We stayed at Llao Llao for 2 nights on a recent trip to the Bariloche area in January 2025. The hotel is expensive (especially for Argentina), but after researching other hotels in the area, we realised that the location & views appeared to be the best in the region, so decided to splurge for a couple of nights.
We weren't disappointed with our decision & even though it's pricey for the room, the location is amazing & as they say it's location, location, location!
We opted for one of the more recently renovated superior rooms, after seeing travellers photos & reading not so good reviews of the older rooms and were pleased we paid the bit extra for the superior room. It was nicely decorated, fresh & clean and the views of the lake were lovely.
All of the staff were very professional & speak good English and the included breakfast was actually one of the best we had on our trip. There was a fantastic selection of breads, fruits, yoghurts, pastries and eggs to order. The coffee was also pretty decent too!
As mentioned before, the grounds & landscaping of the hotel are what really set it apart, with beautiful views over the surrounding lagos & montanas. There are both indoor & outdoor swimming pools with great views & all activities are included, which we didn't realise until we got there & were pleasantly surprised to find out. This includes, push bikes, archery, kayaks etc.
We borrowed bikes for one day of our stay & used them to cycle around Circuito Chico, which is a beautiful 16 mile (25km) circuit around the lakes. There are some fairly steep hills, but you will be stopping every kilometre to take photos of the surroundings, so it's not as bad as it sounds! We also stopped at the Patagonia brewery halfway around & enjoyed a cold beer & glass of vino overlooking the lakes.
You can also easily walk to the start of the Cerro Llao Llao trail in about 10-15 minutes from the hotel & from there walk for a couple of hours up to the top of the hill & also down to the lakeside and back if you wish. The walk is beautiful through bamboo & fir forests & when you get to the top the views are stunning across the lakes & mountains!
We ate dinner at the hotel both nights; one night in one of the Argentinean restaurant which does steaks & also pasta and the other night we ate in the bar area for a change. The food was pretty good quality but very expensive for what you get. The quite average burger I had in the bar on the second night was GBP25 & a 500ml Quilmes lager £10 a glass! Some of it is the inflation in Argentina at the minute to be fair & the exchange rate, but of course the hotel prices are also inflated, which is to be expected given the location & reputation of the hotel. Anyway nothing to complain about really, just something to bear in mind if you are on a budget.
Overall we had a lovely stay at Llao Llao & were pleased we decided to splurge to stay there, even if sadly it was just for a couple of nights in a beautiful part of the world.

The resort is absolutely GORGEOUS beyond belief and I loved learning about the history of the resort from our bike trip guides. We stayed there one night on our bike trip and most of us agreed that the rooms were shabby and we much preferred Alma Suites where we stayed the night before near downtown Bariloche. I know we were in a lower category room but it had stained carpet and we were on the 5th floor which had low ceilings and slanted ceilings so I kept hitting my head. The breakfast was gorgeous but again it's all show, no substance. If you need to stay here spend the money for a good room OR save your money, stay at Alma Suites (just gorgeous on the lake), nice breakfast and inexpensive and go to the Llao Llao for golf or for a drink (nice lobby bar). Our friends also loved Charming Hotel in Bariloche they said it was luxurious for only $300/night. Sorry Llao Llao but no excuse you need to have clean carpet or you are not a quality operation.

