My girlfriend and I were extremely disappointed with how we were treated this weekend at the Pfister Hotel.
Growing up coming to Milwaukee with my Dad/Mom Marquette alumni was always a memorable time. They had many stories of going to formal events at the Pfister, which made me think it would be a sound choice for a weekend getaway from Chicago. We were celebrating our anniversary and stayed from Friday to Sunday.
Upon arrival Friday afternoon, we were immediately told by Edward that our King Tower room was not available and would have to wait. I asked what the wait would be for that room, and was never given a time as he was clicking on the computer saying just a second. We then politely asked for some insight on what the difference was between the rooms and he said that the old tower was newly renovated. With a dinner reservation at 6:30, we had no time to wait and took the suite in the old hotel.
Walking into the suite it was odd, a majority of the lamps and power strips were unplugged, and although the room was clearly renovated you can tell it was renovated recently with minimal thought to functionality. The detail that was the worst is the only bathroom outlet being behind the hand towels and not visible. The auto led lights under the furniture also were cheap and not routed direct to electrical.
Working past that, our first night was okay but the HVAC was a small problem. We woke up with the room being 75 (It was set to 70) that first morning, but had plans in the town during the day so left it hoping it would adjust by the time we got back to get ready for dinner.
When we got back at about 4pm Saturday it was 80 in the room. I immediately called concierge and an engineer was sent up.
Because we were tied up and needed to be present in the room with the engineer there, my girlfriend wanted a quick snack before we went back out for the evening so we called room service. After waiting 5 minutes on the line for in room dining, I called back concierge and let them know of this problem. Briana said sorry about that, and that she would have the manager of in room dining/kitchen call our room line in the next minute. After 10 minutes with no call back we were frustrated, so walked down to the lobby to talk with Briana directly to where she apologized and put the problem on her colleague in front of us. We ended up going out of the hotel for a snack to come back to the room with still no fix to the heat.
Coming back with no fix was disappointing , I was expecting a note from the engineer or a message on the phone from concierge. Neither were there, so I called back concierge to get it closed out because we were leaving shortly for plans. After a few tries, no one picked up! I then walked down to the lobby again to talk to Briana and let her know we still have had no closure to our HVAC working in room and that none of the phones routed to the desk are working. At this point, all these issues and me having to facilitate the problem resolution was childish. I kept being offered a bottle of Champaign to the room when I just wanted some clarity of when this could be fixed so we could head out.
The engineer eventually came back before we went out and let us know the HVAC should not get as hot as it did before but if it did that we could open a window. He also offered a fan. The rest of our stay the Heat did not work and after cooling to about 73, we kept the windows closed and let the insulation do the rest over the next 12 hours we were there.
Maybe we caught all of their problems this weekend, but just a heads up to anyone who might be comparing The Pfister to other hotels in the area…it’s historic beauty is great, but it’s operation needs work, and renovations are a facade.

Room was clean and the staff was excellent to work with! Meichi was incredibly helpful upon check in and followed up throughout our stay. The architecture is beautiful. The walls between rooms are a bit thin however and we were able to hear our neighbors and their kids as well as people we believe were across the hall. It was a Saturday night so it was understandable but likely our only down point during the stay.

Wonderful, classic stay! We had heard about the Pfister being special. Our experience was everything anticipated and more. The history, the amazing fine details and uplifting atmosphere, the highly professional staff, and the overall culture is quite the impression! We are sharing with others about the Pfister Hotel.
Lovely for a Romantic Stay
Keke was a blessing who welcomed us warmly, and we had a lovely vacation filled with elegance and fine dining. The chocolate cake was not to be missed. The hotel has wonderful period details you don't see anymore. The gym and pool are great amenities as well.

The best hotel experience we have ever had in our 62 years of life. Felt like a vintage coat that is warm and still in style. We booked a room in the old part of the hotel, absolutely gorgeous. Not only were we able to check in super early for no charge, they upgraded us to a suite that came with exclusive club lounge access. We drove and booked 2 days at the self park. Champagne at check in, at the spa for the ultimate pedicure, shout out to Lavinia, champagne at check out. We stayed for 2 nights and had so much fun we hardly left the property, our car for sure didn’t. Drinks at the lobby bar, breakfast at the club, lunch at the cafe, and fancy dinner at the Mason Street Grill. The view from the pool on the top of the tower were stunning at night. Likewise for breakfast at the club. Sadly we never made it to the night club at the top of the tower but chose the comfy sofa and live jazz in the restaurant bar our final night. We are seasoned domestic travelers who like exploring vintage hotels in cities across the US and rarely stay the same place twice. We are definitely going back to the Pfister where every employee we saw greeted us when we passed them in the halls. Jack at the front desk checked us out and made sure we wouldn’t owe any extra at the self park because we were going to some museums and walking tours our last day.

This hotel built in 1893 with the majestic architecture of an old-world grand hotel has been updated to modern 1st class standards, and exceptionally maintained. See the pictures supplied by other TA reviewers, they are accurate. The entire hotel, including halls, salons, and rooms is filled beautiful artwork of paintings, and sculpture. The rooms are what you would expect in a 5-star hotel, and are spotless. We decided to stay here on a 2-day package, and it ranks right up there with our best experiences - and we have a lot to compere with. Now, it is more expensive than the nearby business-class chain hotels (+100 more), but there are times when you just need to treat yourself to something special.

I’ve always wanted to stay at the Pfister, but living just 10 minutes away, it never quite felt necessary. I’ve always admired the hotel’s rich history and how beautifully it’s been preserved, so we finally decided to treat ourselves to a little staycation. And we’re so glad we did!
We checked in a little after 3pm on Friday. There was a small line since many guests were arriving around the same time, but the process moved quickly, and we were welcomed with a glass of champagne, such a nice touch! We chose to stay in the historic section of the hotel, and it did not disappoint.
Our room was easy to find and incredibly spacious. It’s been remodeled recently and looks stunning—modern touches that still honor the hotel’s historic charm. I especially appreciated the automatic lights in the bathroom and nightstands, and the tapestry above the bed showcasing iconic Milwaukee buildings was a thoughtful detail. The TV was set to the hotel’s own channel, looping highlights of its amenities and a short film about its history. We actually sat and watched the whole thing—it was so well done!
Before dinner, we visited Blu, one of our favorite spots for a drink and light bite. The cheese plate was perfect, and the panoramic views of the city—visible even from the restroom, are simply unbeatable. We also popped by the pool to take a look; it’s a great size and offers more beautiful views. While exploring the hotel, we wandered through the ballrooms being set up for Easter brunch and a wedding, which was fun to see. Everywhere we turned, there were little nods to the Pfister’s history, it felt like a museum and hotel all in one.
The staff was warm and welcoming throughout our stay. We truly loved the experience and would absolutely stay again. The location is right in the heart of downtown, making it easy to get anywhere, and parking was a breeze. A perfect city getaway!
