This was our fourth visit to this beautiful hotel but this time they lost/cancelled our reservation sometime prior to our arrival without telling us so we almost did not stay. This may affect future visits to this hotel due to their error. Other than that, the food was excellent, the staff is friendly and courteous and the room (mountain views) was fantastic. We had a nice Christmas Eve and Christmas night by the roaring fireplace in the Living Room lounge.

We stayed at this hotel for two nights as part of our two week trip to Japan. On first impressions, the hotel lobby was lovely and clean and the staff were very welcoming and respectful. Prior to visiting, the staff were really helpful with booking us a shuttle bus to and from the hotel in request, which is a really handy service as the Odawara station is about 45 minutes away. The reception staff also provided us with a really helpful map/guide of the Hakone circle, which included the main attractions such as the volcano and Lake Ashi and how to travel around. This was so so handy and without it, we would have probably struggled to know where we were going! The shuttle also collected us from Gora station on the evening when we completed this trail which was also handy as it is quite hilly in the area. All we had to do was make a phone call and within ten minutes the shuttle had collected us. The room itself was spotless, and while a bit more dated than the other hotels we stayed in, it was nice to stay somewhere a bit more traditional. We had trouble using the air con on the first night, so the next day reception stay kindly came to our room to show us how to use it. The only downside to this was the second night we had the air con on, and the room then had a bit of an egg smell. I can imagine this is from the onsens and outside. All in all, I was really happy however with the room, which was very spacious and it provided a comfortable stay! It was nice to have someone to have a few days to chill out as the rest of the trip was quite hectic! One of my regrets is that we didn’t use the onsen baths. I didn’t feel comfortable at the time not being able to wear swimwear, however respect that this is a Japanese Onsen requirement. We did book a private onsen before our trip, but when we had arrived I made a slight mistake and realised it was too far away! So we just stayed in the hotel and relaxed which was good to recharge our batteries! I do wish I used this time to use the hotels onsen! There was a few issues I felt doesn’t make it a five star review. One if this things was the fire in the living room area. While this was a really nice and relaxing area, the smell of the smoke fumes is quite strong and by the end of my stay it was giving me quite a headache. I don’t know how the staff get on working here everyday as it fills the whole lobby area too! My other issue was the breakfast. Upon check in, we were offered a discounted rate for breakfast and we figured that as there was nothing in the immediate area for breakfast, we would take the offer up, although even with the discount it still wasn’t cheap! The first morning we had the breakfast we were disappointed. It wasn’t with the money at all. I ordered an omelette which was quite small and my husband ordered one too and it didn’t arrive. The buffet was okay, but not much choice for western travellers in my opinion. It was not worth the money at all so we decided to cancel the breakfast for the next day. When we asked about this at reception, they informed us the booking for breakfast could not be cancelled as we had the reduced rate, however they didn’t inform us about this at the time of booking. However they did quickly rectify this and cancelled as I said I was not satisfied with the breakfast. It would have cost us almost £100 for the two breakfasts if we had booked. Despite the issues with the air con, disappointing breakfast and the strong smell of the fire, we did enjoy our stay and would recommend the hotel.

Disappointing . Hotel needs a refresh.
Location was really out of the way . True the Mountain View’s were beautiful but you can get equally beautiful views from the lake . There really is very little in the area and the drive up and down the mountain can be frustrating because traffic gets really bad ....

There really is very little in the area and the drive up and down the mountain can be frustrating because traffic gets really bad . The hotel was probably beautiful at one time but it is very dated It was perfectly clean but the furniture fabric was frayed and the bathroom really needed an update . For example , the vanity counter was clean but stained . The staff was polite and helpful . I would look for somewhere different to stay next time .

We arrived here for a one night stay on our way from Tokyo to Hakone. The desk staff from start to end, for me was not very friendly or at least not as friendly as we've been used to on our 20 day trip across South East Asia and Japan. Very business like which we found uninviting. The Living Room lounge and dining room staff, although pretty slow was very friendly and attentive. As with most of of the hotels in Japan I found cocktails, wine, whiskey, pretty expensive. They have an interesting Loung menu with more Western type food. The dining room menu, although they call it Western cuisine, is anything but. Sure, it is not Asian cuisine but it is limited and not as appetizing tobthe eye as you would expect. Prices as well were over the top. The room we had was a deluxe. It was ample and very nice. What I did not like was the shower area. To get to the shampoo you have to bend quite a bit. I am 5'11" and senior. I was thinking anyone with an achy back or issues with bending will not find this to be good at all. The indoor hot spring bath (Osnen), was nice and inviting and no extra charge. The breakfast experience was just OK. As with the dining staff, the staff was excellent. The variety of food however was very limited compared to the other hotels we have been at. I'd probably try another hotel if I come back in the future.
