Pulling off the perfect buddymoon is something of an art. And thanks to the buddymoon of Jennifer Aniston and then-hubby Justin Theroux took with their pals Jason Bateman, Courtney Cox, and Chelsea Handler, the trend is now more popular than ever. Here are some tips to make sure yours is a hit!
Make Sure It's Affordable for Everyone
One of the most important aspects of buddymoon planning is making sure it's affordable for everyone involved. If one person doesn't make much money, but you also want to include your friend who inherited the family diamond business, the buddymoon should be fun for both -- without making either of them go broke. Choose affordable destinations and accommodations that you know won't break the bank for anyone, and book fun activities that you know everyone would equally enjoy. Play to your friends' personalities to find the perfect activities to fill each day, and no one will go home disappointed -- or penniless.
Focus on Fun - With Alone Time for Romance
Buddymoons are all about maximizing the fun with friends, while still getting plenty of alone time for those romantic moments you want with your new groom or bride. Alone time is key. You want fun activities that everyone enjoys, but you also want to give others in the group -- especially other couples -- time to romance and explore on their own. Experts suggest spending around 60 percent time as a group, 40 percent time alone. That gives you opportunities to get plenty of romance while your friends have fun of their own!
Buddymoon Etiquette: You Plan. They Pay
When it comes to buddymoon etiquette, you should do all the planning, but you aren't expected to pay for the lodging, flights or activities. Give your friends all the booking and pricing info and allow them to book and pay on their own, allowing reasonable advance notice for everyone to get booked. This is where affordability is so important -- you don't want your friends to balk at the price, so make sure you have budget conversations before you or anyone in the group commits to anything!
Consider a Vacation Rental
Always dream about vacationing in a lavish villa or New England-style beachfront mansion? With a buddymoon, the cost is split between everyone, so you might be able to finally afford it! It also makes things less complicated, putting everyone's lodging under a single booking. With the opportunity to up your luxury levels while decreasing the budget, vacation rentals are practically tailor-made for buddymoons. Just make sure your friends know that, as the newlyweds, you and your other half get dibs on the master bedroom!
Buddymoon Planning: Make a Venn Diagram of Interests & Activities
When it comes to buddymoon planning, the destination is the bread, and the activities are the butter. To figure out a destination, have everyone contribute three ideas for scenery and style. If needed, provide the selections for them to choose from that includes buddymoon style and another set of selections for parts of the world. For example, for the destinations, you could provide choices like USA East Coast, USA West Coast, Europe, South America, Africa, etc. Then offer styles like relaxed, historical, outdoorsy, adventurous, beachy, urban, nightlife, etc.
Then you can have eveyone choose their top 4 activities and scenery types from selections like beach, jungle, city, mountain, snowy, tropical, etc. Then include activities like shopping, biking, hiking, city tours, museums, temples, cathedrals, skiing, wineries, etc. Once everyone chooses their top picks, compare and contrast to see where there's overlap. This gives you a strong foundation to start the planning. Group emails and group texts are helpful for double-checking on the final choices!
Consider Something More Local
International buddymoons are a blast...but keeping in line with buddymoon rule #1 (make sure everyone you invite can afford it), you might spend less and even have more fun with a local-ish buddymoon. Even if it means loading up into the car for a five hour drive, that can save a lot of money even compared to a domestic flight (and is more environmentally-friendly to boot). More friends, lower cost, and less stress means more fun! Of course, if all of you can afford the Tuscan villa for a week, go for it. Otherwise, consider options in the surrounding area like a nearby big city, renting cabins in that National Park in the neighboring state, or a car trip to the coast.
Consider a Buddymoon Cruise
There are two main great buddymoon-friendly things about cruises: one, they're affordable when you're going as a group. Two, they make everything super easy to plan and put all the fun and activities right at your fingertips. You also get stunning scenery that changes each morning, and the opportunity to potentially visit all kinds of dazzling, fun, and romantic locations all along the way. They let you plan less and do more, which is a blessing when you've already planned an entire wedding.
