Overall our stay was very nice. Jesus Torres, Irving and Eduardo Butlers were all AMAZING!! All it took was a quick text and they had everything arranged and reservations made. Truly wonderful people. All the staff was very polite and helpful. The pool area needs more seating. When going to the pool at 8 in the morning, all chairs were "spoken" for, as there were towels on the chairs to save them.

This is a well maintained and clean hotel though obviously there are some signs of wear and tear. Staff are friendly and helpful. Diamond club definitely worth it, gives access to different restaurants and beach area. Any problems the staff quickly resolve. Few criticisms one being it can sometimes be a little hard to find shade. On windy days there is some seaweed but quickly cleared by staff. Weddings on the beach every few days. Drinks are branded and good. Taxi’s are very expensive.

What a great time! Service was excellent, food 'clean' and fresh tasting, not like in the states. Manuel - lobby bar, Godoy - brkfst buffet and Luis - stocked room fridge were our favorite staff, they went out of their way to give best service!

TLDR - I’d rate this a 3.5/5. Beach was excellent, a la cartes were a major let down, rooms were nice, didn't care for the pool layouts, service was hit & miss with a lot more misses. Review will focus on staying as a regular tier guest. Beach - 9.5/10 Not sure what some of the reviews are complaining about but the beach was fantastic, pictures speak a 1000 words. Barely any seaweed, powdery fine sand, zero rocks and decently clear water with some fish swimming around. Lounge chairs were hard to get, no one ever bothered you trying to sell stuff. Pool - 6/10 Didn't care for the main pool layout as nowhere near enough seating and just all around didn't like the layout, main activities were always done here. We stuck to the "infinity pool" by the kids area that didn't have enough water in it to be an infinity pool, would prefer to see the ocean from it but the grounds were built up to much to see out. Room - 7/10 Rooms were nice and ours had held up nicely over the years, we got stuck with two queen beds instead of a king. Lots of movie channels, fridge was always stocked with Coors Light and Pepsi products. Worst part was that the AC is reliant on an occupancy sensor so if you left the room it would turn off and then your coming back to a hot room (be creative and stick a kleenex on a bandaid over it with the ceiling fan, again not very 5 star is it). I wouldn't bother booking an ocean view again. Note that even if your a Marriott status it won't apply if you book thru a vacation package. Resort 7/10 The hotel is definitely showing some wear over the years and really it would only take some painting to freshen things up on the outside. Wifi is available everywhere, free, always connected and no password required. Grounds are nicely maintained and plenty of beautiful palm trees and easy to walk around. The app is a must and even then it was hard to filter out the events thru the day, the one day they were carving up a whole tuna and handing out sushi/sashimi and I would have never known if I hadn't of walked by. White party is Friday nights on the beach weather permitting, ours was at the pool. Environmental - 9/10 Resort is doing a great job of eliminating single use plastics for guests. All cups are either glass or reusable hard plastic. Didn't see any single use plastic. Not much for wildlife other than the same iguanas. Service 4/10 Table drink service was basically non existent, lobby bar is not your traditionally sit in a large lobby area and have drinks but just a small room with chairs around the bar with way more people than bar tenders. Restaurant service was meh, had really good service once in the Caribbean for lunch. Had drink service twice at the infinity pool and tipped accordingly since he was great. There would be times where there were no cups or ice available at any of the bars so you couldn't even get a drink. Food & Drink - 4/10 The a la cartes were the biggest let down and were well below Mexico standards especially if your going to call yourself a 5 star. The steak at Hunters was OK, don't even bother getting it from Armadillo's as it tasted like soggy boiled meat. Italian was basically kids food with no good sauces for the pasta and the pizza's could be decent but were well undercooked and soggy. The teppanyaki asian was great as always but hard to get into. Pretty much all restaurants required a reservation except we got into Hunters once without one, use the app and try refreshing it a couple times and sometimes it'll show an opening randomly. The buffet was decent if you stick to the live cooking stations, had fresh shrimp and scallops, wok fried noodles/veggies, egg station was always to busy to wait in line in the mornings, bacon was good, burgers were great tasted just like a DQ burger if thats your thing. The snack bars by the pools were actually pretty good, the chicken tenders were great but were spicy and gave bad indigestion. Drinks were decent, best selection was at the lobby bar but they would continuously run out of certain popular bottles and you wouldn't see them restocked the rest of the week. They had Don Julio blanco once day and that was it. Entertainment - 6/10 Staff did a good job doing the nightly show at the theatre location but wasn’t really our thing. There was usually some sort of live dance/music in front of the main pool and then after a live band set up off to the side. Would I return? Yea I think so if the price was right.

