This hotel is divine. The sheets are sumptuous, the warm towels huge, the bathbub luxurious. The terrace overlooking the ocean is sublime. Wonderful service. The breakfast; in the Lord Byron restaurant is fabulous. Eggs any way you want them.

From the minute we arrived it was all we remembered from our January visit. Our room was to die for - beautifully decorated and with stunning views to the bay in Rapallo and to the sea. All the hotel staff are so lovely and accommodating. The bar is great fun with ample snacks with any drink order and we loved dining in the restaurant again. Marco and his team are first class. The location is the perfect base for Rapallo old town (best deli ever and some great cafes and restaurants) Cinque Terre with the Rapallo train station 15 mins away and local gems such as Portofino and Santa Maria Ligure in walking distance if you are up for a long walk - a short taxi otherwise. Despite average weather for October the 5 days we stayed there, we love, love, love this hotel and can’t wait to return soon. It truly is perfection.

The Excelsior is a hotel I particularly wanted to stay in. Reviews I read were pretty accurate so no surprises. Sadly whilst not uncomfortable the general ambience was not comfortable for me (reminiscent of childhood holidays in a bygone age). Reception and restaurant staff were ruthlessly efficient but not always helpful. We were charged for someone else’s bar bill which was rectified quickly. Angelo however was quite wonderful and brings character which is lacking when he isn’t there. The yacht bar staff were helpful and friendly and the housekeeping staff were delightful and do an excellent job. The views from the sun deck are stunning and afternoons spent next to the sea were the real benefit of staying here (and the Baci biscotti they leave during turn down in the evening!) Our room was a good size, well appointed with a balcony overlooking the car park with a partial sea view. Beds were comfortable and we slept well. The bathroom was in need of refurbishment but acceptable. It is an easy walk into Rapello (apart from the steep hotel drive to climb on return). There was a lot of strutting going on in the hotel by young women with high heels and little dogs and instagrammers were annoying on a couple of occasions. Breakfast however was fascinating for people watching! In summation, it’s a lovely hotel but my expectations were too high partly due to the cost (which may be down to the travel agent tbf) and I was a little disappointed but this was tempered by how good most of the staff were and the position of the hotel overlooking Portofino Bay.

Indeed the main public rooms are grand and impressive although outside space for sitting was limited. Our room was tiny and ill-furnished, facing the car park, it cost way too much. We loved everything about this hotel. My wife and I stayed there for 3 nights on a recent trip to Italy. The hotel is beautiful and in a great location. The room was gorgeous with a very comfortable king size bed ( ocean view) with a nice patio to sit in the morning and enjoy a coffee. The pool / sunning area overlooks the Mediterranean. Weather was beautiful while we were there and enjoyed the view with food and drinks. A great large gym area with modern equipment. The staff at the front desk was amazing and very helpful in directing us to restaurants and things to see in the area. Drove down to Portofino which is a short trip. We had a car, so better to drive than to taxi which would have been somewhat expensive. Be aware of the parking situation if going into Portofino, only one garage to Park in so get there early. We will definitely stay here again when in this area. Highly recommend.

What a beautiful hotel in an amazing location. From the minute we arrived the service was exceptional. The style and furnishings are grand and charming and the view is spectacular. We dined in the restaurant and had a fabulous meal with outstanding service from Marco. We also enjoyed drinks in the bar. Our room was so lovely. It has been the most wonderful visit and all the hotel staff from the concierge to the bar servers have looked after us so well. The hotel is very well located allowing you to stroll into Rapallo for a meal or a short drive to Portofino or another of the nearby villages. What started as a one night stop over on our way to Spain has ended in us planning our return for a week later in the year. We adored our visit to this stunning place.

Myself and my husband had the most wonderful 3 night stay from the second we arrived the door staff are so helpful and welcoming. Upon arrival we were greeted by very friendly and helpful staff in reception which had upgraded our room to sea veiw with a balcony with amazing views of the coast. The reception/lobby area is beautifully decorated with antique furniture and beautiful displays of art, this is also the same throughout the hotel. We were then brought to our room it was was bright and spacious large balcony lots of toiletries, complementary water still/sparkling which were topped up everyday. We received a welcome gift which was a really lovely touch also at night we received another little gift of biscuits. Dressing gowns were supplied they we soft and comfortable. Beds were large and very comfortable. Television with access to english speaking channels. We had lunch in the hotel one day It is a little pricey but you pay for food aswell as service and it was 5 star the waiting staff in the hotel can not do enough for you. Breakfast was nice there was always something to have great selection of fresh warm pastries which we really enjoyed. We had our breakfast as room service one morning it was brought in and set up on our balcony it was was good and warm when we sat to eat only thing was boiled eggs were very Watery but maybe this Is how they are done in Italy wasn't really an issue maybe just personal preference I guess. If you are going to have breakfast on your balcony be careful of the seagulls !! They are quick. We enjoyed the pool area the walk down through the bridge is nice the decor is fab. We were greeted straight away by lifeguard with our towels it has infinity pool and two hot tubs with views like a postcard. The beach club bar was nice staff were very attentive brought us our drinks and snacks cocktails were really good. Pool area is kept well. There is renovations currently in indoor pool and sea area but hopefully we will get to enjoy that area again. Staff work really hard to make your experience enjoyable. Lobby/door staff are extremely helpful right up until our departures offering umbrellas opening doors can't thank them enough. Would definitely recommend a stay here we are already planning our next visit.

I nice hotel with polite and helpful staff. This is a smart hotel that has been around for a long time. Decent t sized rooms, good location nice bar area and restaurant. My only criticism is one that’s common for this neighbourhood. Basically there is no beach just a swimming area over the rocks on the side of the road. Otherwise. We had a good time and would visit again quite happily.

TV system not very English friendly, and our went out both nights with wifi issues. When you pay all the money, you expect all the service.

When these issues, with the view that I would like to discuss them with management it never happened.

Having arrived later than expected after a much delayed flight , then a closed freeway made matters worse , it was such a delight to be welcomed so well. This was a 40th wedding anniversary treat, and it started well. The location is stunning and you feel special in every part of the property. A room overlooking the bay with a small balcony is worth the extra. If the season is right The restaurant with the outside tables overlooking the bar becomes prettier as the night draws in. Nearby Rapallo is also good for a pleasant stroll and evening drinks and alternative eating. Of course the boat trip to Portafino is a must whilst you are close by. We will return.
