We had the pleasure to stay at the Sugar Beach Resort once again, this time for 10 days in February 2025. As you can tell from the fact that we were returning to this place for the 4th time within 4 years, we already enjoyed our previous stays a lot. However having said this, I must confess that I was surprised to see that our experience was even better this time. The management simply keeps improving things one would have considered to be perfect already in the past. As an example I would like to mention the new chat assistance via WhatsApp. The whole resort is still in a very appealing condition, even if the cleanliness of the beach is only second in comparison to the sister hotel La Pirogue just a few meters away. Housekeeping, room service, cleanliness of the rooms, the interior, especially the bathroom - all is simply excellent. The food in the main restaurant was truly outstanding day by day, quality, freshness, selection leaves nothing to be desired. This leads me to mention the biggest strength of the hotel: Its staff! It’s truly amazing how these people perform. They’re simply making you feel comfortable and welcome every time. To mention three lovely staff members who made ours days better every time: Christine from the restaurant - what a lovely, hard working and professional lady! Wasim, the head concierge - such a wonderful, competent person, never giving up on trying to make your stay better. And finally Arjun, our waiter most of the days in the restaurant: quick, friendly, reliable and always doing the best for us, a pure joy to be his guests. Let me finish by saying thanks for the wonderful hospitality, we‘ll be back for sure!

Been coming to Mauritius for nearly 40 years and stayed in just about every 5 star on the Island. We chose 2 weeks at Sugar Beach and I regret every minute other than the beach. It was recommended!!!!!
The hotel shows signs of wear and tear throughout and is in need of a refit, especially the rooms.
Clearly the management is poor, no visible supervision anywhere, the bars, the restaurants, beach service is diabolical. They would double their bar turnover if they improved on both their slow electronic processing of drinks bills, employed people who can actually serve you instead of waiting for a waiter who is allowed to take your order. Half the staff are just zombies not allowed to do anything but clear up.
I called a supervisor who was Mauritian and I told him what I thought and he told me that the hotel cannot find true Mauritians in the hotel industry anymore because they want to enter IT and other trades for the money.
He said they end up with immigrant labour from India in particular and they are not trained properly and in many cases they are not suitable for 5 star service.
I can verify that 100% and many other guests that I spoke with had similar issues with poor service and even language.
Not had this problem elsewhere??
Table booking was impossible the main dining area is a bun fight for lunch or dinner, no visible reception on arrival, take pot luck.
The offering in Buddha Beach bar was just too pathetic for words and you had to book days in advance due to limited table space. We ate there once and the all inclusive meal was disgusting, tasteless and cheap offering.Lunch time you pay!
The Mara Mara restaurant was better but again booking was a week in advance.
The ALL INCLUSIVE package for the resort is a bit of a con, only selected drinks, cheap South African screw top wine and beers. Only one liquor Amarula!!
Read the menu carefully if it has a dot on the side it’s inclusive, no dot and you pay. Finding the dot its an exercise in itself! Same applies in your room mini bar, all the rubbish is included, the rest you pay. Nespresso coffee pods charged extra in the room R/S 140 per capsule, I refused to pay!
Room cleaning was erratic between 9.30am and as late as 3.45pm in the afternoon, despite leaving ‘the make up room sign’at 8am every morning.
Even on check in after an all night flight from London your room will only be ready at 2pm even if you arrive at 9.30am and they let you roam the hotel at will for the next 4hours. They were still mopping the floor at 2pm when we entered or room.
We had a cyclone 28th/29th Feb which passed over the island and missed us but they took advantage by withdrawing a lot of services un-necessarily for 3 days.
We will not be back, there are far better hotels on the island, do your research and go deep into it as they are masters of disguise.
Sugar Beach at best is a 3 star resort, it has no finesse or exclusivity its a bit of 1970’s Club Med start up despite its 30 years of age and history.

Recently returned from this hotel and would like to share a few thoughts. Overall we loved Mauritius and this experience.
Arrival check in started well then we felt abandoned. Not one of the receptionist took responsibility for their guests . This was afternoon after the 14:00 check in time. Eventually after me asking again we were told that the room was ready.
Room great- grounds immaculate first impression great. Great housekeeping.
The buffet restaurant on first glance seemed good however as our two weeks wore on we started noticing that the whole space was a little tired and birds especially at breakfast took great delight in flying into restaurant and helping themselves to food from empty tables that had not been cleared.A bit off putting. Also flying into the area was being prepared. Plus point being that there was a separate cold room for fruits, salads , yogurts etc. Other restaurants were great for evening also tried Magenta at La Pirogue- great service.
Staff tried very hard but communication between guests was not great. The activities team were very young and in our opinion
inexperienced. Evening entertainment was so so... could have made more of the beach bar at sundown- we preferred bar up at La Pirogue - music and more atmosphere.
Hotel is located on a beautiful beach as others have mentioned bring water shoes- great sunsets.

A wonderful hotel in a gorgeous Island, with lovely staff and great facilities. We will return!
Pluses:
-beautiful resort superbly maintained, very clean, lovely attentive staff
-fantastic cocktails
-3 lovely restaurants including an excellent buffet restaurant. Lovely food.
Would like to see changed:
-you get a pool towel card on arrival and there are signs to not book beds with towels. In reality, it’s easy to pick up more cards and indeed towels without the cards. It needs strong management with unattended towels being removed after x amount of time.
-there is a lovely adult only quiet pool, marred by people who had hour long loud conversations or played their music loudly. Needed a member of staff to politely remind them. Most people were lovely and not selfish at all.
-we did All Inclusive which we didn’t regret, but would have been nice for AI to be just that. Understood that some bottles of wine are too expensive for that, but we just got basic South African table wine, which was good enough. We did think all the food should simply be AI but again there were dishes you had to pay supplements for.
Special thank you for service above and beyond:
-Ravi who was fantastic stocker of the mini bar
-Nalini in Mare Mare restaurant
-Om in the Patio restaurant. Promote him for goodness sake - so professional.

Beautiful hotel and beach but let done very badly by its
service especially around the bar areas and beach front 25 minutes plus for a drink not particularly busy seemed to be staff but nothing happening . thankfully reception staff wonderful and the spa is excellent worth a visit . Rooms very clean and of a high standard .
mini bar lacking a few nice snacks
buffet in the evening very good choice self service . However lunchtime hit and miss staff running around long waits at times but food excellent . Breakfast great choice but again service bad sometimes you get offered tea or coffee then it never comes there is a self service area but often machine out of order frustrating .
Snack time disappointing be better
if left out in buffet style one day we went all the tables not cleared from lunch and no staff seemed at all interested on serving us
Despite this the hotel is beautiful if the organisation of service could be improved it would be perfect sadly it's one of the worse hotels for service on a 5 star we have experienced
Also be aware if you have an early flight you cannot get into your rooms until 1400 you are offered a shower room and somewhere to change .
We did meet some lovely staff who really cared but let down by bar staff

Dissapointing stay , which is such a shame as the hotel and location is beautiful. The service and restaurant really lets the hotel down . The service is very inconsistent depending on who you get , lots of very young inexperienced staff with very little guidance. The main restaurant is chaotic with poor quality food , rude staff and had to wait for ages to be seated and for dirty plates to be cleared . Senior staff seem to be ware of the poor service in the restaurant but seem to be doing very little about it . The other restaurants in the hotel are extremely expensive for the quatity & service which is provided.