If ever I wanted to give a 5 star review it would have been for this visit. The Llao Llao hotel is somewhere I had wanted to visit for a very long time. However in some ways the Llao Llao is a reflection of Argentina as a whole in 2025 - incredible potential that somehow falls short of what it could truly be.
First the positives -
1) the location and setting are truly stunning. The hotel’s placement and the grounds are amazing.
2) views from the lobby bar, breakfast room, winter garden, pool and Moreno bar are truly 5 star. The pool on a warm summer day is incredible.
3) the front office team was excellent in responding to our concerns with respect to our first room and provided us with an alternative room.
4) the wait staff was largely very friendly and helpful even though at times they were a bit inattentive.
5) the evening entertainment was very good and lasted well into the evening. The hotel is pretty far from town so having nightly entertainment is a big plus.
6) while somewhat expensive, I really enjoyed the drinks from the bar. A big thumbs up to the whole lobby bar team!
7) while I didn’t play, the golf course looked nice and was truly wide open for play every time I looked.
8) access to the lake and park boat tours is great. All you need to do is walk down the hill and you are at the park marina.
The negatives -
1) the classic rooms are really dated at this moment. My first room was more like a converted attic rather than a true hotel room. Hopefully the ongoing renovation will make things better.
2) the food doesn’t really correspond to 5 star expectations at the current time. It was okay, but I never really said “wow” regarding anything I ate.
3) Bariloche proper is quite far and it’s even further to the airport. This in some ways isn’t really a negative but is something any potential guest should consider.
4) much has been written about the prices at the hotel being high for the region. This is 100% correct but in some ways I can understand it as the number of rooms in the hotel when compared to staffing levels and overall property size.
The bottom line -
Am I glad that I stayed at the Llao Llao? Most certainly. Would I stay again? I am not sure without better knowledge of the room renovation status. I would also most definitely want to rent a car to mitigate some of the issues of feeling isolated.
A better question is should you stay there? I would say yes as the experience at the Llao Llao is definitely unique and the pros, at least for me, outweigh the cons.

When someone said “the only place to stay in Bariloche is Llao Llao”, I rolled my eyes. When I booked it and saw the price, I thought “this better be worth it.” But when we pulled into the parking lot, we were amazed. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it a bit tired and worn out in spots? Yes. But where else can you stay surrounded by the history of this place and the beauty of the surroundings? We were certainly glad we stayed here and not one of the hotels in town. When we were given a non-renovated room, we asked for an updated one and were granted our request. Whereas dinner was unremarkable, breakfast made up for it. The staff with whom we interacted were kind and generous in their time and tales of their experiences in this unique property.

We were two couples staying for four days, and what a strange place Llao LLao is. We stayed in one of the new(ish) suites in the Morano block, whilst are friends were in the main hotel. If I had been staying in their room, I would have checked right out. The room was old, small and the bathroom clearly not renovated for decades.
Our suite was much better - great lounge, bathroom and bedroom, and hard to find any fault with - with amazing lake views and a big balcony. But I was paying almost three times what our friends were - which was insanely expensive, even for a good room.
The activities were good, we had fun at Archery and enjoyed the Canoes. A Boat trip was $700, and although we had a lovely time with a great crew, it was way too expensive. We also enjoyed the pool - despite some of the wind.
The problem here is two things (other than the un-renovated main hotel); the food and the need to nickel and dime everything (yes-including water if you have more than your one bottle of day - a little odd when you are paying over $1500 a night!).
The Patagonian restaurant was simply revolting, so we were stuck with the soulless Argentinian one, which in fairness had some great meat - but has the atmosphere of an abandoned cruise ship.
I suppose we should have rented a car to go out and about to eat - a lesson for other guests. This could be a great place, but just spend some money on the main hotel and stop trying to charge for everything!

The setting is beautiful. The main lodge is impressive but not luxurious—lots of commotion, slightly tired looking. We had a large room far from the main lodge. It had a wonderful view and huge balcony. It was quiet and felt private despite being one of many large rooms. The room was definitely a bit worn, but the view and peaceful atmosphere made-up for it.
Dinner at the upper level restaurant wasn’t noteworthy.

First we will say that the place and nature is wonderful, it's easy to just let everything flow away. And the weather was just wonderful.
The room had a Lake and mountain view, and you can never have enough of that scenery.
The room was ok, not big but enough. No kettle to make coffee or tea. The strange and not good enough from a 5* hotel is that there is not one bottle of water, includet in the room every day. We needed to pay 6.5 US dollar for every water bottle. We have been travelling a lot and now sins 22nd of September, and in every hotel, including Buenos Aires, we have 1 bottle of free water every day. We told the reception, as always they say we are sorry and will take it up with management...but we dont think anything will change if guests are not complaining. And 18 US dollars a day pr peron as a tax, just to walk around in the hotel..sorry LLao LLao, its to bad.

