What a great hotel, with a VERY interesting history! Situated just one block back from the beach, with direct beach access this is an intriguing hotel. The many rooms are named after the lost colonists, that simply disappeared back in the 1500's (I think). There is also a great story of how the hotel was moved to it's current location. Our room was on the 3rd floor. It was clean, comfortable and very quiet. Even though we had neighbors we never heard them. The breakfast was plentiful and delicious, and thee afternoon drinks and canapés a nice touch. There are a few restaurants within walking distance but for me the location for dining was so so. The Wright Brothers memorial was about 5 minutes drive, as was Jeanette's pier. Everything else is a bit of a hike. Not a deal breaker but, because we flew in and did not have a car a different location may have worked a little better. In saying that if the beach is what you want you will be happy as Larry! They do have bikes and beach chairs for use, which was a very nice touch. Overall this is a really nice property with beautiful surrounds.

The historical charm is fun and will check your AI weariness. With more than a hundred years of presence in Nags head we were drawn to discover more. The staff are friendly and very accommodating. We had room twelve, with a kitchenette and king size bed that was very comfortable. We liked that you could open the two doors(or screened windows) and have a nice cross breeze. There is air conditioning as well. The bathroom was a good size, however condensation caused an environment favourable to mold, a trip to the store for bleach spray solved this issue. We all should be experts by now after covid to the wonders of bleach. I recommend they replace the carpet with vinyl tile that will do well with sandy feet.
The lodging comes with breakfast and a happy hour, this gives a community vibe with families, young couples and work weary old people like us. There was even a wedding on Saturday with pictures. Hopefully the pictures don’t include us in bathing suits going to the happy hour from the pool, just kidding. The pool is a perfect retreat. The gardens and birds are fabulous, a well cared for landscape with beachy drift wood sculptures and this friendly bunny. We liked the First Colony Inn a lot and enjoyed relaxing on the porch, deck, pool and gardens. The ocean beach is available walking across the street about 200 ft near the original location of the inn. The inn was relocated back from the ocean and raised to protect it after a storm. Jeanette’s pier is an easy walk away and millers restaurant is across the street on the bay side. It was great to see the kids spending time being kids having fun with their families, gives hope for the world!

We stayed here from March 28- April 1
After reading many reviews, we decided to stay at First Colony Inn as It offered something different to the chain hotels that we could have booked. It is on the national historic register. We got there after an 8 Hour car drive and were greeted warmly by Alma, who seemed to be doing everything by herself that weekend. Check in was quick and easy and we were led to our room on the ground floor. We did appreciate when Alma told us happy hour was just over but she could offer us a glass of wine, after a long ride this was very welcoming.
We got the Thomas Ellis. The room is small and cozy. We loved that the
bed and bath linens were very clean.
Pillows comfortable
There is a TV, Keurig coffee maker in the room and a mini fridge. The room is tastefully decorated , however the furniture needs an upgrade, it looks tired. The carpets could do with a deep clean.
Bathrooms were very clean, but untidy caulking and old grout is not attractive. We understand times are tough and staff are limited so we give props for everything being spotless. Hot water, pressure and AC all worked excellent.
The mattress desperately needs to be replaced. There is no support and the springs creak as you turn over.
We loved the library area.
The property is beautiful we enjoyed the wrap around decks just outside the rooms , whimsical garden areas for relaxation and cute art pieces all over.
I could tell that, although this was the spring that in the summer, the gardens would be flourishing and beautiful. Overall, the property is in need of some help, cobwebs cleaned, outside doors need painting and the general upkeep would certainly make it better.
This is understandable as it’s spring time low season and as a small business things are difficult to do year round.
The breakfast certainly was excellent on both the days that we were there. There was a German egg custard soufflé thing which was delicious. The quality of the pastries coffee and food was excellent and definitely better than a chain hotel could ever provide. Alma was amazing running about like a ninja, serving breakfast, cleaning tables, refilling coffee while checking in and out guests at the same time!
She was very accommodating to even pack us a snack when we had to go on an early morning tour and couldn't sit down for breakfast.
The dining area is small and works on a time basis which is not a problem and if that doesn’t work, you can always take your plate out to the beautiful decks that are around the building. In the early afternoon they provide wine and cheese which after a long day is a nice touch.
Beach chairs and bikes provided. The walk to the beach is less than 3 minutes , and you have a beautiful beach to yourself. Keep a lookout for all the artistic details around the garden, which are cool.
The hotel is conveniently right off the highway however, we did not get bothered by any sounds and once you’re on the property, you feel a world away. Good and safe parking.
We were able to meet the inn keeper on the last day we were leaving and she was pleasant as well. All in all, we were very comfortable and happy with our stay at First Colony Inn - it certainly needs some upkeep but we would definitely stay here again. The Location is very central, close to lovely restaurants, Wright brothers Museum, Dunes, Bodhi lighthouse and restaurants. The property has a special charm that will make us come back for more.

First time back in 10 years. The only changes we noticed were for the better. Food was excellent and the staff professional. Will definitely come again. Beach access is a short walk away. Glad we went in the off season, traffic and the crowds increase dramatically in the summer

While there is no elevator, there are no more than 2 flights of stairs so it wasn’t bad to take our luggage to the top rooms. They are not allowed to add an elevator due to local governmental regulations for historic buildings. These rooms allowed us to see the ocean from a distance. The hotel was equipped with a nice pool and a trail to the ocean. The gourmet breakfast was a delight!
