A historical property. Great ambiance downstairs. Tad bit expensive upstairs. Here's what faced us when we arrived in our room. Inside the door across from the bath, a large counter space maybe three or four feet long. What's its function? It supported an ice bucket, couple of water bottles, and a coffee maker. Next on, the closet, maybe two feet wide complete with shelving and a space about five to six inches wide to hang your garments. (Hint: don't bring too many items you expect to hang up.) Then there's a desk with a small chair. The only chair in the room bye-the-way. Where you might expect to have a comfortable chair like even he folks who "leave he light on for you" have in their rooms, nope not here at the Grand Galvez! Maybe a bench at the end of the bed would be satisfactory? Other features? Telephone that didn't work, no clock, odorous pillows, and a soft, lumpy bed.
And, you can experience all this for only several hundred dollars per night. Ready to sign up padner??!

The Grand Galvez is absolutely stunning and the attention to detail is stellar. The lobby of the hotel and Peacock Alley simply transport you back in time!
We had a wonderful quick getaway and could not have been happier with our choice. It was such a pleasant surprise!
If you're a fan of Chinoiserie, like I am, you'll find the rooms and fabric wall paper swoon worthy! The hotel is meticulously maintained and our room was wonderful—overlooking the ocean.
We loved relaxing by the pool and enjoying frosty beverages at the swim up bar. The pink and white chaise lounges and umbrellas are so cute! We ordered a delicious poolside lunch that was light & refreshing. Additionally, there are beautiful pink and white loungers and umbrellas across the street at their private beach area. You'll even find servers bringing food & drinks to your oceanfront loungers.
We enjoyed morning coffee made by their barista, Ethan. Ethan was so incredibly friendly, polite and professional. We enjoyed our morning chat with him and appreciated his recommendations. He is such a hardworker!
There is an adorable gift shop onsite and there I met Kelly. Kelly was very friendly and she showed me all of the adorable items for my granddaughters and fur babies! They have a great inventory of gift items, clothing and accessories. I even got the cutest dish towel with the Grand Galvez on it to commemorate our trip.
Kelly shared with me the brief history of the hotel and it prompted me to take a look at the book in our room. Such a rich history. Incredibly interesting.
The service overall was outstanding. So many staff members stopped what they were doing to open the door for me & wish me a good day. I lost count how many times that happened. It’s just so rare to find nowadays.
We’ll definitely be back! The Grand Galvez is a gem and I hope to bring back my children and grandchildren. I can’t wait to try Sunday Brunch & High Tea!

My partner and I planned a last-minute get-away from Houston for the weekend and landed at the Galvez. The recently-renovated hotel is a classic hotel from 1910 that has been impeccably restored. It feels classy, but not intimidating. We spent the afternoons in the beautiful pool and enjoyed the swim-up pool bar; and then started each evening with cocktails in their formal bar area. One of the most beautiful hotels I've stayed at....and right across the street from the beach. We walked the beach each morning at sunrise with coffee. An easy 5 minute drive from the Strand in Galveston, so easy access to restaurants in town. Can't wait to return!

Even if you aren’t staying here, it be worth it to check out their lobby and the lobby bar, it’s absolutely stunning at night. Stayed here for a week and here is the lowdown.
1) the beds - super comfortable with really soft sheets
2) decor in the room- tasteful, but wish they had a mini fridge
3) the shower was perfect for me, but if you are taller then 5”1 and heavier then 120lbs then you will need to bend over to wash your hair and shower sideways, it’s tight in there.
4) the toilet is perfect size if you’re a toddler… mind you a hundred years ago, ppl were smaller….
5) the monarch restaurant breakfast was super gross, the food was terrible, heaven help you if you have a breakfast voucher as soon as they hear that, the service stopped and they seldom returned.
6) the gym - please please please don’t expect it to be decent, it’s not. The padding on most equipment is none existent and you can’t adjust most of the equipment as the yellow pins are broken and don’t come off anymore. The TV on the treadmills need some kind of signal? Not sure about that one…. Free weights were decent and balls were good.
7) the pool area was pretty, but many occasions we saw people who clearly were not guests (one guy showed up in his blue Hanes underwear and his girlfriend left with a towel on her head). The swim up bar service was really up and down, the two blonde bartenders ( on the weekend) could care less to serve women, but the Latino girl and guy ( during the week) with the dark hair were good and so was the East Indian tall girl. They actually cared if I was thirsty…. Pool temperature was VERY hot, like warm bath water instead of a cool refreshing pool. Washrooms were clean. Towels were fluffy.
8) valet guys did a great job consistently….
9) night guy bartender, made great drinks.
10) housekeeping super inconsistent, we had our room cleaned only four out of seven nights.
11) front desk tall young guy was very nice and super helpful great smile too.
Overall, the location of this hotel can’t be beat, it’s right across from the famous Murdocks souvenir shop and right on the beach. I would stay here again for sure even with the negative points.

