PROS: the ocean view is amazing and the rooms in the ocean wing are big and very nice. The beds are comfy and the entire building seems to be well cared for. It was pretty easy and inexpensive to get here from the airport with a taxi. The hotel staff is polite and pleasant, very welcoming, especially the lady that helped us check in.
CONS: the restaurant are more on the expensive side and the staff doesn’t speak English or doesn’t seem to understand even basic sentences.
The worst part for us was an incident our very first day: we were stopped while trying to get into the pool because my husband and I both have tattoos and we were told we needed to either cover them or stay out of public spaces (the resort’s beach, the pool and the restaurants).
We found a workaround by going to the public beach nearby, but that means we don’t have access to the resort’s utilities like a bed or an umbrella on the beach. To use the pool we had to cover most of our legs and arms.
This stay was booked for us by a travel agency, so we didn’t know about this rule and while I get that there is stigma in Japan around tattoos, I also know that during our three-week trip to Japan this was the only instance where they have caused an issue for us. We didn’t have issues even at a traditional onsen. Overall, it’s 2024 and foreigners have tattoos, so I find this rule outdated. At the very least, it should be communicated more clearly when booking the room from foreigners.
I’m afraid I cannot recommend the stay to people outside of Japan and I would not book again.

Fantastic location on what is possibly the best beach on the island!
Beautiful and huge gardens to the front and especially the rear of the hotel.
The Coral wing superior twin was quite large and clean and everything worked fine. It had a wonderful view of the turquoise sea!!
The bar/cafe food and drinks were expensive but the ambience was brilliant, so enjoyable.
It’s a huge hotel, so quite relaxing to walk around.
Staff mostly friendly, if not so well trained.
However, you couldn’t help thinking that the sole objective of the hotel was to extract as much cash as possible from every guest with the minimum effort!
The rooms are top price, but there was no welcome drink and they even wanted rent to use putters on the putting green!! A room leaflet said they also wanted rent to borrow a corkscrew!! That must be a first!! Unique!!
Room … Twin beds different length and shape, mattresses very hard, no balcony chairs, no towel hooks in the bathroom, walk mounted television off centre, and although they had satellite channels, for some inexplicable reason all the non Japanese channels were blocked off, so no international news or movies!! Is that unique in the world??!! I’ve never experienced it anywhere else, even in Japan!!
The really great hibiscus bath salts given on the first night were not replaced on any of our subsequent nights until requested!!!! Why not??!!
Dining … Nirai Kanai was kept freezing cold!! It took long arguments with staff to be permitted to dine at tables on the warmer outside terrace. Guest’s wishes should be happily accommodated!! Food was ok/average,
There were no them nights or entertainment, so rather basic and boring …. Three stars??
I canceled my Barbecue reservation, because I was told that although the food was ok, it was very expensive but very little and guests had to cook their own food at their table, so not a real barbecue!!
There are many guest rooms, but very few facilities. No fitness centre, no table tennis, no pool/ snooker, no darts, no library!! The children’s facility room was empty!!
At night, the gardens had a few lights but were really quite dark!! They need to be lit with beautiful lighting so that guests can enjoy a walk in safety!!
My son’s family room was given two sets of towels for his family with the explanation that they match the number of beds, and not the number in the family!!! In a “family” room!!!
The man at the leisure desk said he’d never heard of snorkelling tours even though they’re advertised in the hotel’s website!!
Some hard working friendly staff, but some strange hotel staff guidance!!

One of the nicest hotels on Miyakojima...and with great views (ocean and Kurima bridge)
Good communication with Takagi san before booking to find out about the status of renovations and views etc.
Room in the Coral Wing was really big..as was the bathroom..and the resort has a tropical feeling about it and all the public areas /elevators are clean and smell good.
The resort has a number of restaurants to choose from (the Shangri la has just been refurbished and re opened on December 27th) We ate at the Japanese restaurant on the second night.Food quality was good but the portions were on the small side and the price was a little high.
A visit in winter is all about the ocean views as a lot of the resort is closed down. The swimming pools were closed (even though it was 26 degrees when we arrived on December 25th) and you ll be told that the beach is closed.
There s a small convenience store and souvenir shops in the resort.
There is a lot of car parking space and this is vital as the closest convenience store (Family Mart) ,post office and place to eat is about 1 kilometer away.Apparently there is an airport shuttle that can be pre booked.
It’s really easy to drive around the islands and there were a number of other good quality hotels in the south of the island or on the western side of Irabu island.
All in all I would stay at The Tokyu resort again if the price was right and the pools and beach were open and the water sports were available.