Great pool and beach service
The pool guys are amazing!! They made the trip fantastic. Always taking care of us and setting up our chairs and beds. Alejandro, Rodrigo, Jose and Joel deserve great recognition for a job well done! We are very grateful for them in helping make our birthday trip greater!

I am literally sitting in the Diamond Club at the Royalton Riviera Maya writing this to give you our experience and urge you to not pay for Diamond Club or even come to this hotel. We have been here for less than 14 hours and we have seen more of the Diamond Club desk just trying to get a room and get in touch with our butlers. I am warning you do not come to this hotel. As a Marriott Titanium Elite and paying for Diamond Club it has been a horrible experience. We didn’t get our correct room at check out, come back the next morning to get your room and the people at the club had no idea what we were talking about. Spent 2 hours getting that right. Still don’t have a room. At the same time they took our luggage out of our room and one of my shots that has to be refrigerated and they can’t find it. I could go on and on but do NOT book here if you want elite service and want to enjoy your vacation.

We have been to Mexico 15 times over the years. This is the worst experience we have ever encountered from a 5 star resort. Arrival: We arrived at the resort by shuttle at 3:00PM. Were shuttled into the check-in area. Checked in and was told we had to scan a code to book restaurants. Put the wrist bands on and then I had to ask how we get to our room. Was told to see the bellman. Went to find them and he walked with us a few feet and pointed down a hallway and said if you walk down to the end of the hall your room is down there. **NEVER HAD THIS HAPPEN BEFORE**. Then we get to our room and the wrist bands that have the opener for the door in them don't work. So back I went to get this resolved. So just getting into our room was almost 40 minutes. Room: This resort is a little worn. All the amenities that you need provided. The bed was hard. Had water for brushing our teeth only 1 day. The maid took the bottles but did not replace it ever. It did have a fridge that was stocked daily so that was a plus. Pools: There are a number of pools at this resort that are for everyone and some for the Diamond Club if you want to upgrade to that section of the resort. If you were not up and out before 7 you did not get an umbrella as they were few and far between in the normal section of the resort. Towels were hardly ever laid out. You had to go into the little room and dig out your own. No one was ever around there all week. Bar Service: This was the most pathetic thing at this resort. There was only 1 person working an entire section all week so very hard to get a drink. You'd think that if you tipped them well they would come back....Nope!! Had to spend most of our time standing in line at the bar to get a drink. Sometimes it was faster to go back up to your room and get the beer from the fridge. There were several times where they had no glasses and had to run around the resort to collect and then "Wash" if you can call it that, them quickly so that they could get drinks for people. Food: This is by far the worst food I have ever had in Mexico. Buffet: It did have something for everyone but it was most often cold. Even the pasta bar was not good and that is hard to screw up. I will say the burger at lunch was pretty good but it was a bit of a wait to get your turn as it was by far the most popular spot. Italian: This was by far the most disappointing of all the restaurants. We actually got up and went to the buffet as this food was inedible. We had the Osobouko flavor was way off. I again tried the Penne with Bolonaise. It had no flavor and was watery. I did hear that some people thought the pizza was good though but did not try it from there. Mexican: You would think this would be the best food on the resort. Nope. I had shrimp tacos. It was little canned shrimp in a taco with a bit of cheese. My husband had the Fajitas and they were ok only. Steak: This was bar far the best meal we had all week. It was not Canadian beef but it was at least edible. So tried to book this a second time but could not get in. Did not try to Carribean. Staff: In general they were not on their game as far as customer service. Many times we were seated at a restaurant and took forever even to get water. They were working hard at trying to keep an older resort as best as they could. I will give them that. On the day before we were leaving we were told that this resort was bought by the Marriott group. So I don't know if they stripped the staff down to bare minimum or if the staff were just not happy but was not the best experience we have received in our previous visits for sure. If I were you I would spend my money elsewhere as there are way better resorts to choose from. Pools - 4* Food - 1* Cleanliness - 4* Overall Experience - 3* at best Entertainment - 3 - 4* depending on your tastes

