I hate writing bad reviews. We had such high hopes for this stay, but it was just meh. We come to GR several times a year and usually stay at the JW. We thought we'd try The Amway. Having grown up in Michigan, we expected to we wow'd. We were not.
The first problem was that we expected to be in the newer tower portion of the hotel based on our reservation. On check-in, we learned we were in the old portion. The history is interesting to see, but the room was disappointing for the cost (very dated, very small). After 25 minutes of trying to get hot water, I went to the front desk.
They apologized and explained how to book a riverview if you want to be in the tower... so lesson learned about making the reservation.
The front desk was accommodating (thank you!) and moved us to the tower (it was Jan 1, and the hotel was pretty empty). This move incurred a $50 upgrade cost, however. We were already paying north of $500 before the upgrade.
The Tower room was much nicer in terms of view. We got a nice corner view, which was the highlight of the stay. The room was not very clean though (in fact, I picked up party favors left on the floor of our room from New Years Eve the night before upon entering), and there were crumbs on the floor throughout the room. The shower was definitely dated, paint peeling, mold, etc.
In terms of comfort, there were no cups for the coffee maker, only lids. There was no body soap, and the shampoo/conditioner were Dollar Store level. The pill sized, cheap hand soap we got never got replaced during our stay. Housekeeping only made the bed, did not take cups from the night before (they were left on our bedside tables). No robes, not great blankets, meh pillows.
The biggest complaint we have after two nights, however, is the roaring sound of the heater kicking on. Every time the thermostat kicked the heat on, it sounded like a jet engine taking off. It woke us throughout the night. It was so loud that you couldn't hear the TV over it. We have slept terribly, having come here for respite and recharge.
Sadly, I don't think we'll consider the Amway again when we visit. For the price, you can do better here.

The Amway has a beautiful property, but sadly our guest room left a lot to be desired. Dirt in the corners of the bathroom and room, dust and build up on many surfaces of the makeup mirror, stains on the carpet, discolored sheets. Very unimpressed for the price.
Calling the hotel ‘grand’ is an oxymoron
We stayed at the Amway Grand to attend a wedding, and because it also happened to be our anniversary, decided to splurge on a suite. My goodness—what a disappointment. When I pay $700/night for a stay—it’s not just for a room with a nice view, it’s for the experience—and this...
We stayed at the Amway Grand to attend a wedding, and because it also happened to be our anniversary, decided to splurge on a suite. My goodness—what a disappointment. When I pay $700/night for a stay—it’s not just for a room with a nice view, it’s for the experience—and this is where the Grand does not live up to its name. First—we stayed 3 nights—our room was never cleaned. Second—our coffee maker was only stocked with decaf—we had to get regular coffee from the front desk. Oh—and if you’d like bottled water, you have to ask to get that refreshed, too. There’s no room service, and the bathroom is like an upgraded spartan bathroom; crappy towels and an industrial toilet (you can flush with your foot). I would’ve loved to leave feeling like this was money well spent; instead, I feel like a fool. Don’t waste your money here-

Beautiful hotel!!!! The ambiance was simply elegant. The staff was friendly, it was very busy since there was an art exhibit in town. I woke up at 2am just to wander around. I was hoping to see some ghosts, haha, but it was just quiet. It is very well maintained.
Beautiful hotel but no hot water for showers

Beautiful property! Historic Pantlind part of the hotel is a step into luxury of days gone by. Great breakfast (and value) in the Wolfgang Puck restaurant on the first floor. But the cold shower experience was unexpected, as well as the response from the front desk that “it happens sometimes and they’ll let the engineering team know.” If the hotel routinely cannot provide hot (or at least warm) water for their guests, the least they could do is let them know ahead of time.

Surprised with a corner suite.
Great hotel in a great downtown area. We arrive at the hotel at 7pm and the hotel already gave our 2 beds handicap room to someone else, but since we are a Hilton Honors we were upgrade to a wonderful and large corner suite, excellent for a wheelchair.

