We stayed three nights at the Principal Hotel. My wife and I are not rich but we care about a clean bed and I guess we are a little picky when it comes to where we stay. The hotel room was very clean and very well put together. Loved the bathroom and the bed was very comfortable. We hit a room with a balcony. Door man was very helpful, always looking out for us with the weather. If I had to say a negative it is really just one thing but it seems to be common in Spain, and that is not having an iron or steamer for our clothes in the room. But like I said we are finding out that is common at many hotels in Spain. This was our first European hotel (we are from the US) and it was a great experience and I highly recommend staying at the Principal.

We compared several 5-star hotels in Madrid and decided on the Principal based on reviews, prices, and location. It is a great hotel. The feeling of being at the heart of the capital city is palpable. The structure itself is stunning - it’s on alot of City of Madrid Postcards - and the rooms are really nice with all of the expected and desired amenities. The front desk and the bar and restaurant are on the 6th floor. It’s a snazzy place to eat and/or have a drink. The staff at the Principal is always friendly and helpful. We will be back!

My husband and I returned from the Principal today after a three night stay. We were greeted by Riki (or Rikko) who was full of knowledge, helpful and altogether a lovely person. Javier was the same in opposite shifts to Riki. Our room was nice, with good quality bedding, bathroom products and very clean. We rang room service quite a few times (iron and board, a European plug etc) and always the requests were dealt with immediately. I love turn down and this was a nightly thing. The cleaning staff and the lady who did turn down always did a good job. Breakfasts were great. The fruit was exceptional, as was the bread, and cold boards, meat etc., if you fancied a cooked breakfast, there was a menu with a good choice. The two Laura’s at breakfast looked after us well, as did all the staff, a credit to the Principal. We had one dinner in Atico which we mainly enjoyed and the service was very attentive. We wouldn’t hesitate to stay here when we next visit Madrid.

Right in the centre of the city, this small but perfectly-formed hotel was spotlessly clean with very high standards of housekeeping. Linen was excellent quality and the bed was enormous! Quality bathroom products were provided. The breakfast, served on the sixth floor, was outstanding with an excellent selection of fruits, cheeses and other fresh produce. Staff were courteous, multilingual and well-presented. The in-house restaurant was excellent, but rather hidden away from passing customers as the entrance to the hotel is off a side street and very discrete . Altogether, an experience to be savoured and the Principal and its staff certainly made our six night stay very comfortable and pleasurable. Highly recommended.

We loved this hotel! It's beautiful, the staff is fantastic and very helpful and kind, the rooms are very nice, the beds comfy, the bathrooms warm, etc of course. We feel like we got a great deal on a large room with deck right in the middle of Madrid. We did not prepay for the breakfast but we should have - it's amazing and delicious, but you never know in advance. A large amount of goods at the buffet plus they make you end or such too order as well. 3 types of manchego and 6 different jamons. Fresh fruit that's actually ripe. Mmmm. Now you know, get the breakfast. We came in early January thinking it was the off season but it is not, it is a crowded city for the New Years to Epiphany period. People are everywhere

This boutique hotel is lovely- everything from its ideal central location in the City of Madrid, making ventures to most points of interest walkable, to the cleanliness and warmth of the well-appointed rooms to the impeccable service and hospitality of staff, this hotel is special.. The overall ambiance is charming and elegant. Buffet breakfasts each morning were beautifully presented with plentiful offerings representing both local Iberian and more common food fare. Nearby, the adjacent bar area, where we were so fortunate to have joined many other guests on New Year’s Eve, is where we all gathered to count down the minutes to midnight that were telecast to us from nearby Puerta Del Sol. That experience was nothing short of excitement and camaraderie, as we blessed the grapes before midnight, as Spanish tradition dictates. Such fun! Special mention must be made to our very wonderful concierge, Carlos Cortez, who worked tirelessly with us to plan our visit weeks before our arrival and then helped us along while we were there. Carlos, we will miss your elegant and quiet disposition, your knowledge, your patience and most of all, your beautiful smile!. Gracias! We plan to revisit the City of Madrid and Hotel Principal in the very near future. Thank you to all at this lovely hotel who have helped us to create such great memories. We will be back!

