The grill at the Hyatt was delicious and the service was incredible!! Everything came out so quickly! All the dishes we ordered were very tasty. Our waiter Augusto was knowledgeable and helped us customize our order. He answered all the questions we had.

My husband and I had an amazing 4 night stay at The Grand Hyatt. We loved the room-lots of space to store clothes; water bottles left daily and cleaned daily. We especially loved the beach service! Both Miguel and Notorio went above and beyond to provide exceptional service with food/drinks....

My husband and I had an amazing 4 night stay at The Grand Hyatt. We loved the room-lots of space to store clothes; water bottles left daily and cleaned daily. We especially loved the beach service! Both Miguel and Notorio went above and beyond to provide exceptional service with food/drinks. They both were professional, kind and personable. They really made our stay! We dined 1 night in the more casual restaurant and Hector was also wonderful! Great service and attentiveness. We ate lunch on the beach at the hotel. Delicious drinks, guacamole, sandwiches and salads. We ate dinner on 5 th Avenue. I hope that we can come back next February. The weather was perfect!!

In February 2025, my wife and I celebrated an anniversary with eight nights in a Grand Suite King at the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen. We booked the trip as a package through Costco Travel. Overall, we really liked it and would recommend it -- some complaints, but nothing too bothersome. We were picked up at the Cancun airport by BD Experience, the service Costco Travel uses there. It went smoothly. There was a BD Experience rep waiting outside the airport, in a crowd of other reps but not hard to find. (Before you exit the airport there is an area with a ton of other travel reps who will try to pretend they’re your rep, but ignore them, exit into the open air, and look for a BD Experience person with a Costco Travel sign.) She told us where to go. We’d arranged for a private car; we had to wait for it, but not too long, maybe ten minutes, as there had been an accident on the highway coming in. It was one of those big SUVs and felt pretty lux. We found the design of the hotel to be pretty cool. It’s got a huge, open-air central section that descends in a long series of tiers from the entrance to the pools and beach, with bars and restaurants in the middle and the rooms forming a perimeter around it. It has sort of a midcentury look to it, like something Eero Saarinen would have designed. Not at all the typical beachfront vibe, so maybe not everyone would enjoy it, but we liked it. Definitely a “we can waste a lot of space because we’re that rich” sort of feel. Our suite was room 540, which is on the top floor of the beachfront part of the hotel. The suite itself had a weird design. The bathroom was huge -- nice soaking tub, two sinks and a make-up console, and a shower that could have fit seven people, or at least seven really close friends. Only downside: the toilet clogged really easily. In contrast, the sitting area was a little small, with a small L-shaped couch and small table with two chairs jammed in the corner. We didn’t really spend much time there, because our ocean-view balcony was much nicer; it had a table with two chairs and one cushioned recliner. (It would have been nice if the recliner could have fit two people or there was a second one.) No fridge, just a minibar. The bedroom was mostly taken up by the bed. The furniture was nothing to write home about, but the bed was comfy. TVs in each room, and we brought an HDMI cable that we were able to plug in so we could use our laptop to stream shows. There was a small panel near the door that controlled the lights for the whole suite, with lots of settings, which was nice. But one of the options was Do Not Disturb, and twice that got turned on inadvertently, which meant they didn’t clean our room that day until we called in the evening. (Maybe we accidentally turned it on once, but the second time I swear it was not us!) Our favorite part of the experience was the access to the Grand Club, which is near the front of the hotel (so a bit of a walk from the beach area). It has both indoor and outdoor seating. I don’t remember exactly how much extra this cost us, but it was *totally* worth it. Full breakfast each day, two-hour happy hour each evening, and it stayed open during the rest of the day for cold water bottles, soft drinks, and munchies (nuts, cookies, pretzels). The happy hour had an open bar and what they said were hors d'oeuvres but which we actually found to be more than enough for dinner, with lots of variety: salads, soup, stews, breads, desserts. We are not foodies, but we thought the food was really good. So we basically didn’t eat anywhere else -- not because we were being cheap but because we really didn’t have any desire to! The staff there was great, particularly Ana, who asked what day our anniversary was and then, when that evening arrived, had a table waiting for us with a bottle of chilled cava and a plate of chocolate-covered strawberries. We can’t recommend the Club more. Don’t bother paying for all-inclusive; just pay for Club access. Speaking of the staff, we found them consistently kind and attentive. When we first got to our suite, they had hung balloons and a Happy Anniversary sign and provided some chocolate-covered strawberries. A very nice welcome! The only time they let us down was when we tried to order some chips and guac from room service and discovered that the phone in our room was dead. So I had to walk to the restaurant to place the order -- only to be told that even though the restaurant made the food, only the front desk at the other end of the property could take the order. Not sure why someone in the restaurant couldn’t pick up the phone and call the front desk, but whatever. The pools were fine – an adult pool and a regular pool, with some little side pools for soaking in. No hot tub. It could be hard to find a pair of lounge chairs in the pool area -- it was the usual resort thing where people “claimed” chairs with towels and clothing really early in the day but then barely used them. (It was usually slightly easier to find chairs on the beach.) So for our last day we splurged on a lovely poolside cabana: $176 for eight hours, which included five beers, five soft drinks, and a fruit tray. (My wife has a fruit allergy, so they kindly substituted chips and guac.) The beach was lovely, as one would expect. Gentle surf. There’s a reef about thirty meters out, so no bodysurfing or anything. The sargasso seaweed was not at all bad when we were there. We could see them collecting it at times, and once or twice it was underfoot in the shallow water, but it really didn’t affect our experience at all. The fitness center was pretty nice: weight machines, maybe a dozen treadmills, bikes, etc. One Peloton. Not very crowded at all – there were never more than two or three other people there when I went in the afternoon. They had yoga and exercise classes, but it was a little hard to figure out exactly when, so we didn’t do them. Looks like they also had an area for kids to play in and a lap pool. We didn’t try the spa. We also didn’t have the hotel or Costco Travel arrange any day trips or anything, although they offered, so we can’t comment on those options. The neighborhood around the hotel has lots of convenience stores, restaurants, and pharmacies. And there’s a touristy shopping area nearby, along Fifth Avenue. Like I said, we didn’t eat meals outside the hotel, but we did buy some munchies and drinks to take back to the room, and the best option for those was definitely the Chedraui supermarket at 10th and 34th. Strangely, it was really hard to buy regular tortilla chips; Chedraui sometimes had some, but they were hard to find. More strange still: it was IMPOSSIBLE to find guacamole, pico de gallo, or salsa at any store! Once we found some freshly made green salsa at Chedraui, but that was as close as we got. Weird. So, bad stuff. First, there was some sort of construction/repair going on the whole time, involving scaffolding high above the pool area. It impeded foot traffic and was sometimes kind of loud. Second, as other reviews have noted, there’s a beach club in the north side of the hotel that plays really loud house music all day, stopping at around 7.00pm. It’s really annoying and kept us from hanging in the room or on our balcony during the day. Fortunately we wanted to be at the pool or beach then anyway, so we just found seats on the south end of things where the music was more distant. But I don’t know what the hotel is thinking, having that there. It’s the opposite of relaxing. Third, we prefer to avoid drinking tap water in Mexico, so one problem was that bottled or filtered water was really hard to come by. You’d get four bottles in the room each day (and we could get more at the Club anytime), but they were glass and were not allowed at the pool or beach. The towel station had a water station with little paper cone-shaped cups, but that was hardly adequate. So bring your own water bottle. Finally, on our last day there we awoke to find water dripping from multiple spots along the bathroom ceiling. We were on the top floor, and it hadn’t rained, so I guess a pipe leaked? Thank goodness it was in the bathroom and not the rest of the suite, because none of our stuff got wet. If we had not been leaving that day, it would have been a huge problem. As it was, we just left the room early and hung out in the Club until the car service picked us up in the late morning. The front desk wasn’t particularly apologetic about this when we told them, but I guess we were checking out, so? All in all, though a lovely experience there, and we would definitely consider returning. (Not via American Airlines, though, but that’s a different review. . . .)