Overall it was an excellent stay – would absolutely recommend staying here, and we will stay here again when we return to Miyakojima. Great location, food, and pool beach. Much prefer over Okinawa main island area as it’s less crowded and easy to get around.
Pros:
Pool – nice there are 2 pools. A kids’ pool, it is right next to the larger pool, but often the children are in the large pool, too. Lots of shade. We went in the middle of June, so not crowded and could always find a chair.
Beach – beautiful beach, although a significant area of the beach, the convenient area that is right next to pool, was under construction so we didn’t get to enjoy that area. But the other area of the beach was a short walk from beach and had lounge chairs with umbrellas set up for guests’ use.
Restaurants – We had breakfast at the Shangri-La every morning, and it was impressive. A wonderful variety of different food. I was never disappointed. We ate dinner at 3 of the other restaurants. The restaurant pool side, Moon Shell, we had had lunch by the pool, nice menu. The Tappanyaki Restaurant was very good, would recommend during your stay. The Seaside Garden/Barbeque was ok. It was very hot in the restaurant, so difficult to enjoy while the hot grill was right in front of you.
Room: was spacious, massive shower/tub area. Plenty of room. There was a free smart phone to use, but since instructions were in Japanese, we didn’t fully understand were it could be used. There was a mini-fridge we used for personal use. 2 free bottles of water every day. The balcony was nice overlooking the pool, but no chairs to sit outside.
Location – there was a free shuttle to take you to the tropical gardens. To get to the “Aeon town” area, it was about ¥2,000 for taxi. Btw – the BEST Ramen restaurant is in the Aeon town area, next to Kagami restaurant and in the building next to the Italian restaurant. The name of the restaurant only shows in Japanese.
Cons:
Pool: No pool-side service. It’s not like the Caribbean / Hawaii where there are servers to order drinks and food.
Room: Beds were quite firm and no King size beds – 2 twin beds.
Limited English speaking at desk.

First of all - the location and Miyakojima itself is absolutely stunning. The most beautiful place I have ever been! The private beach has fine white sand and is like paradise! We loved being able to float around on the inflatable rubber rings provided by the hotel. The swimming pools were also lovely.
We were greeted by a kind and professional receptionist. She made a huge effort to make us welcome and we were grateful how accommodating she was considering we can't speak a work of Japanese! Thank you so much for this.
We were, however, extremely disappointed when we arrived at our room. The first impression was an awful, stale smoke smell. Considering we had requested a non smoking room we were very surprised by this. The room was also very dated with really quite depressing decor - it was a horrible room. We do not enjoy complaining so were very reluctant to do so but we felt so disappointed given this was the hotel we had been most looking forward to during our stay in Japan. We initially tried to mask the smell by spraying room deodoriser but with no use I phoned reception but a man abruptly advised there were no other rooms available. We were surprised at this considering the size of the property so went to reception to speak to the lady who greeted us on arrival. She was extremely apologetic and immediately offered us another room. This room was really lovely and a lot more modern with a great view. We were so grateful for this room change as it completely made our stay.
Had we been left in the first room it would have been a very different story as we just couldn't believe how the most expensive hotel room we had booked during our stay in Japan was such a let down! We had stayed in other 3* hotel rooms which were half the price and had been far nicer than this first room.
All in all we had a lovely stay, once these issues had been rectified but unfortunately I don't think I would stay in this hotel next time we visit Miyakojima simply down to the possibility of being allocated one of the older style dated rooms - these definitely are in need of an upgrade and I really hope this happens soon! This could be a truly amazing place.

