We checked in Friday 1/10/25 and everyday all day pickle courts are going from 8am-10pm with full lights. But, the problem is courts are operated by an outside Vendor who runs tournaments. They set up at 7am and run til 10pm. That means blaring microphone, “park here not there”, very loud music, and the announcer shouting all day and night. Literally, we have 2 beautiful sliders with screens shut, AC on and tv blaring - hardly drowned the noise. If you are coming to HI to sit outside lanai or anywhere on property and enjoy peace quiet, the stars - don’t come here. Absolutely sucks. Management here has zero control over the courts located in the property so your stuck with all the commotion and noise til 10pm everyday, all day.

My husband and I just stayed at the Holua resort at Mauna Loa for one week. In fact, I am sitting at the Kona airport right now waiting to board my plane to go back to the mainland. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The resort is beautiful and our one bedroom unit was very clean and spacious. If you don’t have a car with you it makes it very difficult to get around so I would advise that you stay right down the middle old Kona On Ali’i Drive if you’re not going to rent a car. We were within a 15 minute drive to everywhere local that we wanted to go so the location was perfect. We also enjoy walking and playing pickleball in the mornings so it was nice to get up and take a nice long walk or to go over to the courts to play pickleball before going out for the day’s adventure.. Everybody was very very friendly at the Holua paddle and racquet center. If you want to play pickleball keep in mind that you can buy a punchcard and it’s $10 per session. The people playing at the Courts every morning for open play are half regulars and half visitors so it’s a nice mix. There’s a variety of different skill levels too but I would say most people are around 3.5 If you buy a punchcard online you can get a discount per session. The punchcard is transferable so I just bought one punch card and my husband and I shared it. ($60 for 7 sessions)
Keep in mind that there is no bar, no continental breakfast, no café, no social gathering place on the grounds other than six different pools spread out throughout the property. If you want to have a social gathering you could either meet at one of the pools, meet at the courts, or you could go over next-door to the Outrigger.
There is free secure parking.

While this is a lovely resort, very few of the rooms have an ocean view. It has a residential feel, with 6, 8, or 12 units in each of the 20 or so buildings. Some of the water features were not working on our most recent visit, but that is not a major detraction. Our unit was clean and comfortable, showing only slight signs of wear. Unlike many Wyndham properties, staff did not repeatedly "offer" an owner update. Maybe they are learning how bad it is to annoy owners!
Others have noted that this is not an ocean-front property, but it is just a short walk to Keauhau Bay, which has public access and which my wife and I found fine for snorkeling. (We are both unathletic seniors. We take our own mask, fins, snorkel, and flotation.) We saw at least eight species of fish. It is also a short drive to Kahalu'u Beach Park (to the north) or to Honaunau (Two Step) (to the south), both of which offer good snorkeling, and it is just a mile or so from a shopping center with a good grocery store, drug store, and several good restaurants. We think Holua Resort is a great place to base a Kona Coast vacation.

The pictures attached are all from Building 20/130 except for the patio furniture which was found in unit 134. We love the Holua Resort and we especially love Building 20/134 but we had to stay in unit 130 for two nights and couldn't believe the difference. Unit 130 was dirty and in much disrepair. Fortunately we were able to move after two nights into our favorite unit 134. This unit was perfect except for the wicker patio furniture which should be replaced since most the wicker is broken and coming unraveled.
Other than that, the Holua Resort is amazing. It is beautiful, quiet (unless your unit is near the tennis and pickle ball courts and you don't mind listening to balls bouncing all day) and well maintained. The maintenance crew is constantly attending to the grounds and keeping everything up to par.
The units are well-kept and clean (unit 130 not included). They are spacious and bright and the kitchen is stocked with everything you need to prepare meals (not food). We especially love the washer and dryer located right inside each unit.
We love coming here and will keep coming back.
The resort is in a great location, within walking distance of Keauhou Bay and a few short miles from Kailua Village. Three minutes away from the best snorkeling sight on the Big Island...Kahalu'u Beach Park.
The pictures on the website of the resort are accurate. It is that beautiful!
I think some of the units are going to be renovated in 2026. I hope they replace the vanities and toilets with the higher versions when they do the renovations. That would be a huge improvement.
