This hotel wants very badly to be a high end luxury hotel, but it ends up unfortunately falling short to be just ok. Read on fellow travelers.
My husband and I were traveling to Munich for my 50th birthday to celebrate with our friends who live in and around the city. We thought to splurge a bit beyond our usual accommodation in Munich due to the occasion and holiday so chose the Platzl.
The location is hard to beat. A two minute walk to the Marienplatz and the train station there. Five minute walk to the Residenz and just a few more steps to the Odeonplatz. A few more minutes walk finds you at the English Garden and Haus der Kunst. The famous Hoffbrauhaus is also just around the block, if you are so inclined.
When we arrived we were greeted with bottles of water by the bell man and our suitcases were safely stored until the room was available. So far so good. We were off to get our first gluhwein at the Christmas market in Marienplatz.
When we received notification our room was ready, we found the desk clerk to a bit rude and dismissive. I think there was an eye roll in there. Not welcoming or warm in any way. Ok, we're in Germany so some of that can be chalked up to the culture so no biggie. Even if >95% of the time Germans we've encountered are very polite and welcoming. We'll just let that go.
When we got to our room we found our sink leaked onto the floor which ultimately could not be repaired so we were upgraded to the next class of room that overlooked the front of the hotel.
When my husband came down ill the next morning, we were able to get room service to deliver the breakfast that we would normally have gone down to enjoy.
But high end hotels pride themselves on providing the BEST. Best location. Best staff. Best food. Best building. Best linens. But we found everything to be just average.
The bed was comfortable. There is even a "Pillow Menu" if you prefer something other than what is provided. The towels were terrible. They were like sandpaper, formerly white quickly turning gray and very thin. The rain shower was wonderful. The Nespresso coffee maker the room was dirty, struggled to work smoothly, came with three pods and only one mug was provided. The room was very clean. We find this true of most German hotels. Spotless. The noise was terrible! The hotel was just recently renovated, however the renovation didn't seem to include sound proofing. The Platzl is housed in an old building, most likely predating the United States, so some leeway must be given. But we could hear ever door close up and down the hall (day and night), every foot step and chair sliding in the room above, and a lot of noise from the street as the windows do not insulate very well. The staff was ok. But we've had better at far lesser hotels. The Josefa cafe was always an adventure. When you did get someone to help you, they were nice enough. But just enough. Service was ambivalent at best and if you just wanted to pop in for a drink, strap in for a 30 minute wait.
I would have loved to tell you this hotel was as luxurious and magical as I hoped it would be. But it just wasn't. It was just ok.

Great access to Christmas markets, wonderful attached restaurant (the Wirsthaus) and a friendly staff. Our room was great, with adjustable heat, and the breakfast was a joy. The staff in the breakfast room was wonderful. It is definitely a few extra dollars compared to the hotels near the central train station, but we enjoyed every aspect of this hotel and will stay there again.

We popped in for drinks here on our way back to our hotel as we thought the bar looked quiet and inviting. The drinks were nice but expensive. We were massively let down by the toilets which absolutely stank. I was glad to leave after that. It was highly unpleasant.

Excellent hotel in the center of Munich downtown
This hotal is wonderful and has a great bar rught on the coroner with windows so you can view the action outside.
Rooms are cozy and German Bavarian style, and large rooms, shower, comfortable bed, large closets, a safe and minibar. Staff is top notch, great place to stay.
This was a lovely boutique hotel very close to Marienplatz and the Hofbrauhaus.
The room was modern and clean with lovely bathrobes and a good shower.
All the were staff lovely.
There is a lovely bar downstairs with a cosy atmosphere.
We enjoyed our stay here.

This is a large and busy hotel with many international business and holiday travellers, including organised groups. It is well situated near Marienplatz and the main shopping area. Most of the sightseeing locations are within a short walk or public transport ride.
Our room was quite spacious and comfortable, looking out over the hotel's inner courtyard so not much of a view. The air conditioning is quiet and effective. We had no trouble sleeping in 20+ degrees. The staff were all helpful and friendly.
Breakfast was excellent: a wide range to choose from, with wurst and other local specialities. Eggs are cooked to order.
Housekeeping leaves a little to be desired. The floors are uncarpeted, hard and rarely swept. We found that a bathroom tooth mug that we had left to be washed had simply been rinsed and turned over.
The up-market restaurant closes on Sunday and Monday. The traditional grill room is open to the public and becomes fully booked days in advance. We did not try the bar/lounge snack service. If you want to be sure of eating well, there are many other places locally - Bavarian, Italian, Japanese.
This is a good place from which to explore Munich and all that it has to offer.

We’ll be back to Munich but not this hotel
let me start by saying the location is great. Around the corner is the Hofbrauhaus and minutes from Marienplatz. And the restaurants around are very food despite being the most touristy part of Munich.
The Josefa bar in the hotel is also good. Good breakfast and good alcohol.
BUT it is ridiculously overpriced. The rooms are teeny and loud. The street noise is fine as the windows are double paned. But you can hear everything in the hall. The beds are fine, nothing special. They have a pillow menu but the pillows are full of cork or wood shavings so not necessarily pillows you want.
And the service is moderate. When our key cards needed to be reset, 4 people were helping a couple check in so it took a long time to help us. When housekeeping inexplicably removed the pillowcases from our pillows and left them on our suitcase, it took 2 calls to get new pillowcases.
And the buffet breakfast is expensive and nothing special. Get breakfast at the Josefa bar.

Great hotel in a wonderful location near Marienplatz! Staff was very friendly! We had a room facing the courtyard and it was very quiet, the beds were comfortable, we had breakfast there everyday and it was so delicious, eggs cooked to order and some of the best hazelnut spread I’ve ever eaten. We ordered room service during or stay and the food was simply fantastic! We had secure parking under the hotel, and it was easy to use. Awesome location, we would recommend this place and would definitely stay there again!
