As native Rhode Islanders, my husband and I have been going to hotel Viking for years, and once they changed ownership the hotel has gone downhill fast the last few years. Our most recent stay here will unfortunately be our last. What once was a beautiful and iconic hotel with staff that ran it like a luxury hotel is now just a money grab with cheap fixtures. The front desk staff was extremely unprofessional. Didn’t even bother to greet guests as they walked by and just seemed bored. At one point in the evening they were playing solitaire at the desk. We checked in at 3, and the first thing we saw as we walked out of the elevator to our room was a pile of trash and food on a table. When we got back to the hotel at 8 pm, the trash was still there. We informed the front desk (who was playing solitaire), and they told us they would have someone clear it. It was still there an hour later. Our room was fine - but as everyone knows they now charge a resort fee on top of parking which is crazy and you have no special accommodations in the room. Not even waters were waiting for us. And we heard multiple people complaining there was nowhere to get ice. Our room also had a smoke detector out of order hanging from the ceiling… We went down to the pool the next day to find a pool that was cloudy and gross. The hot tub water was green. Judging by previous bad reviews here, this is a common problem they have done nothing to fix. I tried using the pool bathroom, and almost threw up from the sewage smell that was permeating the whole bathroom. No idea what is going on there. We stayed for winterfest, and they have always had a wonderful fire and ice bar. Now they don’t even have that anymore. The fires weren’t even lit - no charm whatsoever. Everything that used to be magical about this place now just feels cheap. It’s so sad since this was such a wonderful place that held many memories for us, but I wanted to leave this review to hopefully deter others from being disappointed. They have some highly rated bed and breakfast places in Newport we’ll be looking into next time. Maybe someday ownership will change again and the place can be restored to its former glory.
