We had a great time. The location is beautiful and the staff are warm, fun and hard working. Some comments: * I thought the food was generally excellent. However vegetarian choices were limited (I eat fish, so I was ok). Maybe they will make you something specially, if you don't eat fish. * There is some excellent snorkelling, right off the beach. You only need to swim out about 5 to 10 meters. I encountered very little current. The resort will lend you complimentary snorkelling gear. I saw 2 turtles and several white tip reef sharks there. Plus loads of fish and beautiful coral. Note white tip reef are quite small and probably less dangerous to a human than the average dog in a park. I tried to get close to one and it ran away. So don't let that put you off. * The guided snorkelling and snorkelling safari are worth doing in addition to swimming off the island. But note that the snorkelling safari boat can crash up and down a lot in strong winds. Not advisable for those with a bad back. * There are some crown of thorns starfish on the reef. I hope they do something about them before they become too numerous and destroy the reef. * Complimentary sit-on kayaks are available. The water staff told me it was ok to kayak around the island. However there were sizable breakers and rocks at either end of the island. Even as an experienced kayaker and strong swimmer, I didn't feel it was safe to do so, especially in a basic sit-on kayak. Maybe it might be ok if there was no wind. Kayaking along the length of the island between the spa and walkway was fine however. * All the water comes from desalination from the island. It tastes a bit flat, but you soon get used to it. * I had a really nice massage at the spa. * Make sure to go out on to the walk way to watch the sunset. * Wifi was fine for emails etc. I didn't try to watch YouTube (why would you go to a tropical island and watch YouTube?). * There are some mosquitos and flies. But we put DEET on each day and didn't get bitten much. The few bites we did get only itched a bit for an hour or two. * Supply of fresh towels to the room was a bit random. * The milk is UHT milk or from powder. Ick. But you have to make some allowance for the fact that you are an hour's boat ride from the mainland. And I'm not sure fresh milk is readily available on the mainland. Don't expect any cream in your cocktails. * There seemed to be an issue with no water for showers and toilets on the day we were leaving. I don't know how long it took them to sort it out. * Keeping the flies off your breakfast fruit plate is quite tiresome. Ideally the plate should have a cover. Or one of those whirly blades to discourage flies. This would also discourage the Myna birds that scavenge left overs after guests have gone.

Disappointing our resort rooms are very dated , wardrobe does not fit dresses in , it is not full length, loads of ants in room especially in the shower area , only two towels given , and not changed for three days had to ask for them to be changed , housekeeping very basic. Arrived on the ferry then transferred onto a small boat as a non swimmer I was scared not given a life jacket . Restaurant meals evening meals best luke warm , and not enough selection the dishes seemed to get reinvented from the day before . Breakfast average ran out of orange juice , ordered French toast with bananas ran out of bananas ! Not really acceptable when you are paying a lot of money . But it seems once they have your money totally not interested in resolving issues . Lounges by the pool are comfortable which is a positive . Must admit wish we could have left after the first day/ night . Would not recommend at all .

The setting is beautiful and very peaceful - if you are looking for activity, entertainment and fine dining then this isn’t for you. The staff are very friendly and the resort is very clean. The pool is lovely! On the downside, the rooms are tired and in need of refurbishing and the lighting is very poor so if you like to read in bed you will struggle. There is no TV and wifi in the room was chargeable although free around the resort. The food wasn’t up to standard and both my husband and I were ill whilst there which is something we have never experienced before. If you like wine then I suggest you buy a bottle as the by the glass options were of a very poor standard which was a negative for me as I like a nice glass or two! Overall I would say the staff and service was great but the accommodation and food and drink was overpriced for the standard received and it falls short of being 4*.

My husband and I honeymooned here in July of this year and what a resort! We had just spent five nights with all of our friends and family so wanted something that felt more private (and most importantly adults only) and my only complaint is that the three nights we spent on the island wasn't long enough. What an experience to arrive at such a beautiful island, to hop off the tender and wade in while a welcome song was sung from the beach. What's so beautiful about Matamanoa is that it's so curated, there are always enough sunbeds, you don't have to book for dinner, there is just enough to cater for the island being fully booked and yet it never feels crowded. We had the most incredible few days. Snorkelling here was like swimming in an aquarium, and the team at the activities centre were very helpful. I loved that we could sign out equipment for the during of our stay. A highlight for me is that I had never drunk from a coconut before, and one afternoon there was a polite knock on our cabin door from one of the porters, offering a freshly cut one for us to try. They also do the sweetest touches with hand-carved signs for each bure door with the names of the occupants. We brought ours home as a souvenir from our honeymoon. The food was lovely, the staff were everything you'd expect from a luxury Fiji resort, and I cannot wait to visit again! Thank you Nina and the whole team!

