This is our second visit to Monterey, on our way to Big Sur for a retreat at the Esalen Center. Because of our first experience, we chose to stay at the Spindrift Inn again…for a total of three nights (one on our way to Esalen, and two nights prior to flying home). This hotel is remarkable! The accommodations are superb…right down to the bay window with binoculars to watch the sea otters playing in the ocean (my favorite activity)! The staff are incredible! When we checked out the first night, they asked if we had any requests for our returning stay. They provided chamomile tea, extra bedding, and even a couple designer chocolates with a handwritten “Welcome Back” note in our room. I highly recommend this Inn for anyone wanting a special experience.

This seemed like a nice charming little hotel. But it’s just an old derelict shack. At check in they inform you there’s a hidden $40 PER NIGHT valet parking fee. There is zero parking available at this hotel. Only valet to the lot down the street. Lobby is small and there is nowhere to set out or eat breakfast (it’s just cereal) so you have to tell them which of 3 cereals you want the night before and what time you want someone leaving it outside your door so you can eat it in your room. The rooms are small and stuffy. There is no air conditioning. The whole place smells like rotting fish. You can open the windows but much more rotting fish smell. Bathroom is moldy because maintenance has disconnected the exhaust fan and black mold is growing inside it. Tons or street noise with windows closed , more with windows open. There is a ceiling fan but it makes a clacking sound all night. The plumbing is loud and the walls generally roar any time anyone in the building flushes a toilet. Half the bathroom tiles are cracked and damaged. The toilet paper is the frustratingly thin and coarse (I would literally have brought my own if I had expected this level of quality). There are random sharp screws sticking out of various surfaces. I’m not an obsessively clean person. But this is not the sort of place I want to eat my breakfast cereal. But this place is about as sanitary as a neglected basement. I feel like I need a shower after leaving this hotel.

What a special hotel/inn. We spent 6 nights here over Christmas and used the valet parking for our car. Each day we had an activity planned- the location was perfect. A clean and well appointed room with fireplace and comfy chairs. Someone put a lot of thought on how to best utilize the room and it was tasteful and cozy. The small breakfast each morning in our room was a very nice touch. The best part was the view right from the bay window with seat to watch all kinds of sea life and listen to the waves crash in.

The room itself was comfortable and had a wonderful cosy feeling to it. There was a fan provided which kept us nice and cool. We will definitely come and stay again when we visit Monterey, the hotel is in a great location, the staff are all really helpful and the room was wonderful.

This is a very nice hotel in a great location with 1 major issue on the second floor rooms facing cannery row and maybe not so important to some others. I did fill out a survey for the hotel but never heard back so I thought I would post my review to the hotel here.
When I called to make the reservation the hotel never told us that the rooms do not have AC. When we arrived they let us know that the room does not have AC but there is a fan and you can leave the window open.
We thought ok we can do that considering the cool evenings. When we arrived in the room which was a nice clean room with a great view from the second floor. There were no windows but the room had french doors which meant that we would have to leave the doors open in order to keep the room cool which we was not acceptable and a safety issue. At the front desk the word window was mentioned twice not door. We considered staying and leaving to door open while we were awake to cool the room off then close them when we went to bed. That's when the next problem came up. The 2 French doors did not lock closed. You could pull the doors open from the outside or push them open form the inside. Either way the doors did not lock securely. A complete safety hazard to us. Called the front desk and they said that maintenance would come up and take a look. The maintenance person was not in the room more than 30 seconds and agreed the doors could not be securely locked without even looking at them. He told us he has notified the staff that the doors on this floor do not lock securely multiple times but nothing had been done.
I called the front desk and requested a refund and let them know we would not be staying there. They let us know that they would refund our money in full. We had to pack everything up again and find another room which cost us about $100 more because of the last minute trying to find a room. After all of this we are extremely disappointed at the hotel and staff for 1 not advising us the room did not have AC and putting us in a room where you could access the room just by pulling the doors open. Again I do not expect to get a response from your hotel because most of these questionnaires seem to go unanswered. If I was just my fiance staying there and I found out she was put into a room you could not secure I would have immediately told her to leave. The safety and comfort of your guests should be top priority on your list. Clearly this is not the case of your hotel. It is a very nice hotel and the staff was friendly but that is where our positive experience ended. I will wait to get a response before posting this review online. I am not looking for anything except to try to prevent any other guests going through the same negative experience we had.
Regards,

