may get one of Edgar's famous, champagne Cork mice. Jose at reception was superb in explaining all the features of the hotel and telling us how to use collectivos which saved us a lot of money, and finally Gabriel in the Alux restaurant who was very helpful and concerned for my wife when she accidentally hurt her leg. He really was superb. Food/Drinks - The drinks were fabulous, all top quality spirits, the house wines were spot on and the beer was very tasty. The food in the buffet was plentiful and varied, and the hot cooking stations were perfect.Freshly coked omletes st breakfast were superb. If you are staying at the Akumal you get access to all the restaurants, including all the Al Cartes at all the other 3 Bahia hotels in the complex. A choice of over 25 restaurants. The A la Carte restaurants were at another level, everyone will have their favourites, but our were Alux, Le Gourmet, Kuuk, and Katok. It is very important to book in, on line before you arrive. This then allows you to book the A la Carte restaurants, if you wait until you arrive at the hotel, then you will probably be disappointed as the A la Carte restaurants fill up very quickly. I suggest booking for every night you will be staying as they can always be cancelled when you arrive, if you decide to go out for the day. Bedroom - Our room was huge, as was the bed. Some reviewers have said the beds were hard, but we did not find that to be the case, and if you do find it hard, mattress toppers are available at reception. There was plenty of storage space, good sized colour TV with lots of movie and news channels in English. Every room has free wifi, free safe, umbrella, slippers, dressing gowns and an iron and board. Bathroom - Good sized bathroom with toilet, sink and shower. Plenty of hot water and good pressure in the shower. Toiletries in dispensers are on display, but if anyone is fussy do bring your own. Beach - Akumal has the best beach it is long and has beautiful white sand. Part of its rocky and not really set for swimming, but the area by the pontoon is great for swimming and there are plenty of fish to be seen. The sea floor is a bit rocky in places so do bring swim shoes. Spa - I was told the massages were very good by other guests, but we did not use it as we thought it was a tad expensive. Entertainment - The hotel puts on a full day time entertainment programme but there is no pressure to take part. The evening entertainment is mixed, as usual in all inclusive hotels, some good some not so good. The two biggest evening events are subject to a modest surcharge which is disappointing for an all inclusive hotel. WiFi - Free and works well throughout the resort. Trips - We took the collectivo to Akumal beach to swim with the turtles, and also to Tulum. The hotel wanted $90 pp Us to go to Tullum. By taking the bus we did it for $21 Us. Hotel response - We contacted the hotel 2 weeks before we arrived and did receive a response within 48 hours confirming they would give us a quiet room as requested. Superb service.

Beware, if you are a black level member and you check into the Coba you will get no room upgrade nor room choice which are part of the black level benefits. Coba rooms are very dated. Black wrist bands are provided that provide access to the other sections but beyond that no recognition for level of loyalty. The Coba was overbooked and moving guests free of charge to Akumal, Tulum, yet wanted to charge us between $1200 and $3000 usd to move us to another section as we stayed at the Coba for 3 weeks. This should have been provided as part of our top level loyalty status. We stayed 28 days, they did move us to the Akumal for the last 7 days N/C, too little too late. Something as simple as moving us to a Akumal base room from the start would have resolved all our issues and made for a much more pleasant stay. The only two guest service reps that had any interest in helping out were Mariana and Carolina at the Akumal. Even an email to Bahia head office garnered no response. A kitchen staff member was helpful in providing a bag of rice to dry out a phone. We stayed a total of 9 weeks at a Bahia since December 1st 2024, 2 at Runaway Bay Jamaica, 3 at the Esmeralda Punta Cana and 4 here. The other two locations by far valued there guests much higher and for us will be the locations we will return to.

We have been going to regularly to the Bahia Principe Bahia Luxury Akumal for over 10 years and nothing has changed in the rooms in all that time. The rooms are very tatty, and a lot was faulty, or just not working at all. We had to get maintenance out...

