After reading the reviews of this hotel I was very excited to stay for six nights. It was a good choice, the hotel is lovely. The location is good, very central and easy to taxi anywhere. The staff were pleasant and helpful to the point of almost being too deferential! The hotel is clustered around the original Mitsui property and the entrance is stunning. There is a gentle garden in the center. The rooms are large and outfitted very nicely, although I was a bit irritated at times that they remained so dark even with all the lights turned up to full - sometimes you want bright light in a bathroom to do whatever...The amenities are good but I was disappointed in the quality of the provided shampoo, conditioner and body lotion - in large bottles and of the watery consistency of a low end hotel chain. The little touches of providing pajamas, a nightly "treat" at turn down and water, etc were very nice. The breakfast was decent with a good selection of items. The restaurant and bar provided good food and drinks. The prix fixe option at Forni was particularly good. The onsen bath that is available to guests was superb and may be this hotel's high point. We used it every evening! There is a good size gym with modern equipment. The spa is relaxing - I had a facial which was more massage than facial, but still nice. The valet staff is a high point, they were always at your finger tips. Overall, this is a very nice high end Marriott boutique property. You dont see the Marriott name anywhere, nor is it mentioned other than at check in. This is also a very expensive hotel experience, which is why I may come off as poking holes. For this kind of nightly rate I expect damn near perfection in every aspect, but that's just me. Overall, this hotel is very good and I would highly recommend it for a stay in Kyoto. It touts itself as the best hotel in Kyoto and it probably is.

All the staffs in spa team is so helpful , especially Yukina INOUE, who was very helpful to arrange my Florist and romantic set up of room. We have Michelin star dining experiences in one of the best restaurant in Kyoto, called Toki. It served prefect french cuisine. And the whole menu is like a story book , the details of the cuisine is impressive . As an athlete , Fitness centre is a must for me to choosing my stay. The gym is private and clean and serving with luxury technogym equipment. Even it is not open 24/7 , I still enjoy my time on it . Remember please don't miss the fantastic view in the garden. Overall , I highly recommend the mitsui hotel and it is the best 5 star hotel I stay in japan.

This hotel didn't meet any of the expectations I had for it based on reviews. I added it on my stay to Japan and I was so excited. I just finished my stay at the Bvlgari hotel in Tokyo and found enough points to stay here for one night. Both hotels had been selected by the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel as three key hotels so thought they would be similar in terms of their offerings. I was wrong and disappointed that I spent all those points on this hotel. The location in busy area and not close to anything of interest. The room was basic and overlooked a busy noisy street. The room service and the breakfast was OK but not fantastic. Remember - this was rated a three key and the same "price" (I used points for both) as the Bvlgari but no were near it's quality, service or experience. I did have a meal at the Park Hyatt in Kyoto and it's location and food was perfect. Hoping to have enough points to stay there next time!

This was the best hotel I have ever stayed at. The entire experience felt like a true luxury experience. We booked this as a rewards stay and were upgraded on check in. The room had a stunning view of Kyoto Nijo castle. Mei, who checked us in, was the sweetest and wrote us a personal note. We celebrated my husband’s birthday here and they helped me get him a cake and surprise him. We also did the private onsen which was one hundred percent worth it, I can’t praise it enough. Finally we did the matcha tea ceremony by the lobby which was beautiful, the girl who did the ceremony (it is a while ago and I didn’t write down her name but she was from Fukuoka) explained everything perfectly and made us a delicious matcha. Overall we hope to come back sometime in the future it was so worth it.

