The experience at The Spectator Hotel, Charleston, SC. began several months prior to the trip. The professionalism of the multi concierge staff was outstanding with both timely information and referral to a local florist for flowers upon arrival. The description of a boutique luxury property was accurate and the expectations were met without question. We were greeted by name and the butler staff offered welcoming beverages, while our luggage was taken to our suite. Throughout the stay, the butler staff and in particular, Chuck, Michelle and Darryl provided outstanding services with great recommendations of local Low Country cuisine. We will return to Charleston and will only stay at The Spectator Hotel. Five stars do not begin to illustrate the quality of the property.

The service was fantastic -- everyone was cheerful, helpful, warm and welcoming. We enjoyed the included extras, such as complimentary breakfast, snacks, non-alcoholic drinks and a welcome cocktail. Even though the hotel is in a central downtown location, the room was extremely quiet (and we are very light sleepers!). We walked to all the locations we wanted to see -- historic houses, the waterfront, etc. Highly recommend if you are looking for a boutique hotel.

My husband gifted me a Gatsby experience at this hotel for March 2025 as a date ‘weekend’ for Christmas. 3 nights experience. The bill was $3500. We just received a call there was a computer glitch and he needed to pay an additional $1700. We cancelled the entire trip. This is a grotesque over charge. I’m embarrassed for this hotel. Their fault. And we have to pay? You should be ashamed of yourself.

Perfect place to celebrate a special occasion!
The front was so welcoming, making us feel as though they were waiting just for us. Our butler was anxious to help us and surprised us with special birthday celebration gifts. The lounge is beautiful and a great place to meet new friends. Wonderful experience

So we stayed at the Spectator last week. And we were there for a full week so got to know the hotel intimately. I wish I could give the Hotel 6 Stars but the ranking only allows 5. UGH ! It was our first trip to Charleston. Luckily, we landed at this little oasis. My comments have to start with the Staff. They were THE Best !
Hannah, Simone, Daryl, Jim, Allan, Rose, Melissa, James, Matthew and Anna and the whole Staff were outstanding the entire week !!! Great service !
We loved the Spectator ! Super clean with a great shower, water pressure and fluffy WARM towels. Every morning there was a local newspaper and WSJ. Nice touch ! You can't even buy a newspaper at most hotels. The Fitness Center next door was the perfect size with just enough equipment. It only rained one day but the furnished umbrellas were a big help. As were the stamps that were offered by the Hostesses at the front desk for my postcards. We have to complement the tasty and healthy breakfasts available in the bar each morning. Breakfast was included in the price ! Finally, the central location of your Hotel could not have been better. We walked the entire city from your front door. Now the Spectator is not cheap... BUT, I am all about the value, and this hotel hits the mark on all cylinders. Home Run !!! We will be back. And soon !

We've stayed at The Spectator Hotel in Charleston several times before. I am happy to report that it is just as wonderful as ever.
The level of personal service is extremely high. The Spectator sets a standard that is unmatched in our experience (and we've stayed at some pretty nice hotels including a half dozen Ritz Carltons, and a couple of Four Seasons properties).
My wife was celebrating a milestone birthday last week. The concierge desk was wonderful about arranging for some balloons to be presented to her when we checked in. We requested a room with a view, and Room 305 had a wonderful view of the Ravenel Bridge and Charleston rooftops. My wife got a warm note from our butler as well as a nice bottle of sparkling wine and a delicious hazelnut cake. When we couldn't finish the bottle on the first night, our butler thoughtfully brought us another rather than let us drink flat sparkling water! The valet was considerate and always cheerful. A front desk attendant went the extra mile to make sure I found the entrance to the gym at the sister property next door. A butler that helped us two years ago remembered our names and wished my wife a happy birthday. The general manager was happy to take my call to discuss details to make my wife's birthday extra special.
I asked our butler to polish a pair of shoes and steam a shirt that had gotten wrinkled on the long drive down. He ironed both shirts I had packed and polished and returned my shoes within an hour so that I would have them available for dinner that evening.
The hotel represents an exceptional value. While it is not cheap, The Spectator give its customers a lot for their money. In addition to the butler services, the complimentary drinks and refreshments were very welcome. Breakfast served in the room (or the lobby bar) is also included. High quality toiletries are generously provided. Bikes are also available (but we didn't use them during our stay). We loved the fact that the hotel still provides stationary (which came in handy). The butler will cheerfully deliver coffee or tea on request at any time of day.
The Spectator has avoided the temptation to quote a room rate and then tack on a "resort fee". When a restaurant we visited (Pier 101 at Folly Beach) tacked on a "technology fee" at lunch, I was again reminded of how much I appreciate the Spectator's straightforward pricing.
The location is excellent. The State Street address is just a stone's throw away from St. Phillips, Queen Street , Lower King and the pineapple fountain and swings at the end of Vendue Range. We seldom use our car unless we are visiting family or friends off the Peninsula. I should note that the hotel is close to the Market. While it was absolutely quiet at night during our stay, it is possible that it could be noisier in high season.
The Spectator staff makes us feel appreciated, and, though the term is overused, treats us like family. It is an exceedingly comfortable place to stay. It is our all-time favorite hotel.