We have been going to regularly to the Bahia Principe Bahia Luxury Akumal for over 10 years and nothing has changed in the rooms in all that time. The rooms are very tatty, and a lot was faulty, or just not working at all. We had to get maintenance out to our Junior Suite in block 7000 5 times during our stay. We have noticed the Bahia has cut the staffing levels to an almost critical level. This means everything takes longer to be done. The remaining staff are wonderful, and do their absolute upmost, however they cannot perform miracles! Maintenance took time to arrive, resulting in us being stuck in our room for several hours waiting each time the safe didn’t work or the telephone or the shower etc ☹ The rooms are very slowly being updated, but they said that when we went 2 years ago, If you want a room that works, and isn’t run down they call that an ‘upgrade’ and charge £100’s extra per week. The App The Bahia is aware that the App doesn’t work for us well in the UK ☹ If you book with Tui we are not given the Bahia booking reference for starters, so we are unable to use their app. This is a major problem when booking in online and booking restaurants. If you email guestservicebpaku@bahia-principe.com and ask for your Bahia booking reference using your Tui reference number, and the lead name, 2 weeks before you go they will give you the reference number. The Bahia app also requires you to select Reino Unido for the UK. The United Kingdom or Britain does not come up in their pick list. Food The buffet is always good, and we have never had a problem finding really good food, with lots of choice and it is always fresh and plentiful. Service in the restaurant can be very slow, with only one waiter covering a large area. That said the food is OUTSTANDING. If anything, better than ever before. It is worth taking the time to get some restaurant bookings because you won’t be disappointed when you get there. Do expect for the process of booking to be labour intensive and very frustrating. General upkeep The gardens are now mostly rather basic, and a cheery wave received from a gang of happy gardeners is now just one man racing to stay on top of the weeds with a hoe. The laundry facility is overly complicated. Firstly, you have to call for a laundry bag and then call the concierge service again for collection. You will most likely get your laundry back the same day though, and it is reasonably priced – one of the few things unchanged. The sand on the beach is very patchy now and more like gravel in a few places. Where the maintenance crew used to scrap the stones and coral effectively into channels, allowing us easy access to the sea, this no longer happens effectively. Beach shoes are now recommended if you don't want to cut your feet. They do their very best with the weed. Our summary From our experience we felt the staff are over worked, the bedroom facilities are run down and it is no longer the slick 5* experience we have always known and loved over the years. It is with a sad heart that we say we won’t return until there is news of some real investment into the Bahia Principe Bahia Luxury Akumal ☹ On a positive note though we thought the food was the best ever delivered across all the restaurants and the buffet. We have given 4 stars because to be honest if you haven't been here before, you are a foodie that appreciates good food hygiene, and had nothing to compare this hotel to in Mexico you would most likely rate it at at least 4 stars yourself.

While the resort itself is beautiful, our stay was extremely disappointing. The guest services and customer service teams seemed disinterested in addressing concerns or providing assistance, which made the stay much more stressful than it should have been. Additionally, the rooms were outdated and in poor condition. My wife and I encountered sewer flies all over the room, which was incredibly unpleasant. The bed was also very creaky and uncomfortable, making it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. To make matters worse, we saw raccoons in the snack bar buffet area, climbing near the food. It looked very unsanitary and honestly freaked us out. For a luxury resort, the service and room quality were far below expectations. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this property.

I’m writing to share the disappointing experience my husband and I had during our recent stay at Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal in March 2025. Unfortunately, the trip did not meet the standards we expected from a resort with such a strong reputation. This vacation was meant to be a special celebration for my 30th birthday, but it fell far short of expectations. Despite noting the occasion in our reservation, not a single staff member acknowledged it. When I spoke with the Guest Experience team, I was told we would need to pay extra for a birthday song and a personalized dessert plate, something I found both unprofessional and disheartening. The condition of our Jr. Suite Superior room was unacceptable. A strong sewer odor was coming from the vent, there were sewer flies throughout the space, and the curtains were stained, making the room feel dirty and poorly maintained. I’ve attached photos of this. Adding to our disappointment, my husband became ill with food poisoning. When I contacted Guest Services for help, I was simply told to order room service. No meaningful support or care was offered, and I was even advised to purchase medicine for him from the resort shop, for $13. We’ve stayed at several all-inclusive resorts in the past, and sadly, this was by far our most disappointing experience.