Flinstones go to Miyakojima

Yabadabadoooo... The hotels’ stone pillars remind me of Fred Flintstones hometown of Bedrock sans the orchids and white sand beaches. Although, I don’t believe Wilma made fresh seaweed salad and smoked fish on an island sandwiched between the Philippine and East China Seas.
Back to the hotel... As English only speakers we were delighted to be welcomed and assisted by Lars. His clear English helped us sort out a wrinkle in our reservation. The wrinkle in our reservation left us with smoking room options. Being non-smokers and sensitive to stale cigarette smoke, we previewed several rooms with Lars before finding the freshest smelling room. His hospitality went beyond the hotel grounds when he took us to a nearby international ATM. Up to that point we were getting anxious about not being able to access yen via Visa. He alone is worth a 5 star rating.
The hotel’s architecture is affectionately 1960’s. Each room has a view of the gardens, ocean, or pool. Thanks to Lars, we were fortunate to have a room on the 6th floor which was also the highest. This gave us a panoramic view of Irabu Island, ocean, and manicured landscapes. The rooms are clean, quiet, and comfortable. The balcony let us leave the door open and hear the voices of nature.
The buffet breakfast is included with an optional buffet dinner or bar for evening dining. Similar to most resort hotels is the western and Japanese style cuisines. We opt for the traditional Japanese and in this case a third option of Okinawa is offered. We are told Okinawa cuisine is spicer although we have yet to notice the distinction. The staff are friendly and helpful with plenty of choices to get you through the morning. My faves were the seaweed salad, fish, and soups.
The hotel is family friendly with plenty of pool toys and kid sized utensils and plates for the buffet.
Come here if want to relax, enjoy beach walks/runs and see rural Japan. It was a great place to decompress and acclimate after our 15 hour flight from the U.S.

We had a lovely large room with a balcony overlooking the beautiful ocean. The staff was very helpful. We arrived at the airport and didn't realize the hotel had a shuttle, I saw their sign and they accommodated us.
We had breakfast with our room and it was a very good buffet with both western and Japanese options. We ate most of our meals at the resort as there aren't many options if you don't have a car.
The pool had a lifeguard and was pleasant with many families making it a cheerful place. The beach is one of the most beautiful white sand beaches I have ever seen. The water was shallow and you can lay at the edge of the shore and let the water wash over you.

After two weeks with a busy itinerary on mainland Japan, we enjoyed five nights in this excellent resort. Welcome reception by staff was splendid and professional. We had a marvellous stay, and were extremely satisfied with the service and the facilities and picturesque surroundings. Our suite was clean and had high standard with comfortable beds and good space. The room (as well as bath) had 180 degrees view to the horizon and the bay overlooking Kurima Island from where we witnessed some incredible sunsets. We truly miss relaxing with a book under a sun umbrella at Yonaha Maehama beach, occasionally taking a swim in the crystal clear Pacific sea, playing a game of tennis or jogging on the beach. As we were new to the island, the hotel was very helpful in advance answering our enquiries concerning our arrival and activities in Miyakojima. The only facility we missed at the resort was a gym, but this did not affect our overall satisfaction of our stay. One day, we will definitely come back to this hidden gem of an island and hotel.

We spent three nights here in late October and took a room on the top floor which was clean, of a good size for Japan, and had a stunning view of the ocean. We were allowed to check in early. A typhoon had passed to the south the previous day so we had four days of sunshine.
Maehama beach really does rival beaches in the Bahamas, Maldives and Philippines. Better than any I've seen on Hawaii, Bali or in Thailand. Clear water laps a powder white sand beach. Fish swim around you a few feet from the shore.
Service is friendly and attentive. Food in the restaurants is good, although the all day dining cafe's selection is limited.
Renting a car is recommended. It takes about twenty minutes from the airport to the resort. It is also useful for driving round the island and visiting adjacent islands connected by bridge. Miyakojima offers plenty of beautiful sights and beaches. Good for photographers, divers and those who just want to relax. A direct flight from Haneda makes this an easy destination for Tokyo residents.

The hotel is pretty nice with excellent facilities and a great beach. But...foreigners need to pay upfront as they had a bad experience with one foreign customer once.....as explained to us by the friendly front staff. And it does not matter if the foreigner lives in Japan or not, being a foreigner is enough to receive a special treatment; pay upfront, have a staff member check up on you to make sure you understand that you need to check out in a few hours, get three confirmations when booking a massage....
A lot of special attention, even though we did not ask for it:(
Dear Tokyo Management, it is 2016....get used to it that your hotel might be visited by foreigners every now and then...or will your policy change to banning them all together?

The beach was even prettier in person than the pictures. Amazing sunsets! Service was excellent and it was everything we thought it would be. They have a couple people on staff specifically for english speakers which was nice.
Our only problem was that everything was considerably overpriced. The food, drinks, snacks, sunscreen, souvenirs, etc. For example, 6 beers in the hotel store was 1700 yen, 6 beers at the grocery store was 1000 yen. I was expecting a hotel mark up, but 70% is a price gouge. The cheapest dinner? 4800 yen a person at the bbq place where you cook your own food! They also don't do any kind of food/drink service on the beach. Maybe this is a Japanese thing? I know there are high standards for food sanitation, but they didn't even staff a poolside bar.
If you stay here I highly recommend renting a car so you can access reasonably priced food and drink.
