I really didn’t want to writes this as the resort itself is beautiful and the staff for the most part are fantastic. The food and entertainment were excellent and I would have certainly returned next year. However, the fact that they still haven’t refunded my deposit, despite numerous communications has left a real sour taste in my mouth. Nearly 3 weeks after being told it would be 72 hours is not a good luck for the Royalton Brand.

I have been to many resorts in Mexico over the years and this one would definitely be at the bottom of my list. This is simply not a five star resort- I’d put it at a 3 maximum. It was Spring break when we travelled and the resort was absolutely packed. I do not think this resort should operate at full capacity as it felt like we were herds of animals fighting for what would be easy to access at any other resort I’ve been to. First, the food. The food experience is very bad. So bad in fact my husband experienced horrible food poisoning. I mean violently vomiting. He was completely out of commission for the majority of the trip. We believe it was from the Taj Indian restaurant. I think when attempting to feed 4000 people at once, the standards of cleanliness and food preparation are largely compromised. This definitely ruined our trip. The “best food” we had was a bowl of “melted cheese” at the Mexican restaurant. I waited over an hour in line for a hamburger at the food truck and if you want coffee in the morning, be prepared for a very long wait at the cafe. The buffet was wild- I’ve actually never seen such chaos. Between having to set an alarm at 12am to book a dinner reservation and waking up at 6am to reserve spots at the pool, this was not a restful vacation. After 7:30am there is no chance of getting a spot anywhere. There is a lot of seaweed on the beach, but they do have tractors that try to remove most of it in the morning. The water itself is just not the blue waters you envision when booking a trip like this. It is incredibly murky. One day we found a spot on the beach and after a few hours we were kicked off the beach by staff as we did not realize the section of the beach was for “diamond club” members only. There were no signs or any indication that this was for DC customers. After spending a couple days in the room due to food poisoning, all we wanted was to rest by the ocean. It was embarrassing to be kicked off the beach due to our “lack of status”. Of course, if we had known it was for Diamond Club members, we would not have gone there. We attempted to upgrade to diamond club for a potentially better experience but were told we could not. We didn’t even want to switch rooms… we really just wanted a quieter place to rest after the food poisoning experience but we were declined. It felt very much like an “us vs. them” thing. Non diamond club members are treated like second class citizens. We found a spot at the pool and when using the washroom close by, I found that the stall had been completely painted with vomit. Like all over the floor, up the walls, etc. This went unattended by staff for hours. We had to warn anyone who tried to go in not to. I have no idea when it was eventually cleaned, but in the hours we were there, not one staff person came. A few pros: The staff we interacted with were very nice. Just don’t get trapped into them selling you anything. They’ll offer you things in return like massages or cabana rentals. We had an Expedia rep on site named Krystel. She was absolutely incredible. She continuously offered to help my husband while he was sick and checked in with us regularly. I can confidently say she went above and beyond. She did everything she could within her control to make our trip better, including a couple lovely surprises in our room. My otherwise negative review has nothing to do with Krystel, as she was the only good thing about this resort. We will not be returning to this resort, nor will we be recommending this resort to anyone. Please use caution when booking this resort. I appreciate everyone has a different experience and I’m happy for those who enjoyed their time. But spending half your trip in your room vomiting due to food poisoning was less than enjoyable. There are much better resorts in the Cancun area.

Alfonso at the Italian restaurant was wonderful. The food has been wonderful and the service has been amazing. Elui and Mr G have been excellent butlers. We have especially enjoyed the Italian restaurant and the workers there. They have all been so accommodating.
