We had a wonderful week at Secrets Huatulco. All of the staff were great but we wanted to recognize a few that really made the trip extra special. Manager of Bordeaux Wilian,Chef Angel, Chef Carlos, waiter Jose Luis, waiter Guadalupe, hostess Nathal at Market Cafe, Ricardo pool server, Asado Manager Eden, and Manager and hostess of Spice. Our room had a beautiful view from building 1. The only thing I would love to see added before I return is some regional food like Tlayudas for lunch options near the pools & beach. Until next time...

I'm going to title this: The good, the bad and the ugly.
Lets start with the good...
Yes, this resort is a bit dated but it was clean, the beds were comfortable and the staff was lovely.
In particular, I'd like to point out David who works at the Italian restaurant CinCin. Always happy to see us and speaks fluent Italian which was nice for me as my family is from Italy (even though I live in Canada) so having conversations in Italian was fun.
Royeli who works at Skybar. Always a smile, a very friendly warm person who makes a mean surprise drink!
Omar who usually works at Desires but also sometimes at Skybar. Always asks how you are and how your day was.
Mardonio who bartends at Rendevous... perfectionist with drinks
Countless others... Like Jose Julio and Salvador who work at Bearfoot Grill. Always service with a smile and so happy to see you.
The spa was lovely and have a different special each day. On Mondays, the couples massages are on special so we took advantage of that both Mondays that we were there.
The bad...
The damn pool loungers. When you check in, you sign an agreement that pool or beach loungers are not to be saved. Ever. I totally understand that even at the best resorts, this happens but they really REALLY need to start cracking down on this. My husband and I would try to go down to the pool by 10am and even then, not a chair that doesn't have a towel on it, usually sitting empty for HOURS. We actually witnessed a lady tell her friend that she had a spa appointment soon. She got up, went to her appointment and left her chair with her belongings on it for 3 HOURS. The chair next to her that she saved for her husband sat empty the entire 5 hours that we were in that pool. The staff later tell you to report it, but the last thing I want to do is spend time on my holiday to track down a staff member - come on!
The food is Meh... not the best we've had but we learned to make some adjustments. If an ingredient is on the menu, I would just ask for something to be changed and it was never a problem.
The front desk never seems to have change. We were always told to come back around 3pm for change. How does that help? We usually ended up asking one of the bartenders for change, which is sad because they have other things to do.
We booked the Lobster and Bubbles dinner one night on the beach. The champagne that was included was horrible. It literally tasted like urine. The food including the rock lobster was inedible. Seriously... don't waste your money.
The ugly...
Sadly, this is more to do with the people who are, like me, on vacation. The lack of consideration for others and for the staff. People treating the staff so poorly and thinking they are above everyone else. This resort has an average age of 60 to 70. You would think that people that age would be kind and patient. Don't get me wrong, there was very nice people there, but the rude ones really stood out. Yelling at the aquacise girl because class didn't start exactly at noon or barking at the bartender because buddy had to wait 2 minutes for another drink in his hand.
In the end it's a very quiet resort with not a lot of night life. If you can afford it, try to get a room with a swimout. We had a wonderful group of neighbors that we would gang out with there during the 3 to 5 happy hour.

Rooms were great, very clean. We would give the staff a five star rating. The only reason we rated it four stars is because the pools need some updating.

Spent February at Secrets. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Nathaly would greet us in the morning at the market cafe with a smile and our name. The restaurants were all excellent. However vegans would quickly starve. There were some items at the Market Cafe buffet but they are only open for breakfast and lunch. Even vegetarians will have a problem unless they eat seafood. Nun of the restaurants had a main course that was not meat or seafood.
We opted to pay extra for the Preferred level due to the reviews that said you would have trouble getting a restaurant reservation unless you were preferred. We arrived to discover that they had eliminated reservations with the exception of the Asian habatchi tables. As a Preferred you had access to the Preferred Lounge. It was a small room off of the Preferred office. Not a room that you would want to spend time in. You did get a top floor room with a view. The Preferred is not worth the extra cost.
The rooms and facilities were clean and maintained but dated. We were told that the resort will close for the summer to be upgraded.
Mexico has a no smoking in resort policy. Obviously some concessions have to be made. The resort has a few smoking areas away from public areas. However some smokers would work their way into the public area. Our first week we had to walk past a smoker on the lounge beside the elevator in building one. Not sure why someone would pay to spend a week sitting there and smoking unless they weren’t aware of the Mexican policy.
When arriving we were told that towels could only be left unattended on lounges by the pool for 30 minutes before they would be removed. There were no limits as to how many towels you can have. For the first two weeks when we got to the pool areas at 6:00 am all of the lounges adjacent to the pools would have towels. We were ok because we wanted the ones back from the pool edge. Often people would not arrive until 9:30 or later. They would often decide which lounges they wanted to use having put towels in different locations. The third week they started to have a person with a tablet take pictures. He said that he would assume that the people had just left for breakfast. He would come back more than 1.5 hours later and compare the towels to the picture. If there had been no activity he would remove the items and place them on a table behind the lounges. New people quickly settled on the lounges. The employee had to put up with a lot of abuse from the guests but it wasn’t long before there were lots of empty lounges in the morning. A much fairer approach.
The resort has a lot of scheduled activities during the day and shows and special events in the evenings.
We had sun for all 28 days with one 20 minute rain in the evening. It was hot with normal highs of 32 Celsius.
The resort is a little remote so a perfect spot to relax and enjoy. Rated it a 4 instead of 5 because of the dated facilities.