Overhyped and Overpriced: Disappointing Stay

While I can’t deny that Llao Llao is set against stunning scenery and offers delicious (albeit very expensive, comparable to Manhattan prices) dining options, that’s where the positives end. I’ve stayed in 5-star hotels worldwide, and this one left me cold.
1. Room missing basic amenities: Our room had no room-darkening shades, just a thin translucent curtain. The opaque set of curtains were immovable and didn’t cover the window, so the sun woke us up every day. Definitely not a restful experience.
2. Uncomfortable bedding: The linens were stiff, heavily starched, and crackled with movement. No fluffy duvets, just a basic blanket sandwiched between the sheets—far from the comfort you expect at a luxury hotel.
3. Chaotic breakfast: I had to walk around to flag down waitstaff for coffee and utensils. It was more frustrating than relaxing.
4. Nickel and diming at every turn: The worst part. After housekeeping threw out our disposable water bottles (which we planned to refill for a hike since the hotel has water stations), we were charged an outrageous 6,500 ARS for a replacement plastic disposable bottle. Considering the hefty resort fee of 36,000 ARS, it’s appalling that basic necessities like water aren’t included which are commonplace at 5-star hotels. It felt like they were squeezing every dollar from guests.
I know that heads of state and U.S. presidents have stayed here, but unless you’re a VIP of that level, I’d recommend finding a more welcoming and accommodating hotel—where you’re treated like a guest, not just a dollar sign.

We booked Llao Llao on the recommendation of friends and we were not disappointed. The setting is spectacular built in the magnificent Nahuel Huapi National Park. Like the town of Bariloche, the hotel looks like it belongs in the Swiss Alps and has a very interesting history. We had a stunning suite in the Moreno wing with uninterrupted views across the lake and Mt. Tronador. A small sitting room with the view and a nice patio/balcony. Good sized bedroom with comfy bed/pillows and excellent wardrobe space. The bathroom was large with a jacuzzi bath with a picture window with the same view, double sinks and a very decent shower.
Check-in and the concierge service was excellent (big shout out to Patricio). Breakfast was of a good standard although it was awfully busy, irrespective of the time we went. Views from this room are breathtaking especially if you are lucky enough to be seated at the window tables.
The BBQ (Argentino) restaurant (in the dining room where breakfast is served) was not available during our stay as it was booked for a corporate event. So we had a choice of the lobby bar or the Patagonia. The Patagonia is a cosy Swiss chalet-style room with pine furniture and chintz fabrics. Small niggle re the lighting which was a little stark - more canteen than intimate dining room. The menu is short but we each selected a good starter and main and opted for the excellent Llao Llao house red. Service was a little perfunctory ( bored but very competent) and we thought it expensive for the standard of food. The lobby bar was buzzy with live music on 2 nights so lovely for a cosy drink after dinner. Service in the bar was very good but the food menu is limited. Again, the food was OK and quite expensive.
In summary, spectacular hotel in a spectacular location and I would return in a heartbeat. It is such a pity that the food is so average.

The rooms are all wooden (floors, drawers, closets, etc.) so we could hear everything from the people above us. I would recommend requesting a room on the top floor for a better night of sleep.
The bathroom includes toiletries that smell like lavender, which is so lovely because there's lavender all around the hotel. Was a lovely touch!

It was difficult to find menus via their website. They have QR codes at each restaurant, and printed menus.
The service in the Argentinian restaurant was terrible the night we were there. Forgotten wine, inconsistent attention, so several tables were waving arms at the servers to get their attention.
One couple walked out as waiting for their bill was the final straw of the evening.

Beautiful place to visit, but would not recommend staying. After trekking through the mountains we were excited for our luxurious stay to celebrate our honeymoon. However, we quickly discovered that this hotel is living on reputation and history rather than curating special experiences and delivering 5 star hospitality. The hotel is essentially split into two - renovated rooms for $1200 per night (the 5 Star portion) and rooms as low as $350 a night (would rate 2-3 star). Despite drastic room differences the entire hotel is marketed as a 5 star experience, which it’s not. Dated rooms have small windows with bad airflow, old mattress and pillows, stained carpets, thin walls allowing you to hear neighbors plumbing, and tired bathrooms. After expressing our dissatisfaction we were offered an upgraded room of the same quality for a discounted nightly rate. Ultimately, we opted to leave and find more suitable accommodations with higher hospitality quality. We were reimbursed one night after staying only 3 hours of a 3 night stay. There is so much potential and the views and location is spectacular so definitely worth a visit.

