Great Location and Spacious Room, But Service and Heating Issues

Hotel Altstadt Vienna has a lot of potential, but unfortunately, our stay was marred by several issues that impacted our experience.
Let’s start with the positives: the rooms are very spacious and well-appointed, offering a comfortable setting with an interesting contemporary decor. However, while the room itself was lovely, the bed was far too soft for our liking. If you prefer a firmer mattress, you might find it a bit uncomfortable.
The hotel is located in an apartment building, which gives it a unique charm, though it’s not exactly what you might expect from a traditional hotel setting. The location is good—while it’s outside of the main touristy areas, it’s still within walking distance of most attractions. So, for those who enjoy exploring a bit on foot, it’s well-placed.
Unfortunately, there were some issues that made our stay less enjoyable. The room was not properly heated, and one night the heating completely broke down, leaving us cold in the middle of winter. To make matters worse, the hot water also stopped working the following morning. We never received a proper apology from the staff, and we had to demand a discount, which was never offered proactively.
On a more positive note, the breakfast was very nice and served at a convenient time (until late in the morning, which was a bonus). The food was fresh, and there was a good selection. However, the breakfast room was a bit crowded, and the service was rather impersonal—there was no real warmth or attention from the staff who seemed overwhelmed.
Overall, while the hotel has some lovely features, the service and maintenance issues left a bad taste in our mouths. For the price, we expected a lot more in terms of both comfort and service. We won’t be rushing back, especially given the lack of accountability when things went wrong during our stay.

This hotel in Vienna is a gem. Excellent service from check in to our departure. Loved our large room, the wonderful breakfast and the fresh breads. The afternoon tea/coffee in the library was social and delightful. Hope to return one day soon.

Perfect Austrian hospitality

Perfect Austrian hospitality in a convenient location within walking distance of the Museum quarter. Our room was comfortable and quiet. We particularly enjoyed the afternoon tea (4-6pm) which was a welcome break from the cold weather and the pianist was a lovely addition.
Great and stylish design hotel stay in Vienna!

The Hotel Altstadt Vienna in the Neubau neighborhood is a delight. My partner and I had two stays; one three night stay followed by a two night stay a few nights later (with a visit to Salzburg in between). The hotel itself is beautiful, with luminous, stylish spaces, interesting art, sophisticated but whimsical decor and lighting, and immaculately clean. Service was prompt, friendly, and accommodating.
On our first stay, we were given the Library Suite, which is magical. A huge, bright room furnished comfortably and with a big wall of bookshelves along one side, plus beautiful furniture and lighting. I loved thumbing through all the books and sitting down to relaxing with a coffee and a random art book. How cool! On our second stay, we stayed in a standard room, which was still large enough, comfortable and had a sparkling crystal chandelier to add a touch of Viennese elegance. The rooms are furnished nicely with comfortable beds, Nespresso machines, mini-fridge, fluffy towels, nicely scented Austrian soaps and shampoos, and all the accessories you might need (you can ask for more - like a dental kit, if you need).
The breakfast is sumptuous and offered over a generous time period each morning (including ending at 11:30 on weekends, which is nice if you want to get up late, or work out in the morning, etc.). It offered a great spread of yogurt, charcuterie and fromagerie, salads, spreads, oatmeal, freshly prepared eggs and omelets, many interesting breads, Prosecco for a mimosa (even on weekdays, sure why not!), and on weekends a Bloody Mary bar (ooh la la!). Enjoying breakfast on the so-called "bel etage" floor was a delight with the sunny, east-facing rooms with high ceilings, wood floors, and beautiful furniture.
We stopped back in the "bel etage" for coffee and a glass of wine a couple of times and really enjoyed that. A nice, hushed, elegant clubby space to sit and exhale at the end of a busy day exploring Vienna.
We loved the area around the hotel. A 15 minute walk to Stephanplatz but also quiet and off the tourist beat. There are lots of nice restaurants and cafes around too - we especially loved Restaurant Wiener on Hermanngasse.
Overall, this hotel is terrific and totally in the spirit of what I have come to expect from stays at Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Note: My only quibble is that upon checkout, when handed the card reader to pay, I was presented with a "tip option" with the option to tip a percentage of the value of my stay. This is tacky and was unexpected. Given the nightly rate at this hotel, it is also patently uncalled for (and for this I have deducted a star from my review).
