Reviews of Chateau de Fonscolombe
The property and surroundings are amazing. The suite on the main building was very spacious and well equipped, perfectly maintained. Exceptional service regarding in room needs. Restaurant and breakfast service does not match to a Relais Chateau experience and needs improvements.
Terribile esperienza in questo hotel che non è assolutamente da 5 stelle anzi ben altro

Disappointing Relais and Chateauk

Despite a fantastic restoration, and grounds this is not a properly sophisticated Relais and Chateau. We had a fantastic room and stayed 3 nights. Unfortunately 2 out of 3 nights, there was no turn down service at all. In this case, it would have meant, closing shutters and drapes, checking bed and towels. Why wasn't this provided? Our guess would be either: understaffed or missing management. Same is true of the breakfast. Price- steep. Food-- below average. Service-- totally missing. For example: It took multiple people to get us an Americano coffee and an espresso, with a 20 min. wait for this. After several assurances, that my gluten free needs would be accommodated, every day (3 for 3) I waited 20-45 min. for a gluten free roll. (I was told last day, sorry they couldn't find it!) (Given rock hard overly toasted bread instead). Scrambled eggs at the buffet were horrible, and when we asked, they were replaced with a new batch, but really? Where is the supervision? And at this price? Dinners-- were better. Service was very good, and we complimented the chef and the pastry chef.........Ate there 2 nights, and the third night went to the nearby village of Lourmarin, and dined at Da Ora (Italian) and it was great! Disappointed that they don't have sufficient staff and good management.

As a frequent traveller that have experienced impeccable luxury hotel service and hospitality around the globe, we felt the one we have here is not quite there yet with flaws… Few things could have been improved: 1. We were put in a room on the 1st floor facing guest car parking and to the West which was baking hot at the time of checking in…we asked if there is another room to switch. We waited for an hour or so to be informed that the hotel is full and nothing they can do except putting a fan in our room. Not to mention we have to proactively follow up 3 times to get the response…it is okay to not have a room, but you don’t let your guest to wait that long for such result. 2. Wishing to have a dinner at their restaurant but were told that the booking of outdoor seating area is full and we have to return the table by 9pm, I told the staff we will have a think about it (there is no need to rush, as we can always sit indoor), and the staff’s response was fairly cold and unpleasant…. 3. No staff attends to the swimming pool, not enough towel to use and no one cleaning the table and sun beds at the time we went by 4.Ordered their chateaux wine at the room at $40 euros as they don’t have the wine we wanted, ending up charging us the wine we wanted upon checking out… Those flaws are small but not unimportant, the chateaux is nice, breakfast is good. But for the price we pay for a night ( $360 euros), we would not expect this kind of careless mistakes and level of hospitality, there are certainly improvements required.

Despite the beautiful setting, this property was a disappointment. There is essentially no concierge service and no one could or would even provide information about the walking trails on the property. There was no one to provide directions to Aix en Provence or provide information about nearby restaurants. After checking out, we realized the hotel added an additional $800 charge for a fully paid reservation. Our travel agent contacted the hotel and received an apologetic email acknowledging their error and promising to correct it. We disputed the charge with our credit card company and it has now been over a month and this hotel has not rectified their mistake. Our room in the Chateau was comfortable but small. Breakfast buffet was good. The pool and surrounding furniture was dirty. I do not recommend this property.

Close to a great stay but not quite

Very pretty chateau close to Aix. Lovely welcome and tour, although I'm not sure all the (very impressive) reception rooms are well used (eg no separate bar area). Room was good with view over courtyard and bed was comfy, but only one chair. The grounds are stunning. Pool is very warm, and bikes are available free of charge to tour the extensive grounds. Restaurant reviewed in different section, but issues. There were a few things that could have been better - despite ordering at check in, and chasing, we waited 40 minutes for our complimentary wine and cheese through booking with Mr&Mrs Smith. Also, we were not told in advance that we were arriving with a McLaren rally - very exciting, but no chance of a lie in the next morning with cheering and 25 engines roaring outside our bedroom at 8am. This is close to a great experience, but not quite.

Loved chateau, service needs lots of improvement August 2022 We loved it overall for its luxurious feel and high end fixtures however there are service related matters that must be improved for a full 5 star experience. We came as couple late august/ September to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The chateau is beautiful, absolutely breathtaking. The facilities are first class, fixtures and fittings the best you can get and they spare no details when it comes to making the place look and feel luxurious. The chateau is quite large and has many rooms compared to other (I believe over 50). When we were there, there were not a lot of people there, I would estimate 10 families overall. On our arrival there was no mention of our anniversary no note to wish us well nor bottle of wine or an upgrade (which could have easily been feasible seeing as the property was not at capacity and many rooms were available). This to us was the first sign that guest experience could be improved. None the less our room was very nice, smelt beautifully, spacious, had a very comfortable bed and an amazing tub. The bath products were superb and I bought some myself to take home. We spent our days enjoying the area (chateau is in an amazing location very close to aix and many other chateaus). We also spent a very large time relaxing in the chateau. Enjoying the greenery, the pool, grounds, indoor common areas. There is a sweet forest walk you can do around the chateau and you can also organise a picnic, a lovely touch. Around the chateau there are also vines. The indoor common areas are grand, plenty of space for everyone to enjoy and feel like royalty. The billiards table a favourite amongs guests. House rose is superb. We enjoyed it and it was fun to grab a bottle and sit outside to watch the sunset and converse. Improvement - The pool is amazing if you are first one there on the day. So much fun to lay around and salads provided are refreshing. If you go closer to closing time there is no one to supervise the place and there are towels and food left behind. If it’s open hours there should be someone up-keeping every little while no matter the time. There is no solid information about when meal times are leaving you playing a strange guessing game. Menus are wrong with timing (for example the room service menu said one thing but when asked we were told another). We came for breakfast and we were informed we were late (even though this was not stated and the hour was not late). Pool kiosk opened an hour after it was suppose to. On our last day we had an extremely uncomfortable experience we came down to the restaurant to have lunch. They presented us with the room service which was the straw that broke the camels back (because we have eaten only the few options on the menu for days at this point) we told them we are very disappointed as the menus and timings weren’t told to us/ aren’t listed and we wanted a regular lunch - to which we were advised this is not possible (so instead of accommodating our relatively simple request they preferred to turn us down and leave us hungry, upset and embarrassed as we just ended up sitting there - no water was even offered to us - unreal even though staff was not busy). You would expect more from a 5 star institution. Finally we had a late flight on the day of our departure and we asked to check out later then the regular hour. To note once more the chateau was quite empty and this was a weekday. The team didn’t agree initially and I had to press on with the request in order for this to be approved, though they were polite in handling the request. Overall we did have an a good time due to the beauty, luxurious feel, location and tranquility. I truly hope service staff is better trained and has a much more helpful and accommodating approach in order for it to live up to its 5 star rating.