Beautiful New Rendition of the old Galvez

The newly-renovated & 1900 retro Galvez is stunning to see (reminded us of Mackinac's Grand), marvelous to stroll the lobby, and with a great pool area as well. Rooms are very well-appointed and clean. Access to the beach and the palisade along the Seawall. Worth the trip.

The Grand Galvez has been restored to a beautiful grand hotel inspired in the Great Gatsby period. We are a couple in our mid 40s/early 50s who travel a lot and spent 4 nights over the 4th of July 2024 weekend.
The rooms are bright, fully renovated and freshly painted, comfortable beds, and pleasantly quiet. The common areas of the lobby, bar, restaurant and pool area are top notch decor and quality. We found all the staff were friendly and accommodating, from the front desk checkin to the maid service, valet team to the maintenance guy touching up scuffed corners in the hallway. The valet service ($35/day) was fairly quick and utilized a snappy text service to request for your vehicle - 5 to 10 minutes to get your car - although there is a self park garage across a side street for about $20/day. We took full advantage of the new Beach Club: a reserved section of the beach with umbrellas, 2 chaise lounges, towels, and a small side table, staffed by room service attendants ready to bring cold drinks and food. There's no fee, but it's first come first serve. We were surprised to have no problem getting an umbrella both days we went to the beach. We did a "ghost tour" of the Grand Galvez we found through Eventbrite. Hosted by Melissa, a longtime concierge at the Galvez and avid ghost historian. It was a 90 minute walking tour of the hotel filled with interesting stories about the history of the hotel and its famous friendly ghosts. Sadly, room 501 was occupied by a guest, but she had plenty of pictures of various sightings over the years. The tour cost $30 each, plus Eventbright fees, put the total about $75.
The downside of our stay was related to rude guests all around. The pool area is rather small. A few guests brought a bluetooth speaker and played their loud hiphop, which clashed with the hotel's piped in cool beach vibe. A quick comment to the pool deck attendant resolved the issue (a placard of pool rules states no speakers allowed). There are not enough lounge chairs to accommodate the size of the hotel. There were tons of toddlers---a real irritant to couples and older families looking to enjoy the splendor of a grand hotel (the San Luis Resort and plenty of other "family friendly" hotel resorts dot Seawall Ave as a better alternative for young families). The rooms are small by today's standards. About 350 sq feet. There's a closet to hang about 8 pieces, and a small chest of drawers. The connector room doors are not soundproof-- an issue at every resort. During our stay there were no suites in service (they are on the 7th and 8th floors and have not been renovated). The restaurant served a good breakfast but they were sadly understaffed and seemed to struggle with the basics. The bussers seemed lost, and the more experienced staff had to do everything. And when the food arrives before the silverware rollups, it's an immediate turnoff. The hotel restaurant was pricey. We had two egg entrees, two coffees and one screwdriver (vodka/OJ) for $75 before gratuity.
The hotel lounge is fun and classy, but drinks are pricey there, as well.
Overall it was a terrific long weekend. We'll be back, but perhaps not on a holiday.

You will immediately be overwhelmed by the spectacular welcoming lobby that transports you back to an elegant era. And the breakfast and bar venues live up to heightened expectations. We frequently started our day with a leisurely breakfast in the Monarch Restaurant. We have never had such scrumptious Crab Benedict either in a luxurious hotel in Manhattan or on Long Island or the Maryland seashore and the omelets were made just right. But the entire experience was elevated to the next level by the wait staff with a special shout out to Christina and Estefania. And to complete your journey you must visit The Founders bar in the lobby that has an assortment of wonderfully prepared libations along with a piano bar where you relax after a busy day exploring the island. It was a particular treat that the staff were able to assist one member of our party with a gluten allergy.
