It's a cute smaller hotel with rooms and suites and decent Snorkeling off the beach.
Breakfast is a scaled down version of buffet style. Onsite restaurant is also open for lunch and dinner, food is decent though waiting times are longer than we are used to in US. There are also several other places to eat lunch and dinner walking distance from the hotel.
Swimming club next door is usually very loud with music and jet skis but only during the day.
Beach is sandy and swimming is good though entering the water is rocky (swimming shoes recommended).
There was plenty of lounges and shade.
We stayed in the oceanview suite on the 2nd floor right in front of an outdoor beach bar (they play music until 10:30pm and close at 11pm), not ideal for us but we thought it will be OK if they got quiet by 11pm.
Unfortunately it wasn't the case - there was a large family group that was very drunken loud every night still sitting at the bar until 1-2am. We complained to the night staff who begged them to leave or be more quet but they didn't care.
After 3 sleepless nights we ended up moving to a smaller suite with worse view just so we could get some sleep.
I think that management could've been more strict about enforcing the quet time after 11pm. Fyi, we were told that this loud drunky group comes every year at mid or end of February so beware.

Traveled to Cozumel for my birthday. We enjoyed our stay. The hotel was quaint, quiet and beautiful. My room was as pictured, beachfront with a beautiful view. The staff was so courteous and the food and service was good. Location is in the northern part of the island away from the hustle and bustle of the ports but very easy to get to! I would return and recommend. Oh and the most beautiful sunsets ever!

This was our first stay at Playa Azul, but definitely not our last! We split our stay up for 3 nights in an all inclusive, and 3 nights in Playa Azul, because an all inclusive gets redundant after a few days, and there are several restaurants in town we like to enjoy each visit. The resort was a pleasant surprise when we first arrived, and delivered consistently more and more as each day sped by. Honestly, this is the first resort that felt so easy to enjoy and our stay seemed like it was over far too quickly. The entire place just exudes a relaxing atmosphere that's effortless to melt into. The property shows a bit of age, but that just adds to it's charm, and many of the guests we chatted with have been returning for years, so we knew we were in a good place!
Our room was clean and very comfortable, the air conditioning was incredible! The cleaning staff are always active and do an incredible job. We sheepishly walked on freshly mopped floors near the elevator and in the lobby almost every day (sorry!). The staff is very warm and welcoming, reception went above and beyond to help with a few calls to our car rental co. and communicated with other properties for us. The service staff were always attentive and prompt!
Breakfast was great every morning with plenty of variety to suit even picky pallets. We found it to be a great mix of continental offerings with a bit of local tastes to accentuate the experience. We grabbed a chicken quesadilla for a snack one afternoon, and had dinner there on our last evening. The quesadilla was BY FAR the best I've ever eaten (amazing salsa verde!), and the dinner was excellent all around. I'll be calling the front desk shortly in hopes that they will give me a general idea of what was in the chicken marinade besides garlic, it was seriously that good!
The beach front was gorgeous with crystal clear water, and the chairs are spaced out enough that you could find quiet if you sought it, or be as social as you like. There was never a shortage of space to relax in. Relaxation and quiet is the main attraction here, and pretty much unavoidable (just fine with us!). This was our fourth time on the island and I've never felt this refreshed and "unwound" in our previous visits. Our jacuzzi was it's own mini spa and we lingered in it daily. As a result of all this, I seriously found some of the best sleep in my adult life here!
The ownership change has kept the property quiet, but we were told the changes such as decorating for Halloween and the party that ensued were newly established and a very welcome attraction for us! The Día de los Muertos ofrenda was very beautiful and quite tasteful! The property also hosts a lot of wild life, and the turtle sanctuary right outside the front doors was wonderful to observe and reminded us how concentrated the effort for wildlife preservation is on the island. Coexistence is a way of life here.
Overall our stay was a wonderful experience we will welcome yearly or biyearly for many return visits! We hope everyone enjoyed the candy! Anyone who visits should research the tipping culture and show apt appreciation, as it is truly deserved here.

This was our favorite hotel during our 10 visit to Mexico. The location for this hotel is perfect. The little beach is great for swimming and snorkeling. The beach bar is staffed all day and evening. There are plenty of beach chairs and a great little pool. The included breakfast is excellent. The staff are all very helpful. The hotel is not new, and it is a little "lived in", but it was very very clean. We felt super comfortable and if we ever come back to Cozumel, this is where we will look to stay.

We stayed here for a week in May and really enjoyed it! Very clean and comfortable room with very effective air conditioning, we felt well taken care of by the staff… fantastic buffet breakfast with eggs to order, good lunch/dinner options, nice little gift shop with meds and snacks. There’s a couple of beach areas and it’s nice and quiet. There isn’t the noise and chaos of downtown but it’s a 10 minute, $10 ride down there. We will definitely stay here again!

Amazing location not what it use to be!

