My wife and I used a travel agent to plan a trip for our 30th anniversary. We wanted to visit Nantucket especially since my wife has become a big Elin Hilderbrand fan. We also love the beach. We wanted to take our bikes over on the ferry and really enjoy the natural beauty of the island. Our agent could not have picked a more perfect place than the Summer House cottages in sconset. Away from the hustle and bustle of the ferry terminal area the Summer House Cottages are located in Sconset a 45 minute bike ride from the ferry terminal. Upon our arrival there we were met by Danielle the owner. She was so gracious and friendly. She led us from the main house which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean to our own private cottage. The cottage was simply a rustic beauty. Equipped with its own operable sky light it was nestled in the bluff and surrounded by roses growing up each outside wall. What a unique and amazing treasure this cottage was! A short walk down the bluff was a nice pool, bar and restaurant and right beyond that was a private beach. Both the smaller poolside restaurant and main Summer House restaurant served fresh and delicious seafood. I also want to add that Main restaurant served an impressive complimentary breakfast buffet each morning. What a treat! The surrounded areas in Sconset were great for hiking and biking. A truly charming little town. When we wanted to go to the shops or other beaches we simply got on our bikes and pedaled in. We had an amazing 30th anniversary on Nantucket and the Summer House Cottages were such a big part of that! I highly recommend this place to enjoy the natural beauty of this island !

A week before arriving, we received a call that half the property was without hot water but they’d move us to the other side. OK. We asked about a dinner reservation because we’d twice called and were told they’d confirm soon but hadn’t. The manager said the Summer House restaurant wasn’t yet open. At least we were told that much. Upon arrival, the property was a construction zone. The pool was empty. There was nobody in charge except a delightful cleaning woman. Everything is tiny and tight and the pictures are staged to have you believe you have a view. Our view was of a large illegally parked truck belonging to another guest. We asked them to kindly move it a few feet but they didn’t…all weekend. There was no one at the property to manage anything. The manager (owner?) called one day to ask how the trip was. When I said I wished they’d been more truthful about the property and lack of ALL amenities, she said she mentioned it was early in the season. Deceptive and defensive. Horrible customer service. Nantucket is fabulous. Stay somewhere other than the Summer House Cottages.

Disgusting, run down, not maintained and dirty- a sad remnant of what it must have been at one point given website pictures. Pool closed due to unsanitary conditions. No one, save JB, knew what was going on. Used glasses and dishes lying about everywhere. Mold. This is a place that you don’t walk around barefoot. Will never go there again. To top it off, I got a shock turning the light on in bathroom. No lightbulbs in any lamps. The whole thing was ridiculous.

Leading with the positive. Location is simply over the top perfect for a getaway to unplug. Literally no cell coverage on the beach. Amazing views of sunrise on the beach. Quaint walks through Nantucket’s cutest town - Sconsit. Charming old school cottages in concept. But boy it’s a missed opportunity. The cottages are run down - runny toilet, broken sink, crooked bedside lamps, tv doesn’t work, AC is weak. The service is hilariously bad. Hard to figure out who is in charge or accountable. Hard to find anyone to help or answer simple questions. They offer shuttles from their inn’s in town yet have only three beach chairs to offer and no one offering to set up your umbrella. ( apparently they started the summer with 10 but the unaccountable help couldn’t seem to bother to retrieve them from the beach so 7 have disappeared) The pool area has bags of trash, the grass has not been cut and umbrellas are also hard to find. This place is family run which they could use as an asset to make it feel charming and quirky. Alas it just feels over priced and poorly managed. Perhaps come for the $29 burger and the live guitar player and not the $675 a night cottage.

Came back to Summer Hose Cottages to stay—the accommodations at Penrose Cottage were excellent, spacious and well located. Just across to the Bistro and private beach where chair and umbrella setups awaited! The owner, Peter was more than gracious and made us feel as welcome as if family. There is no better place to stay on Nantucket— Sconset and the Summer House has it all—on the beach as I write this note!
