Great hotel in San Ignacio
An extremely comfortable hotel with very friendly staff.
The restaurant was excellent with great cooked breakfasts and an excellent lunch and dinner menu.
The pool area is very relaxing and well maintained with lots of shaded spaces available.

In advance of returning for a couple of weeks to Ambergris Caye again this year, we decided to initially spend 3 days on Belize’s mainland to be in closer proximity to several highly rated outdoor activities, i.e. cave explorations, Mayan sites, zip-lining. In short, we had hoped for extraordinary/memorable experiences… which were all made possible with the exceptionally knowledgeable and helpful staff at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel.
From the initial booking for our stay it was easy to also reserve not only the recommended activities, but too, the pick-up at the airport and the return to Belize City… which I initially thought was a splurge, however realize now in retrospect was a made extra pleasant and educational by our very competent and knowledgeable driver… a staff member of the hotel who was one of the many (w/out exception) kind and hospitable employees that made for a memorable stay; including and not be missed breakfasts and dinners at their Running Water Restaurant… all meals prepared and served by a team knowing how to please!
While our total stay was not inexpensive, the Quality and Service yielded a great value.

Great location in town, with an amazing restaurant that overlooks the grounds where you can see many birds and other critters while having dinner. The staff are all friendly and helpful, and Onil particularly went over and above to help us navigate a trip to Tikal. Santos guided a morning birding experience and was a delight. While lots to do in San Ignacio, the hotel itself is an experience to remember.

While many hotels also offer exceptional service, what elevates San Ignacio Resort Hotel over the rest is its location, one side facing downtown and the opposite the jungle. The onsite restaurant offers a quiet and accessible location with fine dining with great bird and animal watching from your dining table. We ate there many times with different meals each time and the food was always delicious.
Don't miss the onsite green iguana tour! While the hotel will book a wide variety of tours for you (and you should definitely check those out), we booked most tours from another company because of expanded offerings, so you may want to stroll downtown to talk to other providers to learn all your options before you book. Tours appear to be readily available and we booked each tour only 1 day in advance.
And if you are thinking of seeing Tikal, I recommend doing a private tour from Flores, because you can get into the park when it opens at 6AM. And Flores itself is a worthwhile visit anyway.

If you don’t want to walk down and backup the hill, the restaurant and lobby bar are quite good. The bartender, Noelia in the lobby makes great drinks. And the steak at the restaurant was a nice cut and well cooked.
Special shout out to the concierge and tour operator, Onil. He took us on the jaguar paw cave tubing tour. He knows the ins and outs of the cave and went into detail to show us what it might have been like back in the days of the Mayans. It was the highlight of the trip.

From the walking in the front door we were felt to be made to feel special. We were greeted by the staff who all speak English ( Belize previously had been a British colony). We were shown around the hotel’s facilities then taken to our room where there were rosé petals scattered on the beds. We had our own small balcony complete with hammocks. The room was spacious, clean, comfortable and had all the necessary amenities. The restaurant provided excellent meals and there was the choice of eating in doors or outside on the terrace with superb views of the swimming pool and the jungle. The staff were were friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Unfortunately we only had two nights here but would have loved to stay longer.Hopefully we will get back again one day.

Pros
1. Reception - across the board outstanding from the time you first check in until you sadly have to leave. If it is a hot day they they have cool towels to hand you upon your return and if your shoes get too muddy due to an unexpected rain shower while you are hiking [even if it is supposed to be the dry season] you can get clothes to clean you shoes. All staff had welcoming smiles regardless of time of day.
2. Tour Guides - the San Ignacio Resort Hotel has designated tour guides that work for the hotel. They all grew up in the area and have a love of their community and their country that comes through with the way they discuss the sites you are visiting and the way they treat you during the tours.
3. Concierge - they seem to always be at work regardless of the time and know the community inside out and are always willing to provide insights.
4. Restaurant staff - service was consistently five star, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The chefs were all excellent and do try the conch steak.
5. Housekeeping - fast, efficient, and quiet - didn't even know they were there and the room would be cleaned. We even had our tv one evening that I had "accidentally" put out of service that took time beyond the end of shift!
6. The Green Iguana Conservation Project staff - this initiative is housed at the hotel and the staff working there are both knowledgeable and protective of their iguanas and yes you get pet and hold those that, due to injury, cannot be released back into the wild - and they do love your body heat! {The iguanas, not the staff : ) }
7. Ground keeping staff - the hotel is literally built into the jungle, yet the hotel grounds are clean and the trails [which do get muddy when it rains thus the need for clothes at the front desk] are well marked and part of onsite tours.
8. Hotel transfers. We were delayed in customs and the driver was there waiting for us in the heat, cold water at the ready and a stop at a store in case we wanted to pick up anything. We got down to reception early for our return trip to the airport and the car was already waiting!
9. Walking distance to the market and the downtown shopping area including the French bakery which is across from the market and worth the stop, especially as it is all downhill to get there. Walking distance to AJAW Chocolate - traditional Mayan chocolate making which is not down hill - see the only con below.
Cons
1. The hotel is at the top of the hill in San Ignacio so if you haven't done your cardio before arriving you can get tired doing the two minute walk up the hill - thank goodness for the cold towels awaiting you!
