We have stayed at several Riu resorts and this was by far the worst. Should not be rated as 5 star. It is in desperate need of update. Upon checkin first room given had broken toilet seat, rusty patio door that would not open and stunk like fish. Second room had working facilities but mattress was so hard my arms fell asleep. Tried all the restaurants none were great. Had to send back over cooked steak and lobster which the chef came and told us none of the food is fresh all comes pre cooked. Fruit on the buffet not ripe and buffet items never new same food for 7 days. No entertainment 2 nites because they want to send you to Riu Party at another Riu. Average age of guests was 55+ well past party scene. Only redeeming was pools & beach were very well kept but no food except same taco truck with very limited selection. Had to call 3 days in a row to have mini bar restocked. Shame on you Riu.

I’m a 34 year old construction worker celebrating honeymoon with wife. The resort is very well kept, constant cleaning, and the staff is great. The views scream 5 star until you venture out and plan to sun bathe or swim. Beach and pools With the resorts position in relation to the suns rise and set, only about 50% of the chairs actually get sun light at any given point in the day. This wouldn’t be a huge issue but as always, people lay their towels down on the best spots around 6am and don’t return to the seat till late in the day. Every chair is about an elbows bump away from the chair next to it. The staff is actively delivering beverages to seats starting at 10am. Restaurants and food Speaking of getting there early, the 3 actual restaurants open at 6pm and you best be in line by 530 or you’ll end up waiting 45 minutes or an hour and a half for the steak restaurant. They list two other restaurants but they are the exact same, it’s a buffet. One name is for the indoor seating and one is for outdoor seating but the same exact buffet. The 24 hour snack area is a waste, 3 foods on heat all day long. Around noon they have a little cart which usually serves tacos. The Italian restaurant is open for lunch and dinner yet the meal options are exactly the same. Food was fine but nothing I would consider impressive. Activities The resort staff hosts volleyball daily along with other pool games. One had a dancing competition where a few women twerked for claps, it was not in good taste. Off resort activities are at least 45 minutes of a drive, we only did one which was the dolphin experience, the nearest at a 15 minute drive. Hotel room They first provided us with two twin beds pushed together and called it a king. They moved us to another room on first floor which has zero view from balcony unless you’re standing up. No smart tv so everything is in Spanish and the tv itself was just dated. Bed is truly uncomfortable, every movement by partner is felt. No heat in the room, only AC. No fan in bathroom. Shower head was a rainfall head and handheld but only the hand held worked. One sink wouldn’t drain properly. The acoustics of the hall way and the distance between neighbor doors will wake you up. You’ll hear doors slamming till late. Speaking of late, the party pool has a dj and they generally play loud music till 10 or later which is easily heard with sliding door shut. Drinks They were great with drinks, didn’t have anything I didn’t like. They are resort drinks, hard to mess that up. Summary I wouldn’t come back and I wouldn’t have come here knowing what I know now. This is the 6th all inclusive resort I’ve been to and it just has 5 star views and 3 star everything else. After the awe of the view is gone, you’re left with crowded areas and food you’ve had before. I thought I was coming to a relaxing vacation but they just try too hard to be a party scene when the average age of guests is between 30-65. If you do come here, go across the road for a massage. They charge 350$ usd on resort, 60$ across the road.

This exceed our already high expectations. We decided to stay her based on reviews that noted it was a beautiful property, very clean, service was excellent, food was great, and location was perfect. The property did not disappoint. Key points to note: this is not a cookie cutter property like many other newer ones that are literally concrete and glass. This place has character, like out of a 1960’s James Bond movie. Everything has character, from the lobby with its marble and stained glass, to the bars, and the first main pool is picture perfect. The second activity pool, which is livelier and has a swim up pool bar and a deck pool bar, is popular during the day. There are plenty of athletic and non-athletic activities to participate in. Drinks were great and if you ordered top shelf, they poured you top shelf. Beach BBQ days were great. Beach area was nice and give the property faces mostly north, the waves coming in from the Gulf are quite tame compared to places on the strip south of here. The food was fantastic for an all inclusive. Our favorite was the infusion restaurant, we ate there multiple times. The steak house was to be desired for steak (Mexicans don’t have great cuts of meat) but we also ordered Lobster which was fresh and tasty. Their buffet is something else - most food is prepared right in front of you at different stations. It is HUGE and has so much, I can’t believe they can manage knowing what is where. The quality and quantity were great. The Japanese and Mexican restaurants were also A rated. We did not try the Italian as not many people were ever there. We asked for a high room and booked a sea view - we were on the 7th floor - WOW - the fantastic views. Definitely worth the sea view. Rooms were well appointed and comfortable. We did go up to a couple other Riu properties, including the 10 minute away Riu Party at the Caribe. It was a pool party with DJ’s, laser show, and foam everywhere. It’s free to go to the Riu Party and even for middle aged people, it was fun to experience at least once. Everything about the Riu was top notch. While you pay more, you get more. It is a smaller yet upscale property that doesn’t boast a spring break knock-it-out-rock stuff, it is what we were looking for. You are not treated like cattle or a number here. We booked directly on the hotel’s site and became Class members. You do save money that way, we found, compared to package deals. The only thing we would not do is the Isla Mujeres exclusion booked through the Scuba Caribe rep on site. We’ve been to Isla many times and have enjoyed it. This particular day trip held a lot to be desired. Not Riu’s fault, just a note if you see them there.

We just returned from an 8 day trip to this hotel. Here are our good/less than good experiences. The good. The entertainment staff is so energetic and fun. A pleasure to be around. The service was amazing. Friendly and prompt, be it the pool, bartenders, or servers. The entire facility was clean and comfortable. Throughly enjoyed our pool time, met many wonderful people. The ocean is beautiful and swim able. Less than good The food was our biggest disappointment. Based on reviews, we had hopes for better food overall. Most of the dishes, be it buffet or ala cartes, lacked flavor. The choices were limited. The buffet felt very much like a cafeteria. My spouse experienced GI issues with the Japanese restaurant. Our last night was not a good experience. At about 1 in the morning we heard a loud water noise. Our toilet tank fill valve did not shut down the fresh water coming in and flooded our room. This was room 224. We shut the water down and mopped up water with every towel and robe in our room. My spouse reset the valve. We let the front desk know in the morning. The response was we just should have called the front desk. We just expected an apology and wanted the desk to know to have things checked out. Strange reaction. Upon checkout, no one offered to hold out bags. Yes, we could have searched out assistance, but by that time we were exhausted and just waited for our transfer to the airport. We had planned to go and say goodbye to our new friends, but between the lack of sleep, and not wanted to haul around our luggage, we just sat in the 24 lounge waiting for our airport transfer. Overall, a decent trip, but would most likely not return. The rating of 4 is for the wonderful staff, but not the food or the unexpected water feature.
