Whether they're just quiet and secluded gems or countries that have been isolated until recently, honeymooners are discovering more and more hidden treasures among the world's potential honeymoon destinations. A few locations in particular are slowly being discovered, but this trickle is about to turn into a torrent. That's why we think they'll explode in 2019, which means you want to get there before tourist traps take over mom and pops, and packaged culture replaces genuine experiences.
Some of these, thankfully, will never let themselves become completely packaged for tourist consumption. But tourism can still have the effect of higher prices and more development, particularly over ecologically sensitive areas. So if you go, go soon. And if you do, make sure you donate to an organization devoted to preserving the ecology, culture, or other aspect of the region you visit. All travel has an impact, and you can lessen it -- and protect these lovely places -- by rounding out your trip with some charity or volunteering.
Of course, there's no shortage of romance in these destinations as well. Stunning scenery, amazing weather, and unforgettable adventures make these up-and-coming destinations the top picks for a romantic getaway explosion in 2019:
Sumba - Indonesia
Move over, Bali! This other Indonesian island hasn't been fully discovered yet, so it's quieter, more intimate, and more secluded. White sand and bright blue water make for secluded beach-going where you can watch the surfers hang ten in the distance, or find a quiet spot beneath the palms to call your own. Culture buffs won't be disappointed either, as a set of meglithic tombs lies in wait through the jungle.
And these aren't just some ancient ruin -- members of the local Marapu religion still perform bloody sacrifices there, at the behest of their gods. This religious group only exists in a few extremely remote regions of the world. If being reminded of animal sacrifice doesn't exactly sound romantic to you, you'll feel right at home exploring the idyllic beaches, exciting street markets, stunning waterfalls and lakes, and sleepy villages.
Croatia - Eastern Europe
Dine on the water on incredible seafood, explore the awe-inspiring medieval town of Dubrovnik, or have a culture-moon touring palaces, monasteries, museums, and cathedrals galore. Oh, did we mention you can also laze around on stunning beaches all along the entire western coast of the country?
Vietnam - Southeast Asia
Sail, hit the beaches, or rock climb through the otherworldly Avatar-like beauty of Ha Long Bay. Navigate the exciting bustle of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh city) and haggle with vendors among the endless spice, produce, meat, and handmade good stands of Binh Tay market. Explore the jungles, temples, and ancient history of a place that only opened up to tourism in relatively recent years.
The Azores - Portugal
The Azores is an adventure paradise, but with beauty this startling, it's just as tempting to just sit back and absorb the mind-boggling vistas. Bike, parasail, kayak, paddleboard, sail, and fall in love all over again in this honeymoon wonderland.
Vieques Island - Puerto Rico
Unfortunately, Vieques is still recovering from the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria. The good news is, you can still visit, and the money you put into the local economy will help this remote little island in their rebuilding efforts. Not all restaurants and hotels are open, and hotels are shared between vacationers and workers who are here for the repair efforts. Every dollar helps, and this island is counting on tourism returning to reinvigorate the economy after the storms.
It's a rare instance where you can get rock-bottom prices and give back in a very real, immediate way to the community you're visiting...and both for the same reason. In addition to beaches, imcluding a black-sand beach, this beautiful little island offers up hiking, horseback riding, sailing, and laid-back boutiques to shop at in the breezy and very walkable little downtown.
Beirut - Lebanon
It's no surprise Beirut offers plenty of historical sights and culture. But with several legendary Mediterranean beaches within 80 kilometers, you'd have to be crazy not to beach bum it for a couple of day trips to the sea.
Montenegro - Eastern Europe
From its beaches to beyond, this entire country, though tiny, is utterly breathtaking. Ancient seaside towns allow you to soak up the old-world vibe, while rugged countryside awaits the honeymoon adventurers at heart.
