Check in went smoothly and once we realized we had a room with no balcony, we were fortunately able to upgrade to one with a balcony. Rooms were clean and bed comfortable. Fridge stocked daily. Only room issue was a nasty smell from the shower and sink drains. Old hair, etc? Two calls for service did not resolve the issue so just kept the plugs closed. Much better. Service at the buffet was exceptional. Man they all work like crazy. Shout out to Jesus for getting us tea every day! Beach was wonderful for long walks, just watch for the washed up puffer fish. Pool is showing some wear but was heated. Overall a great relaxing stay.

My husband and I loved our five night stay. We don’t tend to book all inclusive but had a good rate and we couldn’t have been more surprised at how delicious the food was. I didn’t go for breakfast but my husband did and he said it was great. We only had lunch at the buffet by the pool and it was great!! The freshest and most flavourful ingredients and a nice variety. We didn’t book a restaurant for any of our dinners tho we qualified for two. We were completely happy with the variety and quality at the buffet and the main buffet restaurant is so pretty to be in. The views at the property are stunning. We had a ground floor room with little patio looking at a lawn and the pool. We felt so comfortable sitting and relaxing there. The beach is wide and long and the sunsets incredible. The pool is warm and there is a range of activities. My husband played pool and beach volleyball. I’d definitely stay again!

First, I’ve been to Mexico four times before, but this was my first time in Puerto Vallarta. Transportation was smooth. We checked in, but they gave us a room with two beds, despite us being a couple of 11 years. We didn’t mind it too much, but the room smelled strongly of fresh paint. We complained, and they took care of it quickly, which was a positive. On the first day, we had the buffet, and it was good. However, the second day we made a reservation at the Mexican restaurant. I ordered the queso fundido with chorizo, and it was the worst I’ve ever had! The cheese had a plastic-like consistency, as if it was microwaved. My fiancé ordered mixed meats.He always finishes his food, but not this time, which says a lot. We complained, and the waiter explained that some equipment in the kitchen had broken, preventing proper heating. That explains why the food was cold, but why not post a sign saying, “Kitchen closed for dinner due to technical difficulties”? Instead, we wasted our time and had a terrible dining experience. We also attended the “presentation,” which we’re obligated to do for 90 minutes. They were clear and respected our decision, which was a relief, but I don’t understand why the resort would put guests like us, an engaged couple, into a room with two beds and no ventilation for an entire week if the goal is to upsell them on a more luxurious property. Why not place us in the beautiful property to begin with, so we can experience what we could have for future vacations? It seems like a poor sales pitch to me. Moving forward, there were barely any activities during the day. There was no music at the pool. This is the first time I’ve been to a resort without music by the pool after 1 p.m. Vacation is supposed to be fun! One other thing: we went to the hot tub, and five minutes later, we were kicked out in front of everyone because it was for “special members.” There was no sign indicating this, and while we wouldn’t have minded, it was embarrassing. They could have told us in private. The service at the buffet was also poor. Everyone else was offered coffee, but we weren’t. The ladies with purses were given purse stands, but I wasn’t. There was a day when all the waiters were serving water to everyone but us. I told my fiancé I felt discriminated against because we aren’t white. We paid for this vacation just like everyone else, but we were consistently overlooked. The only restaurant where the food was amazing was the Japanese restaurant, and the service there was fantastic. I’m shocked by how many people think the food is incredible. Perhaps it’s because many Americans come to Mexico and the resorts try to cater to them? It’s unfortunate. If you want the same food you get at home, just stay home. We even told one of the waiters, “This isn’t Mexican chorizo,” and he replied, “No, this is American sausage.” Are you serious? The nightlife was lackluster. The only options were to attend a show or go to the lobby for drinks. There was no karaoke, no dancing, and if you’re going to have a show, at least make sure it’s coordinated. The dancers seemed to be performing to different songs, and the main singer wasn’t good. The sound quality was muffled, and it was especially noticeable since the Hard Rock Café was next door. Their show was happening at the same time, and we could hear huge cheers and applause while ours had nothing but silence. The shows were terrible, to say the least. One day, we decided to play our own music at the pool because we were tired of the silence. An employee told us to turn it off, and another guest mentioned they were told the same thing. The whole experience was boring and easily the worst of my five trips to Mexico. The only good thing about the resort was the service from Renee, Jesus, Gustavo and Francisco and the ladies serving at the lounge. I will never return to Occidental again. They need to learn to treat everyone equally because they definitely didn’t during our stay.