Swim out option is definitely the way to go, thanks Heidi for the finding us a spot.
The beach is very beautiful but hard to swim in the bay, we just walk 3 min to the left side and a quiet beach was amazing.
Tepanyaki restaurant for dinner was the best, we booked it twice.
The environment and all the guests with a great vibe.
Washrooms were always clean, dry and stocked, that is something I can acknowledge about this resort, perhaps because no kids allowed?
Overall we would like to come back again!

Our overall experience at this resort was reasonable; it was okay. That said, I would think that “resort folks” would appreciate it. Myself, I would not return but maybe that’s because I’m not a “resort guy”.
What we liked:
• Huatulco. The weather, the towns, the people. All reasons why we have travelled here a number of times.
• Secrets. The staff.
a. When we arrived we were well received. The staff was attentive, helpful, and friendly. We do not speak Spanish but everyone we encountered made us welcome.
b. Throughout our visit the staff was as helpful as possible. We never passed a staff member who did not greet us with a smile and an ‘hola’.
• We had signed on to Preferred Club Benefits and the concierge service was good. And a nice place for a pre-dinner drink in the evening.
• The resort is impressive in its entrance and lobby. Our experience was that a lot of people move through without it feeling crowded.
a. When we arrived a couple of guests told us that the resort seems very large but we would find out quickly that it has a small facility feel. They were exactly right. The layout of the resort is well thought out with lobby, restaurants, bars (Sky Bar and Lobby Bar), theatre, Coffee Bar (Cocos) and stores in one central area. Rooms flow out from the core. Easy to navigate.
• Our room (King Bed) and balcony was nicely designed and clean and comfortable.
• Restaurant availability was good. If there was a wait, it was minimal. And if not minimal there are other options one or two doors over.
• Bar/food staff at the pools and the beach work hard and nonstop.
• The gym at the spa was more than adequate. While not big it never had more than six people when I went there and usually only two or three.
• The views/vistas looking out from the rooms, the Sky Bar, Castaways, or Sugar Reef Bar are beautiful.
• The front desks were very helpful ‘breaking’ larger denominations to smaller notes. (not exchange – made sure we brought pesos from hometown currency exchange)
• I don’t know if bracelets are still a thing at AI resorts but thankful they are not a thing at Secrets.
What we didn’t
• Number one annoyance was the (lack of) monitoring of chairs at the pools. Some reviews note coming down to the pool at 10 AM and being unable to get a chair. We overlooked the right-side pool. From the balcony at 6 AM we could see there were only 4 to 8 available chairs without towels on them out of the 98 chairs around that pool. Then going to 9 AM, few chairs with towels were yet to be occupied. Some chairs didn’t get used until nearly noon.
o There is a policy that says towels and personal items will be picked up and
taken to the Lost and Fund from chairs unused for 30 minutes or more and
the chairs made available again. Never saw that happen in our ten days on
site. (Its easy to understand that the staff don't want to get into scrap with
guests but this was well beyond appropriate.)
o At the beach - Similar but only marginally better.
• Smoking. (from a smoker’s perspective) While smoking is prohibited in Mexican Resorts, Secrets has a few designated areas with ashtrays – (Sky Bar, stairs below Castaways, etc.). That said, people sometimes smoke or vape by the pool or on their balconies. We mentioned this to management as our neighbours smoked on the balcony. The only response was the neighbours took their ashtray off the patio table but continued to smoke out there. Could we address that directly with them? Sure, but that’s not our job. We’d expect the resort to enforce their rules when made aware.
• It seems that the resort is short staffed at some stations. Understood that its hard to predict where and when staff will be needed given the vagaries of the guests but, for example, the poor barista at the Coco Café was often manning the store by herself and running around like crazy. Good on her for the service she was trying to provide.
• As noted by others, the pools need repair. Numbers of the small tiles are missing and lots of cuts or scrapes from getting in or out of the pool when not at the stairs.
• The restaurants were good but somewhat hit or miss. Food would be very good one time as less so another.
• The beach
o Was closed due to a crocodile sighting. Understood that the resort has to err in
favour of caution when dealing with such issues. Nonetheless, a little more
communication and openness about the circumstance wouldn’t hurt
o The cabanas are located 50+ meters from the water at high tide and the
beach is steep.
o Not their fault but just the way it is:
the dry sand is coarse and doesn’t pack and is less friendly to walk on.
By mid afternoon the sand is so hot its near impossible to go from the
water to the cabanas without foot coverings.
With the steep beach and the swell rolling in there can be a somewhat
strong cross-current across the face of the shore.
Off Site
• Always look forward to visiting La Crucecita, Santa Cruz, and Chahue once again. Taxis are quick and reasonable
• Bocana. A pretty easy 45-minute walk from Secrets to Playa La Bocana to the east. Cabs there or back if preferred. A couple of miles of soft sandy beach. A great walk. Check out the surfers and body-boarders. A little steep at the waters edge but not bad. A couple of restaurants where the road meets the beach. Little hotels and a fancy place – Casa Bocana - for a rest and a drink. Check it out.