A friend recommended that we stay at the Principal on our recent weekend stay in Madrid, and we are so glad that he did, as it is a beautifully appointed hotel that is full of character. The location was perfect and every member of staff we dealt with was so helpful. What made it extra special was that we were celebrating our 50th wedding anniversary, and not only was our room upgraded, but we were greeted with a bottle of champagne and chocolates in our room. Totally unnecessary but very much appreciated. The food in the Attico restaurant was also superb, with a well stocked buffet at breakfast, though you could also order from the a la carte menu. Dinner at night was also excellent, and there was a good selection of wines to choose from. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking to visit Madrid

The Principal lived up to its Boutique Hotel billing. It probably earns a 4.5 rating. What I liked was a bit of old world design charm, with especially the roof top setting / bar with a wonderful view as a big plus point. The rooms were well and tastefully decorated (with a Nespresso machine - thank you). Everyone super friendly, from door man to chamber lady and my small complaint was taken seriously. Location is great, right on the Gran Via without the noise, close to the Retiro park. We had breakfast the last morning and it was fantastic, maybe a bit pricy. The downside is the relatively small rooms and bathroom. I would recommend this hotel for a romantic (long) weekend in wonderful Madrid.

The Principal is a hotel with a lot of charm and style and - even more important - with a professional as well as very kind and focused staff. The restaurant Atico is also worth staying for dinner there. The hotel is perfectly located for visiting Madrid by foot. Why also not five points? Well, for me five points mean that everything is more than perfect, especially for a 5 ***** hotel like The Principal. But: We will come back, in any case.

In a word “Wonderful” Everyone was terrific! Fabulous location. Great food, great breakfast and lovely terrace for an evening drink. We wish you the best if you are able to stay at this location. We certainly were treated very well. We recommend it.

Wonderful stay. Rooms are super comfortable and elevated. The staff was very accommodating to our every need and the most friendly. The hotel location is quiet while still a short walk to main sites, restaurants and shopping in Madrid. Highly recommend!

The Principal is an excellent hotel choice when visiting Madrid. Its staff is helpful and friendly, and the hotel is convenient to downtown venues, which are within walking distance. The rooms are nice and comfortable. I would definitely stay there again.

Staying here as part of our honeymoon trip and the hotel has been brilliant throughout. The staff are exceptionally friendly and efficient, the room is spotless and well appointed, and the location could not be better with everything within a walkable distance. Our experience with this hotel was perfect. The staff provides world class service. Very small detail was considered. From turning down the bed in the evening, to leaving special notes for us during our time there, they were fantastic. The restaurant I. The 6th floor was wonderful. Their breakfasts were perfect and the dinners exceeded every expectation. The views both from our hotel and the terrace was amazing. And the location was perfect. Only steps away from the Metro, and a short walk to shopping, museums, and more. If you are an American Express, customer, I would highly recommend this hotel. Book through American Express travel and you will get a lot of perks!

Overall, our stay at The Principal was very nice. Individual areas: Check-in: Pleasant but disorganized. I was given an ineffective room card twice. Since the elevator won't go to a floor without a card, it meant repeated trips back to the main desk on the 6th floor. We booked via AmEx Fine hotels. When I asked if an upgrade was available, I was told the hotel was fully booked but that my room was wonderful with a view of the park. When I finally was able to enter the room, my view was of two buildings. There was no park. I rarely get an upgrade via AmEx Fine Hotels, but please be honest about the room I am getting. Grade: 2 Stars Room: Less that what I expected for the price and the hotel's reputation. The bed was nonetheless large and comfortable, There was a small couch, a small TV, a refrigerator, a small safe and and one chair with a desk. Lighting was poor. There was nothing wrong with the room, it just felt dated and tired, more consistent with a Marriott than a 5-Star hotel. Grade: a very low 3 Stars Bathroom: Very nice. Updated shower with 3 heads, a heating rack for towels, and a separate room for the toilet. The towels were very nice. Grade: 5 Stars Staff: All were polite and very helpful. The bell staff/front door staff were especially nice, always available to help with cabs, Uber, directions. Grade: Strong 5 Stars Housecleaning: Excellent. Turn down at night. Grade: Strong 5 Stars Breakfast: Very nice selection of hot and cold food, bread, fruit, yogurt and juices. Ample, comfortable seating. The staff were always pleasant, but occasionally disorganized, irregardless of time. We weren't given an introduction to what was available at our first visit. On two visits, despite very light crowds, we waited ~10+ minutes for our coffee to arrive. On another occasion we ordered one coffee, but received three. At another visit, I ordered a plain egg white omelette (on the menu). I received an omelette with cheese. Grade: 5 Stars as the food, and the selection, were good enough to overcome occasionally disorganized service. Location: Excellent with close proximity to all major sites, restaurants. One block to the Grand Via Metro station. Grade: 5 stars Miscellaneous: The elevators are very small, with room for only 2 people. There is street noise at night until ~2300. Not terrible, and what you would expect with an urban location. There was a letter delivered to our room warning us of traffic disruptions due to the Madrid Marathon. The letter had the wrong date for the Marathon, a significant oversight given implications for travel in the city. When I contacted the Front Desk they said they were aware they sent the wrong date. A corrected letter was never received. Communication with staff prior to arrival was very good with prompt response to questions. Checkout: No problems. Grade 5 Stars Overall we enjoyed our stay, although our experience wasn't what we expected in a 5-Star hotel. We would stay again given pleasant staff, very nice breakfast, excellent housekeeping, and great location, albeit with tempered expectations re the room.

