The hotel's location is ideal in a quiet neighborhood away from the hustle of Waikiki. The private beach is lovely. Staff was attentive though not as knowledgeable of their own offerings as you might expect of a top-flight hotel. I had a spa pedicure which was excellent. The hotel is a bit dated, and our room was in need of a DEEP clean, but a conversation with a very kind front-desk manager remediated the issues as best as could be expected in the short-term. We were told that guest rooms were all getting an "update" but not, unfortunately, full-blow renovations. Our room was one that had not been "updated." Restaurant offerings on-site were good. Reservations a must even as a hotel guest. The hotel MUST consider eliminating their captive Dolphine program. Despite what they say, it is not a "rescue." These animals are bred for sport and entertainment. The entire island of Maui has banned such exhibits/encounters with good reason. In an ideal world, the resort would be ages 14+. There is no way I would use the pool (which needs an update as well) with so many little kids, in diapers, around. Overall, a nice place to stay. A bit pricy considering some of the short comings but better than staying in hectic Waikiki.

We have loved the Kahala since our first stay in 1982. It is elegant and understated, and its peaceful, private location and beautiful swimming beach makes it akin to being on an outer island. The rooms are spacious and well designed, and the two baths with two separate dressing areas are laid out beautifully. We were very lucky to have had Kelly’s help when we checked in. She upgraded us from Mountain View rooms to the very best beachfront rooms at a reasonable daily extra charge, which was much less than if we had booked those rooms. And she gave us a 4:00 pm check out which was really helpful given our red-eye flight home that evening. It gave us almost an entire extra day. The room’s location meant that we could sit on our shady lanai right across the lawn from the beach and run out for a swim. The cove is quite calm and there is a raft for those who want to sunbathe in the middle of the ocean. The food at the breakfast buffet is wonderful and the hotel service is great. We always end our stay in Hawaii with a couple of nights at the Kahala so that we can eat at our favorite restaurants in Honolulu, and the Kahala is the perfect spot.

A resort which has a cruel practice of dolphin captivity in a very small shallow pool.
First and foremost, my partner organised the hotel without being aware of the cruel practice of captive dolphins. First and foremost, my partner organised the hotel without being aware of the cruel practice of captive dolphins. My father in Wales has a bigger and deeper pond than these unfortunate creatures have the miserable misfortune to be trapped in. I found it absolutely inhumane and can’t believe the practice is allowed to continue. I do hope (and I hear there are ongoing efforts to end the cruelty of these amazing dolphins) a more humane way of looking after these dolphins can be achieved.
Second, the hotel is in need of a more contemporary renovation- it felt old - there was peeling wallpaper and scuffed walls.
Also, there was an awful stench of sewage just a few steps away from the hotel at the beach; therefore, I did not dare to swim. I noticed a canal which brings storm water and overflowing garbage into the ocean at this hotel.
In future I’d stay at The Royal Hawaiian or Moana Surfrider. For an amazing resort experience check out The Turtle Bay Beach Resort North of Hale’iwa.

We wined and dined at the Veranda in the Kahala Hotel and Resort while listening to Johnny Valentine. The cuisine was superb, service very smooth and professional and the musician is the best in Hawaii. Mahalo Nui Loa for a wonderful evening.

We came back hoping for a better experience then our trip last year. The issue is that the property is dated. The rooms are old, the bathrooms are not modern, and the furniture needs a refresh. They simply need to do a massive renovation to keep pace with the four seasons and other hotels. The other issue is that they don’t have enough staff by the pool or at the beach, so plan on getting your own food and drinks, and beach chair service. They need a new management company and a total remodel. Sad as this is the best location and an iconic hotel.