The price includes breakfast for 2, no pick-up or drop-off service included. I spent 4 days in Kyoto which I stayed at another 5-star hotel in the city centre for the other nights. I wanted to stay at Hotel the Mitsui because I’ve heard it’s the former residence of the Mitsui family, a well-known and powerful family in Japan that has a long history of over 3 centuries. So I was really looking forward to a stay where I could connect myself with the ancient history and the old Japanese beauty. Sadly, the moment when I stepped inside the lobby, I knew it’s just another hotel that belongs to the luxury chains. It feels just like a Grand Hyatt or a Rosewood. Everywhere you look you see a lot of marble and pinewood. History and Japanese heritage? Not so much. Nothing much was preserved from the past. Almost everything was new built. At a rate of $3300 per night, you would expect free mini-bars and some goodies….I got a free bottle of wine and some Japanese snacks. BUT I was told you are charged for everything you take from the mini-bar. This is honestly quite embarrassing. I like how they asked if I consumed anything from the mini-bar when I was checking-out. It’s just laughable. They would even charge a delivery fee ($40) if you wanna have breakfast in your room. Service-wise, I was greeted by the lovely ambassador Yuna during check-in. Yuna was very helpful and she made us feel welcomed and important throughout the whole check-in process. Unfortunately, things took a turn the next day. Before I headed out for sightseeing at 8am, I requested a room make-up (my check-out time got extended to 2pm). The front desk refused, simply because their policy says they do not provide “extra” cleaning prior to check-out time. Honestly, this is complete BS. A 5-star hotel under the Marriott group with the luxury collection tag SHOULD PROVIDE HOUSEKEEPING ON-DEMAND! What a terrible policy they have, and the “cannot do” attitude of the staff really turned me off. Having been a frequent traveller around the globe for over 2 decades, and staying at over 100 different luxury hotels, I have never heard anything like this. To this day I still don’t understand why the service couldn’t be arranged. Because when I was back in my room, I could clearly hear the housekeepers cleaning up the room next door. I hope this is just a misunderstanding due to bad communication. If this is really a hotel policy, they really should review it.

This is by far one of the best hotels in the world. Very simple, it was about attention to detail. The people of this hotel personify the term :ichigyo-zammai. That is the highest compliment I can give.

Beautiful hotel within close proximity to all Kyoto has to offer. Service was exceptional. A huge thanks to the service manager who went out of his way to help me locate my mobile phone left in a taxi. Wonderful room and bathroom and superb breakfast.

The hotel and its service are absolutely stunning, exceeding all expectations. The staff’s attention to detail and warmth create an atmosphere of true luxury. I only wish we could experience this level of personalized, attentive service in Europe—it would truly set a new standard.

One of the top hotels we have ever stayed in and known as the finest hotel in Kyoto. The location is exactly what you want for visiting Kyoto as a tourist! Sunway stop a few steps away. Location right across the street from the Nejo Castle and ask for room 270 so you have a perfect view of the castle. The concierge team is top notch and all staff at this hotel is kind, professional and most of all very happy so the owner must be doing the right things. They were all so proud to work at Hotel the Mitsui Kyoto. The breakfast buffet is fantastic and Forni wonderful menu. The Onsen/Sauna facilities are fantastic. Special thanks to : Misaki Hayakawa, Yusuke, Hitomi, Atsuki and the rest of the staff that made our wedding anniversary visit so special! Hope to return soon.

The definition of luxury and perfection in the heart of Kyoto. A gorgeous interior design and wonderful room. Every possible detail has been considered in building and outfitting this hotel. We loved the breakfast and the bartenders were wonderful at cocktail hour and the gardens stunning. The concierges that helped us each night with dinner reservations which are a must everywhere were terrific and the help with transportation or advice on routing for sightseeing in a packed Kyoto were wonderful. Special shout out to Lea from Leon who was a stand out as she made our stay even more enjoyable. And the public onsen downstairs was just incredible. Every detail thought through even for providing a dryer for your bathing suit or supplying an extra suit if wanted. Unquestionably one of the best hotels in the world and worth every dollar/yet! I only wish we could have stayed longer and will definitely return again and again.

While we weren't able to stay here due to a typhoon canceling all the trains / flights, our experience with the concierge was excellent. We had a lot of back and forth on booking restaurants. They gave excellent suggestions with pricing, descriptions, availability. When the trains got canceled the hotel alerted us about it and helped us go back and forth trying to figure out another way to get to Kyoto. Unfortunately, all of the options ended up being unavailable and we had to cancel. The hotel refunded us due to the typhoon and canceled all our restaurant reservations on our behalf (which was amazing given we are now scrambling to find another place to stay). They are super quick to answer and were beyond helpful. Highly recommend tapping into the concierge. We hope to make it Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto in the near future!

The Mitsui is a beautiful hotel providing a welcome respite from crowed Kyoto while nestled in gardens. We spent five nights in this elegantly designed hotel. Fortunately the shortfalls: very dark lighting in the bathrooms, A/C in room not cold enough to our liking, and a weak concierge couldn't overshadow all the positives. The buffet breakfast was superb, garden room was serene, service was excellent and location (which we chose based on our preference for a low tourist area) were all top notch. And, the thermal spring area is truly an oasis of calm.

