The Ten Most Over-the-Top Extravagant Swimming Pools in the World
Luxurious resorts and destinations around the world are known for their extravagant, over-the-top swimming pools. When it comes to the most extreme examples, the scope and scale almost inspire disbelief. But we assure you, these pools are completely real -- and make for great honeymoon and bucket list ideas.
The Blue Lagoon Pool at Sharm El Sheikh - Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt
The multibillion-dollar pool built in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, as part of a massive resort project is the largest in the world. So just how large is that? Insanely, obscenely, astoundingly large. To be more specific, it's 2,428 feet long and 591 feet long. That's just under half a mile of pool length, addint up to a jaw-dropping 1,041,947 square feet of surface area.
In fact, the company that built it had to develop new methods of water treatment just to make it a success, and maintaining it is estimated to cost at least $4 million per year. It's more of a natural lagoon than a swimming pool, and basically goes on as long as the eye can see.
The Infinity Pool at the Marina Bay Sands Resort - Singapore
The rooftop infinity pool at the Marina Bay Sands Resort is located within its "Sky Park" -- an incredible sight in and of itself. Sitting atop the hotel 57 stories high, the Sky Park looks like a long, curved boat stretched all along the three towers of the resort. Among the things to do and see, other than the best views in the entire city, is an infinity pool that makes you feel like you're swimming on the edge of the world.
San Alfonso del Mar - Santiago, Chile
This swimming pool was the largest in the world until the pool at Sharm El Sheikh was built (by the same company). This unreal aquatic creation is located at the San Alfonso del Mar Resort in the exciting city of Santiago, and pumps water in from the ocean and then processes it to avoid having to empty and fill the enormous pool manually. In addition to being long, the pool gets to 115 feet deep, so less strong swimmers might want to stick to the shallow end! As a result of its depth, this pool is just as much for swimmers as it is for kayakers and even sailers. You'll see a bit of everything, and since it's so enormous, it still never gets crowded.
The Perivolas Suite Pool at Perivolas Hotel - Santorini, Greece
The total tranquility and unbelevable views of Santorini make the infinity pool at the Perivolas hotel a must-add for our list. These are the kinds of views that no photo could ever do justice -- you just have to see them for yourselves. Make sure you book the Perviolas Suite, and you'll have exclusive, private access to the pool from your very own home away from home.
The Tank Pool at The Golden Nugget - Las Vegas, Nevada
If you've ever wanted to swim with sharks but were always a bit too freaked out by the idea, The Tank Pool at Vegas' Golden Nugget casino hotel is a must-do. The pool integrated seamlessly with a glass aquarium, making you feel like you're swimming with sharks and all kinds of other wildlife without ever letting them in. For an added bit of fun, a clear waterslide twists directly through the aquarium tank, letting you zoom past the sharks before splashing into the main pool area. It's not a very large pool, so you have to hit it at the right time to avoid crowds, but the aquarium tank design is too unique that it's one of the most extravagant in Vegas.
The Pool at Hotel Villa Hoegg - Ennetbürgen, Switzerland
We knew that a swimming pool from Switzerland was sure to make this list, as it's a country with more than a couple extravagant pools with views of the Swiss Alps. We settled on the infinity pool at Hotel Villa Hoegg, a Swiss boutique hotel, which features views of Lake Lucerne, that will make you melt. Another great reason this pool to stands out is, as part of a boutique hotel, you'll never find it overwhelmingly crowded.
Lion Sands Tinga Lodge - Kruger National Park, South Africa
Each room at Tinga Lion Sands comes with its own private pool overlooking the wilds of Kruger National Park, South Africa's premier safari hotspot. Soaking in the water with your other half while you kick back and relax with champagne, watching incredible African game walk by grazing, hunting, and exploring is a life-changing experience. For other swimming pools at luxury African camps that combine privacy, luxury, and game viewing, check out the Chongwe River House Pool in Zambia.
Swimming Pool at the Hanging Gardens of Bali - Bali, Indonesia
Recognized by the likes of Conde Nast Traveler and others, this serene infinity pool is perched above the Balinese rainforest, allowing you and your beau to float above the canopy as monkeys scamper by and swing through the trees.
Swimming Pool at The Oberoi Udaivillas Hotel - Rajasthan, India
Swimming here makes you feel like you're in an elevated castle moat, views of the majestic lake, gardens, mountains, and palaces beyond. There's no pool quite like it anywhere in the world.
Seagaia Ocean Dome Main Pool - Miyazaki, Japan
This pool is modeled as a faux-beach, and is housed in a water park built into a massive dome with a retracting roof. With artificial waves and a "blue sky" that is unfurled when it's rainy out, this place is straight out of The Truman Show with Jim Carrey. The only difference is, you can tell it's not a real beach! When it isn't too crowded, you might even see surfers catching some of the indoor waves!