Our time at this resort was amazing. Definitely one of the best all inclusive we have stayed at. What made it so amazing was the staff and the care we received during our stay. My husband received two spider bites, several days apart. The second bite was much worse than the first and we felt an urgency to get it looked at. The concierge was more than helpful and the Doctor came almost immediately. The Doctor was very attentive and realized our concern. We were looked after very well.

We loved our time at Secrets Huatulco. We found everyone so pleasant and helpful but want to point out a couple that were over and above.
Nathalie at Market Cafe was amazing as the host. Knew our name after day one and made each morning very pleasant.
Otilio, served us several days and his smile and service was excellent.
Pro
Rooms are comfortable and were layed out well. (May need some upgrades). Views are incredible.
Restaurant selection is great and no reservations needed
Authentic Mexican food at several restaurants as well as seafood.
Organized check in and good service through our stay.
Good drink selection compared to many all inclusives
Beautiful views and scenery
Con
Pool needs repairs and more pool bars at other levels would be nice.
No real advantage to Preferred upgrade
Preferred had no designated chairs and premium alcohol in special bar was lacking. Other than a small bottle of rum once you got checked in no liquor in room besides Amstel beer.
Still one of the best resorts we have been to in Mexico and would certainly come back again.

Another 5 + experience at Secrets Huatulco. This resort offers the friendly, quaint type of experience that we love. It was our 4th visit and we will be back!
I want to give special thanks to a few staff that continue to make our visits wonderful.
Mariana (hostess at Castaways, Oceana). Always greets us with a smile and hug. Makes us feel like family!
Yvonne (manager at Castaways). Made me special tea with lemon and honey each morning to help me fight a cold
Kelli (bartender at preferred bar). Always greets us with a smile and remembered our nightly request fir "Baileys para mañana"
Fernanda (our UVC rep). Went above and beyond to check in regularly to see if we needed anything
Angela (server at the quiet pool) who always remembered my Coco Margarita (not martini lol).
These staff really made us feel extra special.
Now...my 1 criticism:
Please get more umbrellas for the quiet pool. For most of our stay, there were only 5 or 6 umbrellas for 15 sets of chairs at the far end of the quiet pool!

This is a very late but nonetheless emphatic thank-you to everyone at Secrets Huatulco Resort & Spa! We thoroughy enjoyed our 3-week stay there this January.
We have stayed at several Secrets resorts in the past and this was our first trip to Secets Huatulco, and again we were not disappointed.
The views were amazing and the resort staff went out of their way to ensure that we had the best vacation possible. We particularly want to mention Regina in the Concierge office, who was truly remarkable, from giving us daily forecasts and lists of activities to recommending tours and even quickly arranging for a superb upgrade.
The staff in the restaurants were always cheerful and prompt and great at making recommendations for our particular tastes. The housekeeping staff did a super job of keeping our suite clean; and the entertainment was always fun.
While this was our first vacation here, it will most certainly not be the last. We truly understand why it is that we met so many folks who have been returning year after year, for 10 years and more, to this beautiful location. We highly recommend it!