This is my 4th time staying at the Amway, which is typically a great experience, especially being so centrally located. Unfortunately, we had a poor experience this time. Our room is next to construction which woke us up before 7am, our bathroom door is broken, the hairdryer only blows cold air, and the refrigerator doesn’t work (and we found out the hard way, boo for warm drinks and food we had to throw out!). Also, our room A/C doesn’t seem to work at all. We set it to 60, but it won’t blow air and is just saying at 74. Not what I expect from a pretty pricy hotel, especially when my experience has been otherwise great.

Terrible experience! My room was directly across from the elevator on the 8th floor. Literally the "whoosh" sound an elevator makes as it ascends and descends was loud enough to keep me up all night and literally you could feel the vibration in the headboard, not to mention the dong of the elevator and people noise. The room had the ceiling falling in, exposing decades of piled up dust, pipes, and wiring. Other sections of the ceiling were stained from water damage. I spent the first bit of the stay on my hands and knees cleaning up the dusty nastiness on the bathroom floor providing me the full on Cinderella experience. There were small black flecks of some sort of yuck all over the "blanket", which was really just an overrated sheet. I had a room facing the street and road noise was loud and an issue, at least until traffic died down after 11 or so. The bed was uncomfortable for both my husband and I due to it being very firm, but if that is what you are used to then it may not be an issue for you. I contacted the desk to request a room change, but alas that was not possible due to rooms being sold out. I requested ear plugs and I was cheerfully referred to the gift shop where I may purchase some. There is no breakfast service. The options are Starbucks, which opens at 6:30 or a counter offering that opens at 7. There are thousands of people here and conference registration opens at 7 so unless you feel like being an candidate on your own personal episode of the Hunger games, bring snacks or something. Consequently, your choice is either walk in the rain (bummer) or use your car, but then fight the massive lines to find a parking space for the conference upon return. I didn't check Door Dash or Uber, so perhaps that would be an option. Bathroom lines at this conference for educators, mostly women, was an issue. Imagine a concert line where the women are lined up for a mile, yet hardly any men using their facilities since proportionally there was a significant disparity of attendees being female v. male. They need to switch a few of the men's facilities temporarily for this conference to accommodate. The one advantage was having a room, providing access to a private bathroom. But alas just a little sketched out that at any unannounced time some dude would be in to make repairs to the obviously leaking ceiling. This was my first stay at Amway since I normally stay up the road for this conference for less than half the price and breakfast included. That cheaper room was far more comfortable and the lack of breakfast options at Amway negated the convenience of location. I am busy with work, so I am not taking time to enjoy the sights and offerings of the city, but the location of the hotel does put you in the middle of everything. This stay may be an isolated experience with Amway, but I would not return here unless it is the only option.

Not worth the money charged! Booked a king bed room at over $300 per night and prepaid for parking and breakfast. On arrival observed that the posted daily parking garage fee was less than what the hotel was charging me. Asked for a river view room and was told I could have one for an additional $250 dollars. Went to the room and found out the two bottles of off brand water in the room were $3 each. Went out to a dinner and show and returned at 930 PM. Hotel store was closed. We spent the next 30 minutes trying to find a working ice machine and vending machine to purchase drinks and snacks. We were told by staff that they were switching venders so there were not many vending machines in the hotel. We were sent to 2 different floors to look for the machines and were told to report if they were not there so the front desk could update their records of available vending machines. Then we were told that we could buy snacks and sodas at a grocery store down the street. Not fun walking in the rain, past the street people smoking weed. Bed was not firm it was hard and uncomfortable. Coffee pods in the room made highly diluted coffee. Woke the next day and attempted to get the prepaid breakfast. One of the two restaurants was closed for the day and the other did not have the full advertised menu. Food was not good and the bill was less than the prepaid amount. When I questioned the charge, I was told by the front desk clerk no adjustment would be made. Manager heard the conversation and asked me if I wanted compensation. I advised her that I did not want compensation but wanted her to know that I had much better service and amenities at hotels charging less. There is more to report but I am running out of available characters so I will leave it read the other reviews and DIDO to most of the comments. Stay somewhere else. This hotel is charging a lot and proving less than less expensive hotels in the area.
