A short 30 min drive north if Ubud and you arrive in the middle of the jungle with all the luxury treat . Stay are amazing from Chef to front of house to waiter. Rooms are unique with nothing else then nature . Probably the best service / landscape in Ubud area. Only 16 villa make it even more special. We felt like king and queen.

If you stay in just one hotel in Ubud, make it Banyan Tree Escape. The “No Walls, No Doors” concept caught my attention, and after experiencing it, I can say it’s worth every penny.
Nature & Environment
A true jungle escape with lush greenery all around. Insects are inevitable but well-managed—I was initially worried but quickly adapted.
Villa & Comfort
Spacious villas with a gorgeous private pool. No air conditioning, but the mountain breeze and a well-designed cooling fan kept us perfectly comfortable, even slightly chilly at night!
Service & Activities
With only 16 villas, service is incredibly personalized. Each villa has a dedicated host who takes care of everything, making the stay seamless and full of pleasant surprises. The resort offers free daily activities like trekking, mixology, and cooking, plus paid excursions like volcano hikes and ATV rides.
Food & Dining
The on-site restaurant is fantastic, using fresh local ingredients, including herbs from their garden. Loved how they respect and incorporate Balinese culture into the dining experience.
A perfect blend of wilderness and luxury—highly recommend!

This review is long overdue. We spent 2 weeks in Bali, stayed at 4 different hotels/resorts and this was, by far, our best experience. Months later, we are still dreaming of going back.
Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Ubud or other touristic places, we quickly felt like we had arrived "home". The place is so gorgeous and serene, right in the middle of the jungle, in total privacy and with only 16 rooms.
The staff is wonderful, efficient and after 4 nights there, we felt like we were saying goodbye to friends.
The rooms, while all identical, have very different views and feel since the hotel is build on a steep hill. We chose the "Seven Peaks" (room 12) and would choose this room again, or at least one of the villas on top of the hill. Not only is it very conveniently located near the restaurant, but also had amazing views and total privacy.
Since I don't like the mix of heat and humidity, after staying a few days in Ubud, we were very pleased to see the altitude did make a difference and our stay was very comfortable. We thought the mosquitoes would be a bother, but not at all. We slept like babies and the ingenious AC kept us very comfortable while in bed.
The stay includes all meals. It was nice to discover Indonesian food, but I have to admit it would have been nice to also have an option of something more familiar. Some of the offerings were amazing, others not so much. Always beautifully presented. The chef was great, it's just that it was very different from what we are used to. Breakfast was always fantastic.
Many activities are included and I strongly recommend checking them out.
In addition, some excursions are available. We did the LandRover tour (Lavascape). You leave the hotel at 4:30 am, which is great with the jet lag (from the US). Your hotel guide (for us it was Uya) and the LandRover owner will take you to a beautiful spot and set up breakfast for you to enjoy the sunrise on Mount Batur and Mount Abang. Afterwards we went to the site of a volcanic eruption and drove on the black sand. It was gorgeous. On the way back to the hotel we stopped in many cultural places. It was wonderful and we were back at the hotel by 11 am.
Every evening, we learned how to make a cocktail with Arsana. Very kind and patient, and the cocktails were delicious. Once again, it's included.
We also stayed at Raffles and Bulgari, but Buahan is the place we most long to return to. And we will!

From breakfast to dinner we were shown an entire world of flavours, all locally sourced and presented to us by highly knowledgeable and mostly local staff. The menus also had more classic options for the less adventurous, but we absolutely loved the unique creativity coming from chef Sheandy and Arsana!
The villa was out of this world and waking up to the sunrise in the jungle is an experience we will both never forget. We also had Budi available on WhatsApp around the clock to help with anything we wanted, which was amazing!
Thank you so much to everyone at Buahan for making our stay unforgettable!

First of all, our villa was immaculate. I loved the no-walls concept living, and the jungle views were just breathtaking. The interior is done with so much finesse and attention to details, representing the local area well.
The experiences the hotel offers are a must!! We had a private dining experience which was super romantic, and also the couples massages at their spa which I definitely recommend. One of my favourite experiences was out traditional flower offering and hiking down to the nearby waterfall, it's a day I won't forget.
The staff are so kind and helpful. They made us feel at home! Thanks so much to the whole team!

Every single person there is extremely friendly and passionate about their job! It was so delightful to see them enjoying their work and life at Buahan. Thank you Ogi, Asana, Legi, Monica, Yogi and everyone (sorry I forgot your names…). To me, it’s a very spiritual place that allows you to fully connect with the nature. I look forward to coming back

Amazing luxury villa with no walls. A Life Time experience
An Amazing expérience. Very sweet and helpfull staff. To sleep in a beautiful luxury villa with no walls in level with palmtrees gave us a sensation of beeing one with nature. The food from the kitchen with daily harvested fresh greens, leaves, flowers and fruits was simply unique.