This hotel was beyond our expectations. Being part of several resorts together, the ease and flow in visiting other pools, beaches, bars, etc. was awesome! We stayed at Luxury and snorkelling was available right off the pier. Rooms and facilities were extremely clean, staff was friendly, food at buffet was amazing. A la cartes were several steps above and beyond! The grounds were so beautifully kept and natural and lots of wildlife around. Entertainment was best we have ever seen and lots of it. Loved loved loved it - would love to plan a trip back. Beach itself wasn’t large and pristine white sand but trade-off is that they are environmentally friendly, protecting nesting sea turtles and there were lots of birds to see in early morning. If you are looking for long stretches of empty sandy beach, you may be disappointed. Some places had sea weed and there was a low rock wall along part of the beach, separating the sand and access to water, but those areas were really rocky so probably wouldn’t swim anyways. Overall we give this a 10/10!!!

The pools are clean and well maintained. You want great food? 5th time there and the food just gets even better. The buffets are now even rivaling the superb a la carte restaurants! The room was perfect and always clean and comfortable. Zero complaints. I personally recommend this resort. It is a magnificent place where great people, great food and great location can be found together in one memorable place. My husband and I stayed at Akumal for 10 days in December 2024. We had not been to Bahia Principe since 2016, so we were excited to return. I want to start by saying that the reservation process directly through Bahia Principe is excellent!! Due to health issues, I had to reschedule 4 times – each time the BP rep was helpful and courteous, and I had no problems making the changes. On arrival, we were assisted by Francisco Cubo in reception- he was exceptional!!! I cannot say enough good things about how he treated us. From the start of our vacation, during, and when we departed, he checked in on us to insure everything was perfect. Thank you Francisco!! Zuriel in reception was also very helpful with information about the resort and amenities. Ricardo in guest services was super nice and helpful – he helped with scheduling our romantic dinner. The alacarte dinners were superb! We loved that each one had a specialty drink and “chef appetizer”. All were very good, but our favorites were Katok, Doce Vita, Portofino, Frutos del Mar, and Mikado. Special shout out to Johvanni at Dolce Vida and Joseline at Frutos del Mar for their excellent service!! I highly recommend booking directly with BP so you can make your dinner reservations before you arrive. The buffet in Akumal section is excellent, with a large variety of food options. During our stay, we had BP staff check regularly on our experience while at the restaurants, pool and beach area. It was evident that they are actively checking on their customer service practices throughout the resort. As in most resorts, we did wake up early to secure a spot at the beach or pool area. It was the busy season, so spots did fill up quickly. We enjoyed swimming in the ocean- it’s very calm due to the breakers, but nice to enjoy a calm swim and see the fish. The pools are very nice but not heated, so very chilly in December. The bar service at the beach and pool was great – thanks to Luna at the pool and Adriana at the beach for always keeping the drinks flowing!! The bartenders always helped with choosing drinks, Jesus and Gabriel at the pool and beach bar and Raul in the lobby bar were all wonderful!! The entertainment staff were all great and lots of fun with the leadership of Cesar. The pool activities were always entertaining and I especially enjoyed the Zumba on the beach with Hannia. The evening entertainment was very good- something for everyone to enjoy. We paid extra for one of the night shows which was very nice in Tulum. The Hacienda is nice to visit, and on this trip we did not go to the Casino. In general, getting around the resort is easy with the transport carts coming around frequently – during peak times, patience is the key!

