Just got home after a week in sunny Puerto Vallarta at the Melia Porto Vallarta resort. In all it was a fabulous experience as this was our first trip to the western coast of Mexico. It seemed much more of a cultural experience than the Mayan Riviera/Cancun area. The resort is beautiful with all the amenities exactly where they should be … everything is within a five minute walk no matter where you are going….the huge pool set up right at beach front and restaurants and bars strategically located to best serve the patrons. Fun pool bar but not overly crazy busy. Lots of loungers around the pool area. This resort is certainly family friendly with lots of kids activities … there were lots of kids there anywhere from 6months to 10 or 12 years old. The beach is great with shade palapas and volleyball. This is however a very different experience than the Caribbean … the water could sometimes be pretty wavy but there were some calmer days. If you are looking for something to do/excursion talk to Danny who is always on the beach helping people find the right day trip. If you go anytime during February and March expect to see dolphins and Humpback whales right from the beach or your balcony!! The rooms are here in several buildings in a U shape surrounding pool areas and lots of greenery and ponds. This gives lots of the balconies a great view of the ocean. The buildings are from 5 to 9 floors with ample elevators. The rooms are a good size with quite a bit of closet space and a safe. The rooms are definitely dated but let’s face it if you are worried about that maybe you are spending too much time in there! There are three restaurants… buffet .. Mole .. a Mexican ala cart … and a fish restaurant…. The ala carts were very good and the buffet was excellent. The food in general …especially the buffet was consistently good … ala carts were excellent one time and disappointing another. You should make reservations at the Mole and Fish to ensure that you get to eat at a time of your choosing. In all the staff was excellent in all areas … unfortunately the only less than excellent service was in housekeeping …our experience being things like no towels left after cleaning… taking towels when they were hung up to be used again … lack of effort in keeping the fridge filled with beer and or bottles of water … these things were hit and miss … never consistent. Sergio in customer service was a great help in making some plans for off the resort. Do not be afraid to go off the resort! It is very safe and there are lots of things to do if that is something you enjoy. The Vallarta marina is a 5 minute walk … lots of shops and restaurants as well as it being fun to see all of the boats. Thursday from 5 to 9 there is a huge market for those who are interested in souvenirs. Don’t miss the Malecon! It is a huge boardwalk in PV and about a 15 minute/10 dollar cab ride or take the bus … it starts at a McDonalds and goes for at least 4 km .. do not eat at McDs … there’s lots of authentic Mexican spots to eat on the way. Another fun day trip is a ride north to a surf town called Saylulita. We took the bus there and back for a total of about $20 for two of us rather than some excursion that you can book for over a hundred pp … it will be a great Mexican experience for a ride about an hour and a half … It is a great place to sit on the beach and watch the surfers … find Patricia’s Surf shop and restaurant and bar with chairs right on the beach … talk to Patricia … good people. We also ate at a beach restaurant called Don Pedro’s and had close to the best fish sandwich ever! So if the price is right and you are willing to overlook a few inefficiencies for an authentic Mexican experience book the Melia Vallarta!

The staff was absolutely lovely and went out of their way to help us and make us feel welcome. The facility is nice laid out well. My wife and I stayed at the Melia in Punta Cana last August and found the food to be similar as to there. She is celiac so gluten is not an option for her for actual health reasons. Just as in Punta Cana we found the al a cart restaurants were great at letting us know what was ok for her. However, the buffet doesn't label what is gluten free as other resorts we have been to does so it made it difficult eating there. Also, there was only one dessert that they made gluten free, so she had zero variety with that. This was the same in Punta Cana. I assume it must be a Melia thing. Other than that, we found the resort wonderful. The drinks were always tasty. There are always bartenders that are better than others no matter where you go, you figure it out.

Although our ocean front room was a little dated for decor it was spacious, clean and had comfortable furnishings throughout. The king bed was very comfortable and supportive and we slept well each night of our 14 day stay. The cleaning staff kept the in-room fridge stocked with Tacate beer and soft drinks each day. They also left daily snacks of packaged peanuts and M&M’s. The balcony over looking the ocean had comfortable seating and the view was exceptional. The bathroom was clean, modern, and the shower water pressure was excellent. The room air conditioner also worked well and we thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of our room. To be clear, this is not a 5 star resort with respect to fit and finish of rooms, grounds and common spaces. If you’re expecting Hilton or JW Marriott level contemporary luxury hotel surroundings you will be disappointed. However, the entire resort is very clean, well maintained and spacious in all respects. You never feel like you are being squeezed into busy over crowded spaces. It does feel a little late 80’s retro in common areas decor. Many areas of the resort are dimly lit at night, but it works and actually adds to the mid 80’s luxury vibe throughout the resort. The food at the Buffett and a la carts restaurants was good and we definitely didn’t lack for decent food and good service. Every worker we encountered at the resort was lovely to speak with and very helpful. We can’t say enough great things about folks like Alberto at guest services, or our regular server Karen at the morning breakfast restaurant. We also received a very nice and sincerely thankful send-off by Guadalupe Rodriguez and her front desk team on the morning we left the resort.

