I stayed here a few years ago for a work retreat and had such a great time that I thought, “Hey, let’s bring my fiancé for a relaxing MLK weekend getaway!” Big mistake. Huge.
We checked in Saturday evening, and it was like we accidentally booked a room at a New York City train station during rush hour. There were people and screaming kids everywhere. Every couch, every chair, every corner of the lobby had been claimed like some post-apocalyptic survival camp. Honestly, have you ever seen The Walking Dead? Yeah, it was like that. Just replace zombies with pizza-covered children and tired parents who had clearly given up on life.
The indoor pool area? Oh, it wasn’t just a pool. It was Lord of the Flies: Water Edition. Kids were screeching, throwing balls, and diving into the pool like it was their first and last taste of freedom. Groups of adults were holding court at tables surrounded by mountains of pizza boxes, and the hot tub? That was its own form of torture. The people in there looked like they were plotting an escape.
We made it to our room, but the party didn’t stop there. The walls were so thin I could hear a guy in the hallway arguing on his phone like he was in the room with us. When he finally STFU, we were serenaded by our neighbors through the paper-thin door connecting our rooms. Every word, every laugh, every curse word came through loud and clear. It was like Netflix’s new reality show: Your Neighbors, Live and Unfiltered.
Oh, and bonus: Someone parked a stroller with a wailing baby in the hallway, ensuring the entire floor shared in the joy. The acoustics? Incredible. Whoever designed this hotel must’ve been like, “What if we amplified every noise in the hallway directly into the rooms? Genius!”
I begged the front desk for a room transfer, but surprise—fully booked. They did send security to investigate the “disturbances,” but let’s just say they weren’t exactly the Ghostbusters. Meanwhile, my blood pressure was skyrocketing. I came here for peace and relaxation, but this was basically Spring Break: Family Edition.
After two hours of this chaos, we tapped out. Packed our bags, cut our losses, and got the hell out of there. Honestly, I could feel my stress melting away the farther we drove from the hotel.
To be fair, the hotel itself is beautiful—nicely decorated, great amenities, and a super friendly staff. But unless you’re into eavesdropping on strangers, dodging hordes of kids, and waiting in lines that rival Disneyland’s, maybe skip this one on a holiday weekend.
So, if you’re looking for a “relaxing getaway” that feels more like a zombie apocalypse, the Hyatt Chesapeake is the place to be!

The hotel is beautiful and each staff member we encountered were more than kind. We found the food to be delicious in both dining areas. The beds were like sleeping on a cloud. The rooms were decorated with such class and we received a free upgrade to a water view room which was much appreciated. I will have to agree that this is probably not a place to go if kids bother you. Luckily, we arrived on Jan.3rd and most families had left...but there were a few and they were loud. We did hear a baby crying many times through the walls of our room but thankfully it stopped by 11pm. This hotel caters to families but if you time it right (off season) you should be able to escape the swarms of kiddos and their parents (who are the real problem). The hotel itself cannot be held responsible for parenting. Overall we would return, but not in the summer.

Just a heads up of what to expect the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day.
My husband and I came for a 2night visit starting the 26th to relax after a hectic December. What we found was this week is set up for families. What a great week if you are looking for a fun family get away. What we got was children running, screaming and crying in the hallways. The two dining areas overrun with children -let’s say not on their best behavior. Every quiet fireplace sitting area had large families in the space. The hot tub was filled with children from the time we woke up until bed. I got hit by a football in the head bc some boys were having a game in a larger hallway.
I’m happy for these families that hopefully had a good time. It was just unfortunate that we didn’t know that we wouldn’t be able to find an area away from the chaos.