What an incredible trip! This has definitely been one of the best holidays we’ve ever had. I’ll break down my review into sections, as there’s a lot to cover. Rooms – We stayed in one of the newly renovated swim-up rooms, and it was excellent. The room was spotless, spacious, and well-maintained. The minibar was regularly restocked, especially when we were running low on essentials like water and Pepsi. We did encounter a couple of cockroaches during our stay, but given that we were on the ground floor in the middle of the jungle, it was understandable. It didn’t bother us or affect our overall experience—it’s just one of those things that can happen in such a natural setting. Entertainment – We arrived on April 25th, and the resort was extremely quiet. There was no music around the infinity pools, beach bar, or other common areas—only at the main pool. Honestly, listening to a full Alicia Keys concert set on repeat just wasn’t the vibe we were looking for. If you’re after a calm, relaxed atmosphere, it’s ideal, but for us, the lack of lively music was a letdown. We ended up spending most of our days and evenings at the Tulum hotel, where the entertainment team was far more energetic and the music was much better! The Origin show is definitely worth the money—the dancers and acrobatics were absolutely incredible! I joined the hotel’s Facebook group before our trip, and I’m so glad I did! I wouldn’t have known about checking in via the app or the need to book restaurants in advance otherwise. Thankfully, we managed to secure reservations at eight different restaurants for our 14 night stay. Dolce Vita This was hands-down our favorite—we went twice because the food was just that good. The welcome drink, an Amaretto Sour with a cinnamon stick, was a lovely and memorable touch. We had the calamari, spaghetti Bolognese, lasagne, and finished with the chocolate cake for dessert. Everything was absolutely delicious! The staff were attentive and hardworking—top-notch service all around. Katok This one was a bit of a letdown, especially after reading so many glowing reviews. The food itself was tasty—especially the brisket tacos—but the service really missed the mark. It was overcrowded with too few staff, and we waited over 45 minutes for our starters. We also weren’t offered a welcome drink, which felt disappointing. Sadly, not a great experience overall. Portofino We were told this restaurant had recently reopened post-COVID, and it was a 10/10 experience. The service was excellent—special mention to Cristian! The food was incredible: fluffy, well-seasoned pizza and a rich, flavorful carbonara. Highly recommend this one! Thali We first discovered Thali at the Bahía Príncipe in Punta Cana in 2024 and absolutely loved it. While this location offered a slightly different experience (as expected), it was still very good. Service was a little slow, but the food was enjoyable and the ambiance lovely. Alux Another standout! The staff went above and beyond, and the food was excellent. The chocolate pudding for dessert was unbelievably good—definitely a must-try. Tequila One of our favorites! We were lucky to catch the live band during our meal, and the female singer had an unforgettable voice—absolutely mesmerizing. The food was great, with lots of options and really friendly staff. A fantastic experience all around. Gran Tortuga We had low expectations due to a disappointing experience at a similar spot in Punta Cana, but this one exceeded them by far! The service was outstanding—servers came around with meats every few minutes, which was a huge improvement from our last visit. The cinnamon pineapple was a delightful surprise, and the buffet-style sides (especially the potato salad) offered great variety. YUM Buffet Compared to the buffet at Ambar in Punta Cana, this one felt like a bit of a downgrade. The food selection was decent, but the pizza was often too hard and the dessert options quite limited. A few more dessert choices would’ve made a big difference. Sian Ka’an Buffet This buffet was amazing—much better than YUM! It had a wide range of choices and a significantly larger dessert selection. Definitely the superior option. Katok Buffet (Breakfast & Lunch) A great spot for meals, especially since it’s adults-only. The food selection was solid, and I especially loved the poached eggs every morning. A relaxing and satisfying place to start the day. Also, we loved that they gave you hand sanitizer as you walk in. As someone who gets a little funny over buffets it made the experience feel a lot cleaner. Sports Bar – I’m not sure if it was due to the ongoing renovations, but the bar closed earlier than expected every night. In contrast, the one at Ambar stayed open until 2 a.m., which was great. Once the bar shut, there weren’t many other spots to just sit, relax, and chat with friends. The Hacienda is an option, but getting there requires taking a trolley—and depending on the time, you might be waiting 10–15 minutes for one. Trolleys – The trolley system is a great idea in theory, especially for a resort of this size. Unfortunately, there just weren’t enough of them running—particularly during peak times like dinner. We often had to leave our room an hour early just to make it to our dinner reservations on time. Again, maybe this was due to the renovations, but if the hotel were at full capacity, I don’t think getting a trolley would be realistic at all. Gym- We absolutely loved the gym! It featured brand-new equipment, refreshing cold towels, and fruit-infused water. The space was incredibly spacious, and we enjoyed starting our mornings here. The hotel is stunning, but I feel Tulum has a slight advantage in terms of appearance, thanks to its recent renovations. Overall – Despite those small inconveniences, we had an absolutely incredible holiday. The staff were fantastic, the weather was perfect with not a single drop of rain, and a special shoutout to the bell boys who helped us arrange taxis to Tulum city—highly recommend checking out the beach clubs there, they’re next level!

