I have never written a review before but after spending so much money on a room and being so uncomfortable, unhappy and disappointed I wanted to make sure other guests would reconsider this hotel. We booked an “Ocean Front” room. There isn’t anywhere on the hotels website that states your view from the room will be totally blocked by an huge cruise ship docked out front every day of our 6 night stay arriving at 7:00 am some mornings and not departing until 5:00 pm with passengers sitting on their decks looking into our room. That is not what I have ever experienced when booking ocean front rooms! We felt very deceived and we booked our room so far in advance if we would have known differently we would have booked a different type of room.
There was not a comfortable spot in that hotel to relax and unwind. The beds and pillows were lumpy, the outside deck furniture was hard with huge holes in it. You could not sit in it for more than a couple of minutes! The pool lounge chairs were hard without any cushions available. The only place we found remotely comfortable were the sofas at the outside lobby area.
The room air conditioner was so loud and dirty and it was positioned directly across from our bed blowing cold dirty air in our face all night. The room temperature was hard to regulate and you either froze or were too warm.
The construction going on at the hotel directly below and next to our room only added salt into our bad experience.
We were there celebrating my husband’s 60th birthday for this visit. . I called ahead of time requesting chocolates and champagne to be in our room upon our arrival. There was no note of this request upon check in. I had to call 2 times to get this request followed through on only to return to our room with a bucket of water and a bottle of cheap wine and small wrapped chocolates that were there for turn down service.
When visiting Key West again we will certainly not return to this hotel.

Gross, noisy, dirty, mildewy , dated Roach motel.

I’d give this a ZERO if I could. This is the most expensive most terrible hotel I've ever stayed at. We had to leave at 4am because we were both coughing up a lung from the mildew smell, the AC was as loud as a train and would come on sporadically during the night waking us up, and wouldn't cool past like 70, it was humid in the room. You could hear every single guest open and close the doors all night long. I called room service and the concierge never got an answer. The bed was as hard as a rock. It was dated and dirty. For $900 a night for an ocean view room, I’d probably been better off sleeping on a park bench outside.

Let’s start with the staff. They were all 5 stars. The property is situated in Old Town very close to Duval St. and close to lots of stuff. Now for the property. Our room was nice and clean. The mattress was comfortable and we had a balcony overlooking the marina. The resort is under some construction and the restaurant was not open. But they do have a temporary dining tent setup on site with a free hot breakfast and a lunch and dinner menu. This hotel is located at a cruise ship dock. And we had a different ship each day in port. So imagine 3000+ folks disembarking into town each day. We didn’t spend much time in our room so the ships were not a big problem for us. The pool is nice and they have a bar. We had turn down service each night. Overall it’s a nice place. But our next trip will not be to a port for cruise ships. So that’s the reason for only four stars.

My wife and I have been vacationing in Key West every winter for over 20 years. This year, there was a mixup with our reservation at the sister property of the Opal Key, and they were fully booked. Tanisha, the Front Desk Manager of the Opal, made arrangements for us to stay at her hotel for the same price.
I can’t say enough good things about her professionalism, customer service and what we perceived as a genuinely caring attitude. That approach was emulated by everyone we encountered in the hotel: pool staff, room service and wait staff were excellent to a person. They made us feel welcome and appreciated.
The accommodations themselves were first class. We enjoyed a beautiful view adjacent to Mallory Square, where the sunset is remarkable. The pool, the room itself and most of all, the location left us counting the days until we make a return visit. In comparison to other properties we have stayed at in the past, the Opal Key provided us with far and away our most enjoyable time in Key West.

I don’t know how long the works at the theological are going on for but when we there the pool had screening around it, the reception was shut and there is a temporary unit for this and breakfast was being served from a tent. All not ideal for a hotel at this price point but I appreciate works do need to be done, but just something to be aware of if you are visiting soon.

