Terrible reservation department, i made a reservation for sept for 5 nights and tried to drop the first two nights. The online agent told me she modified the reservation but never sent a confirmation or told me that the rate would go up over $250 /night. After i again asked for a confirmation she sent one that had the dates but no rate. When i called the reservations the woman said tough luck- if you change the dates the rate changes but the online agent never mentioned this. Will never again stay at this disorganized hotel with rude and unhelpful reservations.

My favorite hotel in the world

It had been a number of years since we stayed at La Fonda, and we were looking forward to our visit. Unfortunately the hotel, food and service did not meet expectations.
Our initial room, the size of a shoebox, had a thermostat that couldn’t maintain temperature and very little space for two people to walk around without bumping into each other. When I complained to the front desk the attendant couldn’t be bothered and indicated that she couldn’t do anything to accommodate a room change. I asked to speak with a manager but that request was rebuffed. It is apparent that La Fonda needs help in their customer service department because future attempts to contact management were unsuccessful.
Food was overpriced and not eventful. The pool and workout area are very small.
Overall I would not recommend La Fonda as your expectations will not be met.

We have stayed here numerous times. This will be the last. As others have mentioned, the place needs a refresh, renovation and better equiped staff. There are too many fine places to stay nearby and I will look at those options on next visit. The upsides are location, on-site bar and activity in lobby. Ricky doing our check in was friendly and efficient. It was clean though we daily had to help ourselves to the housekeeping cart as ammenities were not resupplied. The on-site restaurant was not a draw for us. Many, many other better choices steps outside the door.

It's always a little overwhelming when researching a city and deciding where to book your stay, but we made the right decision to book our Santa Fe visit at La Fonda! Great location...comfortable lodging, good restaurants and lovely amenities.
Service was also great...very friendly, helpful and responsive.
Our room was nice size...not huge, but good. Bed was comfortable. Bathroom was roomy, nice closet. It was odd not to have a dresser/storage drawers. Mini fridge and coffee maker were nice to have.
Hotel restaurants offered nice options. The fine dining restaurant was excellent, and a little pricey ($6 for a cup of coffee seemed excessive); the "bar restaurant" served great drinks, burgers, salads, etc. and the rooftop terrace on level 5 provided great views and vibe.
The weather was cooler than usual when we visited, but we did manage to enjoy the pool area for one afternoon to soak in some sun. It was an odd location within the hotel, but it was a nice area.
There was also a French/Italian Pastry Shop located off the lobby area...open for breakfast and lunch. Very nice...somewhat limited menu, but good stuff!
A number of shops were also located inside the hotel for a little browsing/shopping.

Excellent hotel. The location is outstanding for a quick weekend visit and walkable to everything. The hotel is historic and charming while still delivering high quality service. In regard to the other reviews mentioning noise: we were on the third floor and rarely heard anyone in the hallways. From our perspective it was a fantastic choice for staying near the plaza and we would highly recommend.
The only odd thing is that our mattress did not have a fitted sheet but rather a flat sheet tucked in, which was unusual, and the pillows were a little flat. Those were our only complaints and they did not detract from our stay.

We stayed at the newer part of the hotel, the Terrace Inn in an executive suite. The hotel's description states it rooms have private patios are are quiet, tranquil with a dedicated assistance to help with anything. None of this could be further from the truth. The patio borders the private outdoor party area, so the 2 nights we were there, there was a band, food, drunk guests looking into our room. The assistance did not help us with luggage, directions or information. Every question was met with "I don't know" with no initiative to find out. I never saw them interact with anyone. The bathroom was nice and had been renovated, the rest of the suite smelled old like it hadn't been used in a long time. Don't fall for the bait and switch as we did.

Quiet room. A tad on the small side but had everything we needed and we like older historical hotels. Comfortable bed. Stayed in a traditional king. Room 516. 5th Fl. Faced Loretta Chapel. Nice view and on the quiet side of the hotel. Our room was away from the noisy bar at the Bell Tower at the other end of the hallway. Liked that we could crank the windows open about 6 inches.
Excellent on site restaurant but don’t be in a hurry. We ate two breakfasts and one lunch there. Staff is professional and friendly. Fun to walk around and view the architecture and art.
Two dinners at nearby Zeng which is terrific. Asian food very reasonably priced. Best homemade - handmade on site - pan fried vegetable dumplings we have ever eaten.
The La Fonda is very expensive but it was worth it for the location and quality of room. Very convenient for walking to sites. The concierge recommended City Tours. We took the 2:30 tour. The guide was great but the dilapidated trolley that held 15 people was horrible. Makes USA look like a poor, falling apart country. I couldn’t find the City Tours listed anywhere so I’m not sure it’s even a legal vendor. The seats were extremely uncomfortable on the trolly and it spewed stinking exhaust fumes into the passenger seating area. The broken down trolley should be traded for a hybrid or electric model. We just returned from a trip to Spain recently and the cities are clean. Every taxi is a hybrid and many cars are fully electric. La Fonda should not be recommending this rattletrap gas guzzling trolley to its guests.
Beware that it also seems to be the thing in Sante Fe for men to drive the loudest possible pickup trucks and muscle cars, gunning their motors, and constantly circling the La Fonda block. We had to close our windows against the violently loud gunning of motors that went on until late at night. Doesn’t exactly make for a quiet night’s sleep. Makes one wonder why Sante Fe puts up with the noise and pollution caused by these vehicles. We were there on a Friday and Saturday night. If you can, avoid weekends. Also, the La Fonda rooms are cheaper during the week.