The two biggest challenges savvy travelers face are. 1. Choosing the right destination and resort for the occasion. 2. Filtering reviews to clarify what you are buying. But it’s an exhilarating experience when you know you picked the right place. Occidental Nuevo Vallarta, part of the Barceló Hotel Group, provides the perfect balance: an upscale brand, a charming boutique resort, exquisite food, exceptional staff, impeccable service, and a beautiful sandy beach where you can body surf and stroll for hours. The location is five stars at the best end of the beach, where the bank declines slowly. The atmosphere here is healthy and vibrant, featuring yoga, volleyball, samba lessons, water aerobics, the gym, outdoor entertainment, and beautiful beach walks. While on the beach, we observed lots of walkers, groups of dolphins, and pelicans diving for fish. The rooms are dated but nice and comfortable, and trust me, you won’t miss a balcony. Our first room had minor deficiencies that were addressed, and we asked for and received a room with a better view on their Royal Level the following day. This gives you unlimited a la carte restaurant reservations subject to availability. Personalized check-in on the 7th floor, where you can access a private restaurant. You also have an exclusive swimming pool and bar and the use of beach cabanas, which we liked as it was our anniversary. But all guests are treated great, and you get three a la carte reservations for a one-week stay. The dinner show at the Japanese Tokyo restaurant is so much fun and we loved the Italian restaurant Los Olivos, where you can order more than one appetizer. Many of the guests we spoke to at the hotel return repeatedly, revealing a lot. Caring for the customer is part of the hotel’s DNA. You can enjoy lunch at Le Buffet or outdoors at Mariachi, both of which are delightful. I was particularly impressed by Esteban, the best manager I’ve encountered at any resort, who consistently checked in with staff and guests throughout the property. Of Note: Carlos makes the best specialty coffees in the lounge in the morning. Guests will rise early to place beach towels on chairs around the pools, though there are rules against doing so. This is not a party resort. It doesn't feel crowded like other large hotels. If you are single, noisy, or want to party all night or pursue romantic interests, this isn't the right place for you. The outdoor shows for adults begin at 9 p.m., followed by lounge entertainment that concludes at 11 p.m. Many vendors circulate the beach chairs. They pay for a license and provide better deals than the Tuesday Public Market across the road. You can negotiate. I bought a “No Bad Day” T-shirt for 150 pesos and a nice hat for my wife for 170 pesos. Keep an eye out for Elias. He and his wife, Esther, work out of the hut beside the property to the left. You can say “No gracias” to the vendors. They are all nice and just trying to make a living. As Canadians, we brought 20 peso banknotes for tips, and the hotel will convert larger peso notes into 20s if you tell them you wish to tip the staff. The best silver store is situated on the property. We purchased a beautiful Opel and a silver bracelet there from Rocio, who comes from a family of jewelers. Ask for a 15% discount. If you want to visit Puerto Vallarta, you can catch the ATM bus just outside the hotel and down to the right. It will take you there for 27 pesos per person. Don’t get off the bus until the driver tells you it’s the end. Then, walk toward the water and find yourself on the famous Malecon. To return, take a bus back to Walmart for 10 pesos. Then take the ATM bus there for 27 pesos to Nuevo Vallarta and ask the driver to drop you off at the Occidental. Going to Puerto Vallarta made us appreciate our resort and beach even more. When you enter the hotel, turn right after the concierge and proceed down the hall. On the left, you'll find the excursion office if you wish to book a trip. When we checked in and made our way to our room, the hallway was dark and dank. Upon walking into the room, my husband and I looked at each other and said "It smells really gross in here... like mold and mildew." We went back to the front desk and after about 45 minutes of waiting, they agreed to put us in a different room, right across the hallway. I went to check it out, and it was also stinky. I said maybe it was because it was on the ground floor because there was no ventilation in the hallway - it almost felt like we were in a basement, although that was not actually the case.... they then offered us a room on the 4th floor. Again, however, it was down a very dark, very narrow hallway with no airflow. It's a super strange design.... not at all conducive to any sort of airflow. And dark. Anyway, the room's windows did not open, and it smelled badly too. When we asked if there were any rooms available that had any air flow, they said no. I get that they tried to accommodate us - but when every room has the same problem.... ugh. We decided to leave the hotel to stay elsewhere, as it was super unpleasant. When they realized we were leaving, they made us surrender our "all inclusive" bracelets so we could not even take advantage, during the day time, of the restaurants, pool, etc., even though our stay there was already 100% paid for. The manager told me that this is the tropics and everywhere is going to smell like that. False. We had just come from another hotel down the road where we stayed for 3 nights without any issues (which was LOVELY and we very much enjoyed our time), and we are now at the Westin and, guess what? Our room doesn't stink. I have never left a negative review about a place before. I travel extensively and stay in all "levels" of hotel without incident. I am not a complainer. This is the first time I have EVER complained about a room, and I certainly have never left a hotel before because it smelled badly. I was pretty shocked/appalled at how we were treated and the demand that we turn in our all inclusive bracelets because we elected to sleep elsewhere.

