The gym experience was great. Plenty of free weights and machines to ensure a complete workout. We were also able to get in a run and ride on their stationary equipment. We were in good hands with Tony and Sophie helping out with water and towels.

However, the fact that they still haven’t refunded my deposit, despite numerous communications has left a real sour taste in my mouth. Nearly 3 weeks after being told it would be 72 hours is not a good luck for the Royalton Brand.

I have been to many resorts in Mexico over the years and this one would definitely be at the bottom of my list. This is simply not a five star resort- I’d put it at a 3 maximum. It was Spring break when we travelled and the resort was absolutely packed. I do not think this resort should operate at full capacity as it felt like we were herds of animals fighting for what would be easy to access at any other resort I’ve been to.
First, the food. The food experience is very bad. So bad in fact my husband experienced horrible food poisoning. I mean violently vomiting. He was completely out of commission for the majority of the trip. We believe it was from the Taj Indian restaurant. I think when attempting to feed 4000 people at once, the standards of cleanliness and food preparation are largely compromised. This definitely ruined our trip.
The “best food” we had was a bowl of “melted cheese” at the Mexican restaurant. I waited over an hour in line for a hamburger at the food truck and if you want coffee in the morning, be prepared for a very long wait at the cafe. The buffet was wild- I’ve actually never seen such chaos.
Between having to set an alarm at 12am to book a dinner reservation and waking up at 6am to reserve spots at the pool, this was not a restful vacation. After 7:30am there is no chance of getting a spot anywhere.
There is a lot of seaweed on the beach, but they do have tractors that try to remove most of it in the morning. The water itself is just not the blue waters you envision when booking a trip like this. It is incredibly murky.
One day we found a spot on the beach and after a few hours we were kicked off the beach by staff as we did not realize the section of the beach was for “diamond club” members only. There were no signs or any indication that this was for DC customers. After spending a couple days in the room due to food poisoning, all we wanted was to rest by the ocean. It was embarrassing to be kicked off the beach due to our “lack of status”. Of course, if we had known it was for Diamond Club members, we would not have gone there. We attempted to upgrade to diamond club for a potentially better experience but were told we could not. We didn’t even want to switch rooms… we really just wanted a quieter place to rest after the food poisoning experience but we were declined. It felt very much like an “us vs. them” thing. Non diamond club members are treated like second class citizens.
We found a spot at the pool and when using the washroom close by, I found that the stall had been completely painted with vomit. Like all over the floor, up the walls, etc. This went unattended by staff for hours. We had to warn anyone who tried to go in not to. I have no idea when it was eventually cleaned, but in the hours we were there, not one staff person came.
A few pros: The staff we interacted with were very nice. Just don’t get trapped into them selling you anything. They’ll offer you things in return like massages or cabana rentals.
We had an Expedia rep on site named Krystel. She was absolutely incredible. She continuously offered to help my husband while he was sick and checked in with us regularly. I can confidently say she went above and beyond. She did everything she could within her control to make our trip better, including a couple lovely surprises in our room. My otherwise negative review has nothing to do with Krystel, as she was the only good thing about this resort.
We will not be returning to this resort, nor will we be recommending this resort to anyone. Please use caution when booking this resort. I appreciate everyone has a different experience and I’m happy for those who enjoyed their time. But spending half your trip in your room vomiting due to food poisoning was less than enjoyable. There are much better resorts in the Cancun area.

Alfonso at the Italian restaurant was wonderful. The food has been wonderful and the service has been amazing. Elui and Mr G have been excellent butlers. We have especially enjoyed the Italian restaurant and the workers there. They have all been so accommodating.

Great patron involvement and accommodation to vegetarian meal. All associates were super wonderful and friendly. My husband had a birthday celebration and they sang happy birthday and gave a piece of cake ☺️

