Five star property - beautiful facilities and grounds with large comfortable rooms. One-star for lack of hospitality, passive-agressive front desk staff that regarded us with disdain, lack of concierge service, mediocre restaurant with limited hours, exorbitantly priced 25E cocktails with no food/snack service at the bar, over-priced pre-determined taxi fare and no shuttle to/from Siena. Breakfast was the one exception - plentiful with many varieties of tasty offerings, and pleasant wait staff. Castel Monastero is better suited for a special event buyout than it is for tourists. Recommend staying in Siena as you'll have a lot more options. September 2023.

The entire setting was magical. The hotel was previously a monastery, turned into a beautiful hotel. The rooms were spacious, well appointed and comfortable. The staff was outstanding and always helpful. The food and service was outstanding. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Excellent venue. Originally a monastery built in the 11th century and converted to a luxury hotel 13 years ago. Great staff with excellent facilities and service. Not cheap, but well worth the price for a special occasion. Fairly remote location, so make sure to make transportation arrangements.

Beautifully and tastefully restored, this hotel is very beautiful and comfortable. The rooms are spacious and well equipped, 3 pools never overcrowded, a nice gym and a yoga deck and a tennis court. Luscious gardens, good food and convenient location close to many beautiful towns and Vineyards.

Sorry but this is not a 5 star hotel. But please let me explain. The hotel itself is breathtaking and our room is top notch, the place is beautifully kept on so many levels. The food is great, though not much seafood which seems odd. This place is romantic and picturesque full of history. Amazing right? What a spectacular find! And the gardens, amazing. But. There are some pretty notable misses that make this not a 5 star place, sorry. The staff Friendly, yes. But not over the top helpful. Not really proactive. The pool, spa area closes very early. 6:30PM and was the worst of the bunch. They start closing up pretty quick but the staff do not come by ever to check on you to see if you need anything, drinks refresh, new towel, even to make even the slightest conversation at all. It is like everyone there is just told, do your work, avoid the guests at all costs and do not smile. Even if you want to stay by the pool later, the lights are all off and they rope it off to discourage later visiting. (the pool spa area is a little bit of walk but a beautiful walk). Staff will not ask how you are enjoying your stay, your day, your vacation, if there is anything you need.... I asked for an iron, they said that it is not allowed and you can only send out for it to be done next day. A wasp nest around the main pool and I asked twice about someone spraying it but it was not done during our days. Pool tiles on the vanishing pool need to be fixed, they did fix the ladder though. Fine dining not available Sunday and Monday. The gym is outside, which is kind of nice but everything coated with a layer of dust and just no one bothering to attend it. Behind the bar at pool is just a junky pile of boxes, etc. and the staff are really just happy chatting amongst themselves. Key for room very difficult to use. There is a trick to opening my room with the key. And I had to learn the trick. Let me say again, I had to learn the trick to get the key to open my room! And that is on me to figure out how you need to push it in and push it extra hard to turn while holding the handle. Sounds nit picky, there is more but these are the reasons why it is NOT worth 5 Stars.

We had to find pool towels ourselves, and the pool bar was closed while we were there, so no drinks service. Chair pads were not put out on the outside seats by the bar, and no candles lit. No water in room on arrival. Finally, any hotel that charges for freshly cooked eggs has no business calling itself 5 star - staying in multiple luxury hotels in Tuscany this was a disappointing first.