At first sight, this hotel has it all going for it. Location, presentation and ambiance are all enticing and your expectations are high. Indeed the rooms are spotless and well serviced. Surprisingly, they do lack some provisions you would expect to be there in a prestigious hotel such as tea/coffee facilities, a/c and a well stocked minibar but that is not a major gripe. Nevertheless, it is very comfortable and the breakfast is very good indeed. However, when you looked behind the facade it was showing distinct signs of age and in need of refurbishment in many areas.
The main issue I have is that at all levels, the service was dire! I have never seen so much wrong with the way they serve their guests. Tardy, clueless, woefully understaffed and disorganised are just a few of thew words that come to mind. The bar service is a joke and everyone was waiting over 45 minutes for a drink. Manned by one barman without a clue where his drinks, utensils or cocktail ingredients were, forever searching and getting all his orders wrong or out of sequence, watched by three staff who did not engage with the guests.
The reception was a shambles and manned manifestly by undertrained and distracted staff. Queries took an eternity to sort out or process. Finally, dinner service. Whilst the food was acceptable, just, it was not great with more attention given to what someone believed was a fine dining presentation but in fact looked very naff and old fashioned and lacked flavour. The drinks and starter each took 45 minutes to arrive, the main course over an hour and we gave up on a desert. Staff standing around everywhere not interested in their clients merely added to our irritation.
To sum up; overpriced and underwhelming and clearly trading on its past reputation. There is something wrong here that needs fixing!

We got room 6311. Beautiful room with fantastic view! King bed was very comfortable, as were the linens and pillows. Plenty of room to set luggage. Small vestibule with hooks for jackets, Nespresso maker, small refrigerator. Closet for clothes and safe. Desk with chair and upholstered chairs with a small table looking over the view. Patio with chairs and table, but sadly, it was either too windy or too rainy to sit out there.
Great bathroom, large walk-in shower, bathtub, towel warmer, and separated toilet/bidet room. Sink counter had room for toiletries.
We are staying in the newly built Lago Moreno wing. The original hotel looks a bit tired and needing TLC. The walking of the hallways did feel comfortable after the 1st day. And loved looking at all the Georg Artwork on the walls. Cute gift shop with very friendly clerks. Front desk was very friendly and helpful.
Breakfast was huge with anything that you needed. And the views from the breakfast room were spectacular. Really enjoyed our 2 nights at Llao Llao.

A beautiful old fashioned ski lodge style resort in a lovely location. The views over Nahuel Huapi Lake from our bedroom (a Lake Studio room) were beautiful, and the views from the outdoor heated pool, the breakfast room and the bar in the Moreno wing over Moreno Lake towards the volcano were spectacular. We enjoyed the selection of delicious offerings at breakfast (particularly good omelettes) and some drinks and a sushi dinner in the Moreno wing bar. The staff in the Moreno bar were very friendly and efficient. In the main Lobby bar the surroundings are lovely, and we enjoyed a lunch and some pre dinner drinks there, although found the staff there to be a little bit distracted and the service slow (perhaps a little understaffed at busy times?). Our room was spacious (loved the 2 wardrobes with plenty of hangars), comfortable and had everything we needed. Decor is a little dated but fitted perfectly with the building style. Loved the pool area with the indoor and outdoor pool and seating. 2 small waters are provided free daily in the rooms and there are water refill stations in the hotel for those who have brought their own refillable bottles. We didn’t have our own refillable bottles and were a little shocked at the cost of bottled water in the room mini bar, US 9 dollars did seem very high even in a country where things are expensive. Easily resolved by walking a few minutes to the little kiosk on the main road and purchasing large bottles at less than half the price. The area around the hotel is beautiful- make sure to take advantage of the parkland on the doorstep!