My husband whisked me away for a quick trip over my birthday. We have stayed at Grand Bahia before on a different resort. We chose Akumal for this stay and had a beautifully renovated junior suite. The service was outstanding, food was delicious with many options for a la cartes too. We walked over to Coba because we love that side of the resort and wanted to see if there were any changes from our last visit. In the lobby, we met Carlos, he was so kind, friendly and knowledgeable about the resort. He treated us to a privilege tour and made us remember all the reason we love coming there. We hope to see him again on our next visit to Grand Bahia!!

The Akumal and the whole complex was great for a 2 week holiday. The rooms were a bit dated, and certainly looked nicer at the other hotels. Bit they were a decent size, clean and fully equipped. We spent all our time at the beach, mostly near the Adult only section and loved Bar 66 on the beach. A great place to sit and enjoy a couple of ice cold cans of Dos Equis or a cocktail. Call out to Maria who kept us stocked up! It got a bit windy but better than up by the pools which were boiling. As said by many others, book the a la cartes in advance on the app, this could be between 7 and 10 days in advance.

want to start by saying i have been going to this resort for over 20 years, my wife and I love it overall but after this last trip there are a couple of challenges happening right now. first the service as always was outstanding, hats off to Mariso and Fanny at the Bar 66 beach bar... they are awesome. all food at the Buffet was good especially Friday when it steak and lobster night. again overall the resort is great and we will be back in October... BUT..... two things to know especially if you are heading there soon. 1- they are completely renovating Villas 47 - i think 53 in Akumal. these villas are completely closed with black walls completely walling them off, the problem is that the black walls complete shut down all the roads between the villas that you use to access the resort. we had a hell of a time walking to Mikado which should be about a 10 min walk from Akumal all the roads were block off with the black walls... took us almost half an hour to get there. i would suggest the front desk to give guests a map of the resort showing what roads are open and closed so you can get around accordingly. overall this is a good thing as these villas have needed refurbishing for some time now so im excited to see them when they are done. 2- and this is the biggest one, we had such a hard time booking Al-a carte dinners 10 days in advance.. hell have not been able to eat at grand Tortuga but once in the last 7 visits. what i learned this trip is the Al-a-carte restaurants are NOT open 7 days a week.. Katok was closed for dinner 3 of the 7 nights we were there and so was every other restaurant we saw. STILL when we did go to Katok for our reservation it showed on the app completely sold out but i counted 17 empty tables. 17 !!! when we left the place was still only about half full... this Al-a-carte system is broke and seriously needs to be fixed. i can only assume they are closing down different Al-a-Cartes due to so many villas being shut down for refurbishing but when you do go and its not even close to being full but the app says it is that is a problem. its been a problem for the last couple of years. STILL, i love this place and we will continue to come back twice a year. PS- seemed like they are also updating villas in COBA as well but i didn't get any villa numbers.