My wife and I stayed at the Mitsui for 6 nights at the beginning of June 2024, and although the room and amenities were fantastic we had a very mixed experience including such highlights as been chased out of the restaurant on suspicion of not paying for our pre-paid breakfast! Firstly, the positives - the building itself is gorgeous, surrounding a beautiful garden which you can see from the restaurants and walk through at your leisure. We stayed in the Nijo-jo Castle View room, which overlooks the approach and main castle itself, which is quite the sight to behold. The room itself was spatious, comfortable and very well stocked with all possible amenities, and the fittings were high quality and well kept. However, we had numerous, confounding problems with the service. The first of these was that it was completely impossible to put charges onto our Room unless we had a specific type of Credit Card. Debit cards were not accepted, and they could not settle up payments at the end of our stay. Any restaurant meals had to be paid for immediately, and Spa Treatments had to be pre-paid. I checked this with multiple staff who said the same thing. When we arrived, we were offered a discounted upgrade on the room, which we opted for, although a day later it turned out that they had miscalculated the price, so we were asked to immediately come and rectify this. So not only had they given us a false price for the room upgrade, but we had to take time out of our day to pay for it on two occasions because they couldn't hold payment until the end of the stay. This trend of inconveniences continued when we had breakfast in the morning (which had been prepaid for). I explicitly asked the waiter if we needed to pay for the coffees, to which he said no, it's included. So we got up and walked away, and half way to the door, a lady waved us down and exclaimed that we needed to wait and pay for the breakfast. She spent a couple minutes talking with the manager, and then told us we could leave and apologised to us. Another issue is that the Wifi service requires a Marriot Bonvoy account, which isn't just a simple sign up, you need to go to the front desk and sign up. An inconvenience would just add to our already disrupted experience. Additionally, we requested that the turndown service was not required, but this was ignored. Once again, strange and easily preventable errors in service. Overall, I think the hotel has potential to be a lovely, enjoyable destination, but the service was not competent enough to match a luxury 5-star experience and we have had a better experience at 4--star hotels in Tokyo.

Our ship was docked for two days, and we decided to spend the night at Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto. We were blown away by this hotel, which embodies the essence of Japan at its finest. The hotel is absolutely stunning, and the service matches this level of excellence. The amenities are exceptional. We booked the Nijo Suite, which offers a splendid view of the Nijo Temple. While it is a splurge, it is well worth it! The interiors are sublime, thoughtfully designed with a focus on comfort, culture, and aesthetic appeal. The hotel grounds are meticulously crafted in the Japanese tradition, giving the impression that they have existed for centuries. It is the ultimate in quiet luxury. The food and beverage offerings are incredible, featuring Japanese, Italian, and French cuisines. The breakfast presentation is out of this world. The Japanese breakfast, enjoyed among the garden's scenic backdrop, is a must-try! The highlight of the hotel is the natural onsen hot spring on the lower level, accompanied by a spa. This exclusive experience requires a reservation an hour in advance to maintain an intimate setting. The design is breathtaking, with tones of black, natural rock boulders and ceiling mirrors reflecting the various pools. The spring water is naturally fortified with minerals, and after soaking for 15 minutes, you feel as if you've had a 90-minute massage. It was truly magical! We can't say enough about this property and its service. We eagerly anticipate our return!

Such a special place. My husband and stayed here for a few nights while vacationing in Japan- it was our favorite hotel of the trip. The service, the attention to detail, the architecture, the design, the food- all first class and extraordinary. Tucked away but centrally located.

At Forni, we had the most memorable pork dish ever, looked after by Chef Terajima, Ms Sayaka, Mr Yohei and Mr Yashida. Their recommendations for the food and Sake were spot on. While at the bar afterwards Mr Akira and Daiki saw to it that we were thoroughly looked after in spite of it being a busy night! Ms Meghumi at reception was just lovely and again, anticipated and looked our needs beautifully. Cannot recommend this hotel, staff, ambience and service enough. One of our best stays ever, thank you so much!

We travel extensively and have stayed at lots of 5 star hotels, but this property has exceeded all our expectations and more. Upon arrival greeted with friendliness and care, check in-process seamless. The grounds of the hotel is impeccable, staff courteous, friendly and helpful, rooms clean, lovely fresh fluffy towels and pillow menu. The highlight of this hotel was their Onsen. One of the few hotels in Kyoto to have their own Onsen and you can book a private Onsen as well. For the hotel Onsen you wear bathing costumes and book your 30 minute timeslot in advance. Complimentary water is provided as it gets warm, their Onsen is set underground the of the hotel. Breakfast - wide range of foods available, we had the Japanese Breakfast which was delicious. Lovely bar area, knowledgeable bar staff and complimentary bar snacks, olives and crisps. At turndown they leave you complimentary pj's to wear and a face mask. A premium experience, 5 stars plus.