I wanted to wait a while and digest our trip to Indonesia before posting this review. Buahan of all our stops (Bawah, amanjiwo and others) is the place I feel most conflicted or challenged in reviewing. It was not my first trip to Bali or the ubud are and certainly not my first trip to a luxury hotel. I also enjoy the outdoors and love camping. That being said Buahan seems to be uncertain as to exactly what it is. Is it an idyllic escape in a beautiful spot meant to contemplate nature? Is it a cultural immersion? Is it a luxury hotel? It fails at ll of these but has immense charm. The location is gorgeous. It is far out of ubud and easy to relax that being said there are very limited opportunities to spontaneously occupy oneself. There is no gym. There are very limited free activities. We did the free walk in the rice paddies which ultimately arrived in a nice spot but one had to avoid 100 mangy dogs en route. We were signed up for the free bike ride - which disappointingly we were told goes to the same location but we ultimately cancelled when I put on a helmet that had never been washed and I was confronted with the worst stench. The food is good. You have no choice but to eat onsite. But some of the charms a special fried leaf served the first night, wears thin as each night one snack is a a different fried leaf. There is no game room, no evening lecture, no library, no managers cocktail party and the only opportunity is to sit by one’s villa fire which at least one night hadn’t been lit even when we returned home. The lack of walls ultimately felt gimicky and while having some charm had little practical effect on anything when 3 layers of netting etc form a barrier. The villa had little distraction. How about board games? Books on the wildlife in the area? The limited snack in the villa were store bought cookies and chips. I could go on. Ultimately this is a phenomenal location. The staff are truly wonderful. Management seems to lack a vision and they need to invest in infrastructure or activities to allow one to just chill. They need an excercise class every morning. They need gym. They need a library. They need an organized evening activity/lecture/nature walk etc. they need cards etc in the villa. The cost is high and it needs to be a luxury experience. I’m glad I went. Would I ever go back? No

My husband and I had the good fortune of staying at Buahan on our honeymoon.
I have no hesitation in saying it was the best hotel experience I have ever had. The setting is unbeatable, the rooms are impeccably appointed, the view breathtaking.
But what made the trip was the team at Buahan, led by Puspa Anggareni, the impressive and energetic general manager, and we were lucky to be looked after by Widi - our highly professional and knowledgable butler. The entire team went above and beyond (by some degree) from a 5* experience, there really is nothing like it.
The star of our entire honeymoon was chef Sheandy Satria. Meals every day were quite literally a taste sensation, made more alive by doing the Jungle Affair experience and spending the morning foraging for food with chef Sheandy ourselves. We learned so much about ingredients alien to our UK climate, stories behind each dish, as well as cooking together to make a meal that was delicious and we’ll make again at home with the personalised recipe card chef provided. Just one example of how thoughtful, kind and utterly unforgettable our stay at Buahan was.
I can’t thank chef Sheandy enough, nor recommend it more highly. We’d be overjoyed to come back.

For its price point and five-star rating (over $1,000 USD per night), we had high expectations for Buahan, Banyan Tree. Having previously enjoyed our stay at Banyan Tree Phuket, we were eager to experience another property within the brand. Ultimately, while the Buahan Banyan Tree offers an intriguing concept, our stay revealed several shortcomings in execution.
The Good:
• Unique no-wall concept: The open design is bold and sets the property apart from other luxury accommodations.
• Exceptional sleep quality: Over three nights, we enjoyed impeccable sleep. The mattress struck the perfect balance between firmness and softness, and although there’s no central AC, the cooling fan above the bed worked wonderfully. Falling asleep to the ambient jungle sounds was a memorable experience.
• Outstanding service from our butler: Budi made our stay much more enjoyable. For instance, when he learned about our early morning Mount Batur sunrise hike, he proactively arranged a wake-up call and provided a boxed breakfast to take with us.
The Not-So-Good:
• Form over function: While the property emphasizes aesthetics and Instagram appeal, functionality sometimes falls short. The food presentation was consistently stunning, but the quality varied. Some dishes were phenomenal, while others were disappointing. After a few misses, we opted for Grab delivery for meals not included in our stay.
• Villa pool usability: The private pool looked gorgeous but was too cold to use. By comparison, other resorts like Alila Uluwatu offer pools with water that’s pleasantly lukewarm. Adding a pool heater would make a significant difference.
• Limited privacy: The villas are not as private as expected. While walking around, we could see into other villas, and anyone passing by ours could overhear conversations.
• Long check-in process: It took over an hour for us to settle into our room, despite arriving at 4 PM.
• Bug concerns: While the villa itself was impressively free of bugs given the open-wall concept, dining at the second-floor restaurant was another story. Meals were often interrupted by houseflies and mosquitoes.
• Implicit upselling: Staff occasionally leaned into upselling, which felt inappropriate given the already high cost of the stay.
• No fitness facility: For a luxury resort, the lack of a gym or fitness area was disappointing
Final Thoughts:
The Buahan Banyan Tree offers an interesting concept and is worth trying for a short stay (1-2 nights) to experience its unique design. However, at this price point, we feel the value is lacking, and the execution doesn’t fully match the promise. We preferred our stays at other properties in Bali. Even better, If you want exceptional service and world class food, I’d recommend visiting other Asian countries like Japan or Thailand.