Overall the resort was excellent but one must be accepting of 'Fiji time' in regard to service. The bure was a good size and well located on the east side near to amenities. Snorkelling was excellent though coral structure/colour/variety could not match the GBR. Restaurant breakfast/lunch menus were the same every day and it would benefit from a buffet arrangement. Dinner menu was excellent though meat dishes were not as good as fish (but only 'reef fish' was on offer). The island was small which didn't allow much walking but a full range of activities was available. (The mod grass tennis court and equipment was in good shape). Staff were friendly and always helpful; the wandering musicians at dinnertime offered 'requests' for every table. Guests were welcomed and farewelled by name every day and special events celebrated, all with music and singing. Prices generally were not much more than Australia though wine by the glass was limited and bottles expensive. Having to sign for every meal/drink was inconvenient; 'all-inclusive' is so much easier. There was no problem with bringing alcohol for consumption in rooms and any drinks could be ordered and delivered promptly from the bar. Timing was good (September) with ideal temperatures and only one bad day weatherwise. Transfer connections were well coordinated though the water taxi ride is long and bumpy. Good value for money at $900/night but I would pay more for better dining and an all-inclusive package.

We loved our 8 nights on Matamanoa Island. It truly is a tropical paradise, quiet and relaxing. I feel I cannot give praise to just some staff members as everyone was so obliging, friendly and lovely. Of course, there are some you get to know more than others but we loved our daily chats with different staff there and also the manager who seemed very hands on, which is great. We often saw him walking about and he was always very friendly and interesting to talk to. We enjoyed the meals there and were very glad there was no breakfast buffet! Not keen on buffet meals! I mainly ate fish which I looked forward to. The breakfast menu was very good and really there was something for everyone…even if you just wanted toast (as I did one morning) although not on the menu the staff happily obliged. I didnt think I would want soup in the heat but the soups there were so tasty and delicious, after trying it, we had soup every night! The snorkelling was great, you just have to time it right with the tides. The water so clear and beautiful had lots of different fish darting about. We had a beachfront bure which was delightful! To access the beautiful beach there are several shared steps between a few bures which are easily accessed down to the sand. Each night we enjoyed the music of the boys in the band which really make a tropical island stay. Thank you each and everyone, Matamanoa is certainly a world away from the daily hustle and bustle we have here!

We found an absolute gem at Matamanoa Island. Beautiful rooms and views. We stayed in a beachfront bure which was awesome. Very private but still just a short walk to the main restaurant. The food was fairly typical of a remote island resort but there was enough variety for a week stay. The Ika Kokoda is a must to try. Absolutely delicious, totoka. The best thing about Matamanoa are the staff. They are all always so happy and friendly. There are so many to mention but we made great new friends with Nanise (restaurant), Lucas & Khatri (fire dancers and very funny guys), Naomi and Jerry behind the bar (both make great Negronis) and Alfred and Rami (guitar serenaders that entertained us every night, sometimes quite late). There were so many more though, I should have made more notes of their names. They were always quite amused by my attempts to speak Fijian (tolutolu) but I'll be better next time. We also made a couple of trips over to their village at Tavua. We went to church their and felt so welcome. The village visit a couple of days later was lovely too. The people of Fiji are amazing. We can't wait to return, hopefully soon. Vinaka vakalevu, moce.

I think, as the island is an hour from the mainland, there is more of a community/family feeling with the staff, more so than any of our mainland visits. We really bonded with the sweet folks that work (so hard) on that Island resort. That was the main highlight for us. The beaches are like talcum powder, the sea life is so full of colour, the cocktails are REAL! The rooms are comfortable. We loved being serenaded at our dinner tables, greeted by name every morning, little touches like these made it for us. Only thing I would say there is room for improvement is - the food was adequate, but not fantastic. I would definitely go there again and recommend it to anyone.

The food was more than disappointing. Sometimes inedible and extremely expensive for what was most often, frozen or tinned foods. Splashed out on a beach front private pool villa, which was sufficient but lacked in anything special for the price. The beach was nothing like the one pictured on the site, covered in rocks. Overall the whole resort needs a good dose of money spent and maintenance. Such a shame, has a lot of potential.

