We have been coming to The Bay Hotel now for over 8 years, so it has a special place in our hearts BUT we felt this time compelled to write to say that despite its v.high prices this is not a 5 star hotel anymore. The rooms including bathrooms have become shabby with showers and toilets temperamental, water in room not replenished, phone to reception not functioning so any requests face to face at reception, and the main pool out of action of one of the busiest weekends in the Cape Town Summer period for which our complaints at reception weren’t addressed and we had to get our Travel Agent back in the UK involved. A credit Note was applied to the room but it took 72 hours for the maintenance team to finally get involved. The main issue remains as follows: for over £800 per night we became frustrated that guests from the neighbouring hotels (Camps Bay Retreat- qtr of the price, Stone Cottages-10th of the price) have full access to breakfast and all the pool /dining facilities. Breakfast on several occasions was overly- busy and we found ourselves asking why are we paying a premium for this! Sorry to write this, as we have some very fond memories of a fantastic property that has so much potential. Our loyalty had no impact at all during the stay!

Terrible service and the rooms come with 6am-10pm Padel noise and disturbance

We had booked this 5 star hotel for 4 nights at the end of a holiday in Cape Town. What a disappointment. The hotel can best be described as all front and no substance with poor service and staff with poor attitudes and a couldn’t care less demeanor. With the exception of the always helpful security team.
Our ‘Mountain View’ room looked into the air conditioning, a green tin roof and noisy Padel and tennis courts in use from 6am until 10pm, lovely watching half dressed sweaty people grunting and shouting from our minuscule balcony. We complained, twice but were basically told that it was hard luck and also that Padel did not start until 9am. Being lied to and given a poor room and then being treated to a couldn’t care less attitude? Hardly 5 star.
Breakfast quality was the worst out of all the hotels we stayed in as well as the poorest service. When I asked for second pot of tea it was as though I was asked for a bottle of champagne and twice the staff member shook the pot to ensure it really was empty which was unbelievable! Hard croissants and poor quality sausages, bacon and eggs were in evidence daily.
We tried the bar once. When asking for a red wine they seemed surprised and even more so when asked what they had that was non alcoholic- Heineken 0 was the answer- when asked if there was anything else a rude no was the reply. Surely a decent barman could have a few mocktails to offer- every other hotel did. Except ‘’The Bay’.
Service with a sneer.
And don’t expect to be offered drinks when sitting by the pool- we were ignored for about 4 hours. A joke.
We won’t be returning and suggest you think twice unless all you are after are Instagram photos.

The hotel is very run down. You can tell it was probably quite lovely around 10 years ago, but it needs updating. Our bed was extremely hard. They did put a cover on it to help make it comfier. The seats outside on the balcony and the sofa in the room were both extremely uncomfortable. The mini bar is also very poor with just water and perhaps 1 or 2 soft drinks. The cupboards etc were old and didn't open properly. We also had to ring for new towels, as they took them but didn't replace them. Additionally, the room service took for ever, and even by 2pm the following day they had left our leftover food still in the room - causing it to smell.
The food in the hotel was nice enough, and there are a fair number of sunbeds, which are comfortable, and the pool area was nice. It is a good location for getting around Camps Bay/seeing other parts of Cape Town.

The Bay Hotel was recommended to us by a friend. The view - sea and mountain was spectacular. Great location with plenty of restaurants in the area for dinner or lunch. The room was lovely and comfortable except for what we think was a blocked drainage smell, even the lift had this awful smell. We reported this and was told they would look into it and maybe move us. Nothing was sadly done. Staff were very friendly, but breakfast was slow, waiting a long time to just get a coffee or order food.

Great location in Camps Bay, right across the street from the beach and beautiful sunsets. Hotel was clean, rooms were good size, very helpful staff. Included hot breakfast, which was nice. Fun little bar on the second floor, with a warm fire on some chilly spring nights. We had just flown in from US after 15 hour flight, and stayed here to regroup before heading to Kruger area for safari. While note right downtown Cape Town, it was Easy access to sightseeing, table mountain, etc.

The restaurant food was excellent and very reasonable. We also really enjoyed Caamil’s Bar where Tinashe was an excellent host.
Breakfast was also really good with a wide-ranging buffet and a menu for cooked items was also available.
Wouldn’t hesitate to return

My wife and I had booked to stay at the Bay Hotel in March 2025, but unfortunately, our plans changed and we were unable to go ahead with the stay.
The reason for this 1-star review is that we have yet to receive a refund for our deposit. We submitted our refund request well within the timeframe outlined in the hotel's terms and conditions. At the time, we were told the refund would be processed within 7–14 working days.
However, it has now been six weeks, and we have not received any payment. Additionally, the hotel has not responded to our follow-up messages for the past two weeks.
This lack of communication and delay in processing our refund has been extremely disappointing.
