Personable staff, lovely hotel in a great location
We really enjoyed our stay at No.1 York. The staff were all very attentive and friendly. Attractive reception rooms & guest rooms. The pantry is a lovely touch! Yummy breakfast. Best to prebook your parking. Looking forward to returning in the summer.
Book with confidence. You won't be disappointed.

I came here on a surprise weekend away, so can take no credit for having booked this amazing hotel.
The hotel is well situated, just 5-10 mins walk to the town centre and minster. Private parking is available - a real asset for such a central locaton.
The building is a lovely mix of old and new, and has made a feature of the unusual layout (if you find stairs difficult this might not be the place for you, although I'm sure they also have more accessible rooms if you ask).
The decor is fab - understated yet quirky, vintage yet comfortable. There was a lovely atmosphere, with the shared spaces each having their own very different feel.
Our room was compact yet well thought out, so we didnt feel at all cramped.
The superking bed was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept in. The bedding was luxurious - quality linen, fluffy down duvet, plump feather pillows.
The bathroom was very well appointed with a full size free standing bath and separate shower. Toiletries were good quality and plentiful.
The room also had a record player with a selection of vinyls to choose from (more downstairs in the library), a DAB radio and drinks making facilities. Not that we needed the drinks, because of the amazing pantry facility on the landing...
The pantry was well stocked with an array of tasty snacks - crisps, popcorn, picknmix sweets, chocolate bars, icecream, fruit, traybakes and soft drinks. All high end products. This was a lovely feature, and brought an extra home-comfort to the hotel experience.
We had a drink in the bar before going out. Again, the bar was a delightfully quirky space with comfortable seating and a warm atmosphere. There was a good coctail menu and the staff were top notch.
Breakfast was served in the adjoining restaurant (they also do evening meals) - four courses comprising everything you could wish for. All the elements were fresh, good quality and well cooked.
All the hotel staff were lovely and it almost had a family feel to it. The welcome on the desk was faultless - so helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble, extending our pre-arranged parking so we could make the most of our last day in York, and then on our return home, calling us to let us know they had found my kindle in the room (oops!) and offering to return it to us free of charge.
The only very very small negative to the whole stay was the noise from the floor above. This was caused by guests clomping around in shoes, and banging their suitases on the floorboards. Thankfully this didn't last long or happen late at night. Apart from fitting thick carpets, which would spoil the aesthetic of the rooms, or insulating the ceilings, which would be a massive job, I can't see how anything could be done to improve the situation.
So, hearty thanks to the staff for making this such a wonderful stay. I would love to stay again. I see there are other hotels in the same group, and would definitely book another trip away to stay in one of those too.
Book with confidence. You won't be disappointed.

We stayed one night, the rooms are lovely with decent bathrooms and comfy beds.
Staff were very friendly and helpful. Including making recommendations of places to eat in town.
Highlight is the pantry which includes a range of snacks, fruit and drinks all free of charge, a really nice touch.

The location is excellent, No. 1 York has many unique features and the staff are on the whole attentive and helpful. But after reading reviews prior to booking, I was expecting accommodation that was extra special.Almost £500 for two nights, the most we have ever paid for a hotel, was not good value for money.
The hotel is only a short walk to the walls and there is parking at the rear (£25 a night). Our bedroom was small but comfortable, the en suite an adequate size with quality toiletries. The linen and towels were luxurious. The dolls' house for tea/coffee was an amusing touch, but the coffee machine didn't seem to work and the kettle spluttered when pouring. I would have expected a choice of tea bags. The complimentary pantry on the first floor was a welcome attraction, praise where it's due. The room wasn't serviced until mid-afternoon, surely rather late in the day?
We had to ask for the wifi code and had to re-register every time we went online. We weren't given code for the gate and had to ring reception to have the bar lifted. It was frustrating to have to wait ten minutes to have this opened at 8:30pm. Then it was only after my wife went into the hotel to try and find a receptionist.
Our stay was a pleasant one, but for us there were too many 'even better ifs' to make it good value for money. York itself was as magnificent as ever, always a delight to visit.

