Good Base for exploring San Francisco!
Good spot for exploring San Francisco. Close to Union Square and Nob Hill and thankfully far enough away from the Tenderloin. It felt like a safe area and was quiet as it was set back from things. Was probably quite quirky when it was done but is now a bit...

Was probably quite quirky when it was done but is now a bit shabby. However, the room was large and clean.

Quaint and welcoming hotel with San Francisco charm.

The staff were very welcoming and helpful. This is a bed and breakfast style hotel. The breakfast was not elaborate, but was quite sufficient to start our day. It’s an old building with charm and a very convenient location close to Chinatown and the cable cars. We took a taxi to the wharf area. Hotel staff called for the taxi and it was there within a few minutes. We participated in the late afternoon complimentary wine event. We had fun and enjoyed speaking with the staff. Our room was in the front of the hotel, and there was a bit of noise from the street early in the mornings. But the room was very comfortable with plenty of space. There is an old-style elevator that we did use to transport our luggage, but the stairs were convenient for daily use. Old, quaint, but fairly recently remodeled - it definitely added to our experience of visiting San Francisco.

The central location was good but the San Francisco hills were everywhere around it, making it challenging for the not so young to navigate around.

When I use the term "quirky", I mean it in its most eccentric and idiosyncratic meaning. If you're used to standard hotels, you might find the White Swan Inn to be unusual. We enjoy finding the unconventional.
Upon arrival, the front desk staff was helpful. We ended up in a read room, probably quieter than one facing the street, but it's a major city, there is going to be street noise.
The room was spacious and clean with a fridge and coffee maker in the room.
We took advantage of the evening wine and cheese. Breakfast was great as well. We found it interesting that most of the guests were European. Not sure why, I just though it peculiar.
We stayed on a weekend when most of the Bay Area was around 100 degrees, but San Francisco is always cooler and we had no need for air conditioning, so that is not a worry.
Valet parking is expensive, but probably no higher than any other downtown hotel.
There are many diners and hotels in the neighborhood, including Del Popolo, the Neopolitan pizza restaurant next door.

It is as advertised -- a bit quirky but comfortable, somewhat European in age and feel, a responsive staff, and decent location on lower Nob (depending, of course, on what you want to see or do). We arrived from SFO well before check in but they accommodated us without an extra fee. That was nice! Room was a junior suite with gas fireplace, both a bathroom and a walk-in vanity/closet area with sink. Dated but clean, nothing in look remotely smacking of, say, a chain hotel. Comfortable bed and we slept pretty well ( 2 nights). Only hiccup, as others have mentioned, is the restaurant located immediately below and the sounds of diners and related noise wafting up (even with windows closed) from about 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. We only heard the first part because we were out every night and the noise had abated by the time we came back. Cable car stop not too far. Union Square, for what it's worth, a few blocks in one direction, the top of Nob a couple in the other. We walked easily through Chinatown and to the North Beach area and even up to Coit Tower and back.
We did not take advantage of the evening wine tasting. The breakfast was adequate for us -- we don't need a big varied hot breakfast -- but pretty humdrum. But how can you complain -- it's complimentary. Other guests we encountered were a varied lot of seniors and couples and young adult travelers, and English is not the only language you will hear. All in all, we had a good stay and would recommend the White Swan for travelers who want a typical kind of old style SF experience. Oh....and I do have to say because of all the recent stories about SF crime, etc., that the location felt perfectly secure and we encountered zero urban hassle of any kind wherever we went.

Had a great stay at the White Swan Inn. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was very clean and comfortable. The fireplace was great, as the weather was a bit cold in San Francisco given we were there in winter. Every day the staff replenished our fridge with complimentary water and soft drinks. Breakfast was great and included bread, pastries, yogurt, fruit and cereal. The hotel is conveniently located with lots of public transport options available and walking distance from Union Square and Chinatown.