Pros Nice view Room was kept cleaned (must ask for washcloths) Resort was clean Bed was comfortable Great location near marina Cons Lunch at buffet didn’t start til 1 pm Towels on all chairs with umbrellas on beach by 7am Almost all chairs around pool had towels saving them early(they would clip one towel long ways across two chairs) Pool bar didn’t open til 11 2. Pool Bars only had one server making drinks for everyone around pool plus those in line For the 2 weeks there no waiter ever came to take drink order on beach Employees not as friendly as most resorts Resort is short staffed Food at buffet was not good on weekends Need more restaurants No real benefits for Premium Only one brand of beer The saving of chairs was the main reason I would not return. I believe people were saving chairs by pool and beach. Not coming to beach til after lunch.

I spent 8 amazing days at the Melia Puerto Vallarta resort with my fiancé, and came home with so many wonderful memories. The resort is beautiful, particularly the gardens, pools, and beach area. The landscaping is pristine, and staff can be seen hard at work day in and day out keeping everything looking perfect! Our room was well kept and offered a gorgeous view of the garden and the ocean; I've never had any sort of ocean view from my balcony at any other resort I've stayed at, so this was a special surprise. The facilities could use a little renovation, but provided you with a sense of genuine Mexican charm which we really enjoyed. The staff were incredibly welcoming, friendly, and helpful. The food was delicious, and there were different options available at the buffet each day which was something I haven't seen before at other resorts. I was pleasantly surprised at how accommodating the staff at the Fish House were!! I suffer from a seafood allergy but my fiancé loves seafood, so we made a reservation at this restaurant. The staff were more than happy to go out of their way and make me a large portion of french fries, fresh hot sauce, and chicken alfredo. I was impressed, as I wasn't sure that I'd be able to eat anything that evening! The one negative experience we had was with our check-in. We had requested a room with a single king bed, and check-in staff had us wait quite a long time after our check-in time before advising us that a room with a king bed was not available yet. They tried hard to get us to take a double-twin room instead, but we weren't happy with this option as we'd eventually need to be moved to a different room when one became available. Eventually the staff member who was assisting us went and spoke with her manager, and when she returned she told us that they'd forgotten than a room with a king bed was available for us. We felt as though they were trying to convince us to take a lesser room so that they could put their priority guests in the king room, but that's purely speculation. At the end of the day, we were very happy with the room which we ended up in and were excited to begin our vacation. This place will forever hold a special place in our hearts because we got engaged here! We hope to return in the future, and would definitely recommend this resort to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation at a beautiful property.

The property is very beautiful, Breathtaking actually. We toured several other properties while there, still believe the Melia was the prettiest. The atmosphere is very chill even though there were people of all ages and backgrounds. It was a very chill laid-back environment no spring breakers type party people. One criticism that I have is the food. The all-inclusive food It was absolutely disappointing to say the very least. Aesthetically was beautiful, the presentation was beautiful, but everything you put in your mouth had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. It was not only shocking but it became frustrating. They do have one restaurant that you can book a reservation on the property It was amazing food everything else was tasteless. They really do need to offer better seasoned better prepared foods. Another thing that was frustrating is, if you wanted iced tea you had to wait till your meal was almost over because they only steeped one glass at a time for you instead of having iced tea already pre-prepared. Another thing that's worth noting that was five-star as far as our visit, the staff was extremely helpful and friendly to us. They made it very enjoyable. I had left behind a pillow that had belong to my father who is now deceased. I travel with it everywhere I go and it left it in the hotel room. The staff went out of their way to locate it and return it safely to me which I deeply appreciated and that really is above and beyond. We highly recommend this property for your next vacation destination.

Went for our honeymoon this past March. Did have some reservations based on reviews however our stay was exceptional. Room had a beautiful view and more room than we needed. Mole and the fish house were incredible (premium upgrade is worth it for the mole breakfast alone). Pool was an excellent mix of adult areas and places for kids to have a great time as well. Chairs were never hard to find as if there wasn’t along the pool we always found on the upper beach area (with excellent drink service). The staff were exceptional from check in to reservations and all the waiters. Special shoutout to Guadalupe for the exceptional customer service to help with a booking issue pre arrival. Allowed us to get into our room issue free within an hour and a half of landing gaining us a half day on our short trip.

Javier was amazing. He assisted me in helping create a special honeymoon night with my wife. We were able to watch the sunset together all because of him. The time we got to spend together was a great experience. Thank you Javier. Memories are forever.