Fabulous hotel. Location is perfect if you want to explore York on foot. We arrived by train, and the hotel porter met us at the station to collect our bags so that we could start exploring straightaway. When we arrived at the hotel, our bags were waiting for us in our room. Their staff were simply faultless- nothing was too much trouble and everything seemed seamless and smooth. There was even a pantry on the first floor where you could grab a piece of cake or crisps or fruit etc to take back to your room to enjoy with a cup of tea.
They provided non-dairy milk in our room and replenished it whenever we needed it.
And the hotel building and decor were just stunningly beautiful.
We would love to return soon.

The breakfast in the hotels is perfect, and is very generous for the price as you do get a lot of food and it's a very good standard.
The staff were so friendly and helpful through our whole stay.
My favourite parts were - the pantry (amazing to have an ice cream after our dinner), the dolls house tea and coffee station (adorable), and the marmalade lounge was such a lovely way to spend the afternoon.
The bed was huge, and incredibly comfy and the bath towels and robes are super fluffy.
10/10 would return again.
Also - the ice cream from the pantry and the nespresso machine in the bedroom combines to make the perfect affogato :)

Stayed at No1 to celebrate a special birthday for my partner. I was looking for somewhere classy and dog friendly and was prepared to go anywhere in the country but this place had the best reviews and lived up to every word.
The hotel itself is beautiful with plenty of character managing to blend boutique with classic superbly. We were upgraded to a bootham suite for our one night stay which exceeded our expectations and after a walk round York we had drinks in the bar where we met some wonderful people and exchanged travel stories before our evening meal, which surpassed our expectations for fine dining on a special occasion. All of the staff were exceptional but we have a special place in our hearts for Dominic who blended some superb cocktails (recommend the spicy margarita) and made us feel really welcome including Hank our little frenchie, who was thoroughly pampered.
When booking, I thought it was a little expensive and was slightly hesitant but the reviews about being so dog friendly were what tipped the balance between choosing elsewhere. I needn’t have worried and would thoroughly recommend No1 at York - especially anyone wanting their beloved pooch to enjoy the experience with them.
Thank you to all the team, we are very grateful to you for making our stay so special

Our room was beautiful, and the pantry was a real highlight - after a lovely dinner out, being able to grab a free ice cream and enjoy it in comfort was such a treat!
The shower was one of the best I’ve ever had, with fluffy towels and a comfy robe that made everything feel extra luxurious. The hotel bar was a delight - we had a relaxing drink, and the bartender was so knowledgeable and friendly. We especially loved the little train in the bar!
Breakfast was absolutely delicious and set us up perfectly for a day exploring York. Every detail at this hotel has been so well thought out, making for a truly relaxing stay. We loved every second and can’t recommend it highly enough!

We had an amazing weekend at No. 1 York - from the minute we arrived until we left, the service was friendly, professional and welcoming. The team took time with all the guests, where appropriate and we enjoyed some really interesting and fun conversation. The food was delicious; a great choice for breakfast and dinner, well presented and quick to be served. We enjoyed sitting in the bar area, which was comfy and had a very wide choice of drinks (great cocktail menu).
We loved 'The Pantry'- what a great idea! and appreciated the birthday gift in the room.
And wow, what a room; the bed was super comfy and we slept well. The bathroom was great too and well stocked with lovely toiletries.
The location is perfect too - very close to the centre, so was easy to pop out and enjoy the surroundings
Thank you so much for a fab stay - we hope to return.

It's a great location and the hotel has all the amenities you could hope for.
The restaurant is good but a little pricy - there are lots of good alternatives in the city centre just a 10 minute walk away.