I was really looking forward to our stay here during our 2 week road trip and incredibly disappointed that we were unable to get an ocean view.
Rooms need better cleaning. Breakfast is small and while it's stated as 'complimentary' you are paying for it in your fee.
You can hear a lot of noise from people above you and there is no air conditioning.
There are better places to stay with nicer reception staff. Disappointing all round really.

A lovely 55th Anniversary stay at Spindrift

We had reservations in Yosemite to celebrate our 55th anniversary, but with the forecast for temperatures over 100 degrees, we decided to find somewhere else to go instead (no AC in the rooms). After some research we decided on Monterey, which was about the same driving distance from our house. Thanks to TripAdvisor we then discovered the Spindrift. We chose Spindrift based on reviews on TripAdvisor.
We went on-line and made a reservation for four nights, and then later we decided we wanted to upgrade our room. We called Spindrift a couple of times and got great advice from the friendly employees. We ended up getting the top floor corner room that we wanted, #407
Our stay was fantastic. We left our car with the valet and walked everywhere (got in lots of steps!)
Food: Happy hour at El Torito, dinners at Louie Linguine’s, Fish Hopper (2) and Chart House, lunch at Bubba Gump and Old Fisherman’s Grotto, and breakfast/brunch at Schooners. And yes, I did gain about 4 lbs!
Activities: Aquarium, Old Fisherman’s Wharf and a lot of window shopping.
Pros: Very convenient location, history of Cannery Row and McAbee beach, daily light breakfast, views, windows that open, fireplace, great bed and pillows, window seats, friendly staff and the continual sound of gulls.
Cons: We did think it was a little pricey, but we will come back. Next time we will avoid a weekend as the prices really skyrocket then. Valet parking is also pricey, but it was convenient. We could have parked in a public lot a few blocks away for much cheaper. I guess it’s not really a negative, but based on reviews we were looking forward to the view from the roof, but it is now closed. And we also thought (again from reviews and pics) there were actual wood fireplaces, but no longer. However the gas fireplace was a great replacement.

Diana at the front desk was INCREDIBLE! We arrived late in the evening to the hotel, had a wrong reservation date (our mistake) and needed to park our car overnight. She accommodated us with no hesitation, in an ocean side view room that was beyond our expectations. Her kind and friendly demeanor was so refreshing and eased us into the most comfortable stay throughout our trip. The breakfast was delivered to our preferred order, the room was spotless, the view was spectacular (a little morning fog passed) and the rest of the hotel staff was just as helpful. Overall, we will highly recommend the Spindrift Inn to anyone seeking a place to stay in Monterey.

Extraordinary ~ the view from our room was exceptional ~ It was just divine to hear the gentle sounds of the sea all evening long. After a day of exploring the rugged coastline it was nice to come back to the hotel to enjoy some wine & cheese. Such a quaint and sleepy little town. The room was very comfortable. The bathroom was all marble. Loved that the shower was separate from the bathtub. A very nice touch was breakfast served to our room every morning, but if your a real hearty eater & love heavy food choices like bacon and sausage you won't get that option. We loved the light breakfast of fresh fruit, hard boiled egg, small pastries, yogurt and coffee..perfect.

Very convenient location. You never have to retrieve your car to explore. You can walk to the aquarium, rent a bike, kayak, or surrey right in front of the hotel. Sea otters are visible from room windows. Rooms are “refreshed” but other areas could use some sprucing up-the elevator floor and walls are ancient and some window panes in our corner room-3rd floor-are missing and the double sided tape is jut sticking there…but Don’t let that deter you. The views and convenience make it ok. Hopefully these issues will be addressed. The staff was friendly and helpful.

Had a wonderful stay here for three nights. Ocean view room. The only thing that stops me giving it 5 stars was the poor standard of maintenance of the windows and shower. The room was beautifully furnished with a very comfortable bed and armchairs.