I booked a week to come diving with my dad! The location and the view is outstanding. The staff are pleasant and helpful but do not go above the average. The one take away is that they are not flexible and the service for food and drinks is extremely slow! Ordering at the bar or beach will take 30 min or more. I ordered ice cream and my dad ordered a meal. He waited a rage 30 mi. He got his food, eat it and I still didn’t have the ice cream! On vacation waiting isn’t huge if it is crazy busy but it was quite slow! Also helping with any food accommodations for medical needs did not seem to be a priority! We needed to leave for diving each morning at 7:15am and breakfast was advertised to open at 7:00am. I did not see this as an issue as we were planing to eat and dash but morning after morning they told us they were not open yet and it would be 15 minutes more or so to open! When I explained my dad was diabetic and just needed to grab food before we leave each morning. I was not asking for them to open early or prepare anything special but just that we could get something before having to go diving as advertised! The staff was pleasant enough and I offered to pay even just to get something like a banana and bread so he would not be sick! I gave them $30 dolors as a tip for the help and returned the next morning at 7:00am the next day. once again I was told they didn’t have food ready yet! The last two days he decided just not to dive because of this! I have to say I wish this was not a deal breaker for me because everything else about this hotel I loved! The desk attendant was very helpful and the cleaning staff did a very nice job! Quiet, sweet, clean, beautiful, amazing beach front! Come but plan to wait! Hope this helps!

Our second trip was great. The reason we took away one star was b/c there was a significant problem with our room upon check-in and we had to do some hard negotiating to get them to move us. The room was completely unfit for anyone to stay in and we were told that they were planning on taking it out of commission to make repairs, yet a day later we noticed that someone else had been moved in there. So after much complaining and demanding to be moved, we stayed in a suite for one night and then moved to a room in the category we paid for throughout the rest of the stay. The ocean views are good from any room and not just those on upper floors. The suite had a great balcony with nice furniture, but I wouldn't opt to stay in one in the future. The living area was at the back and had no view so we didn't spend any time there.
The remainder of the trip was excellent. Some staff members that deserve recognition are Darwin, Victor, Jesus, Yassir, Roberto, Guadalupe, Francisco, Armand, and the housekeeping staff. These are really a fantastic group of people who are so kind and helpful, including when I was sick for about 24 hours.
The snorkeling near this hotel can't be beat. We would drop in the water down near Buccano's and drift all the way down to El Cozumeleno. Early morning and late afternoon were the best times. We saw tiny stingrays as well as one of the biggest ones I've ever seen in addition to eel, barracuda, and tons of fish.
Breakfast is always plentiful and we ate at the restaurant for other meals much more so than last year b/c I wasn't feeling well. There is good variety on the menu and light fare if needed. We loved chatting with and getting to know Jesus!
Don't miss the spa (reviewed on their separate page--Savia Spa). The staff are so well trained. I was able to request the same therapist as last year and she did not disappoint.
After settling the problem with our room, our stay was the perfect relaxation that we needed in a lovely setting. We're starting to make annual trip to Cozumel and are happy to have found Playa Azul :)

This was our 2nd time staying at Playa Azul. The buffet breakfast is nice. The lights on the water at night for swimming was very pleasant. Staff always friendly. This hotel could use a refresh....some of the drywall is cracked, and the entire place could use a new coat of paint. The throw rugs in the bedrooms are filthy and should be thrown away. We had to get a new duvet as the one on our bed was stained. And who needs a heavy duvet in the tropics - way too warm for that. And how many pillows does one need on a bed? The desk chair could use some felt on the bottoms of the chair legs, as they were very noisy when one moved the chair. A dry rack outside for hanging up wet swimsuits or towels would be nice.

A really nice and clean hotel with good service and food. The included breakfast was great. Drinks are pretty small and costly, so I went with beer. The beach area is pretty nice with really beautiful water. A/C worked great and the maid service was good. BOOK DIRECTLY WITH THE HOTEL ON THEIR WEBSITE FOR THE BEST RATES. We spent almost double by going through Expedia. This part of Cozumel is really quiet with many older folks and families. We met several couples who had been coming here for over 10 years, so many repeat customers. Recommended!

We have been to the beach club every time we go but this was our first stay at Hotel Playa Azul. We loved this place as it was smaller and more intimate. No crazy crowds and plenty of space. We stayed in the Grand Suite Hot tub Ocean View Suite that was comfortable, clean and spacious with a large balcony. We were on the 4th floor and the views are amazing! Housekeeping did an amazing job.
We had a few lunches and couple dinners here and they were delicious! We had Fish Tacos, Ceviche, Burgers, Coconut Shrimp and Fish fingers. We are not big breakfast eaters, so we only had coffee most days but did have it a couple of days. They have a little bit of everything, fruit, breads, cereals, juice, breakfast potatoes, scrambled eggs, an omelet station and a few other things.
Every person there was so warm and welcoming. If you need anything or want assistance with tours, car rental or any other recommendations, just ask them.
Special thank you to the staff who treated us like family and made our trip so special!
Roberto, Kermit, Darwin, Martin, Karla and Ivan ~You all made us feel so welcome and we had so much fun. We were so sad to leave and look forward to coming back!

Went as a little getaway, as a trip within a trip. We had been staying in Playa del Carmen for a month and wanted a break from the noise, heat and crowds. Picked this place, directly booked for two nights, got there and immediately extended for another.
A 45 minute ferry ride from Playa del Carmen, $10 taxi. USD works just fine, you can use either currency.
A little worn around the edges but locally owned with some character. Not a "motel". We got a "suite", right on the water, gorgeous view. Check them out, the price differential is small and the extra space and amenities are worth it. I believe all rooms have an ocean view, though.
Nice people, good food, very accommodating, a couple of additional funky (in a good way) restaurants right across the street. Felt very secure and safe.
We will return.