My husband and I chose a Mayan wedding at Bahia Principe in Akumal for our destination wedding, aiming for a memorable experience with our closest friends. Akumal was the perfect location, and we also wanted to visit Chichen Itza. We were looking for an affordable, all-inclusive resort that could accommodate our wedding and our guests while keeping within budget. The Resort & Staff: The resort itself was beautiful and well-laid-out, and the staff were exceptional. They made us feel right at home and treated us with the utmost respect. By the second day, they even remembered our names! The hospitality was certainly a highlight. The Food: There were several cuisine options, though making reservations for larger groups was difficult, so we didn’t get to try as many places. The portions were small, especially for my husband, who often left still hungry. That said, the food was tasty, and the drinks were always flowing. Room service was a huge plus, especially for late-night snacks after dinner. The Wedding: This part of the experience was a bit more challenging. We booked 7 rooms, but didn’t receive any special recognition for our wedding—no discount, no upgrade, not even a simple welcome gesture. It felt like the resort overlooked the significance of our special event, especially when we saw "Happy Birthday" or “Happy Anniversary” banners on other rooms. My wedding was not acknowledged in the way I had hoped. I had some back-and-forth with the group team before arriving in Mexico, but once I got in touch with Nekane, she was wonderful and kept communication open. However, the event planning process was incredibly slow. I started months in advance, but responses took 6-8 weeks, and I was switched between wedding coordinators multiple times—ultimately, it was a week before our wedding when we had our final coordinator, Alx. Thankfully, Alx was fantastic, managing to pull everything together last-minute with patience and professionalism. We had paid for a cocktail hour, a 3-hour reception, and other add-ons, but things didn’t go as planned. The reception was rained out for over an hour, and there was no compensation for the inconvenience. The lights we paid for didn’t work, and my “LOVE” sign couldn’t be set up. The cocktail hour with an open bar was not fully honored, and no refunds or adjustments were made despite these issues. The event was also shut down exactly at the scheduled time, which was frustrating. The hors d’oeuvres were served with dinner, which felt like a missed opportunity for a proper reception vibe. We also encountered some issues with the guests being able to access our private area, as there were no clear signs indicating it was reserved for our event. This created a bit of tension, as some guests were upset when they were told to leave. Wedding Packages & Pricing: While the resort's wedding packages seemed appealing, the poor communication and delays led us to book our ceremony outside the resort, which ended up costing more. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any of the included perks that came with the packages—things like free breakfasts, a couple’s massage, or a stay at a sister resort. I was told those weren’t available to us, which added to the disappointment. What Went Right: Despite the challenges, there were a few standout experiences. JJ Studios, including Ivonne at the front desk, Emilio the videographer, and Nicolas flying the drone, went above and beyond. They were so understanding of our delays and worked tirelessly to ensure we had beautiful memories captured on film. The video turned out amazing, and I wholeheartedly recommend their services. They even left the resort to film our ceremony, so feel free to ask about off-site filming. Final Thoughts: Overall, my wedding wasn’t the dream I had hoped for, primarily due to Bahia Principe's lack of attention to special events. The team on the ground, especially Alx, JJ Studios, and the reception staff, were wonderful, but the corporate-level service and communication were sorely lacking. If you're planning a wedding, I recommend looking elsewhere, though if you're just coming for a vacation, the resort might be a better fit. If you stay here, be sure to use the app to book your restaurant reservations immediately.

My partner and I have just returned from a two week stay at Akumal. Having stayed in a Bahía Príncipe Hotel elsewhere, we had big expectations. The hotel itself is beautiful, we stayed in the adults only section (however we didn’t request this area on booking but were more than happy with the allocation!) The room was clean, a good size and had everything you needed, however very dated. Building work was happening when we were there but didn’t really affect us, other than a bit of noise throughout the day. We were able to book restaurants across the other hotels, although quite tricky to get booked in - we booked all on the app before we arrived - the only bad experience and wouldn’t advise booking is the Mexican restaurant - tequila - it’s a buffet style restaurant and you can get similar on the hotel buffet every night. Our favourite meals were at Katok (steak restaurant @ akumal) and Maiko (Japenese @ Sian Khan) - amazing!! One thing I would say about the service in all the restaurants and buffet as well as the bars - it definitely isn’t 5 star service! There was no urgency to great guests or even acknowledge them, take orders, very little service with a smile, you’ll get served, eventually! The entertainment team as well as concierge, bell boys, trolley drivers and the guest services staff however were brilliant. A special mention to Maria and Adriana, pool servers, they were absolutely brilliant, couldn’t do anymore for us, always chatty and smiling. There was a fire at the sister hotel, Coba during our stay. We are very aware this couldn’t be helped but it meant coba guests could then use our hotel and facilities, which changed the feel of the hotel completely! With akumal being a luxury hotel, we paid more than the other hotels for our holiday, yet coba guests who had paid less then got to use our hotel which then made the queues for the buffet ridiculously long, the hotel and pool very busy and completely different clientele than before the fire. When speaking to coba guests they mentioned their pool was still open and an unaffected area had been made into a buffet restaurant so I’m unsure why our hotel was then inundated with coba guests. A shame really as it changed our holiday completely after that.

