Some honeymooners are swapping the classic all-inclusive beachfront vacation for a more adventurous and out-of-the-ordinary experience. If you’re looking for a one-of-a-kind honeymoon destination, Iceland should definitely be on your radar. From its storybook-like landscapes to its charming towns, there’s no shortage of things to do in this beautiful country.

One activity that should be at the top of your list is visiting the Sky Lagoon. Opened in 2021, the geothermal spa is located in Kópavogur, just minutes outside Reykjavík. Let’s dive in!

Why Visit the Sky Lagoon?

Sky Lagoon Iceland

Until 2021, the “big” spa to visit was the famous Blue Lagoon. I’ve visited both spas myself, and while the Blue Lagoon is definitely a must-see, it can get crowded and may not offer the intimate romantic experience that some honeymooners are looking for.

The Sky Lagoon, on the other hand, offers a more secluded experience that makes it perfect for honeymooners looking for a romantic escape. What sets the Sky Lagoon apart from other geothermal spas in Iceland is its incredible view of the ocean. With its infinity pool design, you’ll feel like you’re soaking in the middle of the ocean.

What to Expect at the Sky Lagoon

The vibe at Sky Lagoon is extremely laid-back and friendly. Gendered locker rooms are available, or couples can opt for private accommodations.

The pool itself is divided into two sections: the warm lagoon and the cold plunge pool. You can enjoy both by alternating between the two, which is said to have numerous health benefits for your body. There is also a swim-up bar that sells a variety of both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages (try the Töst!), as well as small souvenirs like hats and water-proof phone protectors.

Try the 7-Step Skjól Ritual

What really sets the Sky Lagoon apart from other spas in the region is the seven-step Skjól Ritual. This ritual is a self-guided journey that takes you through different rooms and experiences, each designed to rejuvenate your body and soul. From the hot pool with views of the ocean to the cold mist room, this experience will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed.

My personal favorite is the sauna. There are two sauna areas, one where phones are allowed and one where they’re not. Both saunas include Iceland’s largest and second-largest glass windows that provide jaw-dropping views of the ocean and surrounding landscape.

What stuck out to me the most about the Skjól Ritual was how everything in the experience wasn’t just “inspired by Iceland” but actually was Iceland. For example, the decor made from driftwood was actual driftwood that had washed up on Icelandic shores. Additionally, one of the walls of the spa was molded from a real Icelandic home. Incredible attention to detail like this truly brings the essence of Iceland into the experience.

The full seven-step ritual includes the following:

  1. Soaking in the Sky Lagoon
  2. Entering the cold plunge pool
  3. Warming up in the sauna
  4. Frolicking in a cold mist
  5. Applying a body scrub
  6. Sitting in the steam room
  7. Drinking the krækiber elixir

There are no clocks within the turf-house spa to help guests truly unwind and disconnect from the modern world. Honeymooners can spend as long as they like in each step, with most visitors taking between 1-2 hours to complete the entire ritual. However, it’s entirely up to you and your personal preference.

Dining at the Sky Lagoon

There are three dining options for guests. They include Smakk Bar, Gelimir Bar, and the Keimur Cafe. Like the turf house, the menu aims to promote authentic Icelandic cuisine.

The Smaak Bar is the largest dining area, which serves traditional Icelandic dishes like lamb and fresh seafood. I tried a reindeer pattee and absolutely loved it.

The Gelimir Bar offers a variety of specialty cocktails, wines, and beers on draft. Lastly, the Keimur cafe provides light snacks and pastries for those looking for a quick bite. The traditional donut is unmissable!

In addition to the dining options, there is also a well-stocked gift shop on-site where visitors can purchase souvenirs and skincare products made exclusively for the Sky Lagoon.

Final Thoughts

Overall, the Sky Lagoon is a must-visit for anyone looking to truly relax and rejuvenate on their well-deserved honeymoon. From the unbeatable views to the authentic Icelandic spa experience and delicious food, it’s an unforgettable honeymoon activity that captures the true essence of Iceland. Honeymooners will leave feeling refreshed, pampered, and with a deeper appreciation for Iceland’s natural beauty and culture.