Overall it was a fantastic resort - one of the better ones that we have ever stayed at. We stayed in the Diamond Club Jacuzzi Terrace.
The resort itself was very clean and the staff were all super friendly and attentive, especially as a Diamond Club member. Check in was very easy - as soon as they realized we were Diamond Club they immediately brought us to the Club lounge where check in was very quick. The room was pretty standard with a nice jacuzzi and the amenities were quite nice.
Our butlers were Jesus and Dulce who were both absolutely fantastic, friendly and went out of their way to assist us! Shout out to these amazing people. Jesus helped us blow up our pool floats, stocked our fridge with extra beer and made all of our reservations. My husband asked Dulce to fill up the jacuzzi one night and she went above and beyond and put bubbles in it with champagne and chocolate covered strawberries when she found out it was our honeymoon! They were worth the DC alone.
The food was pretty standard, there were a lot of options at the dinner buffet and everything tasted good. We ate at the Steakhouse, Tappenyaki and Mexican restaurant. All were pretty good in terms of food but the Tappenyaki was a fantastic experience and the chefs definitely work very hard! Grazie-to-go had awesome lunch pizzas. The only downfall was that the room service took forever. You're waiting about an hour an a half for your food - but it does come warm!
The pools were nice, we mostly stayed near the DC pools because they were quieter. There's lots of activities going on all the time so there's always stuff to do. There are a lot of chair hoarders, because the beach towels are a free for all, people will place towels on chairs and we don't see them for the rest of the day which is really irritating but again, that's a people problem, not a resort issue. The beaches were okay - there was a lot of seaweed but there's nothing the resort can do about it and they did try and clean up what they could. We still went in the ocean almost daily!
DC itself was worth it for us - we liked the quieter atmosphere of the DC pools and the top-shelf liquor - it makes a big difference in the taste of the drinks. We also had our own breakfast buffet which was amazing because there was usually a long lineup outside of the regular breakfast buffet. There was also less chair hoarding - we always found a seat in the shade in the DC areas. There were definitely a lot of hidden advantages to the DC experience.
Overall it was an amazing experience and we definitely want to go again. There is something for everyone at this resort. The main issues we had were with other ignorant guests but the resort can't help those! The staff is really what made it exceptional - from our amazing butlers to the pool bar staff, waiters and all other employees. They really made us feel welcome and special.
Highly recommend!

Awesome vacation, great Experience, great staff!
We stayed for 7 days and we are vegetarian. Our trip was made really special by chef Limberg. Carlos in the buffet area was very helpful as well. In general the staff is very nice and helpful. Would definitely recommend this for anyone looking for a good vacation.

The Royalton Splash is NOT a 5* resort and was very disappointing.
The staff were friendly, particularly the bar staff in the diamond club lounge in the evening. The room was clean and the diamond club pool was good due to the amount of people using the resort.
However there were many things that we left disappointed with over the course of our stay. We upgraded to diamond club and this was mainly due to the private pool area, at the start we didn’t notice any problems however people who weren’t diamond club began sneaking into this area daily taking up sun beds and using the facilities, sometimes they were moved on, but more often than not they were just allowed to stay which was very frustrating after paying a lot of extra money for the privilege to use this quieter area. We complained to our butler about this but were told they don’t like telling people to move as they ‘get upset’, so why bother paying for diamond club if they will just let anyone in anyway and who cares if diamond club guests complain as they have already paid the money!
Secondly, the food was very hit and miss, and was more miss from our experience. The buffet at breakfast and lunch was the mostly same every day and over the course of the stay this got very repetitive. However as we upgraded to diamond club we could use Grazie to have an a la carte breakfast which we utilised a lot of the time. But in our second week this was closed due to management deciding there was not enough capacity to justify opening it, which we were very disappointed with as this is a diamond club perk that we paid for, we were also not notified about this, we just found out when we turned up one morning. We tried almost every restaurant and our favourite restaurant was Zen and Grazie the Italian. We were very disappointed in the steakhouse, the smokehouse and the cave, the rest were average. In our opinion due to the size of the resort and the constant turnover of people, this affected the quality of the food in the restaurants, the beef dishes in particular was a very poor standard, very fatty. Our Butler also reserved some restaurants for us but on two occasions we turned up to the restaurant that they booked for us and it was closed, which threw our plans in the air and we had to try and get in elsewhere at the last minute.
As for the entertainment, it was very child focussed, with bouncy castles, face painting and the shows, making it very chaotic. Obviously if you have children that is great, however we felt that there should have been another area with more chilled entertainment for adults without children, due to the size of the resort this isn’t a big ask. The shows were also very loud and if you wanted an early night you may struggle sleeping. We often had people shouting in the corridors late at night (1am+) returning back from the entertainment. The resort was very loud in general with things going on throughout the night, we didn’t have a night without broken sleep from this. We also found the bed to be very uncomfortable, giving us back pain most mornings and resulting in one of us having a trapped nerve.
Our room was left unlocked by the housekeeping staff on 5 separate occasions, multiple times we came back to the room wondering why our wrist bands weren’t working on the lock, to then push the door handle and the door was just open so anyone could have entered if they knew. Again we complained to our butlers about this who said they would look into this, but nothing happened and it just continued.
The resort shops were very pricey, we wanted to get some crisps for the room and these were $14 for a pack of crisps and $12 for some Haribos! We also needed some medicine which we didn’t bring with us and this was $30 was a pack of tablets which would be £1 in the UK. We also paid to do the Romantic dinner on the beach for our final night ($250), my partner had food poisoning from this and we were unable to finish the meal, we told our butlers and staff about this but no apology, compensation or discount was given which we were shocked and disappointed with.
Overall we would not recommend staying here, especially if you are a couple, it is more of a family resort we found. Diamond club had some benefits but with some of its privileges being closed without notice, people using the facilities when they shouldn’t be and the butler messing up some of our reservations, it didn’t seem worth the money. There was also a convention on which seemed never ending and took over a lot of the hotel.