Our five-night stay at Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal in May 2025 provided a welcome opportunity for relaxation. We were pleasantly surprised by the efficiency of Cancun airport, navigating customs and baggage claim in under 20 minutes. Destino Riviera's private shuttle service was a standout. Jaime's excellent communication from booking to our return, coupled with a welcoming driver and cold beverages, made for a smooth transfer. The 70-minute drive was comfortable, though the early departure time for our airport transfer was a slight inconvenience. Airport security was also quick. The online check-in process, completed ten days prior, streamlined our arrival at the resort. We were greeted with refreshing champagne and a cold towel, and our requested Junior Suite Ocean View Superior in Villa 66 (first floor, oceanfront, near the adults-only pool) was ready. The trolley ride to our room offered a glimpse of local wildlife, which was a nice touch. Our room was well-maintained by housekeeping, and the consistently stocked mini-bar was appreciated. Bringing our Roku allowed for easy TV viewing. One of the major advantages of this resort is access to the restaurants across all four Bahia properties. While this offers great variety, the dinner reservation system via the app was a point of frustration. Despite early attempts, many restaurants were fully booked, leaving us with later dining times and not our first option for dinner. However, we did enjoy our meals at Thali, Tequila, Maiko, La Gran Tortuga, and Frutos Del Mar (the latter two being our favorites for food and service). Welcome drinks were a nice touch at select restaurants. Tequila's buffet format was unexpected given the reservation requirement. The Coffee Shop was a daily highlight, thanks to the friendly staff and excellent coffee options. Breakfast at the main buffet was satisfactory, contrasting with a less impressive experience at the adults-only Katok, which seemed to be winding down. Lunch options were adequate, with the main buffet offering a good selection. The snack bar also provided variety, with both buffet and made-to-order choices. Navigating the expansive resort was made easy by the frequent golf cart trolleys. While designated meeting points exist, drivers were generally proactive in offering rides. The beach was a major draw, perfect for long walks. While some areas experienced sargassum with an odor, it wasn't overwhelming. We enjoyed swimming and snorkeling, and the adults-only pool provided a quieter alternative, though we preferred the ocean. Our couples massage was a relaxing experience, though we felt somewhat rushed at the end. The gym offered a good range of equipment. Our off-resort snorkeling excursion with Friendly Turtle Paradise to Akumal Bay was a highlight, providing an amazing opportunity to see turtles in their natural habitat for a reasonable price. Check-out was efficient and hassle-free. Overall, Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal offers a wide range of amenities and experiences, though the dinner reservation system could be improved.

Booked 14 nights over Christmas and New Year. Very disappointed and certainly not luxury as advertised. So much so did 7 nights and booked flight back. Staff were lovely, can't fault them. Rooms are a bit dated but that didn't bother me as we only sleep there. Food was 70% fish, which I don't eat and the rest was around 20% mecican and the rest was pasta, soup and pizza. Fruit was mainly melon and mango. Drinks were dreadful both beer and wines, ended up buying a bottle of wine. Pools were freezing and pool bar spent most of the time closed off. So after a week of living off soup and pasta bd drinking p***s came back home. Only booked this resort as thought the food and drinks would be on par with the Bahia Fantasa in Tenerife which is 100% better.

This resort never disappoints. The staff are very friendly and the customer service is top notch. The maid Guadalupe, and massage therapist Aldaberta were both amazing! We return year after year! Food and drinks are always awesome. The spa and golf are also excellent!

Fantastic holiday experience from Start to finish, staff, food, day and night entertainment all top class, nothing is ever a problem to staff they are so polite and helpful. The rooms and all areas are fab and scenery is fantastic as are pools and beaches.

Other guests would "claim" pool chairs with shade at like 6 in the morning and then they would leave for hours, depriving other pool users (like us) of much-needed shade. Shamefully selfish of these people and we were disappointed that the resort does nothing about it.

I'd like to send a good service notice to Miguel with massage, Santos with photos. I had a bad experience with a lady Monserhat who was bothered by our choice of seating in the buffet when it was not busy Very poor an inattentive service in buffet in general but she took thr cake for the most unhelpful. I'd come back despite the flaws and rate my experience as a 7/10.

My wife and I stayed at Bahía Príncipe Akumal for 5 days for our 10 year wedding anniversary, we had a great time and experience! The food was great and the staff was very friendly especially Carolina in the adults only vilas, Carolina helped us with any needs we had including setting up a la carte dinner reservations and helping us pick out the best lunch spots! I recommend if you are having troubles with getting reservations on the app, ask one of the friendly staff members to help you get a reservation! Our room was in the adults only section but we used “the quiet pool” in the middle area which has a bar very close by and the staff there was also amazing especially Antonio! We could not believe how expansive this resort was especially considering you can use any of the adjoining resorts with an easy trolley ride any time of day! Thank you for making our trip a fun and memorable experience!