Stayed in the Diamond club swim out room Jan. 9th-16th. Rooms: rooms are great the swim out rooms are nice but recommend trying to book one closer to the beach in Building 6 we were in building 3 so your view is blocked by one of the restaurants. Rooms were very clean towels always fresh and mini bar well stocked. Food: As good as I have had at any AI ate at all but one of the available restaurants. Highly recommended the Hibachi experience as well as the culinary experience Tips: bring US $ or Pesos the staff here work very hard to cater to every guest $1/2 drink and $5-$10 for meals. Diamond Club: the best part of upgrading to Diamond Club is the butler service. If you are travelling with just adults I would recommend upgrading to Adults Only side as there is a nice private lounge with higher end liquors. Butler: best part of the trip ask to have Alonso as your butler he will not disappoint you. He is very attentive and does what he can to make your stay memorable . Beach: beach is nice some seaweed but they try to clean it up early in the AM Pools: the chair game is similar to any other AI the only negative was the week we were there there was a mother/daughter that kept stealing peoples belongings. Almost everyone in the resort knew about them including the staff yet they were allowed to continue to stay, Really was the only negative part of our stay. The only other issue with Pools was they were cold. Overall: great stay would recommend

Rooms were comfy. Fully stocked fridge and snacks. Rooms were cleaned daily and towels restocked. Around the clock room service. Dining options were good. Wonderful and friendly staff. We had Nora and Cesar as our butlers. They were excellent and available whenever we needed them.
The fitness center was amazing. A variety of clean and functioning equipment with two floors. Friendly and kind staff of Luis, Brandon, Eddy, and Josh make the fitness center very welcoming and comfortable like your home gym. Best resort/hotel fitness center.

Every aspect of our stay was disappointing. We reserved a Diamond Club room, but were greeted at check in by a time share salesman instead of our butler. We eventually met our butler(s) 24 hours after check-in. They were very nice, and as accommodating as they could be, but seemed over-worked like everyone else there. Reserved a swim out, but the sun never touched the patio and the water was too cold to actually use it. In addition, the stench (from the sewage system?) was so bad that we couldn’t utilize the patio at all. You get to choose a bottle of liquor for your stay. Our stay was 5 days and we received our bottle before heading to dinner on the third day. There are a few bars on property, but be prepared to wait a while because of inadequate staffing. Lastly, on the subject of liquor, we ordered vodka sodas but were given tequila sodas EVERY SINGLE TIME, until we ordered a vodka soda and a tequila soda. Finally got the correct order. Ordered room service for breakfast for 4 days of our stay, and it was only delivered twice; no phone call, no answer when transferred to the room service extension. Orders were placed on the Royalton app. When you check-in, you’re given a $600 voucher for activities. It comes with time share strings, don’t use it. We had the feeling like we were constantly being hustled. From the voucher/time-share aspect, to the dining experiences. We made do out of principle, but anything worth having comes with an up charge. I was glad to leave that place. The food is ok, but the portions are small. The buffet saved the day a couple times. That was probably the best part of the stay (and we are not buffet people).

