55-year old actor Nicolas Cage thought he found the ultimate treasure when he married 34-year old makeup artist Erika Koike, but it seems the relationship didn't have a solid foundation. The Hollywood actor blushed...then filed for an annulment after just four days. The real kicker? Cage claimed through a rep that the marriage wasn't valid because...wait for it...he was too drunk to know what he was doing.
I'd say that you can't make this stuff up, but this about half the plot of the famous Nicolas Cage movie Leaving Las Vegas! Yes, this was a drunken Vegas wedding featuring a guy who, in a movie, played a Hollywood alcoholic who drinks his face off in Vegas and falls in love with an unlikely partner.
Dating since around April 2018, Koike made Cage's fourth wife...at least, she was for a at least few minutes, before Cage sobered up. Koike is pushing back, saying their marriage doesn't qualify for an annulment. An annulment is different from a divorce in that it legally is the same as if the marriage never happened at all. Rather than a marriage being legally broken up, it is dissolved from the books entirely.
But Koike's complaints aren't due to a desire to stay together...she actually wants a divorce instead. She's also salty about what she says were lost work opportunities and a damaged reputation resulting from her marriage to Cage. In addition to that, she's asking Cage to reimburse her for all the legal fees stemming from their marriage mess.
We would assume the rift in their relationship was due to his drinking, except that judging by Koika's past two DUIs, maybe drinking is what got them together in the first place! After all, court documents say that both Cage and his short-term bride were both drunk before they headed to the altar. At least, that's what one of them CLAIMED in court. The minister who officiated the marriage says that both appeared to be stone-cold sober during the whole affair, and knew exactly what they were doing.
Either way, Koika's criminal record doesn't stop with drinking and driving -- she has a worrying domestic violence charge on her record as well. Cage claims he didn't learn about her legal problems until they had already married, AND that she was having some kind of romantic relationship with someone else that he had no idea about. If his claims are true, the annulment might be valid...but it's sad that he's using his alcoholism to try and strengthen his legal case.
Cage isn't known for his long marriages. His was first married to Patricia Arquette in 1995, a union that lasted until 2001. After that he wedded Lisa Marie Presley for just three months, and then a waitress at his favorite restaurant named Alice Kim. To his credit, that relationship lasted about 11 years. Cage has two sons, Weston and Kal-El. Weston is from his relationship with actress Christina Fulton, who he never married. Kal-El is from his marriage to Alice Kim.
So how long will it be until Nicolas Cage's next relationship begins? We'll be watching to see!