Huatulco Secrets is beautiful. First Beach I have seen in Mexico without seaweed. ( I'm sure there's a lot more, but this is the first one I have seen)
Food is pretty good, and the staff is even better! Shout out to our favorite personnel in Secrets Huatulco: Our room attendant, Yadira, who took note of how we wanted things set up in our room and did...exactly right! And to the Spa! Wonderful experience, the hydro therapy circuit was excellent. Nairobi, our favorite spa attendant who definitely went above and beyond our expectations! Super well done! Service with a heart ☺️ And to Evangeline, the pool server, who always checked in is and never left us in need. Attend the wonderful Mezcal tasting with Ingrid - it's free and Huatulco is known for its Mezcal. Restaurants were excellent. Shout out to David in Oceana, he made us laugh and enjoy the good more with his sense of humor. And to Guadalupe and her partner (sorry we didn't get your name) who always made us feel welcome when we would check in at Oceana. And to Nathalie - reception at Market Market. Service always with a smile!
The pools are set up well - one for action seekers with the swim up bar, 1 for those who just wanted to sit and cool, and 1 for those who wanted things a little more quiet. Yes, there was a screaming sound that sounded off every few minutes or so. Seems like it was generated by a commercial ice plant located off site. Noticeable at first, it gradually faced into the background. Weather was fabulous all the way! And thank you to Fernanda, Regina and Cecilia who helped us with all our questions, concerns- they made our stay even better. Lots of walking though. (Which is good in this all-inclusive resort) We will definitely be back. Seems like Secrets Huatulco is our favorite Secrets now. Just one thing though, seems like not all butter is really butter. Breakfast has fabulous butter, but the dinner service- the bread and butter service could definitely use a boost up by serving and cooking with real butter. Faux butter has different mouth feel and taste. But aside from that tiny little thing, everything was perfect.

Secrets Huatulco is set in a beautiful, quiet bay — perfect if you’re looking to relax and stay on resort. The beach is lovely, though the sand is a little coarse and not as easy for long walks compared to other bays. There’s a great little walk around the corner to a neighbouring bay that’s very quiet and worth checking out.
The location is a bit further from town, so most people stay on property once they arrive.
We stayed in a swim-out suite and would highly recommend it. It made the trip — such a great experience to have your own pool area right outside your room. It also takes the pressure off needing to find pool chairs early (although even at 60% occupancy there still seemed to be chairs available after 9am).
We also tried the Preferred Club. It’s a nice touch, but I’m not sure it’s necessary — the lounge isn’t really a spot you’d spend much time in.
Dining was easy and convenient with lots of options — and no reservations needed (except for the teppanyaki table). We really appreciated being able to walk in and be seated right away.
The spa is a must-do — the hydrotherapy circuit is the perfect way to relax and unwind.
The only downside — and it’s an annoying one — is the aggressive sales pitch for their vacation club. Like many resorts, they try to sign you up for a “special breakfast” which is really just a high-pressure timeshare presentation. It’s frustrating because they don’t take no for an answer easily — the only way to get out of it is to be direct and walk away. Not the best first impression when you’re arriving for a relaxing vacation.
Overall, Secrets Huatulco is a beautiful resort for a quiet, laid-back vacation — great service, peaceful setting, and everything you need for an easy, relaxing getaway.

Especially want to call out a few of our servers, Angel Avila, Andrea, Carlos Ramos and Mario Salmeron. More like friends than just servers by the end of our stay. Great facilities and natural beauty!

When you go, you’ll come to notice that this resort does not have all the bells and whistles - drink selections are so so, not all the staff have strong English, some facilities could use some upgrades, some meals hit/miss etc. This spot is, however, a great alternative if looking to avoid the crowds and draw backs of the big spots located in PV and CUN. We booked this place on a whim, stayed during xmas, and did not regret it!

Highlight recommend.

Best resort we've ever been to! Rooms so beautiful and clean. Food was absolutely delicious everywhere. Drink service at the beach was really good. Alejandro gives the best sailing lessons with his funny, patient ways. Can't wait to come back next year!!
Tennis, pool and beach activities were the highlight

We just spent 7 days at Secrets HUX. It was an amazing trip. Gabriel greeted most of our crew (some scattered) on arrival and gave us a thorough rundown of practically every aspect of the resort.
On the first morning, two of us showed up at the tennis courts around 7am and thoroughly enjoyed playing with Alejandro and Daniel. Go early before the sun hits the courts. Daniel was awesome. Alejandro holds a special place in my heart as he was offering some good tips and spent some time with my wife giving her some pointers. We spent every morning at the courts and by 8am the highlight of my day had already happened. That said. We spent many hours down by the pool and beach and engaged with the entertainment and activity organizers (Alejandro, Daniel and others were so fun) in water vball, football throw and so many more activities.
The bartenders and servers were awesome. Heriberto, Carlos and the others were fast, efficient and friendly. Hats off to them.
We will be back next year.

First time visiting. Staff was friendly and willing to assist. Our service at Market Cafe was exceptional due to Capitana Nathaly and Adriana. They were attentive to our needs and provided service without requeat. The facilities were well kept. Room service was spotty and did not always show up.