Royalton Riviera resort - Cancun Mexico.. We visited in mid to late March 2025 which was during spring break so that made it busy.. Overall, an excellent stay and great value for money. We stayed in room 8239 which is a great choice with a pool view and fairly close to everything. The lobby is at level 3 of all buildings via the walkway. . ——— ⁃ Pro’s: Lovely room with a big comfy king-size bed and whirlpool bath plus Walk-in shower for two people. The furnishings were a little tired but nothing to worry about everything was functional and worked well… The swimming pools were large and heated to a nice temperature. Busy but that’s what we expect for such a large resort… The lobby bar had a great atmosphere and a brilliant place to meet people and have a chat. Service was slow sometimes, but that didn’t spoil it for us. Large selection of drinks and generous measures, especially if you asked for extra shots… The beer was mostly draft ‘Dos Equis’ but occasionally they had cans too… Restaurants were brilliant. We really enjoyed the food and found the service good in all places. Restaurant reservations were easy enough to do on the app if you did them early in the mornings.…. If you struggle with this then ask your tour rep to assist as they helped us make several bookings…. We ate at different a la carte places each night and just used the buffet for breakfast and sometimes lunch. .. Breakfast brilliant selection especially if you’ve got there early to avoid the busy times…. The food was lovely if a little cooler than we are used to. .. Staff were all helpful and friendly and there were some very hard-working people. They were a little understaffed in places but nothing too serious… Beach was close by and we spent a couple of days at the beach bars which were good but did get busy with long lines occasionally… Great mini bar service in the rooms they restocked it daily and just leave a note out for what you want. It’s more than generous… Housekeeping good daily service although the times were very variable. It’s a quick cleanup and bed making but that’s all we needed… Maintenance service, when we had something go wrong in the room they were there to fix it within an hour or so very good….. General hotel is large (840 suites) but well organised and there are plenty of lifts and escalators to get you between the levels. .. We found the bar and lobby area particularly nice to relax with lots of chairs and an occasional waiter taking drinks. Otherwise just go to the lobby bar and get your drinks and then relax in the lounge chairs overlooking the pool and ocean… There is a lookout point upon the fifth floor of building nine which is worth a visit to get photographs of the coastline and beach area… Key bracelets are excellent and much better than key cards. .. Room safe free and easy to use… ———- ⁃ Recommendations before you travel: Bring a yeti cap and lots of straws as they don’t have them in the resort or much of Mexico in general. .. Bring what you need as the gift shop has exorbitant prices and it’s basically daylight robbery… Research trips before you come - we booked ours through TripAdvisor independently of the hotel and TUI and found this made more sense… Book your room in advance it may cost you $100 more, but if you can select what you want beforehand, it takes and stress away. We checked in reasonably quickly and we given the room we wanted and paid for. … If checkin is busy they give you a buzzer to call you back and you can go to the bar lounge while waiting - great idea. .. Get to know the lifeguards near the pool and chat to them about getting sunbeds you have to reserve them early but they would usually keep an eye and stop them getting cleared, if you’re back regularly…. Don’t expect a five star resort it’s not that but it’s 3/4 with great service so you will spot some rough edges, but nothing takes away the functionality. … Bring some small dollar bills for tipping we thought the dollar bills were easier than pesos and found it nice to leave a couple of dollars for good bar service and a few more dollars for good restaurant service….. The people that really work hard here appreciated a few tips…. Bring anti histamines tablets or cream as treatment for prickly heat rash…. ———- ⁃ Cons The resort is quite isolated and down a very long drive of approximately 1.5 miles that is not walkable….. If you want to leave the resort I’d recommend using the trips for this as the hotel taxis are expensive and they don’t allow Ubers inside… Nibbles bar for snacks is convenient by the pool quite frankly the food was horrible - Stale dried burgers and dogs and very little choice…. Seaweed on the beach was there and not really getting cleared when we went. If you don’t mind stepping over it and get me in what looks like a dirty ocean then that’s okay…. Sunbed situation, you have to get up early to get a bed and Most people do. You can’t reserve them all day as people will remove your things…. I don’t disagree with this but you do need to be able to leave to get breakfast and for the occasional drinking at the bars…. Get to know the staff and they will probably help you…. The pool area has rusty metal shade structures and a damaged roof that spoil the appearance and are in real need of replacement throughout the hotel. … It’s a busy resort and if you’re coming here for a quiet relaxation, peaceful time with no noise you’re in the wrong place…. It’s lively and there are a lot of young people but they are having fun and having a good time and I didn’t spoil it for us…. The gift shop is ridiculously priced and should be avoided at all costs…. 10USD for a small tin of Pringles £18 USD for a plastic cup !!! (Which broke)…. We had to involve the hotel guest service manager (Miguel) involved to resolve a gift shop refund complaint which he handled very professionally. They line the cost of medical service are very high. We have to see the doctor and that cost $170 US plus ridiculous price for medicines and creams. Check your insurance excess…. Children’s area seemed good for them although we didn’t spend time in that area the children that were here seem to be having a great time…. ———- ⁃ Summary. We would definitely return great value on the standard tariff without the need to upgrade to diamond or hideaway. …. Thanks Royalton staff. 😎