Wonderful place to stay for a few nights as a birthday treat for my husband. The staff are incredibly welcoming, the building is grand yet homely, the decor is understated luxe, beautiful warm colours and textiles. Reminded us of The George in Rye in terms of decor and vibe. The bar is a dream, cosy in the afternoon with the fire on and perfect for a pre dinner cocktail. Great service, fantastic wine list, strong and well made cocktails, and decent prices. The 'help yourself pantry' was a dream, and given we are both vegan, the staff put special chocolates in our room to make up for pantry ones containing milk. Underfloor heating in the bathroom, need I say more?! Record player and eclectic vinyl selection in each room, quirky and lovely touch. Restaurant is beautiful with lovely service. We were made to feel really special. Only negative was a hard to pour from kettle; water went everywhere. 10 minute stroll into town, secure parking for £25 per night which is punchy but standard for York. Would absolutely return, and looking forward to trying the Margate one which is very local to us. 10/10.

When we book a hotel we look for the best, not the most expensive or star rating, just the best, the best reviews, and the best location...And blow my old tin trumpet !! we hit the jackpot with this one. We stayed a week at the No1 as we had never visited York before, we ( Me, my fussy wife, and our Rottie Betsy ) and we loved it.
we tried to book a suite but they were all booked up, so we stayed in the larger double, it was clean and very comfy bed with a choice of pillows, light and airy, big bathroom, it was just great if you have read other reviews and they reflect anything negative about this hotel they are lying pure and simple, a lot of people will mention the Pantry...What a great little touch !! Sweets, sodas, cakes, and Dolly Mixtures help yourself.
Betsy was spoilt rotten by the staff, freshly cooked bacon delivered on her own plate..The staff are second to none, they were just really nice people who cared, which is so rare these days,
we were a ten-minute walk from the centre of York, Tip,don't stay in the centre, the crowds can be overwhelming and the bells constantly ring throughout the day and night.
Look, if you're going to York try your best and stay here, the next time we go back to York we will stay at the No1 if we can't stay at the No1 we ain't going to York Simples ..
Oh, the food was freshly cooked, the lounge was just a nice place to relax, the bar served great cocktails ( look out for the train ) The missus had a facial in the spa and loved it, we left with lasting memories of Bacon, Facials and Dolly Mixtures..

Beautifully decorated, cosy and comfortable hotel, in a great location to walk into York city centre. We stayed in a bigger guest room and the bed was ample. I loved all the small touches like the vinyl players in the room, the snack pantry, nice glassware. Also it smells really nice everywhere! My two small criticisms would be that it took a while to get served at the bar in the evening (but when we were served the barman couldn’t have been nicer) and that it took a while to let us into the car park on arrival. Lots of lovely staff though and would stay again.

I have stayed at this hotel several times now and dined in the Pearly Cow. The overall experience of the hotel is always extremely pleasant, friendly, welcoming and offers a relaxing vibe.
I had booked a Clifton Suite for New year's Eve, the overall suite was stunning, and the Christmas Tree in the room definitely added to the Christmas feel.
The Pearly Cow New Year's Evening Meal was one of the best dining experiences I have had. The food was impeccable, every course was served professionally, and the taste of each course was divine. How the Chef and his team managed to produce the main course so precisely, each one looked perfectly executed. (I had the opportunity to watch all the courses coming out of the kitchen from where I was sat). The souffles for dessert were out of this world in taste and presentation. I did offer our compliments to the Chef and his team that evening and next morning when we were checking out. The overall dining experience did prove to be amazing end to the New Year's Eve. I shall definitely consider coming next year if I am able to.

We love this hotel! A real boutique hotel experience.
This was our second stay at No1 for a trip to York in between Christmas and New Year.
On arrival, we had afternoon tea in the lounge (we pre-booked), it was delicious, including a salt cod taco as one of the sandwiches.
We come back to this hotel for the comfortable rooms, that are immaculately clean with a great shower and the turntable in the room is a funky touch. All staff that we interacted with on both stays were friendly and very professional. They are a real credit to the hotel.
We didn't use the bar on this stay, but we did on our previous stay and the cocktails were great for a treat, (they are a little pricey).
The hotel is a great location for walking into the city.
We only stayed for one night, but what a great stay and the breakfast was really good, they clearly use good quality ingredients.