This place feels truly magical. The magic is not just in the breathtaking setting—the lush jungle, private waterfall, and the symphony of birdsong in your wall-less Bale. It's not just in the careful attention to detail in your room, the common spaces, and the excursions you participate in—whether it’s watching the sunrise, driving around a crater in a vintage Land Rover, or walking through vast rice fields, immersed in the beauty of Bali. And it’s not just in the exquisite food that rivals even the finest Michelin-starred restaurants.
The real magic is in the people—the soul of the Buatan village, infused into every aspect of this experience. I've traveled the world and visited many places, but I am genuinely awed by each interaction with the team here. I call them a team because their coordination, promptness, knowledge, and dedication are extraordinary. They move around you like fireflies, each interaction a small, brilliant flash of joy, all with one singular goal: to make you happy.
I’ve never left a place feeling this content and grateful. Suksma

My five-day stay at the Banyan Tree Buahan in Bali, was fantastic! I had the pleasure of experiencing a revolutionary concept in luxury hospitality. The resort's ethos of "no doors, no walls" not only provided a breathtakingly open and intimate connection with nature but also enriched my stay both spiritually and physically.
Banyan Tree Buahan champions sustainability as its new luxury. The food served is harvested directly from the resort's grounds and nearby village, affirming a commitment to local communities and environmental stewardship. This approach is complemented by stunning views of rice terraces that gracefully contour across the landscape, offering a serene backdrop to the dining experience.
Spectacular vistas of the seven peaks, visible from various points on the property. Each view seemed meticulously framed to enhance our stay, showcasing an attention to detail I have rarely seen in other luxury accommodations.
The staff, notably Ojy, Katut, and Arda, were exceptionally attentive, ensuring that every aspect of our stay was handled with care and personalised service. Their efforts made us feel both welcomed and connected to the cultural essence of Bali.
The spa treatments were nothing short of transformative. Beyond the expert massages, the atmosphere and surrounding landscapes were utterly mesmerizing, creating a sanctuary where one could truly reconnect.
A highlight of our visit was the soul freedom experience, a spiritual journey that allowed us to engage deeply with nature and express gratitude for its formidable beauty and strength. This experience was profoundly emotional.
In conclusion, this s more than just a resort; it is a gateway to a unique, sustainable luxury experience that respects both the environment and the local community. I am already looking forward to my next visit.

We saw an ad for Buahan - A Banyan Tree escape and we knew this was our kind of an experience that we would cherish so we decided to book it for our anniversary.
From the pickup, to the introduction call from our host, Pak Dewa Riadi to the check-in process, everything was seamless. The hospitality was on point. He was our go to man for everything. Truly appreciate him!
Little did we know that that was just the beginning of our pampering service. Our schedules were handed to us one night prior. They made sure we were comfortable at all times.
On the first night, the resort manager, Ibu Puspa Anggareni took her time out to converse with us for almost an hour giving an insight to how this project came about, sustainability, the upcoming Banyan Tree projects and we were mesmerized by her personal stories. She made us feel like we’ve known her a long time.
The purification ritual hosted by Pak Oji was an incredible experience and a must do for all resort guests.
The dining experience is mostly farm to table and I was amazed to learn that there is barely any waste. everything is fermented and created to blend with their cooking style.
We had the honor of chatting and enjoying all meals of Chef Sheandy Satria and served Purnayasa 'Big John', Olive, Arsana, Nanda, Armadi 'Dollar' Sutianto and Barli and every single one of them spoilt us rotten and made sure that everything suited our taste buds.
The spa therapists Yanti & Tirtha were incredible.
And what else can I say about the no doors, no walls concept besides that’s it’s practically heaven on earth!!!
This escape is a must do atleast once in your life. Definitely a 10/10