Very good adults only resort in the Mamanuca islands region of Fiji. We spent 10 glrorious days on the island. Our bure with a plunge pool, overlooked the beach and was quite spacious and comfortable. The island itself is surrounded by lush tropical vegetation and palm trees with coconuts. The meals are great and the cocktails superb. The water was pristine and teeming with sealife, great for snorkelling just off the beach. The water temperature was perfect as there is no real winter in Fiji. Best of all was the staff. It was our second visit to Matamanoa and it was great to be back and to see Kelera again and she gave my wife and me a very warm welcome, like old friends catching up. You can choose to do as much or as little as you choose. We had a very relaxing holiday. Thank you to all the staff who made it a memorable holiday for us, again. Thanks Kelera, Salome, Melea, Lukas, Miti, Inoke, Viri, Naomi, Pui, Sadrina, Nanise, Gabriel, One and all the others whose names I cannot remember. Highly recommend Matamanoa. One of the best adults resorts in the Fiji islands.

The food is of a very disappointingly poor standard not made with love or flavour. A breakfast buffet would be great. Daily specials would be welcome. Overall the feeling is a bit flat not the usual warmth of a Fijian resort. The snorkelling and diving is good, not as accessible as imagined. We may have chosen the wrong resort for our needs. Organisation is a little haphazard eg double booked spa time, lost laundry. With a few simple improvements, this could be a great resort. Need to fix the meals urgently.

Matamanoa, an adult resort, what a great experience which we absolutely recommend. We reached the island on the Purple Turtle, a 75-minute speed boat ride, as the helipad was non operational and the catamaran which stops out from the resort takes much longer. Upon reaching the island; the boat was tied between a buoy and the shore, with the stern on the sandy beach. Described as a ‘wet landing’, it was one foot in the water or straight onto the sand. We were welcomed with a shell lei. While our luggage was taken to our bure, we were escorted to the reception area where an explanation about the resort was given. We next went to breakfast and waited until our bure was ready. We had number 27 right next to reception. It was perfect for us with its own plunge pool. The reception/boutique was excellent with clothing medicines, snacks, soft drinks, some tins and bottles of alcohol, ice creams, souvenirs and much more. Wi-Fi was free for 1 device per bure and free for all guests in the reception area. Additional wi-fi in the room was available at a cost. This meant I would sometimes be in our bure and my wife in the reception area. We elected not to have the meal package. Breakfast was included and we had a snack for lunch and dined in the evening. Dinner was 3 courses with a choice of fish, pork, chicken and beef. Being older we just had mains. The breakfast consisted of tea or coffee, croissants and muffins, 3 pieces of fruit, juice and a choice of muesli, pancakes, French toast, eggs bene, omelette or big breakfast. We never left the table wanting more. We sat around the pool, swam in the pool and the sea, snorkelled and just lazed around. We watched guests doing an introductory scuba dive or scuba training towards a full ‘Padi’ certificate. There is a boat trip to the island where Tom Hanks filmed ‘Castaway’, as distinct from Castaway Island resort. You could go handline fishing or basket weaving. The staff were great, friendly and very obliging. Patrick, the Manager, on being informed one of the sunbed shades was broken, had a new one fitted next day. That we considered proactive. We were told the outside pool furniture was replaced every 5-6 years. Other staff of note were Salome and Nancy who were always welcoming and engaged in conversation readily. Overall, I would recommend Matamanoa as a great place to stay.

Paradise, clear warm waters, wonderful professional friendly staff. We stayed in a North ocean villa which was well appointed and with great private plunge pool and beach in front of the villa. Yes, we were woken every night by the Nocturnal Storm petrels screeching and calling - they breed in the north of the island during the rainy season. We got up to take pictures but they stumbled away and we didn’t get the pics, but were privileged to see this rare bird which only breeds on Matamanoa and one other island. The northern villas are about 5 mins walk or golf cart ride from the main part of the resort. The food was often lukewarm but was tasty, and delivered in Fiji time. The spa massage was great, and the activity staff fantastic- great fire dance. The excursions such as daily guided snorkel were great - and it was really good to be able to snorkel directly off the beach. We would definitely recommend Matamanoa, especially if you love snorkelling.

The lodging is fabulous, the scenery is beautiful, the staff is amazing! My two complaints were the food is awful and expensive and DO NOT GO in early-mid March as you will be awakened all night by the birds that cry all night long into the wee morning hours.