Don’t bother with club level - the extra cost isn’t worth the lounge snacks and drinks.

They tried to charge us for minibar and breakfast when they shouldn’t have.

Overall a great experience at Grand Hyatt !

We ate at The Grill and had the pleasure of being served by Augusto! He was beyond kind and the food was incredible. Great tacos, delicious Gnocchi. Augusto was friendly and hospitable but not overbearing. Highly recommend for a dinner with your love or family.

The configuration of the hotel is "weird". It is built on a hill overlooking a beach. So, you spend time going up and down stairs or a pathway. After a week spent in our room, we have not been able to turn down the A/C (too cold). Same goes with the electrical system that is somewhat automatic, and it is difficult to have the right light in the right place. The restaurants, there are three: Mexican. The grill and Sushis. The food is average (we ate in two restaurants) and like some other guests at the hotel, we decided to eat out. The beach... There are still some seaweeds in the water. It is not as bad as few years ago in Playa del Carmen but still, the presence of seaweeds in the water is not ideal. The swimming pools are full of young kids... Not ideal for swimming... We will NOT go back to the Grand Hyatt in Playa del Carmen

We’ve traveled all over the world and stayed in so many places, but we keep coming back to the Hyatt Playa del Carmen—because of the hotel itself and, more importantly, the incredible service. A huge thank you to Humberto, who welcomed us with so much warmth and kindness. Every single person here, from the poolside servers to the entire hotel staff, makes this place special. The food is amazing, the drinks are always cold, and the views? The kind that make you stop, take a deep breath, and feel truly grateful to be alive. And to Humberto thank you again for making my pineapple birthday the best one yet!