My husband and I just returned from a short vacation in our favorite location in the US, Key West. Although we have visited Key West numerous times this was our first time staying at this resort. Although the resort was in the middle of renovations, it did not impact our fun.
Check in was easy and although our room wasn’t ready yet they held our luggage and we set out for a cocktail and a late lunch. There is free coffee, bottled water, and juice available in the lobby. Once we got our room we were so impressed with the size of the room and balcony. Very nice and clean. They provide daily room service and nightly turndown service with chocolate squares. There was also bottled water in our room.
Unfortunately we were there during a chilly snap (Yes, long sleeves and flip flops) so we were only able to enjoy the pool area 1 day. It’s a very nice area. Clean and well maintained. Towel area was refreshed frequently. They even passed around smoothie samples and an hour later brought around yummy popsicles. They also provide Beach Bum SPF 30 sunscreen!
The sunset bar area was under renovation so didn’t get to check it out.
The location is super convenient to all that lower Duval has to offer. We loved this resort so much we are booked to return in May!
Highly recommend!
FYI- the receptionist at check out said that renovations should be complete in March!

The one BIG (literally) problem with this place
Nice place, good amenities and rooms. Nice pool. Nice location next to Mallory Square. One big (literally) problem: the cruise ships dock right out front (see picture from pool). If you like views of water, would not recommend staying here.
Another vacay in key west

Stayed 4 nights over the busy New Year’s Eve holiday. We knew about the renovations ahead of time. The only inconvenience it caused was check in was in an alternate location and the daily breakfast was in an outdoor tent so it really wasn’t a big deal and hotels do need to get renovated so it’s understandable.
All of the workers we encountered during our stay were very friendly and helpful. We had room 308 which faced the Marina. It was great room for people watching and boat watching. We enjoyed seeing the different cruise ships and yachts go by from our balcony. We had the most perfect view for sunset one night. The location of this hotel is perfect being tucked away from the noise and crowds at Duval street while being within walking distance to all bars, restaurants and attractions. Our room was very clean and hotel staff always asked if we needed anything. We don’t need someone to clean our room daily so we had them do garbage and they gave me more towels and Nespresso coffee pods when needed. I like milk not artificial creamer in coffee so I bought that to keep in fridge from local cvs, no big deal. Hotel gives unlimited waters which my husband and I really appreciate while trying to stay hydrated in the heat. The pool area looked crowded so I didn’t use. Would like more pool options but it’s fine when in Key West and this might get better when they’re done renovating. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to others.

I'll first start off by saying that this hotel is in a great location. On the marina, a short walk to Duval and Green street activity. The room was very clean and the staff were truly fantastic - one of the best places I've ever stayed on a vacation service and cleanliness wise. That being said, a word of warning when booking a room. We booked a marina view room for 5 nights....and paid a premium for this (about $600 a night). We were surprised that on most of those days/nights, our view was almost completely blocked by a large yacht docked right outside of our balcony and the cruise ships that come in almost every morning by 8am and leave around sunset (see my photos). Consider saving money and booking in a less expensive room. The resort had a lot of construction going on - renovating part of the pool space, a complete reno of the on-site restaurant (dining was in a tent next to the marina until the restaurant is complete) and concrete work being done on the second to our last day there where a large cement truck arrived early morning. Comfortable beds, clean room, Nespresso coffee in your room and all day coffee and tea in the lobby in the adjacent building. A relatively quiet location. If you arrive early before check-in time, they will secure your bag so you can get out and explore. Not sure if this is a consistent issue, but two times our key card stopped working and I had to go to the other building to get assistance from the front desk. The first time, two other people had the same issue.

Great week at this resort and marina

Just returned from a long weekend that included a 2 night stay at Opal Key Resort in Key West. I could not have asked for a better stay. They were gracious enough to provide us an upgrade on the room as we were celebrating our 39th wedding anniversary. We had an ocean front room that was amazing. Yes, it is true that cruise ships park there typically from around 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. They are long gone before the beautiful sunset begins and peaks. And truth be told, we were quite impressed at the massive size of these ships! The proximity to all that Key West has to offer makes it all worthwhile. We didn't rent a golf cart, although we initially wanted to just because we could walk everywhere. And the free breakfast each morning was a plus. The staff was incredibly nice and professional. Overall, Opal Key Resort exceeded our expectations by far. Yes, it's expensive but well worth it!