We ended up moving to the Hotel Urso and that was fantastic.

Despite the traffic outside, the rim was quiet and cosy. Breakfast was delightful with its huge array of goodies. The fabulous weather made our trip memorable.

We couldn’t have been more pleased with this property. Staff are terrific. Great location. Concierge pointed us to several awesome restaurants. Clean rooms that are well equipped. Would highly recommend. If you are going to Madrid this is a place to stay.

Even though we only spent two nights at the hotel, it was one of the best experiences we’ve had in any hotel we’ve ever stayed in. from the moment we were first greeted, until the attentiveness in our transfers to and from the hotel, the staff was top-notch, professional, polite, and personable. The hotel itself was intimate and well-kept. Our final meal at the hotel was breakfast on the day we departed. The food and service was exceptional in the selection of items was outstanding. We definitely plan to stay at The Principal the next time we’re in Madrid

We stayed 5 nights at The Principal and couldn’t have found a more central location that allowed us to walk to almost every where we needed to go. The facilities were impeccable, food was good and the staff were very pleasant and helpful. Thank you!!

First impression: not a 5* hotel. Car arrives at entrance. Our driver and "the porter" (I think his name was Juan?) are fumbling over each other trying to figure out who should handle out luggage. Finally I step in and lug multiple suitcases up about 5 steps (narrow entry way and I didn't see any other way to get our luggage up to what I had thought was the lobby). This area was more of a reception area; the lobby is located upstairs. However, while mentioning this "reception area," it irritated me upon getting settled in our room and going back outside that I noticed an open bottle of champagne off to the side to be given to guests checking-in and those that just want some bubbly -- yet we were never once offered any. Not a 5* hotel. Partner and I are brought to the lobby. I know there has been confusion about Hyatt Hotels and SLH hotels, and they have gone separate ways. However, we're Globalists with Hyatt. We booked this hotel through the Hyatt app. The confirmation of our reservation noted that it is a Hyatt. We get to reception. The man, who in my opinion, had absolutely no personality whatsoever, acknowledged our reservation but declined to honor any of our Hyatt benefits. To the left of him is his manager, whom he asks about the matter. She, in a very terse manner, blithely dismisses us saying they are not part of Hyatt Hotels. She literally ignored us when were were trying to show her the reservation. Not a 5* hotel. Under comparable circumstances, and at the rate we had paid, it's not uncommon for the hotel to send up a bottle of wine and some fruit and cheese with a letter to apologize for the confusion. None of that happened. Not a 5* hotel. We also stayed at The Hyatt Centric Gran Via (just wrote a review on that hotel, too); and decided to trip the Principal for variety. We stayed here for 1 night and left. There are better located hotels in Madrid with much better staff (remember, I'm not just talking about 1 person here), and the rooms are much better appointed. Just on a side note, try taking the stair to your floor instead of the lift - the VERY tiny lift that hardly fits 1 person and 2 pieces of luggage; Your head will be spinning for days and you won't even know which door to open to your floor. The whole hotel is just....NOT A 5* HOTEL.