We arrived at the Occidental Nuevo Vallarta on April 2, 2025, and were warmly welcomed by Paola, who greeted us with her big, beautiful smile. From the moment we arrived, she was incredibly friendly and helpful, assisting us with an upgrade and providing us with a room that offered a stunning view of the garden extending out to the ocean. We had asked for a room with a larger patio, and Paola went the extra mile by speaking with her manager. A few days later, she arranged for us to move to a new room with exactly what we hoped for — a spacious patio with lounge chairs, overlooking the pools and the breathtaking ocean view. To our surprise, we were also treated to chocolate-covered strawberries, champagne, and tequila — such a thoughtful touch! Throughout our stay, Paola consistently checked in to make sure we were well taken care of and enjoying every moment of our vacation. Her dedication and genuine care truly enhanced our experience. She exceeded all expectations, and we highly recommend connecting with her upon your arrival at the hotel. Paola truly made our trip memorable!

This budget friendly resort could be so much more. Many ingredients are all ready there such as a great location on Neuvo beach with lots of cool bird life, easy walking on beach and mainly friendly staff. Despite the advertising there is only one pool you can access without paying an extra $850 pesos per person per day for the exclusive quiet pool, a hot tub and a bit higher end liquor. The one main pool has all activities and while noise is reasonable it won’t be for everyone. There is also adequate room around and near pool and lots of room on beach but some funky palapas on beach for more shade would help elevate the average look to a bit funky. The pool area needs a food truck to provide fast fun food to families and others who don’t feel like getting out of their suits and trudging to buffet. Currently you have to go into the main buffet or Mexican restaurant for a hamburger or corn chips, tacos, etc. It’s a pain, not freshly made and lacks any ingenuity. All the burgers are precooked…yuk. There is lots of room near pool bar. No…there is no swim up bar. There is also no specialty coffee location in the morning that has morning treats like most AI,s…you must head to the buffet, ask for an espresso (not an Americano or you will get regular coffee) with hot water. The one bar inside the hotel opens at 10am and they have an espresso machine, and are there at 0800 but won’t turn it on. Except Carlos who was outstanding when he was working there! To wrap up, the food in the specialty restaurants was generally very good. Best in Japanese even including the Teppanyaki grill show and the manager David was outstanding. Both Carlos and David should be promoted to train some of these other F&B managers. We never saw what we recognized as a Buffet Manager nor did one ever come and ask us what the experience was like. It was average, often food was cool in trays. I know they tried but they need more staff attending AND chafing trays so the food stays covered and moisturizer. If you go, try to stay with the short order cooks making fresh or reheating food for you if you like hot. I normally had to put French toast back through the toaster salamander to get it crispy and hot. Finally, the rooms were very clean and beds medium firm The coffee machine in room was a plastic horrible cheap thing as was the coffee and we went through two clothes steamers and gave up. Barcello should buy quality not junk.

This is our second stay at the Occidental NV and we are always impressed with every part of our stay! From the food to the room and every activity they put on, it’s a perfect vacation spot. The highlight of our trip is always lounging at the pool watching Eva put folks through their paces in water aerobics and the absolutely top shelf guys tending the Las Olas bar! Hamid is the best as he always remembers my name and my drink is perfect every, single, time. His fellow bartenders, Aldo and Ramses are also keeping us laughing and make the atmosphere happy and the stress absolutely melts away! Thanks ONV, we can’t wait to book our next trip with you!!

Absolutely loved our stay. The staff at the Occidental were outstanding and very friendly. It's a smaller quieter resort which we loved. Food and service was fantastic,enjoyed the nightime shows. We will definitely return to this hotel next year and stay longer.

As a member of the Celiac Disease club, I always look for reviews of gluten free food before going to a resort. After staying at the Occidental, I thought I would write a review to help others out. This resort is very easy to eat well and delicious food on a gluten free diet. The buffet foods are labelled if they are gluten free and they have corn tortillas crisps. We only ate at the Mexican restaurant and it was a bit harder to eat here from their menu, but they were very knowledgeable and accommodated my allergy. Definitely a must resort for the food!
